3:35 AM
well this stuff is taking way longer than I planned. I must be off. bye all.

2 hours later…
5:37 AM
Hi @#$%^&*Rob.
I'm experimenting with odd symbols thrown into pings.

Rob
@Mahnax Hi.

@Rob I wanted to ask earlier, where are you from?

Rob
@Mahnax Do you you mind if I don't answer any personal questions right now?

@Rob Oh, that's fine.

@Mahnax Yeah, I've had the same problem. Really odd.

Rob
5:39 AM
@Mahnax Thanks.

Should I not ask how you are, then?

Rob
LOL I'm fine thanks... how are you?

@#@#Gigili Horray!
@Rob I'm reading about Euler's identity.
Fascinating stuff.

Rob
Indeed.

It's so simple to understand, even for someone like me.
Why did you remove that?

Rob
5:45 AM
Oops truism...

Ah, okay.
I don't understand a lot of the more complicated mathematical concepts because I'm 15 years old.
But Euler's identity is easy and so cool.

Rob
Have you begun studying Algebra yet?

Yeah.

Rob
A lot of kids your age have difficulty with the concept of a "variable."

Oh, variables are easy.
The things I don't understand (due to not being taught yet, heh) are integrals, limits, etc.

Rob
5:51 AM
Remember Calculus is built using Algebraic methods.

Algebra is essential to so many things in higher mathematics, or so I've heard.

Rob
Indeed.

Hm, my formatting didn't work.

Rob
What were you trying to do?

" lemons "
Oh sure, now it works.

Rob
5:56 AM
Try again.

"Sir, ten people were found dead in McDonald's."
"Hmm, sounds like it was not" puts on sunglasses "a happy meal."
YEEEEAAAAAH
Working now, tout est bon.

Rob
I see you know some French.

Yes, a little Latin and Finnish as well.

Rob
Good, a lot of higher math is written in the language skills developed in Algebra, it will help you in a lot of higher math.

J'apprends le français à l'école, mais les autres à ma maison.
I intend to get a Ph.D. some day.
But I need to go to bed, 'tis midnight. Bye!

1 hour later…
7:17 AM
@JSBᾶngs Please let me apologise for the language in which I discussed this type of tester behaviour. I disagree with you completely about the reasonableness of testers doing this; but it was inexcusable for me to describe it in the way that I did. I'm very sorry.
@KitFox I'm sure I didn't mean to. The IPA symbols that he wrote did seem to have more yotting (sorry I don't know what the right word is) than the Louis Vuitton Cup. I can't imagine being Russian enough to get my mouth around it.

Jez
@DavidWallace That apology seems so over-the-top as to be sarcastic

7:40 AM
Does it? I am being sincere. I don't know why you would think otherwise.

Rob
@DavidWallace Sarcasm is a highly effective tool because of its double sidedness, don't you agree?

Jez
@Rob but luckily sarcasm is easy to detect and it's never ambiguous as to whether a sentence (especially online) is sarcastic, is it?

Yeah, right.

Look, I used the words "fucking moron". I think a reasonably substantial apology is probably called for. I am NOT being sarcastic!

Rob
@DavidWallace Quick delete!!!

Jez
7:46 AM
hmm. I didnt see that in the chat logs. I assumed you were referring to this
20 hours ago, by David Wallace
It happens all the time. A tester runs a piece of software and it does something he/she didn't expect. He/she can't be arsed finding out whether the unexpected behaviour was actually intended; so instead, he/she just assumes it WAS intended, and writes tests to ensure that it happens. Kind of dumb, but this is something software testers do.

Yeah, that was the beginning of my thread. My comments became more colourful thereafter.

Rob
@DavidWallace If the "f-word" had a colour what would it be?
I would say "clear" because it is clearly offensive,
to some.

I believe the words "purple language" are frequently used; but I can't find a good source to corroborate this.

Rob
Why purple?

I have no idea.

Rob
7:53 AM
Could it be the hidden message behind Prince's "Purple rain?"

I don't think Prince is that clever.

Rob
There is also a math site called "Purple math."
Maybe they are trying to teach math with purple language ;-)

Mar 30 at 18:42, by RegDwight Ѭſ道
All the things I've said in songs. All the purple prose you bought from me.
Commute. Laters.

8:15 AM
Yeah, "purple prose" is absolutely not the same thing as "purple language". Weird that.

Rob
@DavidWallace How's this?

Interesting that these are 3a and 3b, rather than 3 and 4. Also, they need to use a smaller font if they want people to take them seriously.

Jez
hmm
how the hell are you meant to find decent jogging routes in the UK?
there's a place near me called Overstone Park but it just looks like some bloody expensive resort and not public land

You could jog in that general direction, and if it turns out to be not public, or not desirable for some other reason, then you could just head off somewhere else.
@Rob and frankly, "a dark color that is a blend of red and blue" is an incredibly lame and not very accurate definition of purple.

Rob
@DavidWallace Indeed.
But colors are, in general, difficult to define from a dictionaries point of view.

Jez
8:29 AM
god, finding jogging routes in the countryside is difficilt
people seem to like to run around towns and cities
but running on concrete jars my legs, i don't like it

Do you live close to the countryside?

Jez
you'd think so
edge of Northampton

@Rob I think you have to use an example, like "any colour similar to that of lavender" or something, for purple. Then, of course, someone will discover an obscure species of yellow lavender, and the definition will fall over.

Jez
but it's all farmers' fields and private parks/golf courses round here :-(

@Jez Sorry, "edge of Northampton" means nothing to me. My knowledge of British geography sucks the monkey.

Jez
8:32 AM
all the running routes I can find are running on Northampton's bloody roads and pavements
@DavidWallace maps.google.co.uk

Yeah, I know.
But having never set foot in UK, I'm not in a position to suggest a Northamptonian jogging route, nor how to find one.

Rob
@Jez Are there any tracks used for track and field events around you? They would be designed to be less jarring on the knees.

Jez
i prefer the countryside. quieter, less people

Have you only recently moved to the area?

Jez
or rather, i prefer the countryside for jogging
no, i moved here a few years ago
but i dont jog often and when i have it's been in the town
im getting sick of jogging in human-created areas

8:50 AM
@Gigili I think the word you're looking for may be "subsidise".

'Ello.
Umm, the meaning doesn't fit that much.

You could say "take on".
But since you've already had excellent advice about how to say it in German, it's kind of redundant for me to help you with how to say it in English.

I already said it to the one I wanted.
But thank you.

:-)
@Gigili So he came to your country to try and win you back; then expected you to pay for the privilege of being won back? Interesting.

9:10 AM
@DavidWallace Haha, very well said. I don't know if he really think so or I'm just under the illusion.

@Gigili Very rude of me to cast aspersions on someone who obviously means a lot to you. I should know better than to attend these chats late at night.

'Ello

Buona sera.

Thanks; but really, it's morning here (morning=mattina; sera=evening).
"Buona" is perfect.
:)

Si, ma io non sono in Italia.
Ahora e la sera per me.

9:23 AM
Non capisco un'acca.

Congratulations for your Italian.

Я не говорю acca.

My Italian? Thank you.

Parlo italiano o turco ottomano?

Только вы знаете, что вы говорите.

9:26 AM
Turco ottomano, ovviamente.

بدیهی است که

Non è giusto.

I see that there is more than one people that speak Italian language

He's infected with Jasper virus, "I see you blabla".

I am pretty sure there is more than one person living in Italy.

9:28 AM

@DavidWallace I could insult you in Italian to prove the opposite, but I have more important things to do.

@RegDwightѬſ道 :-)

Hi, I'm wondering about the meaning of "You put it down like New York City" (it is from the song azlyrics.com/lyrics/chrisbrown/internationallove.html). What does "put it down like" means in this context? Thanks!

I always thinked that, apart from Italy itself, Italian speaker could be found in a few areas (particularly France and Germany)

9:33 AM
Switzerland.

I have heard Italian in Buenos Aires.

Oh yeah, there's a surprising amount of Italians in Brazil as well.

Yes. Many Italians had emigrated there

Umm, I have to go and do something else for a while. BBL.

9:35 AM
Right. I was supposed to do that thing called work...

@RegDwightѬſ道 Many Italians who emigrated in the late nineteenth century were from poor backgrounds and were illiterate. So, you cannot learn Italian language from they.
Not only were they unable to write, in many case they were unable to speak standard Italian.

Jez
10:21 AM
Just ordered some 180s ear warmer headphones :-)
hopefully i'll finally be able to start jogging without coming back feeling like needles are being stuck into my ears for the next hour

Q: Difference between dawn and realize

xralfI encountered a word dawn and I have a feeling I understood the meaning in context. e.g. in this sentence 1) It dawned on him that she had loved him. it means 2) It entered his consciousness that she had loved him. I noticed that no dictionary states realize as a synonym of dawn. ...

The OP has accepted the wrong answer, if you ask me.
A poetic synonym is still a synonym. So saying, "one of the words is poetic" doesn't explain why they are not synonyms.

Oh, no! That's twice today that somebody has had a different opinion from Reg. I have notified the appropriate authorities :-)
Seriously though, @Reg, you're absolutely right.

Xblast time! Laters.

до свидания

11:03 AM
Hi!
Would you insert your card into this?

If that's how the slot usually looked, I might.
Here in NZ, just about all ATMs have this see-through green number, which is probably harder to ape.

Same here.
But who is to say that can't be spoofed?
By the way, notice the pin hole in the lower left side of the slot.
Where do you think that's for? Uhuh.

Cool, I'll bring a pin with me next time I use an ATM, so that if there's one of these, I get to keep it.

11:24 AM

@RegDwightѬſ道 Amazing. That's never happened before on ELU, IIRC.

11:36 AM
@DavidWallace You get to keep the hole?
An amazing asset!
@MrShinyandNew: ...aaand the first vulnerabilities are popping up for which XP is immune, such as the right-left-order unicode file-extension spoof.
I tried all I could, but XP refuses to reverse character order in file names.
At least my edition.

2 days ago, by David Wallace
@Vitaly Yeah, private joke. Also prevents him from finding me backstabbing him if he ever searches for his name.
That strikes me as particularly nasty. Also cowardly. I don't go around backstabbing you, @DavidWallace. I ignore you, but I do peruse the transcript from time to time.
Hey, what happened to the Accounts tab in the profile?

11:54 AM
Oh, yes, they've removed it!

Why?

No idea. Because they're weirdos?
What does cu stand for, by the way?
Cash unit?

See you. Or copper.

No, it has to be something like an ATM.
Credit Union?

Context?

11:58 AM
Someone claiming that his credit card was skimmed on "the cu itself".
> Ken
August 27, 2010 at 3:06 pm

Hi Mr Krebs!

Recently I had 2 (different) credit union debit cards skimmed. The credit unions will not reveal the location of the skimming (do they know?). However, the time frame that I was given for each card skimming overlap, and as the card “a” is rarely used, I was able to determine that the only times it was used during this time frame, it was used with card “b” from the other cu.
There was only one day in the appropriate time frame when both cards were used (2X) on the same day. Once was at the local cu atm, and the other was at a local gc in two di
Ahh Credit Union.
How did I miss that?

Maybe all your heads were looking the other way.

Somehow I totally skipped the name of this random financial corporation on first read.
Maybe they were...
I think I've grown so immune to all kinds of advertising that sometimes uninteresting-seeming phrases end up in the junk box.

Only sometimes?

Well, I would normally remember them if pressed, within one minute of reading them for the first time.

12:05 PM
Would be nice to have an easy-access point. You know, like a button?

@Robusto it is on your profile.

Ha. That's only because they hid it in plain sight. Like, right in front of my eyes.

Wow. How did I reply to your post BEFORE you posted it?

Magic, ladies and gentlemen.

12:11 PM
Magic. Strange goings-on, people.
Magic jinx.

Also, check back in two minutes. You'll be reciting Goethe.
Meanwhile I have bowed to @David's pressure, mainly because I wanted to finally purge all those comments.

Eine wunderbare Heiterkeit hat meine ganze Seele eingenommen. ... Hey!
@RegDwightѬſ道 Which comments?

Well you're too late. Them's gone now.
I closed an SWR earlier today, suggesting a whole bunch of words in a comment so as to point out how broad it was.
Then the OP edited it to include moar contekst.
And commented back. I reopened and commented back still, yada yada.
But then David would have to tune in and point out how some of my words would work as an answer and insisted on my posting them as such.
It's really even more boring than it sounds.

Well, I must shower and commute. Off to the races. Ta.

12:16 PM
How can my sock puppet post an answer if you go and close it?

Magically.

@Robusto People always do that to me.
Bye!
@DavidWallace Naughty Edmund again?

12:40 PM
morning everyone
grrrrr. so my glagolitic username doesn't appear properly on this computer

Hmm can you show it to me?

Oh, yes, I see unicode fillers.

huh. well that's weird

People just need to install a font that includes those characters.
Any recommendations?

12:48 PM
The odd thing is, I can only see the four symbols when I look at the <title> of JSB's user page. On the page itself, they are boxes.

apropos, i just crossed 20K rep on SO!

@Mahnax That means your title uses a different font.
My titles use Times New Roman, so I can't see much.

@Cerberus Yeah, that would make sense. But that would mean that it's already installed, yes?

Firefox, however, goes through all my installed fonts to see if it can find anything.
@Mahnax Yes.

12:50 PM
Hm, I will check FF.

@Mahnax You are using Safari now?

i can't even screenshot what it's supposed to be at this point

Then FF should be able to see it too, at least on Windows.
You can't see it either?

@Cerberus Yeah.
I still use Safari for casual browsing.

nor can i change it back, since only 1 username change per 30 days

12:51 PM
There we go, thank you, FF.
So which one is correct, @JSB? Safari says the four symbols are all the same and FF disagrees.

that just shows code points
the symbols are not all the same

@Mahnax Odd. Perhaps Mac won't let FF access its fonts.

@Cerberus Who knows, eh?

so i installed Code2000, but it's glagolitic support appears to be broken

12:54 PM

Everyone is always so late to my parties.

@JSBᾶngs Yeah Code2000 doesn't have that.

It would seem that "can" is replacing "may". Why is this happening? It may claim that, nowadays, "can" is taking a more general meaning?

"may" is perceived as old-fashioned.

It is snowing hard here and the power keeps flickering between power and no power.

@JSBᾶngs Are you serious?

12:56 PM
Aha! views source

Fixed.
Just install the third font I linked to.

@Cerberus now that's what it's supposed to look like

From the source.

Good.

Oh, a refresh, and now it's appearing properly thanks to that font.

12:58 PM
@Cerberus relink? i can't load it right now

Oh, now I can use even more of my special characters!

That's the usual way to get your browser to display characters: Google "blahblah unicode font" where "blahblah" describes the kind of characters.
