@ThrowingSpoon re type annotations, I've been thinking we should write the most concise/natural code possible for the examples. If the types are unclear (or if it would be illustrative to show them), they can be explained in comments
of course we're all making this up as we go, that's just my 2¢ :)

@KevinMontrose what do you think about my request to merge the syntax and parameters section of topics: docs-beta.stackexchange.com/questions/685/… ?

5 hours later…
11:16
It would be awesome if we could get to keep rep earned on the Q & A part of the site, for bug reports and feature requests and such, once docs goes out of beta. Would make it more rewarding to report bugs :-)
3
@jtbandes Yeah that makes sense, I'll have a look at what I've done so far. I don't have strong feelings either way but I do want it to be consistent.

4 hours later…
15:15
Do we have a documentation for contributing the documentation? :P
@KevinMontrose Wow. Thanks buddy...
BTW, how to become a mod? :P
@PraveenKumar there are no mods on this site because it's only temporary; normal SE sites have elections from time to time
Er... @KevinMontrose is a mod here. :)
SE devs and employees are mods in the beta
15:26
Ah... Gotcha. Just saw who you are. :)
@JonasCz Ah thanks.
There's hardly anything there though :-)
@KevinMontrose docs-beta.stackexchange.com/a/505/598 The button is gone now. i.stack.imgur.com/7uKIQ.png
hmm
will look
15:34
It looks like someone removed the versions table from the PHP tag, and as a result, the version box next to the titles of topics is empty, as is the version selector when editing. How do I add it back ? Is it intentional that versions can be removed from a tag ?
@KevinMontrose ^
versions are pulled off the hello world topic, removing them removes them elsewhere
same way adding them makes them available elsewhere
there's some code in place for making version changes require additional approvals, but it's turned down at the moment for the beta
@JAtkin looks like it's still on changes to me
Still seems a bit weired from a UI perspective that removing version info makes UI elements show up empty. I think the UI elements should also be hidden in that case:
@JonasCz hmm, now that is a bug
if they're removed they shouldn't be shown
@JAtkin ah first revision
hmmm
"versions are pulled off the hello world topic" That means to add them (back), I just add a table to the remarks section of the hello world topic, under a "Versions" heading ?
15:45
something odd is going on with that topic
13
score
1
example
16 contributors
^ compare java's version - there ought to be a header there
(when editing, that is)
16:08
@JonasCz there's a separate built-in section for versions
think I found the issue keeping it from being displayed
17:06
@JAtkin that's fixed now
still working on the missing versions section

1 hour later…
18:06
so i think I have created both
http://docs-beta.stackexchange.com/documentation/git/281/merging and
http://docs-beta.stackexchange.com/documentation/git/291/merging
(both are "merging" under Git)
wasn't intentional. not sure how to undo the damage.
18:24
I also saw that once. Two topics with the same with the same title, consecutive numerical ids. Looked unintentional, too. Can't find anymore though. (@brentonstrine )

19:59
@KevinMontrose Is this (docs-beta.stackexchange.com/questions/724/…) by design or a bug?
it was by design - now that deleted content rules are nailed down it's a little more like a bug
revisiting is on the list
20:11
Hey guys! I'm new to this beta! So Hello!
Hello Kevin, how has the beta been so far?
@KevinMontrose Quick question... when making an example is it a good idea to put comments? or no
20:57
@KevinMontrose How will search engine indexing work? For instance, will google index pages by example, or by page?
@TrevorClarke if the code isn't very clear without them, add them - it's a bit of a judgement call
they certainly aren't discouraged just because they're comments
@JAtkin both - same as Q&A does with questions vs answers
which Google serves in results is up to them
i mean like //code here
Also this is my first example:

Q: Contribute example to more than one language

Trevor ClarkeI have just added an example to the <html> >Hyperlinks section of the docs. You can see my example here. Which is calling a javascript function from an html <a> tag. The problem is this could fit under both javascript and the html > hyperlink category. Could we have a way that we could put a...

could you maybe let me know if it is okay
oops not that sorry xD
that is what I meant to link to ^
21:17
@KevinMontrose Lets say I am writing an example... In my case how to set the background colour of a div... in the example do we include things like height, and width? or do we leave those things out?
@TrevorClarke Ehh that should be in CSS topic, no?
it is
I am making one
but do we include things to actually make the div visable @neal
@TrevorClarke What do you mean?
I mean like
it is all up to reviewers I guess.
21:19
what do you think
I should do?
IMHO, yes, since making it visible will help folks understand what's going on.. Exp@aining why you added those details would be good, though @TrevorClarke
okay cool
21:43
@JonasCz for the syntax
do we put all the available properties for the command
like in my case
background-color: ....
Just want to say I'm really excited about the community being able to write documentation for that's comprehensive & useful, and not having to shoehorn it into individual SO questions/answers :D
4
background-image
etc
?
oh, I just received some badges ... new feature or bug?
perhaps both
@JarrodDixon's been working on some for documentation
@KevinMontrose is this okay? I need to know if this is the direction we are thinking!
21:52
I guess do it if you want, but I might not bother with it, it's a lot of effort... those kinds of things (lists of possible properties / parameters / etc) are usually already documented well elsewhere @TrevorClarke
But thats just my humble opinion
okay
I guess it cant hurt to be there right?
@JonasCz
yeah, I think parameters is a bit off there and syntax should probably be more like background: <color> (<box>) (whatever)
my CSS is actually pretty weak
okay
but its okay for a start
@TrevorClarke Definitely not
21:54
@KevinMontrose I meant if receiving them was a bug or planned. :-)
Ohh. theres badges :-)
Are there any gold or silver ones ?
who approves changes
@TrevorClarke the example's a good start - you can retract and make changes prior to approval
"First proposed change to be approved by others that handles others' improvement requests "
anyone (except the author) can approve
21:54
okay cool
that's the silver one ... don't know what it means. :-)
so instead of having background-color: red;
have background-color: <color>;
;
@TrevorClarke for syntax, yeah
then it should be okay?
the idea behind the syntax and parameters is to reduce duplication among examples
like, if you'd have to explain "you can put a color here" everytime
they are optional if you think it's not necessary
(part of defining that line is up to the community, I'm anticipating some fun MSO arguments there)
@MSeifert hehe, copy is crap there
21:58
On the subject of syntax and parameters, any thoughts on docs-beta.stackexchange.com/questions/685/… ? @KevinMontrose
my fault
it basically means "you handled someone else's improvement request in an approved change"
@KevinMontrose More like this?
http://docs-beta.stackexchange.com/documentation/proposed/changes/2150
there are ways to approve changes that bypass someone having to review it in theory, in practice you have to draw a paycheck for that to be true
@TrevorClarke syntax is better, parameters still feels wrong; I'd just cut it, I'd approve that change
okay
@KevinMontrose here:
http://docs-beta.stackexchange.com/documentation/proposed/changes/2151
@JonasCz tour and help pages will cover some of that, I'll slam out an answer real quick. I disagree, but I don't think you're trying to do anything we don't support.
@TrevorClarke no syntax was fine, parameters should have been cut
22:02
crap
so just put in random value?
s
basically person A requests improvement, I act on it and someone else Person C approves it?
if it's blank it should be deleted
@MSeifert yah
@KevinMontrose so just random values? or no values?
@TrevorClarke no value in parameters
@KevinMontrose okay, thank you. I'll need to find some improvement requests... :-)
22:03
@MSeifert it's working :)
@KevinMontrose there: blank (but the semicolon looks weird)
@KevinMontrose should I remove the semicolon?
@JonasCz what do you think?
oh snap, I was misreading the diff
haha
approved
^ that's what a "not approved by someone else"-change looks like
for those who are curious about the silver badge
on SO it basically means mods wouldn't be able to earn it, except in some very particular cases
lol
but when you are actually building the site
;-)
k gotta go do work
I will see you around @ke
@KevinMontrose
22:13
yah, I'm going heads down on new stuff too
are you generally around here
@TrevorClarke you can edit old messages by pressing up
@TrevorClarke often, though I have to set aside time to actually build the thing
@JarrodDixon, @AdamLear, and @KurtisBeavers are also working on it
@KevinMontrose nice! do you only do it durring work hours?
or is it a 24/7 kinda job
22:14
@TrevorClarke Upvoted :-)
@JonasCz thx
I try to stay on it only during work hours, in practice sometimes I gotta come in on the weekends
when do you leave work?
That's sort of how Q&A was waaaaay back in the day, a 24/7 job
@TrevorClarke I normally work a 10-7 or so, with about an hour for lunch
(well, nobody actually clocks lunch - but I tend to take about an hour)
@KevinMontrose okay cool well have a good day
22:16
Thanks!
probs see you around
@KevinMontrose Have you had any more thoughts on docs-beta.stackexchange.com/questions/703/…?
22:38
@JAtkin What happened to your edit about the copy of lists?
Rejected for about the same reason you commented about.
what a pity - and it cleared my flag...
Hmmm... Looks like a bug.
ok, I've written a feature request: docs-beta.stackexchange.com/questions/732
23:03
Looks like they got badges working!
