It’s finally here!
Before we get to the tour, we’ve put together a couple examples of the quality of Documentation we’re hoping we can produce. We encourage you all to take a quick read through the StackExchange.Redis and Dapper topics.
Go! We’ll wait.
The Purpose Of The Beta
During this, t...
Just want to say I'm really excited about the community being able to write documentation for xcode that's comprehensive & useful, and not having to shoehorn it into individual SO questions/answers :D
That lots of common questions keep coming up is a failure to communicate - I've tried to be less than dictatorial (there's lots of stuff I've been proven wrong on in the beta, after all), but I think I've veered too far in the "let's figure it out together"-direction. There are some strong opinions in Documentation, they need to be stated clearly. There are also lots of "hmm, this our best guess for now" - those also need to be clear.
@JonasCz It's been a weird couple weeks with people being out for various reasons for a few days here and there. I'll bring this up on our call today and see if we can get an update out soon.
@MSeifert I'm not the person who handles these bugs, but I can assure you that they're important to the team and will be addressed. Honestly the order of attack for bug reports is by on-fire-edness. Thanks for taking the time to report them.
It would be awesome if we could get to keep rep earned on the Q & A part of the site, for bug reports and feature requests and such, once docs goes out of beta. Would make it more rewarding to report bugs :-)
Just wanted to say... the way I am seeing this implemented on the beta site is really leveling up my hopes from this. It is fantastic. Huge props to you guys. The meta posts on StackOverflow and the screenshots didn't speak as much as the site itself does.
@MSeifert the current response to "will X come to Q&A?" is "we'll start thinking about it after Documentation 'works'." I don't want to rock the boat in Q&A too much while we're still figuring things out.
Someone else has probably complained about this already, but the tour doesn't really make sense, and that's the first place I visited. Maybe just redirect to the "Intro Post" for the duration of the beta?
so I've been playing around with this for awhile now and... I don't get it. What problem is this solving that isn't already solved by stackoverflow itself? Is there a mission statement somewhere?
Documented elsewhere isn't a reason not to have a topic or example for it on SO - though we should be aiming to document it better, certainly. There's a point at which we'd go "ok, XXX docs on SO aren't actually helping - throw in the towel," but applying that at a per-Topic-level from the get go basically guarantees that outcome.
@DanHulme "way overboard" is an extremely strong accusation considering the development teams responses yo my previous question and to jim garrison's question.
@user1803551 I think you've gone way overboard on the notion of "not duplicating what's available on other sites". What you're proposing would be like deleting any question where googling the question title produces a relevant page in the first page of results.
I'm starting a pretty long trip in a couple hours - so heads up, the rest of the team (which will be around while I'm gone) is @AdamLear @JarrodDixon and @KurtisBeavers.
Heads up: we're renaming "flags" to "improvement requests" since that's what they really are in Docs and we want to disambiguate from normal Q&A flags that are intended to alert mods/high rep users to exceptional situations. This is going live in a few here, so holler at me if you see anything weird with flag improvement request raising/handling.
@nicael Some request and bug reports that haven't yet been implemented in the private beta will be migrated to Meta Stack Overflow. Reputation and ownership is referring to the topics within documentation that are created during the beta phase.
What happened to docs ? The site doesn't exist (redirects to Stack Overflow, as do inbox / achievements items), there's nothing at stackoverflow.com/documentation or stackoverflow.com/documentation-beta, and there's no info on Meta Stack Overflow. What's going on @AdamLear @KevinMontrose ?
it's time for the final docs-beta announcement.
First, new features!
