@avazula You might say that but your red nose disagrees.

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ to emphasize how important it is
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ Best thing about that is that it was a measuring error in the first place :p
spinach is rich in iron but not any more than other iron-rich vegies

@Imus It makes your forearm look inflamed
@Imus I'd rather normal-ass things. Like meat. Or eggs.
I'm actually not supposed to eat too much red meat.
One kidney can only bear so much
But since when has that stopped anyone.

bears have stopped plenty of people

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ I think you intended to ping someone else
oh nvm
it turns out I got pinged anyway
whatevah

@Rainb Oh. I just thought there's the possibility that you took my general remark the wrong way, like I was referring to you, and I needed to negate that implication
@Rainb Three letters are enough to ping people in chat

10:06 AM
ohh
@M.A test

So that means that any time anyone pings Rainb, Rainbacon also gets pinged? funny

@Imus They don't stop anything. They just make them move in the wrong direction

@Imus yeah, I guess so

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ not if the bear was fast enough :p

Wait.
Waaaaaait.

10:07 AM
yeah
now you're getting it

Oh, you're his sock. I thought he/you/it renamed

no

Pronouns are hard

I'm not a sock
I'm a completely different person

Pants?

10:08 AM
That has been a while here
People confuse me often with rainbacon

Well the plot thickens

yeah, just look at my history in this chat

I need to recheck who I was talking to for the past two weeks.

Rainbacon, I think
I never seen you before

Your loss
My humor is unmatched

10:10 AM
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ so never on fire?

M.A.R: chat user since 2014
so I guess you've been here for a while.

Also, @Mith also pings the Mith-some-numbers but they don't mind it

so the longer your name

@Rainb That's a possibility

the more likely you're gonna get pinged

10:11 AM
@Rainb no, the more common your first letters

so shorter names = better

not much to do with lenght

People that haven't been in this chat for the past week are not pingable

ahh
I didn't know this.

@Rainb Not really. Two Bobs walk into a chatroom.

10:12 AM
well, I was here before asking for advice and stuff, so maybe that's why I got pinged

@Imus It spontaneously combusts

what is the most common first letters?
in a name?

I dunno
I think you're overthinking this
Or I'm overthinking your overthinking

I don't know why it's so bad to be curious about how stuff works in a while.

As long as your name is unique-ish, you don't run into much trouble
If you don't like pings choosing a common English first name as the beginning of the username is a bad idea, for example
But this Rainb thing is such a coincidence

10:15 AM
I guess not many people think people care about how stuff works as much as I do. Because usually people don't care, I suppose. But then again.
Rainbow

@Rainb It's not. It's just there are way cooler things to be curious about.
Like what do they put in toothpastes.

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ ohh, what cool things?
ahh

@Rainb that's not it. You're fine asking how stuff works

hmm.

even better if people can answer it :)

10:17 AM
Why are toffees so sticky.

Just know that M.A.R. and Imus like to troll people (as long as it's obvious that they're joking)
I on the other hand am always serious!

Well.. do you know what do they put in toothpastes?

white sand among other things

And, does it even help to your dental health, and, why does it?

@Rainb Mint tablets
It's never obvious that I'm trolling. That goes against the definition

10:18 AM
it helps shrub off the sticky things from your teeth

But I'm curious now, the purpose of brushing your teeth is removing sediment, so that bacteria doesn't grow on it, I think.

why are you curious about stuff you already know? :)
(I know the answer already, just want to make you think too!)

@Rainb It's not just the food residue

I heard something about that sweat itself doesn't cause bad odor, but bacteria that lives in the sweat. And that's what causes bad odor according to the internet.

@Rainb confirmed

10:20 AM
Just generally making it uncomfortable for the bad microbes

So, my question is.. if you kill the bacteria, will you still smell bad?

Pretty sure there are lots of good microbes in our mouth too

@Rainb you wont, the problem is how to kill the bacteria

ahh
well, you can use antibiotics, but that will cause bacteria to grow antibiotic resistant..
However nature has evolved the most efficient bacteria killing machine in the world

@Rainb Yeah since you probably won't be able to digest things as easily

10:21 AM
that's just a temporary fix. Once removed they'll be replaced soon after anyway

The virus.

It's not just the intestines with flora

So stop showering, just put viruses on your armpits
what can go wrong

That sounds like a marvelous idea.
@Rainb Thanos snap

bacteria out produce the virus?

10:22 AM
Viruses don't reproduce @Imus
And they have specific hosts

They do reproduce. Just not on their own

You can't expect TMV to attack bacteria. Or influenza. They have a problem with us

well technically they force other cells to copy them ... does that count as reproducing?

not really

@Imus Well, there are no living cells on the skin

10:23 AM
semantics :p

@Imus If biologists knew the answer to that you wouldn't have heard so much shouting from next door
And Dawkins would have been a happier person.

I mean, viruses can reproduce but they need the body of a host.
they can't reproduce on their own
which is why we say, they're not "alive"

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ there are bacteria living on the skin. bacteria are single celled organisms. So that means there ARE cells living on the skin.

It's basically whether or not you can drive a car 'on your own' if you don't own one
@Imus Yeah I was trying to say our cells but I got to lazy to word it properly

If you're sitting in a self driving car behind the steering wheel. Are you still the driver?

10:26 AM
That's a different analogy

Sorry, my mind must've wondered off

. . . Is a man in a lonely forest still wrong

I just had the idea of using viruses after I heard in a podcast that russians used to cure bacterial infections with viruses before some penicillin was discovered.

And is downloading music immoral.

listening to music is immoral
distracts you from praying

10:27 AM
I don't pray in the first place

good, it's a waste of time.
don't pray, take some action.

You can pray on the go

sitting down and hoping to things get better is a terrible strategy, if you ask me.

You can keep shouting Amen in the middle of a surgery

you make things get better through the use of your own body, thoughts, ideas.

10:28 AM
That sounds brutal

it's called fighting for what you believe in.

@Rainb Look at it from another perspective. What good is your prayer if you do it only because you want something?

Idonno. The world would be a lot better place if certain people would pray instead of shout at people who are just doing their jobs ...
so sometimes, praying IS the answer

@Rainb still brutal

You might be right, but on an individual level, I have no faith that praying will change things.

10:30 AM
Wait.
I think we need to clear up things here. Whose side are each of you on.

Against you.
Always.

I'm on the side that maks people think

Cool. COME AT ME BRUH

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ that sounds nsfw

No it also has a meaning of "en garde"
Or did until yesterday
I do think people underestimate how much their viewpoint can affect the outcome of their effort
So yeah, praying can matter. And a lot.

well

Now THAT can be NSFW

on social aspects
if you believe it will work
it will work, most likely

I can't access it anyway

on science, it doesn't matter what you believe.

10:34 AM
@Rainb What does that constitute?
Oh, right. "constitute". I was looking for this word yesterday. Found it in my back pocket

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ It's stephen fry saying: If you are physically bullied, the best thing to say is "no,no,no, don't do that, you'll give me an erection."

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ what do you mean with "that"?

@Rainb I was looking for it when I was typing a message elsewhere, a word that starts with "c" and has connotations of "contain"

yeah

Started from here. Good discussion.

10:36 AM
I ask something like

Considering I had it in 4 a.m.

what does that entail?
What does that mean?

Oh, I meant what you really mean by "social aspects"

ah

Science, yeah. Conflating the two doesn't help

10:37 AM
If you approach someone believing they'll be really friendly, and that they're nice people.
It is likely they will.

It's like trying to make a milkshake with both raspberries and bananas.
That's hardly practical. I was thinking faith in more practical contexts.

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ never tried that, sounds awesome

if you approach someone thinking they're bad people and angry, they might also behave that after a while, it's a self-fulfilling prophecy

Ya know, like that frog story
The one who was climbing the hole

nah, I don't think faith matters that much, except having good faith in people, or in social interactions, or having faith in yourself.

10:39 AM
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ nah, this is because of alcohol

like, if you are programming something and have faith you will find the bug, that kind of faith, is irrelevant, it might give you motivation to keep trying, which will make you succeed, but that didn't depend because you had faith.
it's not a direct cause.

@Rainb Then again, I have experience shouting "work" at my program which made it work ... so faith does have a certain effect :p

I don't believing that shaking the screen will make the computer unhang, for example
Thats probably because I kinda understand how computers work, so I know why they hang...

well, you got to have faith in the right religion

@SmokeDetector 'Whate' is German

10:42 AM
Was ist das für ein Wort aber?

. . . no u

"What kind of word is that?"

Well Whate is not german

should not be answered with "no u"

German doesn't have "wh" except from words that come from english

Let's see how far we can get with that

oh are you from Iran
I used to learn some persian
but I only learned bad words...
Fortunately, I can't type farsi, so you're safe.

I'm more like a bank vault

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ empty inside until you can find a rich person to give you stuff?
didn't know you were such a materialistic person/thing

Better than a safe at least. It takes more to satisfy me
Also I got lasers. And CCTVs. So awesome.

Ooh, I'm sad that I missed the great conversation about autism and eating this morning :(

Just restart it :P
It's one of those that can safely be had more than once ;)

@Rainbacon I believe dhein still have questions about it, you could ping them and tell them how it is for you

@dhein to answer your question, I have a lot of sensory issues related to my mouth
Tastes and textures are very exaggerated for me
It's also not just food. I feel pain in my mouth greater than other parts of my body

@Rainbacon I ate TWO chocolate bars.

My guess is that that entire area is just hypertuned to sensory input

12:21 PM
@Rainbacon Is that . . . not a good thing?

My blog post goes into a lot more detail

Unless you drink really hot tea.

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ It's most definitely a bad thing

Or eat very cold ice cream. Ouch, my teeth

There is a lot of food that I can't eat because the taste or texture of it will overload my brain.

Also, it's a good thing that my commute got 20 minutes longer when I moved, y'all are talking so much that I'm having trouble keeping up with the transcript
@Magisch Ah, I was unaware. That's good to know. I guessed as much based on your disdain for autism speaks

@Rainbacon Yessir! On it sir!

12:32 PM
@Rainbacon I'm less private on here then irl. Nobody at my workplace knows

Fun fact I just learned, you can grab the link to your profile in the top bar and drag it to the chrome bookmarks bar and it creates a bookmark to your profile that has your rep number, and the numbers of your badges

And of my family, only the people close to me know

Understandable

@Rainbacon Whoa that's cool
@Magisch Eesh, trusting me with that information

I didn't tell many people at first, but eventually I posted about it on Facebook. I kept it quite for a while at work as well, but ultimately found that telling people made it easier to work with them (I have a few really great coworkers who have been super supportive of doing what they can to help me given the knowledge that I have autism)
Now I'm pretty much an open book. Plus I'm fairly certain that an enterprising person could take my IPS account and follow it back to my actual identity

12:35 PM
@Magisch I haven't disclose my autism to my new coworkers yet. I'd like to, but I don't want to be told "but you don't look autistic / you just need to open up / get stronger"

@avazula I keep meaning to write a blog post of "things not to say to an autistic person". That phrase is at the top of the list

I have it under control reasonably well, and outside the boundary ignoring front desk ladies, everyone here behaves like an adult, so I can work with that

That's an inspirational non-rhythmic Haiku.
Except the first part. And also maybe the second part.

@Rainbacon one of my aunts is in total denial and says it's just a phase because I wasn't socialized enough as a kid
apparently men can't have migraines either and I'm faking those too

Maybe just the third part. And mostly the quotation mark.

12:37 PM
@Rainbacon I wish I would have tell my coworker about it sooner. Now I feel that me, bringing it up, would be weird :/

@Rainbacon Hoping I won't scare you by saying this, but I wish I knew you "IRL", you and most people in this chat
I'm so glad I got to know @Ælis by IPS by the way :)

@Magisch Pfft, migraines are just communists making a deal with aliens who're trying to disrupt our thinking from afar.

@avazula I'm so glad too :D <3

@Magisch eeew. Another great one: "your mother didn't care enough about you when you were a kid"

I'm glad too! It's written on my forehead.
M.A.Glad

12:39 PM
@avazula Well, if you ever find yourself in New York City, let me know and we can meet up

Or Tabriz.

And maybe we can convince @ElizB and @El'endiaStarman to come down too

It's easier to wear the "private and weird" label at work then dispelling decades worth of misinformation from people who are very resistant to opinion change

JAD
@Magisch Just tell her you are in menopause

@Magisch Isn't that like a default though? Being resistant to change

JAD
12:41 PM
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ resistant to change is fine, unless the basis you are asked to change away from is outlandish and outdated

@Magisch That's fair. I don't know your coworkers, so I don't know how much misinformation they have, but I can say that my coworkers were really awesome when I told them (except for the part where they told me that I should never mention it to a client, but that's another story to unpack)

JAD
then maybe hurry up a bit

@JAD Aaaand those are subjective.

@Magisch I'm not sure I feel the same way. I despise the "weird" label. At least autism explains why I'm (and feel) different. but people sure don't try to understand.

They've all been supportive and they ask genuine questions because they want to understand

12:42 PM
@Rainbacon o_o

JAD
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ eh, quite a bit of misconceptions about autism are objectively wrong

If you meet me IRL I kinda look like agent Smith but with a youngster beard.

@avazula Basically they told me that I shouldn't tell the clients because there's no telling how the clients will react. I have a few issues with that, but I've mostly just let it rest

@JAD I was talking generally. "Outdated" is subjective.

@avazula I had severely bad experiences telling people before

12:49 PM
@Magisch me too... now I remain silent

Like some people assumed I must be one weird reaction away from going on a rampage and becoming violent

o_o

JAD
that's sad

and one particularly unsavory individual decided to prove I wasn't autistic by provoking me and using my self control as evidence that I couldn't be

what an unpleasant idea

12:50 PM
@Magisch Sounds like grounds for a harassment claim and an HR incident

BTW, I might have an answer to the newest question, coming from a culture almost fully alien to the English-speaking community, but I'm wary of posting it
@Magisch . . . Wow.

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ Yeah, I would be very careful of that.

@Rainbacon That wasnt at work. That was at a family gathering a couple of months ago

@Magisch Oh dear, even worse then

@Rainbacon I have never ever started out on a site with answering, and I properly intend to keep it that way

12:55 PM
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ I'm curious as to what your answer would be and what sort of backup you have

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ you mean the question I just posted an answer on? And which just got another answer as well :o
it's an interesting question :)

My backup won't be about this slavery anniversary thing, it'd be about telling other people about memorials no one knows about
AFAICT worrying about the "white savior" accusation is unnecessary
Nevermind anyway, I wasn't planning on posting it.

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ It's absolutely not unnecessary

that part is indeed something that could be imrpoved on their answer

If I post something on Eeps, it will definitely be a question first

JAD
12:57 PM
Probably approaching it as "hey did you know X" is better than just wishing someone a happy whateverday

I think that the racial dynamics in America play a bigger role in this situation than you might think

@Rainbacon sure, you can say things that can come off as that, but a normal person without some motivation or background wouldn't assume it most of the time

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ I don't post questions, only answers, for I already know everything, and anyone that doesn't agree with me is just wrong

@JAD Exactamundo

JAD
@Rainbacon hmm, that's a bag'o'worms I like to steer away from

Hmm, there are close votes on the HNQ?

a shrink suspected way earlier, from when I was like 8 or so, but I never went with it or pursued it

@Rainbacon You can maybe check the timeline and see if they're new interpersonal.stackexchange.com/posts/22092/timeline
I forgot how much info it reveals and I don't have 3k
. . . Wow. Just 500 rep.
Hmm, OldPadawan seems to be the review frontrunner. I wonder why they didn't run

1:07 PM
It doesn't show close votes

Maybe Yoda is too old for that running stuff. He just jumps high.

The only votes it shows are a daily rollup of up/down/favorite

JAD
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ all the flips

I was a tad surprised he didn't run, but I think he's been around a bit less lately, so maybe that's why

@Rainbacon Well, then you have 2k tools and you can check out how the review is doing if you find it here interpersonal.stackexchange.com/review/close/history
Khkhkh 2k tools

1:10 PM
I mean, it's not going anywhere anytime soon, it's on HNQ and one of the mods has an answer to it ;)
It's pretty clearly on topic (so far has 3 "leave open" votes in the queue)

@Rainbacon That concludes the review
So I doubt it'll get any more CVs if it has one.
@Rainbacon Surely a pain in the arse though. And I say this from afar

I just hope the juneteenth question doesn't get to HNQ. If it does there will probably be some horrible content that we have to clean up

@Rainbacon that I can agree with :o

@Rainbacon I hope that too. But, worse case, we can still ask the mod to remove it from HNQ

Yeah

meta link to 'respect the premise/request' perhaps? And then explain that this doesn't answer OP's question of how to communicate to people they don't want to answer? I dunno...
It's a hard one. See it as good election training XD

Yeah, I'm working on a comment. We'll see if I get it done before the post collects enough delete votes

That's assuming this will be the only elections IPS ever gets to hold :P

picturing "parrot 2024" stickers

How many R/A flags have to be on a post for it to get redacted when it is deleted by delete votes?

@Barmar I've never had trouble redirecting a conversation from something so dull as "where are you from" after answering, but that doesn't mean anything with respect to the OP's situation. But my entire point in these comments is that we shouldn't have to imagine circumstances that might explain the OP's reticence. My advice would be very different if the reason they want to avoid the question is because they think it's boring versus if people make horrifically rude assumptions based on the answer. A bit more information would make it easier to give advice that meet the OP's goals. — Upper_Case 14 secs ago
