2:13 AM
Hey!

hey
I got illama installed ;p

googles.
What is that? O_o

oh
Nice. Might install it on my device.

@sathya recommended it ;p

2:24 AM
Thanks Sathya :P

hadn't gotten around to installing it tho

I thought you just said you got installed??
or you mean setting it up?

lol
setting it up properly ;p

aha

I want to to detect wifi networks as well, its more accurate, and both school and home have distinct sets of routers

1 hour later…
3:34 AM
ahh, this is niiiiceee

4:13 AM
@JourneymanGeek ;p @joke

No joke :P

:P

4:54 AM
@Sathya: yes, you have a purpose other than being blamed, and stopping Evan Caroll from his kafka-quixotic quest to piss off the entire world ;p
2

bwahaha

ya know... this Hyper-V is pretty slick
oh hey @Sathya do you know where the SU question regarding keyboard hotkeys for win 7 is?

7
Q: Are there Windows 7 keyboard shortcuts for Log Off and Standby?

Gabe MoothartI like the Windows-L keyboard shortcut to lock the computer. Are there similar shortcuts for "Log Off" and "Standby"? Is it possible to remap Windows-L to a different function?

@KronoS you mean this?

@Sathya no there's one with an entire list of them.
I wonder if it was closed :/

can't find them
ah yes deleted
but it's all here --> support.microsoft.com/kb/126449 @KronoS

5:07 AM
@Sathya bru ha ha! I like that
@Sathya if that's true then this shouldn't have been asked:
3
Q: What are the new shortcuts for Windows 8?

KronoSI loved the keyboard shortcuts in Windows 7 (i.e. Win + ← moves a window to the left side of the screen), but I'm not sure on what some of the new ones might be for Windows 8. What are all of the NEW keyboard shortcuts that I can use while working in Windows 8?

though they are pretty handy :)

2 hours later…
Bob
7:27 AM
Laptop disassembly...
I wanted to fix a touchpad button. Out comes the RAM, HDD, DVD drive, keyboard, top panel, USB ports..

8:18 AM
> the iPhone 4S is now $99 with a two-year contract. The iPhone 4 will be free with the same contract.
What does that mean ?
I can get a iPhone 4 for free ???

Bob
@HackToHell "free" meaning you have to stay in that contract for X years, paying Y amount per month...

That's free ?
lol

Bob
well, the phone is bundled
You don't directly pay any extra for the phone
Trying to get GeeXboX onto a multiboot usb is a freaking nightmare :\

8:46 AM
lol
thats the same reason I got my phone cheap ;p
and least here, You have to pay the 'remaining' value of your phone if you break contract
and wait, they're keeping the iphone 4 and 4s on the market?
Odd stratergy
user image
4

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Well, they are cheaper now. Still nowhere near a (newer/more powerful) cheap Android phone, though, so it's just if you like iOS.

@Bob: thing is apple so far has been very careful about keeping a fairly simple product line
we'll have what, 5 iphones on the market?

Bob
$1k for a 64GB iPhone 5. ... ... ...

lol
off contract or fleabay?

I wonder how much longer Apple can rely on "fans" as a business plan

8:54 AM
@Paul: as long as there are enough

Bob
And there's the problem with them suing/blocking other companies, copiers or not. That price is ridiculous.

HTC and Samsung is sueing them for LTE related patents ;p

Yeah, they lost a few fans because of litigation, and the perceived absurdity of the patents.
Surely Apple would just settle an LTE patent suit invoking FRAND
I enjoyed the post-Samsung trial story of the guy overhearing people saying "Apple are saying Samsung phones are just as good, and yet they are cheaper than our iphones"

woah, Jeff replied to my meta thread <3
Though, it is just a burninate a tag thread.
1
A: Please burninate the [loading] tag

Jeff AtwoodAgreed, it is now burninated.

9:17 AM
@Paul They seem to think that samsung is charging them more for it than other licencees

9:47 AM
@JourneymanGeek Hmm. That article seems to suggest that FRAND doesn't come into it
If not then Samsung can choose what it likes as a licence fee presumably
And Apple don't get to say "you are charging too much" - they can choose not to use the patented technology. Ie, no LTE :)

10:01 AM
@Paul: They would have had an easier time if they hadn't sued.. I donno, everyone?
(well, no HTC was targeted probably cause they build handsets for other companies. Samsung... well they're the biggest target right now)

10:15 AM
Samsung kinda sucks

10:51 AM
@HackToHell: they make the flagship android phone ;p
/me is currently fond of HTC

Q: Why PCs need much more RAM than video game consoles to run the same games?

Daniel ExcinskyIt seems strange to me that every 7th generation console has much less memory than contemporary PCs, but games on consoles still run pretty smooth today. For example: PS3 has 256 MB memory for system and 256 MB memory for video. Xbox 360 has 512 MB of GDDR3 RAM clocked at 700 MHz. And, this is r...

Seriously, this update just keeps on giving!
First my Exchange cert no longer verifies, than the fix for that breaks my Windows update :D
0
A: Why is Windows Update suddenly failing with error 0x80244019?

Oliver SalzburgSeems like a reboot was all that was needed after adjusting the bypass-list, which must contain <local> so the WinHTTP proxy is bypassed for your local WSUS installation: netsh winhttp set proxy proxy-server="http=www-proxy:8080" bypass-list="*.domain.example.com;<local>"

Crazy stuff...

12:16 PM
Roughly 15% of those questions are closed. Are you sure the tag doesn't have merit? — slhck yesterday
What does that mean ?
I need to meta more :P

Apple deserves that xD

@HaydnWVN It was on news a week or so ago.

12:32 PM
@HaydnWVN yay, I have more rep than you
But you have answered more questions that me
60 questions in fact
Luck sucks

I answered like 30 questions and have half the rep of both of you.

12:46 PM
Congrats @TomWijsman for blowing out my answrer
@jokerdino You edit too much

Doesn't matter.

@HackToHell I was scared at how the other answer would be.

1:06 PM
@HackToHell Nice addition to your answer...
> No deeplinking please!

1:17 PM
Anyone else not being able to access their "votes" tab in the profile?

I can in AU

Hm

I can in SU, SO, Meta.SO, ...

Even in SU, it works

:/

1:18 PM
Funny!

@slhck Moderators are no longer allowed to vote... Muhaha. :P
Might be moderator only, so I suppose you could try to get some other diamond to check it out.

@TomWijsman Already asked on TL, seems to work for others
Weird.

What browser?
It works for me in FF15 ubuntu

Chrome
But that's an application error from the SE platform
Nothing client-side

A: Why is updated Java running old version?

user1436022thanks all, all the information was helpful in finding the solution. I suspect something went wrong when i updated from a non-admin account. I uninstalled all three versions and re-installed the current 1.7 version. Its running the current version now.

Does it sound like an answer to any of you?

1:26 PM
@jokerdino yup, self-answer
seems fine

Alright.
err, btw, I changed the correct a to an. o.O @slhck edit it please.
Thanks

sure thang
alright, I'm out again! :)

2:11 PM
Can someone please review my edit to this question and either revert it if it's crap or improve it, orrrr tell me it's good?

Q: SteadyState alternatives for Vista

SajeeOn their Vista PCs, my library uses Windows SteadyState to discard changes patrons make to system. Recently, one of those machines had to be re-imaged with stock version of Vista that came with the machine. Steadystate is no longer available from Microsoft. I saw this list of alternatives, but...

@allquixotic Nicely done sir.

am I the only one who spends an inordinate amount of time re-reading my own answers and vainly admiring how good they are, almost every single time I get an upvote?

@allquixotic I have 1/6th your rep and probably spend more time doing that :P I'll take what I can...

hehe
judging from the past two months of contribution, my rep seems to come in waves. overall I'm a fairly steady contributor and I don't reach the rep cap for the day very frequently, but my contributions scale with the amount of work (or lack thereof) that I have during my day job
so as long as I'm gainfully employed in a job where I'm not nailed to the wall 40 hours a week, I'll continue to contribute
some days are hectic, some weeks are hectic and I only get in a few points
but recently at least I'm idle

lol
that does tend to happen

2:20 PM
@allquixotic why in bold ?
and yay 75 rep today

@HackToHell, I have noticed a tendency for people / editors to ask "the real question" in bold
that doesn't make it right or wrong; I was just following an observed convention

@allquixotic also might help the zomgsoftwarerec situation

I wish I could feel justified in picking on the noobishness of this guy, and the way that I have to spoon-feed him the answers, but I can't claim that I learned it in any better a way. I learned most of it in IRC and by searching mailing lists. I didn't read the docs, either :P

Q: Problems with libconfig PKG_CONFIG_PATH enviroment variable

FendrixI've coded a project with some files in C. To make it easy for the user to start the program I started to generate a cfg-file. For this reason I installed libconf. Unfortunately on compiling with a test file I get this message. $ gcc $(pkg-config --cflags libconfig) configTest.c -o configTest $...

oh, also, a lot of trial and error (mostly error)
at this point I seriously love autoconf and automake and make and pkg-config and yum (apt, not so much)... years ago I hated them... it's hard to love that which you don't understand o_O (deep thought there)

2:38 PM
@HackToHell I've had a bit of an answering drought for a while... Try and do 1 or 2 a day and usually fail miserably :/
@allquixotic Same as me really, when things are quietish and i'm doing stuff at my desk i'm usually on SU quite a bit, not just chat
when things are busier i'm generally in chat but got no time to chat more than a few lines so defo not many answers lol

aww crud, my carrier is cutting the data part of my plan to 2gb if and when I recontract
Not that I use all of it, but its kind of annoying nonetheless

@JourneymanGeek Are they letting you keep the same contract if you buy your phones retail?
Verizon lets me do that, so I can pay $550 - $650 for a flagship smartphone but I still get unlimited data which saves me thousands of dollars in overage fees per year and allows me to use it as my primary internet connection :D

@allquixotic: not sure - good incentive to keep my phone as long as possible ;p

they only "re-contract" me if I buy a subsidized phone

2:46 PM
does think the plan is grandfathered in unless I buy a subsidized phone

@HaydnWVN Sometimes I find a really interesting question that I can sink my teeth into and that sparks a long string of answers... if I read about 15 questions and find nothing I can sink my teeth into, I get discouraged and start sulking
it depends on the day really
I've had a few good answers already today (answers I feel good about) so I'm on a roll
I might also go stalking the answers posted by Root Access participants and upvote them just for the sake of nepotism ;p (we're all family here, right?)

So what with the iPhone 5 release coming up, I'm looking at a new phone... not the 5 of course, I'm too cheap. :P Right now I'm between a Galaxy S3 and the freebie with contract iPhone 4. Anybody think the S3 will come down in price after the 5 release? Or maybe Windows 8 Phone release? (Or any other phone suggestions? I'm not too up on this stuff)

@r.tanner.f Carrier?

Verizon

ooooooo
get the Razr Maxx HD. DO IT. DO IT. DO IT. DO IT. DO IT. DO IT. ... if I say "DO IT." any more, I think Clippy is going to bend the end of the paper clip and stab me in the eye with it

2:49 PM
lol

oh come on Clippy

Yeah I was kind of looking at that too. What do you like about it?

umm, where do I start
it's the Razr Maxx (my current phone) only bigger and awesomer with a faster CPU
how can you not love that?
the Razr Maxx and Maxx HD have the best battery life I've ever seen on a smartphone

I do suck down the battery like it's... like it's... I don't even know. I go through battery life probably faster than anything else in my life. O_o Maybe water? Air? Doubtful...

2:51 PM
I was out actively using social media in a near cellular dead-zone (so lots of tower hopping and searching) for about 8 hours last night and my battery only went down to 60%, and that's after listening to music on the train for an hour and using GPS in the car for an hour while navigating there

xD Okay definitely looking in to that one

I even took about a dozen photos and uploaded them to dropbox and was constantly texting
and my phone was like... ughhhhh 3G? oh wait, 4G! nope, sorry, just kidding, 3G
so it was working real hard to even get a connection
(bad signal in the middle of Orioles Park at Camden Yards)
btw, if you buy a Windows Phone phone, I will decline to speak to you again ;P

I speak (derisively) to iPhone users. I don't speak to WP users at all

:P I was considering it for a while

2:54 PM
my battery does about 2 days

until I found out Windows RTM won't join to AD
then it became worthless to me

@allquixotic: About the only person I know who has a WP is sidran32 ;p

Dont forget me!

ahh, yup, as long as I keep my plan, I can keep my 12 gigs of data a month ;p

@r.tanner.f you were considering it?!?!?! Seriously? ಠ_ಠ You do realize that Windows Phone is a failed smartphone platform with a minuscule market share, very few apps, no real user base, and inferior hardware -- right? Riiiiight?

2:55 PM
@allquixotic: honestly? Nokia does good hardware

@allquixotic Yup. But if I could have had full AD permissions at work directly from my phone I would have dealt with it.

makes own apps PROBLEM SOLVED like a boss!

I dunno, I was all starry eyed and dreaming of opening up AD Users and Groups on my phone...

... until I try to do extremely hard stuff I'm under-educated for ...

2:56 PM
...having a phone joined to an active directory domain... that sounds about as useful as having your hand sanitizer dispenser wired to an AD domain

@allquixotic: the next killer app, that is.

there's something called a VPN (or even better, Remote Desktop) for remote access.

@TomWijsman It's not.
nor will the Windows 8 tablets

Missed your sentence. :D
Although I could implement the AD protocol in ann app to proof you wrong... xD

2:58 PM
opening up Users and Computers -- as a native app on a Windows Phone would be pretty awesome. However, the likelihood that the network guys at a large enterprise would allow that is about 1 in 1000000000000, unless you happen to be one of the network guys.

my phone has SSH
what else do I need? ;p

@allquixotic In my shop they'd be all over it.

if you are one of the network guys, I have one expression for you: ಠ_ಠ

@JourneymanGeek My WP7 has SSH too! :D
(inb4 server or client)
Although I could write a pointless server... o.O

cool story bro

2:59 PM
I have Total Commander for Android which is damn nice for FTP and LAN file access.

how do i get an annoying paperclip on my screen?

@allquixotic This is what I was hoping for. If Microsoft would go whole hog and create native apps for all its server junk on a phone I'd buy the hell out of it.

@MichaelHampton, type "I would like to eat some chips and salsa"

Screen is too small to properly use remote desktop.

@allquixotic Thanks, but the annoying paperclip already helped me :)

3:00 PM
@tombull89 This is what pushes me towards the S3

@r.tanner.f except that the Razr Maxx HD has an even larger screen than the S3

@MichaelHampton You should try the Gaming.SE one.

@allquixotic Sold.

my 7" tablet is just right for remote desktop, although I have to admit that my ThinkPad Tablet (slate; not a laptop) is the best Android device I've seen for remote desktop because I bought the keyboard folio that comes with a trackpoint on the keyboard

3:01 PM
a 10.1" ThinkPad Tablet running ICS with a keyboard with a built-in mouse of my favorite variety (TrackPoint) and a stylus... what's not to like?
and if I need Windows, /me RDPs done
I always call it a TrackPoint, but that's a funny picture... starred
you forgot "eraser" though :/
between TrackPoint and nub

@JourneymanGeek Hit the red flag! Oh wait...

@allquixotic: oh, there was a question on it on SU, someone linked it, then someone else complained ;p

@JourneymanGeek Hit the red button!

Right click, delete note; hah, better... :P

i need to spam chat to get that off my screen

3:03 PM
stars invisible message

last thing i need is boss walking by and seeing that word on my screen
the one on the right

Oh, removed...

ah
sorry
THAT red button

@JourneymanGeek XKCD is oneboxed, if you want to share the URL, be sure to escape it (I guess that helps ;D)

3:05 PM
lol

funny thing was I wasn't paying attention cause I was looking for 'that' meta question

Meh, can't tell if this guy's improved patch actually deals with my comment. He added one line... >_<
+Signals.addSignalMethods(ScreenShieldFallback.prototype);

bah, @Mokubai is being a stranger... he's answering questions (caught him!) and not in here

3:07 PM
@TomWijsman That sounds lovely :D

@allquixotic You and your brother.

:( Yes
the table-throwing McNamaras

~_~
Namam has a Hindu religious meaning attached to it.

/me stalks @r.tanner.f's answers and upvotes them
against guidelines? D:

sits in the corner of the room.
@allquixotic Sorta.

3:11 PM
@allquixotic Be careful not to get any on you... lol I was just making a mad dash to 1k :P

You can't have more rep than me!

@jokerdino wow I actually do have more SU rep than you O_o

I'm just looking at your answers and being like "yeah, those are some good answers!" (I honestly think that or else I wouldn't upvote them)
@jokerdino is some kind of guru on askubuntu though isn't he?

@r.tanner.f Yes and that worries me :P
@allquixotic Is it?
I am just a wannabe Ubuntu user

12k rep dood

3:13 PM
@jokerdino: and also some slang meaning. namam poodarthu? ;p

@JourneymanGeek woah.. that gives a new dimension to these McNamaras :P
@allquixotic Don't read any of my answers please. <3

on askubuntu?

Anywhere.
I am not interested in attracting downvotes.

why can't I read them? are you embarrassed by them?

@allquixotic something like that :P

3:16 PM
I don't downvote :S unless it's VERY wrong and would cause people to be misled by reading it... although even then I often edit instead of downvoting

Ah, then I am probably good.

shewt, I probably would edit yours instead of downvoting if I felt that strongly

Edit away then. I'll sit all night and approve your edits.

for about 2 seconds I was like, "Hey...! I don't need you to approve my edits!" and then I realized I'm a noob on askubuntu

3:19 PM
Hm, do you also know about serial upvoting? :D

I forget how much of a non-noob I am on SU
what's serial upvoting?

What you are probably doing.

@allquixotic When someone upvotes several of your contributions in a short time frame

is that where you go down the aisle in the grocery store and upvote the cereals you like by drawing a ^ on the boxes you like?
corn flakes, ^... raisin bran, v ... cap'n crunch, ^...

@OliverSalzburg What are the limits on that anyway? I had somebody do like 5 of mine one night and nothin' happened.

3:22 PM
@r.tanner.f I don't know the details of how it works, but I assume time is a factor. Like when you get 6 upvotes with 5 seconds in between, then it's unlikely that the person actually read your stuff.

I imagine it would be hard to draw a line for certain "pesky" numbers

If there's 5 minutes in between, it's a different story. At least that's my understanding of it

1 is obviously fine. 2 is pretty much legit. 3 isn't all that unusual either. 4, 5, 6, pick up sticks... 7, 8, 9... well, maybe... obviously 1000 is way too many... so where's the cutoff

4 i would say

Q: What is serial voting and how does it affect me?

The EstablishmentI just noticed that I lost a bunch of points from my reputation score on Stack Overflow, and I used the "reputation" tab on my user profile page to try and track down the cause. During my investigation, I noticed there was an unusual event of type "reversal". In the normal place of a question ti...

3:23 PM
thanks Oliver!

Looks like I got 5 question upvotes in a span of 18 seconds, lol

Watch out :P

that's not possible to come from one user
maybe someone upvoted one of your answers which then got upvoted because it made its way to the front page
the most one person could do is 5 upvotes in 25 seconds, and even that would be extreme given page load times

Hmm, interesting

BBL -- fire drill

3:28 PM
lol
in the literal sense or the figurative sense?

can anyone think of a way to better explain this problem?

Q: "Switching users" in Lotus Notes

r.tanner.fI am using a computer previously used by someone else. I logged in to Lotus Notes under my .nsf file, but I'm getting many errors. It seems Notes is trying to access the previous user's data still, in many different places. The Mail button on the home page tries to go to the previous user's inbox...

yes

drill lol

Q: I am a pitiful person who has been cursed with the unfortunate burden of having to operate Lotus Notes

Tell me about it :(
on the bright side it isn't Exchange

3:29 PM
I don't have Lotus Notes on my GFE but I do have the web version
which is no better
it doesn't let you run Lotus applications either

We're thinking about outsourcing to Gmail or something, but everything moves so slowly around here who knows what will happen.

wow, I was looking for a work appropriate definition and found this... I definitely meant the third definition and not the first: en.wiktionary.org/wiki/GFE
haha they would never be open to outsourcing "our valuable data" to gmail or anything where we don't control the physical hardware

I figure if you're that paranoid you should grab a tinfoil hat and hide in a bunker...

>____>
we do that
are you logged into the same user account as the previous user of the computer?

No :(
Wait... don't think so.

3:33 PM
..... so you don't share the same user folder? as in C:\Users\blah
or C:\Documents and Settings on XP

Shouldn't be. Not sure if Notes stores anything in there anyway... I'll check.

if you share the same user folder, definitely look in C:\Users\<you>\Pictures for interesting content left by the previous owner
also videos

@r.tanner.f To my understanding, the problem is simply that you still have the other users tiles.
The tiles won't be reconnected to your account

I want to see the annoying paperclip again.

Sadly, I have no Notes at hand :(

A: What Easter Eggs do the chat sites have?

Popular DemandMeta Stack Overflow/(any room): red tags Send a message consisting solely of [status-SOME_PLAINTEXT_STRING] and it will appear in chat like a moderator tag. Doing this as a reply to another message is okay, but other text or formatting will not work. Gaming/The Bridge: minigame Send the mess...

3:37 PM
:( if you want, we can give you some, @OliverSalzburg. I'm sure that will make you happy. About as happy as strapping a time bomb to your back

@OliverSalzburg I already have that open in another tab. How do you think I got here?

@OliverSalzburg It seems a bit more deeply rooted than that. I can't even create a new home page... =\

@MichaelHampton Oh, I see :D

@MichaelHampton Psshh, so the only reason you'll come to Root Access is to check out our cool paper clip easter egg? Feelin' the love. :P

I will note that that paperclip wasn't very helpful. It just said "LMGTFY" and ran off before I could bend it out of shape.

3:39 PM
@HackToHell And that is why regular expressions are write-only.

@r.tanner.f Sorry, I can't stay in this chat room for very long. I have flashbacks to my time on the helldesk.

@r.tanner.f I just reinstalled my only computer with Notes on it :( But only a few weeks ago, we were setting up my account on someone else's laptop. That seemed rather easy :D Load mailbox file, restore tiles on a new tab and everything was fine.

I am being dumb :/

@OliverSalzburg Restore tiles?

But I hardly ever use Notes, so it could also have been magic for all I know.

3:39 PM
did you paste that regex here on accident?

@MichaelHampton Fair enough. I'm there now. xD

oh nm, that regex is from the meta question

@r.tanner.f It looked like that was a simple context menu option. But, Notes is really far outside of my knowledge :D

i thought you wrote it >_>
I just got a funny idea for an easter egg for the sci-fi SE site's chatroom (if one exists): saying arch makes the holodeck arch from TNG appear and you can interact with its LCARS panel (producing period-appropriate beeps and boops and with a few buttons acting as a Moriarty soundboard)

@OliverSalzburg I'll see if I can't find it. Thanks.

3:47 PM
@KronoS You are mentioned in HTG howtogeek.com/124218/…
