@Barmar I've never had trouble redirecting a conversation from something so dull as "where are you from" after answering, but that doesn't mean anything with respect to the OP's situation. But my entire point in these comments is that we shouldn't have to
imagine circumstances that might explain the OP's reticence. My advice would be very different if the reason they want to avoid the question is because they think it's boring versus if people make horrifically rude assumptions based on the answer. A bit more information would make it easier to give advice that meet the OP's goals. —
