Hi
00:16
@Padhraic Howdy.
00:51
Could someone have a look at this python-related "delete-edit": docs-beta.stackexchange.com/documentation/proposed/changes/… I think my example provided valuable input over the current example and highlights the inter-library part that is (almost always) missing in official documentations. I would feel bad rejecting that edit myself. :-)
01:12
Any thoughts on how something like "Parsing JSON" should be handled? This is a hot topic, and in Swift, there are several libraries that people commonly use for it. Should they all be separate examples under one topic (in which case the Parameters section doesn't really make sense)? docs-beta.stackexchange.com/documentation/proposed/changes/1567

Someone else has probably complained about this already, but the tour doesn't really make sense, and that's the first place I visited. Maybe just redirect to the "Intro Post" for the duration of the beta?

04:25
I completely agree
05:13
Hello everyone :)
Hi am trying to propose a new tag for Spark but "Propose a new tag" button doesnt add anything.
Yeah, I tried to add "guava" (I guess "Guava Library" would be better). I get a little pop-up text box to type in, but when I hit enter nothing happens. I think that's just not implemented yet.
05:58
Just wanted to say... the way I am seeing this implemented on the beta site is really leveling up my hopes from this. It is fantastic. Huge props to you guys. The meta posts on StackOverflow and the screenshots didn't speak as much as the site itself does.

Also, I probably sadly won't be able to contribute for this and the next week. (@Neal I am sure you'll be a champion in the JS area! Hope to join you soon :D)

Hi! I was wondering what could be there right place to discuss about UI bugs of the documentation ?

3 hours later…
11:04
is the "propose a new tag" dialog a placeholder or final?
12:02
@Thomas If you place it as a question in Q&A and tag it [bug], it will allow us to track it better than chat.
@JeffreyBosboom we're working on a better version of that. It's a placeholder at the moment.
@DanHulme improvements to that flow are on their way, but please feel free to make suggestions in Q&A, would love to hear any suggestions you might have.
12:40
so how does one propose a new tag?
@JeffreyBosboom you can't hit "enter" from that box. When you type, it searches through existing tags with no documentation or a proposal, and you can click one from the list. The problem is, there's no "no results" GUI, so if there are no results, you can't see why nothing is happening.
@DanHulme yeah, we're updating that soon.
@Shagun go to this page and click "Propose a New Tag".
13:05
@KurtisBeavers what's wrong here? ^
I clicked submit for review and got that
13:18
@user1803551 hmm. Looks like a text overflow bug. Digging in.
13:28
@user1803551 actually, mind posting a question and tagging it as [bug] so we can track it? Looks like something else might be going wrong there.

Q: No text in error notification when saving or submitting an edit

user1803551When editing a topic and either trying to submit for review or save the draft, I get an error notification, but without text: The topic was Java: Overriding methods which I previously flagged for improvement. This happens both when the improvement checkboxes are selected and not selected.

will you tell me what the problem is when you find it? i can't submit the edit i want meanwhile
13:55
Oy..is docs-beta.stackexchange.com/documentation/javascript/203/… docs-beta.stackexchange.com/documentation/javascript/221/… and docs-beta.stackexchange.com/documentation/javascript/208/… actually needed? @AwalGarg what do you think? Makes little sense to document stuff that is the same in most languages (and basic Math!)
do we really have to document 1 + 1?!!
@KurtisBeavers ^^
@KevinMontrose ^^
@KevinMontrose How do I response to a "request for improvement" ?
^ that person is wrong and I want to respond to him
you can't

Q: How can we discuss problems with topics?

Dan HulmeWe currently have two ways of dealing with problematic topics. First, they're reviewed, and you can reject a change with a short message, optionally suggesting a further edit to bring it in line. This works fine for the case of a simple typo, but not a large change potentially containing several ...

@user1803551 Yea... this is silly,if as soonas the edit is completed you cannot comment anymore, and you cannot respond to comments, how are we supposed to fix anything?
what are you asking me for?
im not ;-P just in general :-)
@Neal i really want to see what happens with these. i have voiced concerns for similar topics in Java and many people got aggitated
14:09
This also bugs me @user1803551

Q: Is there a need to document BASIC math?

NealIs there really a need to document basic math? For example: http://docs-beta.stackexchange.com/documentation/javascript/203/arithmetic-math/756/addition I think that addition subtraction etc has really nothing to do with a language construct as that is a standard in Math in general.

@user1803551 I don't think anyone got agitated because you raised a concern. I think people got agitated because what you wrote made it look like SE had appointed you Topic Deleter General
@DanHulme hardly
@Neal my answer would be "no", but i observed that once they are created they will get many upvotes and won't get deleted. it's similar to SO when someone asks "how to convert <primitive 1> to <primitive 2> and the answer and question gets 5 upvotes in 2 minutes :)
@user1803551 :-(
14:14
@Neal I think adding them doesn't hurt - but if folks are willing to spend time on such things, then stopping them is likely to hurt. I'd personally focus my contributions on other important things though.
@AwalGarg do you think I can dismiss the improvement request here: docs-beta.stackexchange.com/documentation/javascript/197/… ?
@Neal "dismiss" is too strong :P deferring sounds more viable. His concern is sort of valid.
@AwalGarg There is no way to defer... I added this edit docs-beta.stackexchange.com/documentation/proposed/changes/… to ease his pains.
gotta go for now, I'd keep checking in between though! <3
@user1803551 The only one I dont like is the operators topic... it is not specific to a language...
well, it depends on the language(s) :)
a language can define an operator + as subtraction and - as addition, then what?
It is usually a standard
unless you overload the operator, so that can be a topic in that language
but some languages share some standards. I don't think we can choose not to have a topic in a language just because it is shared with some other languages
either the Operators topic is viable in all languages on docs, or in none. that's how I see it
Math is math... it has not changed since the time of the Egyptians almost...
14:29
(unless special cases of course)
yeah, but how you tell the language to DO that math is language specific
I mean... kind of. most C style languages do it one way. Like, there aren't major (any?) differences between C, C++, PHP, Java, Javascript, Python, etc.
in arithmetic operators there isn't, right
but what about other languages?
@JonathanWalters Most are built off C...
it kind of depends on how basic the community wants this to be, right? Like, addition is pretty much the easiest thing in the world to look up, and is probably one of the first things you do in any language. Is it worthwhile to document it here? Ehhhh, I don't know.
@JonathanWalters I agree.
This example is also so VERY confusing... docs-beta.stackexchange.com/documentation/javascript/208/…
14:34
oooh, falsy and truthy
the thing is, people will keep creating those topics regardless
no matter how often you delete them
...
were they ever deleted? i don't think so
@user1803551 ah thanks. I actually asked a very similar question just a few minutes ago.
14:39
@DanHulme actually, how often was any topic deleted? i'm looking at the dates and i can't find anything which was deleted and recreated since i came to docs (though i didn't look now at all the topics)
@user1803551 I only know about a few examples which were deleted for being "too basic"
specific examples in a topic? (not all the examples in a topic)
so, yeah... document operators in javascript? :P
14:56
Does anyone have any ideas/links to discussions/questions for the topic of consistency? Just thinking that really good docs are internally consistent, and if we have 100s of cooks in a single tag then might get very inconsistent, very quickly.
15:55
@SZenC how do you think expected output should be formatted?
and if it's even necessary to include?
16:53
This seems like an issue:
17:43
How do I change the version of a topic from all versions to a specific version #?
17:57
@GregBray Yea I had to add them here: docs-beta.stackexchange.com/documentation/proposed/changes/… can someone review it? :-)
@GregBray ^^ can you review?
Ugh one more edit... docs-beta.stackexchange.com/documentation/proposed/changes/… I left a dot @GregBray
18:09
looks like someone already approved
This 1 vote to approve/reject edits is strange. I wanted to edit an example, Person A rejected because it changed too much, so I created a seperate example, Person A approves, then another person says it's nonsense to have a seperate example and delete-edits it, Person A approves. Another person changes the original example to roughly what I had done in the first step and Person A approves. I'm speechless ...
Agreed with @MSeifert ... it's a little too easy for a random person to approve/reject anything. Granted, this is partially because the community is so small right now and there's no way to have permissions based on reputation since no one has reputation.
18:32
Even better: if I don't like someone because he rejected/approved one of my proposals I can totally block him by rejecting anything he does.
I'm not suggesting I would do anything like that ... :)
@JonathanWalters these number of votes/amount of reputation required to approve/reject will eventually change once we're out of private beta.
@KurtisBeavers Did you consider having a "best of 3" for approve/rejection during private beta?
Early on we didn't want to do that because there were fewer people in the private beta. Now that it's growing and getting closer to public beta, it will likely be adjusted in the near future. (How soon, not exactly sure.)
19:05
Is there a way to make versions that are excluded from the per-topic version selector thingy? For example, I want to include "development began" for historical interest, but it's not worth appearing as a selectable version. docs-beta.stackexchange.com/documentation/swift/202/…
I just get a page saying that something "unexpected happened"
@MSeifert try again.
still "Oops! Something Bad Happened!"
19:16
am I missing the priviliges to view that?
@Neal done
Done
Thanks :-)
you can batch up multiple edits to multiple topics if you want. They all get saved to your drafts where you can submit multiple for review
19:34
@intboolstring ^^ :-) please?
20:09
Sure.
@Neal Please review: here here2 here3
You all know you can get notifications on a tag's proposed changes, right?
but how can we spam everyone else if they don't have these turned on?
20:50
bye everyone

@KevinMontrose About how close are we to public beta?
@JAtkin Kevin's out sick today. Last I heard, we're a few weeks out. End of April-ish?
