12:03 AM
feels awkward

12:13 AM
Well, then.

Aww, it's okay.
And hi!

@KitFox Sure!
It was a bit of a misunderstanding, and I was very tired.

12:29 AM
@Cerberus Yeah, me too. Jerkface.
:P
And anyway, I wouldn't want to violate Reg's commandments.
@Mahnax Hi!

@KitFox How are you this fine eve?

I've been better. But I'm not bad. Yourself?

Pretty good. Tonight is a homework-free, work-free evening for me.
I plan to go for a bike ride soon.

Yay!

Yay indeed!

12:32 AM
Then some Skyrim before bed?

I don't have it anymore, I had to give it back.
I should buy it soon, though.

Bummer.
Bike ride is better for you though. Just stay away from the main roads.
And be careful of vehicles.

Yes, I know, I know.

@KitFox Poopiepants.

I do have a mother who tells me these things already, you know.
Hehe.

12:33 AM
But parents will always worry.

Are you going to to try for a longer night tonight?
Oh no, it's late already.

Me?

I know a woman whose 14-year-old son was hit by a truck while riding his bike.

Yes?

It's not late.

12:34 AM
So don't go thinking there's no reason for moms to worry!

@KitFox That's horrible.

And did he survive?

No.
And he wasn't supposed to be riding on the main road either.

Trucks shouldn't be allowed anywhere near where children might walk or cycle.
Oh.

Last year, a kid who went to my school got hit by a bus on his bike.

12:35 AM
Pretty nasty.

Jesus.

He was trying to ride on the side of a small secondary highway.
He survived, though.

Phew.

So don't do that stuff, OK?
Be extra careful.

Broken pelvis and some bad scrapes.

12:36 AM
Yeah don't!

I know, I stick to the sidewalks.

Are you allowed to cycle on sidewalks?

Yeah.

Did you see that story a couple of years ago, with video even, of the guy in Central Park who got run over by a truck?

OK.
Ew.

12:37 AM
@KitFox No.

Or maybe just a car.
Fell off his bike, and the car drove right over his head.

winces

He was fine though. He was wearing a helmet.

Oh!

What?

12:37 AM
He said he would definitely always wear a helmet after that.

I didn't know helmets were so strong.

That seems a little ridiculous to me.

There was a video.

Good on him for surviving, though.
And wearing the helmet.

Nobody ever wears a helmet here, except very young children.

12:38 AM
You'd think "No f-cking way did that guy survive."
And then, there he is, giving an interview.

Well, now we must see the video, I suppose.

I suppose a skull is a tough nut to crack.

@Cerberus I do.

If I knew where it was.

But I'm not in the Netherlands.

12:38 AM
Yeah I heard it was more common abroad.

I wear a helmet.
It's made of copper foil.

I think bikers are safer here, but still, it might save some lives if everybody wore helmets...

It keeps out the cosmic rays and the government.

Heh.

But seriously, I wear a helmet when I ride my bike.

12:39 AM
Copper foil was proven to be unsafe.

Or a horse.

You need tinfoil.

Everyone should.

Nonsense.
Copper foil is superior to tinfoil.

Heresy!

12:40 AM
@Mahnax Agreed.

When I was younger, one of my brothers died.

Oh no! How young?

Well, he was an hour old, and I would have been about seven.

Jun 27 '11 at 19:09, by JSBangs
Is copper really better than aluminum better for protecting my brain from harmful mind-control rays?

Ah OK, so I suppose you didn't know him well yet.

12:41 AM
@Mahnax I'm sorry. That must have been very confusing for you.

@Cerberus Never even got to see him, actually.

Ah OK.

@KitFox It was, but I've figured it out.

Did it make a big impression on you?

I understand why my parents didn't want us at the hospital for that birth.
@Cerberus It did, once I was a bit older.

12:42 AM
Did they have some warning?

He was born way too early.
My mom went to the hospital, and my dad followed, but without us.

I can't imagine how difficult that would be.

Hmm.

Did you go for other births?

Yeah, I would go visit. One time I was there for the birth, but waiting in a lobby.

12:44 AM
So you have some good memories to fit around the sad ones.

Yeah, I do.
It doesn't really bother me anymore, like Cerb said, I never knew him.
But it's still a bit sad.

What effect do you think it had on you?

How was it as compared to losing a pet?

I think that the losses in my life have made me a bit more serious.
@Cerberus Harder. Much harder.

Oh!
Hmm.
Did you see your parents cry?

12:46 AM
I'm not sure, I can't really remember.

I know I cried more for my cat than for any of my grandparents. That might seem strange, but I grew up with that cat, saw him every day for 15 years.
In fact I'm feeling very sad now thinking of him.

It's not like there was just that time his mom and dad went to the hospital. I'm sure there was build up with mom being pregnant and getting ready, and other times that other siblings joined the family.

Yeah, of course.

Yeah.

So there would be more feeling of loss than for a pet, I think.

12:47 AM
I feel bad for it, but when my grandfather died, I didn't really cry much at all.

Hmm.

I barely knew him, but it was hard for my dad.

Well, you shouldn't feel bad for that.

Yeah it's pretty normal.

I suppose.

12:48 AM
When someone dies, we don't cry because they are dead. We cry because of the loss of that relationship.
If you didn't have a relationship, there's not much to cry about.

I also cry for the people who have lost their loves ones.

Or in my case with Jeremy (would-have-been brother), I cried because of the relationship that could have been.

I can't stand seeing my friend cry over her mother, for example.

And I think it is good that you recognize that it was hard for your dad, but that doesn't mean it should be hard for you.

@Mahnax Understandable.

12:49 AM
@Mahnax Yes, naturally. You had a whole idea of what should have been, and you lost that. It's sad.

@KitFox Yep. I do have two more brothers since then!

And a baby feels more like an innocent, helpless creature.

Wait, no.
does calculations
I would have been six, not seven.

I wish I had kittens.

I grew up with a woman whose first child died in utero. She still went through labor, but she refused to name the baby. I thought that was very sad.

12:51 AM
@Cerberus His entire hand fit on my mom's fingernail.
He was very early.

Ah OK.
That is small.

@Mahnax Oh, so young! That's a hard age for separation. Was it your first experience with death?

@KitFox Uh, no.

@KitFox I don't know, would you still name the baby?

@Cerberus I would. She was nearly to term.

12:52 AM
Hmm.
I don't know what I would do.

My parents have picked out names well in advance.

But now I'm going to bed.
Good night!

Good night! Dream of rainbows and lovely things!

They chose a female set (first and middle) and a male set.
Night, Cerb!

Goodness. Are they still going?

12:53 AM
I will, bye!

Nope.
You see, daddy had an operation…

Haha.

Not kidding, either.

My husband is having that operation in a few months.

My mom makes jokes about him being "snipped".

12:54 AM
Yeah. That'll happen.
He's a gelding now.

Heh.

Although he'd probably be less than pleased if you called him that.

Haha, no doubt!

What is not hard, crunchy, or sticky that I can have for a snack?
Cheese maybe?
Pepperoni?

Cheese and wine.

12:56 AM
Not hard or crunchy. Do you think they are sticky?

Cheese?
I don't think cheese is sticky. Wine might be if you spill it.

So cheese is probably OK. Wine, not so much.

Why, is it for the kids?

No, me.

Ah, okay.

12:58 AM
I had dental work done today, and I am not allowed to eat anything hard, crunchy, or sticky.

Ah, that's too bad.

Especially since I usually snack on crackers at night.

Hm, cookies aren't hard if they're done right, or the not-hard type.
Some cookies are supposed to be hard, of course.

I think they might be sticky though.

I don't think so, but maybe some.

1:00 AM
Soda is probably sticky too.

Well, chocolate chips can get sticky.

Oatmeal cookies might be OK.

Ooh, yum.

If they aren't crunchy...

I love oatmeal cookies.
Soft, chewy delight.

1:00 AM
They are my favorite too!

I haven't made them in a while.

Hmm.

I shall bake tomorrow night, I think!

thinks about ingredients
looks at clock
@Mahnax That is a great idea!

Might be too late.

1:02 AM
It's too late tonight.
Hey, weren't you going cycling?
Sorry I told such a wicked bummer of a story.

Yes, I'm just awaiting a text back from a possible co-cyclist.

A love interest?

It may not come, so I'll leave in a few minutes.
Nah, just a friend.

Lab buddy?
Did you hand in your report?

Yes, both reports are in.

1:03 AM
Nice.

It feels as though a great weight has been lifted.
That, and I finished Jane Eyre.
I am not into romance novels.

You poor thing.

Ha, why?

Pride and Prejudice is so much better.
Both of those are miles better than any awful Harlequin romance novel though.
Do you know about the Bronte sisters?

Yes.

1:06 AM
Well, they had a little brother too.

Brontë, I believe.
@KitFox Oh?

Yep.
Patrick. He was also a writer, although not as famous.

Apparently the sisters weren't really that famous until most of them died.

Duh, not Patrick. That was the father. Branwell was the son.

Bran + well = lie.
Je ne l'aime pas.

1:08 AM
I don't get it.

Ah, never mind.

The four siblings used to make up stories together.

It's a bad way to convey ideas anyways.
@KitFox I see.
Oh my, it's past seven.

Bye!

Yes, bye!

1:29 AM
good evening

Holla.
I am trying to figure out if i should continue watching this movie.
it doesn't seem very good.
Can drinking silver nitrate really turn you blue?

1:48 AM
> Mr. Karason may be entitled to his "beliefs," but he is not entitled to his own facts. He may "believe" that the colloidal silver didn't turn his skin that shade of grayish-blue, but it's quite clear that it did and that his skin will continue to get bluer and bluer as long as he keeps using his favored remedy. Denying it won't change it, nor will undergoing chelation therapy, as one of the more breathtakingly idiotic commenters after the story suggested.

is back
Whew, that was nice.
A bit too windy, though.

@KitFox According to Wikipedia, yes.

Q: Why aren't friends in Timeline alphabetized?

LeslieWhy doesn't the Facebook Timeline use a basic code of communication and organization by alphabetizing the Friends List? This is irresponsible and unprofessional. How does one return the list of alphabetized friends before the below par Timeline? Why don't Facebook users get a choice for basic orga...

user19161
Amazing question.

Certe.

2:04 AM
> NOT nanoparticles, NOT Chemical Colloids, ONLY Pure Silver Atoms in Distilled Water.
Why does this person think silver atoms in water makes?
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Well, this looks legit, so I figure Wikipedia must be in bed with Big Pharma too.

@KitFox everyone is in bed with big pharma

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Speak for yourself, eh?

user19161
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Wrong, they are in bed with big pyjama

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Really? I'm in the upper left corner near the headboard. Where are you?

user19161
@KitFox I like to be in the centre.

user19161
2:10 AM
That way I will not roll off accidentally.

user19161
One must make sure there is enough room to roll left once and also roll right once.

user19161
Rolling twice to either side is dangerous, don't try it!

That's why I prefer sleeping on the floor.

I can sleep anywhere but my eyes need to be in the middle because they roll a LOT

user19161
@MrShinyandNew安宇 They only roll in this room so they are safe.

2:24 AM
i just noticed that skeptics.se is out of beta
and i actually visited
and i didn't burst into flames!

user19161
@JSBᾶngs I thought it would die out.

I was just thinking of you and Skeptics.

user19161
Also for some reason my browser cannot display jsbangs properly now on the main site.

@WillHunting i changed my name

2 hours ago, by KitFox
Jun 27 '11 at 19:09, by JSBangs
Is copper really better than aluminum better for protecting my brain from harmful mind-control rays?

2:25 AM
now it has glagolitic. your font may not be l33t enough to display it

user19161
@JSBᾶngs Now it displays as JSBⰀⰐⰃⰔ.

But don't read the rest of the recent conversation. It's a real downer.

@WillHunting what you just typed displays correctly on my screen

user19161
@JSBᾶngs It does not here, I just copied and pasted.

Rats. I must be missing a font set.
How do I fix that?

2:26 AM
Cerb always recommends installing Code2000

user19161
@KitFox I thought people on Windows I assume would have no problem.

btw, did you listen to the video i posted earlier?

@JSBᾶngs Is that what you would recommend?
@JSBᾶngs Oh, I forgot. Let me do so now.

@KitFox i dunno. i never used it myself
@KitFox i don't know if it's really your kind of thing but, man, arvo part can reduce me to rubble in seconds

Is he singing a liturgy or something?

2:29 AM
he's the composer, not the singer

user19161
I am listening to it now. The bass is very low.

Does that make sense? Sing a liturgy? A liturgy is a whole service, isn't it?

he mostly writes adaptations of sacred music

That's was I was getting at.

@KitFox then yes

2:30 AM
Or whether he was just writing in Latin.

user19161
@JSBᾶngs Do you have any idea what I should install on Debian? I know you use Debian too.

sometimes i just assume everyone can read latin
@WillHunting isn't there a code2000 package on debian?

I can read a little.

yeah, i can't read a lot either, but it's enough to recognize the psalm they're singing

I figured there was some "Deus" and "dominems" so I figured. You know.
Also Latin.
Wow. I am expressing myself exceptionally well right now.
I do like it and I shall listen more on Friday. I suppose that would be an appropriate day for it anyway.
Do you have Seder?
Hold a seder?

2:34 AM
do you mean Maundy Thursday?
seder is jewish

Whatever it is appropriate to do for (a) Seder.
@JSBᾶngs Ah, I see.
I don't know what Maundy Thursday is.

user19161
Soon one would need to install every font in the world just to come to ELU.

I thought the Last Supper was a seder.

Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, Easter Sunday
Maundy Thursday is the celebration of the last supper, so yes

user19161
So it is Maundy Thu here now!

2:35 AM
No, no, it's Maundy, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday...

user19161
Oh Mandy...

No!
Too late.

user19161
That song is always sung on Idol.

So what does "Maundy" mean?

comes from latin mandatus
meaning commandment, as in "do this in remembrance of me"

user19161
2:37 AM
Like mandatory.

oh, this is a good one. nice video, too.

Oh. Better than "maudlin," which stuck in my head and wouldn't dislodge.
So if your seder-type celebration is on Thursday, what do you do on Friday?

user19161
@KitFox You do Good.

user19161
MrS is rolling eyes now.

so, actually i don't get to go to a maundy thursday service this year, mostly b/c the parish i'm at is too small. but i'll be at the good friday service, for something called vespers of the unnailing
maundy thursday is focused on communion, good friday on crucifixion

2:40 AM
Oh, I see. That makes sense.
And on the third day, he is risen.

user19161
Sun must be focused on the resurrection then.

user19161
What about Sat?

correct. though actually the easter service starts late saturday night, and ends after midnight, very early on sunday morning
in the orthodox church, at least. your average lutheran/catholic/anglican does it differently
and the protestants do pretty much whatever the hell they want

user19161
Yeah, like partying.

wooo

2:42 AM
I thought my Christian friends did their seder-like celebration on Good Friday. I found that a bit confusing, inasmuch as I can do math.

user19161
I am going to my friend's church for a play tonight.

@KitFox what denom?

Actually, I find the timeline all a bit confusing.

actually i'm reading HP:MoR now

@JSBᾶngs Let's see. One set would have been Methodists, the other Southern Baptists.
@MrShinyandNew安宇 And the third. I don't have any idea what she was.

2:44 AM
@KitFox hint: the resurrection is on the third day, not after three days. friday is day 1, saturday day 2, and sunday day 3. (this confused me for a long time, too, since people often say the formula wrong.)

She told me one time, but I don't remember, except that she was Christian but also observed Jewish traditions.
@JSBᾶngs Right, but wasn't there a whole long time of suffering?

@KitFox she could be a messianic jew (an observant jew who converted to christianity but still observes jewish customs), or just a semitophilic christian. i've mingled with quite a few of the latter
@KitFox the whole ordeal began thursday night, technically.

user19161
@KitFox Maybe that was all on Fri. A day is long enough when you are nailed.

So he was caught Thursday night, nailed up on Friday, died on Saturday, and rose on Sunday?

thurs evening: last supper. thurs night: prayer in garden, arrest. trial held overnight. condemned to death on Fri morning, crucified around noon. dead in the afternoon, and buried before sundown.

2:47 AM
@JSBᾶngs Probably the latter, but she was a bit of a fruit bat unfortunately.

dead all day saturday. alive again sometime sunday morning before sunup.
@KitFox they usually are.

But didn't he have some long conversations while nailed up?

user19161
He said Eli Eli lamach sabachtani or something like that.

@KitFox how long does a conversation last? the ones that are recorded are like 3 lines

All this chit-chat is making me want to put on Jesus Christ Superstar

2:48 AM
I guess it always seemed like it should have taken a lot longer when I was a kid.
Maybe because the sermons took an eternity.

yeah, if you add up all of the lines from all 4 gospels you have 5 minutes of dialog, tops

user19161
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Never watched it.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 can we do life of brian instead?

user19161
He also said It is finished, something like QED.

So a couple of hours, a few quick revelations to the sinners, then "peace I'm out."

2:49 AM
@JSBᾶngs I don't know it as well. I didn't really enjoy that movie much. Guess I wasn't in the mood.

Have you seen Jeepers Creepers, Semi-star?

@WillHunting It would've been 10x more awesome if he'd said "QED, bitches"

@MrShinyandNew安宇 fwiw i've never seen jesus christ superstar, either

user19161
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Maybe that is the sanv (shiny and new version).

2:50 AM
@JSBᾶngs I've only seen a high-school version of it but my mom used to play the music often (it was on 4 LPs... my family's only LP 'box set')

@KitFox he didn't really give a lot of revelations to the sinners while he was dying. you remember this oddly.

It was a long time ago.

np

user19161
He also said They know not what they are doing.

@JSBᾶngs And that's why I have you to clear it up for me.

user19161
2:52 AM
Next time someone posts a wrong answer we should say You know not what you are posting.

OK, I have to go to bed.
Good night!

user19161
Night!

@KitFox it would probably be quicker to just reread the whole thing. it's only a few paragraphs
good night!
