is there a post on Meta SU articulating the problem?

Q: Spurious mass-flagging events in Root Access chat room—any idea who's responsible?

bwDracoLately, we've been seeing several mass-flagging events where some unknown user decides to flag a large number of chat messages in the Root Access room as spam/offensive (not mod attention). We've been unable to determine the exact source of these flags. Does anyone have any idea who's responsibl...

Yeah I see draco is being hypocritical there now too.
Some people have been known to search back through the chat transcripts quite a long way so they can be offended. — Iain Oct 11 '14 at 11:41
^^ lol

@bwDraco this doesn't really articulate the problem

So what would like to see?

problem: someone is flagging things as offensive that actually aren't and as a result people are being suspended because of it

6:07 PM
You're saying innocent users are getting suspended because of this?

@JohnB Doesn't the suspension only happens if a mod agrees its offensive
And if that happens, doesn't that mean by definition it has at least some merit to it?

@bwDraco I don't know, I don't really know what the problem is. If it's just mass flagging and the flags are declined, then oh well whatever

@JohnB As far as I know nobody has been suspended (yet). But only because the horde of mods has chosen not too.

@DavidPostill I unsuspended Pato yesterday after I saw one wrongfully approved offensive flag

Ah. OK. I missed that.

This is a perfectly good and valid Meta question. That said, regarding the specific case: expletives are not allowed on the network even if zero users find them offensive. — Pops ♦ Sep 6 '11 at 15:46

Q: Are expletives allowed in SE chat?

Nick TAlong the lines of the discussion (poll) on expletives on SE sites, what is the policy for them in chat? In my mind, there is a very large difference between proper SE site content (posts and comments) and chat. Chat far more fluid than the "fixed content" of the site, and the occasional explet...

@Ramhound: You might want to come here and talk about it.

Well we weren't actually told yesterday I guess
yesterday, by HackToHell
Can't swear here now huh
But the fact you unbanned Pato for an expletive that was flagged suggests the flag wasn't merited

> In an informal setting like chat, I think it's acceptable to use common language, to be a bit less rigid in what you expect, and punctuating your speech with the occasional bit of blue shouldn't be looked at too harshly. That said...

@qasdfdsaq if Pato had said "FUCK YOU JOHNB", yes, that's merited. A simple expletive does not warrant a 30 minute suspension, no.

@JohnB thank you johnb

if you're sitting in chat and just saying FUCK every 2 seconds for no reason and you're just being a pest, yes that's merited

So does "does not warrant a 30 minute suspension" mean expletives are acceptable or that they are unacceptable but does not warrant a suspesion if flagged

the flag system is really bad at providing the context of the situation, this is why these flags will quite often get blindly approved
@qasdfdsaq it is not up to me to decide how you communicate. You're at the mercy of how others perceive your speech. Something I might not see as offensive could easily be the opposite for someone else. I rarely touch chat flags, and there's no required tutorial on how to handle them either
It's a stupid system. Accept that, work around it, carry yourself with that in mind

6:20 PM
Eh, just trying to figure out the "policy" if there is one. JMG said a while back it was OK in context, but one of the links above says swearing is not acceptable anywhere on SE in any context.

I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with Apple. Love because they take really good care of their customers and because their products have total vertical integration; hate because they run exceedingly closed platforms.

I'm leaving you for coffee. Back in a feewww

Speaking of vertical integration, Samsung has total vertical integration in the production of its SSDs giving it a substantial technological advantage. They were a whopping year and a half ahead of everyone else to 3D NAND.

@qasdfdsaq Currently pro-Apple. I own their hardware, am satisfied with it from a security perspective and from a functional perspective. The only thing that occasionally annoys me is the lack of customization options (in Safari, and the App Store) and the "lag" to get app updates onto iOS vs. other platforms that occasionally bites you (e.g. Teamspeak 3).
That said, I'm anti-Mac because (1) unavailability of most games, (2) overpriced hardware, (3) wonky and not especially efficient UI, (4) a hideous amount of momentum -- personally, and with other stuff I do -- behind Windows, including thousands of dollars of software licenses invested.

Feb 12 at 2:03, by bwDraco
Sadly, "vertical integration" and "open platform" are mutually exclusive in practice and so Android will never match iOS in efficiency...
Feb 12 at 2:13, by bwDraco
It's a sad fact in the world of computing that building an open platform that anyone can build on makes it infeasible to optimize for the best possible performance.

6:58 PM
In a hypothetical future where all the AAA games are shipping for Mac, and in that situation Apple has hypothetically reduced their margins over the cost of manual retail PC part assembly, and also much improved graphics drivers for the platform -- I would possibly back Mac OS X as a viable platform.

I've been tempted by their Macbooks on occasion, cause they often have combinations of hardware that has (until recently) been hard to find on other laptops, and you always have the option of running Windows anyway

I'm split across the ecosystems depending on device form factor and purpose.

Mac gaming is getting better, but it seems like it's at the same rate as Linux gaming. So not exactly a big seller for the extra cost of hardware

GNU/Linux all the way for servers. Well... SmartOS or BSD for certain use cases, but basically I think servers should run BSD, Linux or a Solaris variant (avoid Mac servers and Windows servers).

Absent a special application that requires a Mac, Windows-based gaming laptops are almost always a better value.

7:00 PM
Windows all the way for desktop and full fat laptops.
I actually like Android tablets.
And iOS for smartphone ;p

Oddly enough whenever I criticize Apple hardware for being overpriced, someone inevitably yells back at me "But they're not... really". And I've begun starting to believe them :-/

regrettably, design stuff is swinging back towards the "better on Mac" side of things. There are a few new Adobe-alternative applications that are Mac exclusive

@allquixotic Agreed. iOS may have a better app selection for tablets, but Android apps designed for phones have, in my experience, been well-behaved on tablets.
iOS apps designed for iPhone do not work very well on iPad. The system just blows up the whole app to fit the screen.

@qasdfdsaq you successfully argued a while ago to me that for what it is the Mac Pro is a pretty decent value... hard to disagree, but it's not the sort of hardware I would ever buy
Xeon and FirePro is for a different type of use case, different type of person than what I want

7:02 PM
Yeah I think it was something like that.
Basically, getting the same hardware on a PC wouldn't cost much less, but when building a PC top-end everything is mandatory choice.

if they'd sell a Performance (mainstream high-end, e.g. i7-6700K) desktop with Nvidia consumer graphics processors with similar margins to the Mac Pro, I'd be tempted.

@allquixotic I'd just build a workstation on my own to meet my requirements in that case. Ivy Bridge-EP is showing its age.

Someone pointed out to me a couple years back that, yes, £400 extra for a 512GB SSD was a lot. But it's a high-end PCIe SSD, which would cost as much if you bought it yourself. Except when buying an iMac, it's your only option.

imagine an Apple Mac Gamer product (hypothetical): with current-gen kit, it'd have a Core i7-6700K, 32 or 64 GB of DDR4, a Samsung 850 Pro 1 or 2 TB, a 4 or 6 TB HGST HDD, a GTX 970, 980 or 980 Ti
all for $2-$3k and running OS X
ship Vulkan and I'd buy it... if the games were there

On Android, there's this concept called dp (device-independent pixel) which makes it relatively easy to get apps to work well on arbitrary screen sizes and pixel densities. On iOS, apps are designed for a few specific screen sizes, and apps designed for iPhone do not exactly scale well to iPad without a redesign of the whole UI.

7:07 PM
@bwDraco Not only that, but I've used various iOS apps that were designed for the terrible old screen resolution of the original iPhone, 540x960 or something, and those apps make the entire UI (even the notification bar) blow up to gigantic proportions on my native 1080p IPS TFT LCD.

I've never owned an iOS device, but I've seen how atrocious the UI gets when an iPhone app is run on iPad.

The iPad Pro is a little tempting to me, but it's too expensive for what it is... it's a bigger iPhone

I remember iOS when it was IOS... And before Apple called it iOS

@allquixotic Might as well get a Surface Pro 4.

@bwDraco yeah
also, why is my iPhone, a fraction of the size of the iPad Pro, the same price? :P

7:13 PM
Both have sizable libraries of apps but Surface Pro 4 lets you run desktop apps.

I'm not buying anything until I can find something with a discrete Pascal GPU

Huh. So iPad Pro actually costs more for the storage.
@allquixotic What about Polaris?

I'm tired of 28nm
@bwDraco will have to see how it benchmarks, but I'm leaning toward nvidia due to their driver stability
if Polaris absolutely kills Pascal on performance per price, I may have to jump, but I doubt AMD will deliver

The move to 14nm has been very slow. Even Intel has been having a lot of trouble.
From what I can tell, it looks like they'll be very closely matched.

Pascal apparently launches in June - I guess this means I'll be saving up money

7:19 PM
However, it seems NVIDIA is coming out with a huge 17B transistor GP100, while Polaris is probably topping out at 8.6B.
NVIDIA has been getting lots of developers and publishers into its closed ecosystem, though. I hate GameWorks.
NVIDIA is doing whatever it can to prevent AMD from competing at all.

> unfortunately we are currently unable to ship items to a delivery address in United Kingdom.

guy giving presentation in a web meeting I'm watching apparently has a problem
his computer has decided that it's going to upgrade his Windows 7 to Windows 10 tonight

Internet Explorer relies on Windows crypto APIs for SSL/TLS support. As such, its ability to support newer TLS versions is limited. The most significant effect of this is with IE8: TLS 1.2 does not work on IE8 under XP, but it does work under Windows 7. — bwDraco 10 secs ago

he dismissed the prompt silently ;p

Jan 19 at 3:15, by bwDraco
Microsoft, if you really want everyone to run Windows 10, then just pull the plug on Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 support (not just on Skylake machines, but all hardware) and force the upgrade. It's that simple.

7:30 PM
That was a disaster waiting to happen

7:45 PM
I don't know whether Microsoft Edge or !E9+ rely on the Windows Crypto APIs but IE8 certainly did as evidenced in its lack of TLS 1.2 support under Windows XP but not under Windows 7.

8:21 PM
Believe it or not, SSL/TLS support is not built into Internet Explorer at least for versions 6 through 10. It uses the Windows Crypto API for SSL/TLS and associated cipher suites. This is why IE6 and IE8 have different levels of SSL/TLS support on different versions of Windows. — bwDraco 6 mins ago

@Ramhound: It's always important to assume good faith. Claiming that the user isn't forthcoming is potentially inflammatory. Focus on the content, not on the user. — bwDraco 7 secs ago
There's also that bit of advice that (hopefully) every high schooler learned in English class when critiquing their classmates' papers: when you are writing a critique, always focus your critique on the paper -- the writing itself, or what it says or implies -- and not the individual who wrote it. "You are wrong", or "You do not understand" is a much more inflammatory statement in many peoples' minds than "This statement (paraphrase it) is incorrect; here's why". It's much harder to misinterpret it as hostile when you focus on the material rather than the person. — allquixotic Nov 19 '14 at 18:11

Q: JavaScript equality transitivity is weird

HristoI've been reading Douglas Crockford's JavaScript: The Good Parts, and I came across this weird example that doesn't make sense to me: '' == '0' // false 0 == '' // true 0 == '0' // true false == undefined // false false == null // false null == undefined ...

@qasdfdsaq Command foo learned

Anonymous
I paid good money for it

Bob
!!foo

Huh. You're right

10:49 PM
Commands taught by owners seem to be protected.

Bob
Hm.

Oops.

Bob
That's a bit broken.

Didn't realise it already existed

Bob
I blame @Zirak.

10:49 PM
However, it seems we've run into a bug in the bot...

Bob
@qasdfdsaq bwDraco taught it a couple seconds before you

@Bob Ah

Bob
~/dev/SO-ChatBot$ killall phantomjs nodejs
There, we're safe for now.

10:50 PM
:-( But how will we !!chill

Chatbot is shut down.

I wonder if !!forget foo would restore your version or just forget it completely
as in if it's appending another learnt command, or replacing an existing one

Thanks for not letting this happen because I almost abused the chatbot again.

Anonymous
@bwDraco you weren't abusing anything

Bob
@qasdfdsaq I'm pretty sure it'd replace.

10:52 PM
Maybe it's a LIFO stack of foos

** CHILL **

Bob
Commands are stored as a trie.
There can only be one leaf node matching any given command.

@PatoSáinz I actually attempted to issue a command that would do something undesirable.

@qasdfdsaq edgy

Grr don't you just hate it when you run out of fuel in outer space and have to get out and push...

Alright, that's enough. I might need to be kicked from the room.
This is veering into intentional disruption.

Anonymous
@bwDraco no you are not disrupting anything

@bwDraco So stop doing it!

I'M NOT GOING TO CHILL OUT!!!!!
^ So why did I allow this kind of response in the first place?

It's okay. It's under control.
God, I hate being so temperamental.

Bob
@qasdfdsaq False alarm :P apparently it's intentional within 5 mins

Ah

10:59 PM
If only we could just git apply a patch to our brains to fix "bugs" in personality...

I have just been restarted! This happens daily automatically, or when my owner restarts me. Ready for commands.

In unrelated news, I managed to aerobrake without breaking anything. That's a first

Bob
@qasdfdsaq The real trick is lithobraking without breaking anything.

@Bob In this particular vessel that's actually quite easy.
