12:54 AM
I jousted with my cherry tomatoes at lunch time today. They failed! I won!

1 hour later…
user19161
3:09 AM
@Vitaly Nice, but it takes very long to load.

user19161
@Carlo_R You need to put :XXXX followed by a space at the start if you want to use this method to ping the user in reply to a very old message.

5:18 AM
@Cerberus sleepyti.me
My 12:30-6:30 is recommended.

user19161
@Mahnax Boo!

@WillHunting Hi!

user19161
@Mahnax What stupid site is that?

@WillHunting It calculates when you should sleep based on average sleep cycle length.
It's not stupid.

user19161
@Mahnax You sleep only six hours every day?

5:26 AM
@WillHunting Yep.

5:55 AM
@Mahnax Ah, right. Yeah, that is the simple calculation I made too. And they use three cycles as minimum. But...I really think an extra sleep cycle (well, I wouldn't consider it "extra") would be better.
I just woke up.
After 6 hours of sleep.
Apparently my sleep cycle ended and my body refused to start another one.
I don't feel rested.
If you don't feel well after 8 hours, perhaps you should be aiming at 7.5 hours instead?
+ 15 minutes to fall asleep, or whatever you need.

6:46 AM
'Ello @Cerberus.
4.6% in 10 hours ... Then, umm, it'll be 25*10 = 250.
I'm not sure if I'll be alive by that time.

@Gigili Yeah it's pretty bad.

I'm sorry if it's an extremely time-consuming process.

Is downloading torrents always this slow for you?
Don't worry, it doesn't bother me at all.
Perhaps it is fast if I create a file in my Dropbox and send you the link.

@Cerberus No, it depends. Sometimes it's faster. But downloading a movie takes a day at best.

@Gigili So you are getting a much lower speed with this particular torrent?

6:50 AM
I infer you are talking about GD?

Yup.
Gigi downloaded 90 MB from me in ten hours or so.
Her upload speed is about 1.28 kB/s, so that could be it.

Getting rid of inessential files may help. For example, those sound and picture files (*.files.zip) combined are at least 2 GB in size.
Oh, 90 MB in 10 hours? Wow.

Yeah, but won't the dictionary look ugly then?

Well, IDK, with those speeds her traffic could as well be limited. Pay per MB or whatever.

Hmm but she says she has downloaded large files in the past, and she is on DSL.

6:54 AM
Oh and by the way @Cerberus, I have just kicked an active war against an enemy whose deck is empty. You can help if you want. :P

I'm packing at least one dictionary in a RAR file and putting it in my Dropbox (will take 30 minutes to upload).

Hmm, yeah, then Dropbox should probably work.

But, you know, my upload speed is also low.

RAR won't help, the pictures and sounds are already zipped, and the DSLs are dictzipped in my version.

Perhaps I should use Opera Unite instead.

6:56 AM
Unless you are sending your own dictionary files. In which case you should use the dictzip utility.

@Vitaly Just to make it a single file.

Ah.

@Vitaly How does that work?

@Cerberus I guess so, yes. But I'm not sure.

@Gigili I really can't explain it, then.

6:57 AM
@Cerberus Well, if you are trying to make it a single file, no need to worry; if you are trying to make the DSLs smaller, drop the DSL file onto LoadDictZip.vbs and wait till it says it's finished

It took a very long time to start last time I downloaded a torrent from Vit, which was equally inexplicable.
@Vitaly Ah OK.
I suppose the file can be made much smaller, since it is a text file?
I may try that sometime.
Though I think Pokorny is not that large anyway.

Well, yeah. It's essentially making an archive out of it.
> In order to efficiently store dictionary data, dictzip, an extension to the gzip compression format (also the name of the utility) can be used to compress a .dict file. Dictzip compresses file in chunks and stores the chunk index in the gzip file header, thus allowing random access to the data.

By the way, I found a scanned version of Pokorny a while ago.
So I could check accents and such.

Kewl.
@Vitaly kicked off*

Done.
Even I can win that.

7:02 AM
Thanks.

Odd that a one-man faction with an empty deck should be in a range where we can still get points from it.
Or did you just pick it because you still get 1 point from a low faction and it was for free?

Well, that faction is almost always at +1 infamy. I was lucky to catch that precious moment.
We'll be getting 5 or 6 points from them.
Factions disband all the time, but the former leader of this one decided to leave it for people to farm. Or possibly for his new faction to farm.

@Gigili snail mail a CD or a flash drive?

Ah OK.

@DavidWallace What?
Oh.
Done

7:08 AM
OK.

Thank you very much.

@Gigili You're trying to send Cerberus a file that's going to take 250 hours to upload, and probably crash halfway through? Or did I read that wrong?

The rar file at the bottom is the one you might want to download first.
@DavidWallace It wouldn't crash, but otherwise yes.
But I've provided a quicker way.

OK, but I still think my suggestion to snail a disc made sense.

@Gigi: Is it working? I see I am uploading at 50 kB/s now (I have capped it at 50, so that is the maximum).
@DavidWallace Why?

7:11 AM
Because it would probably take less than 250 hours to arrive?

It would be slow and expensive.
If it arrived at all.

@Cerberus It's working very well.

@DavidWallace The current method should take 21 hours or less.
@Gigili OK good.

Well I hope it's a very exciting file when it arrives.

If you ever want a quick way to share a large file, use Opera Unite.
I have been using it for years.
Never let me down.

7:12 AM
Noted.

Somehow it is far more reliable than torrents.
@DavidWallace It'd better!
It's just some dictionary files for use with a dictionary reader.
You wouldn't need it.
Hehe.

cries nobody sends me exciting files that take 21 hours to arrive.

@DavidWallace What kind of file would you like to have, Mr Jealous?
I'm not sending naked videos of Marjory again.

@Cerberus Like you need a dictionary any more than I do.

Well, I need some dictionaries.
Academic dictionaries, like Pokorny, and various other etymological dictionaries.
And things like Wikipedia would be nice.

7:15 AM
@Cerberus Well, half of the excitement would be not knowing what the file was until 21 hours later.

Hehe.
I can make a large file with random noise for you?

@Cerberus I'd spend the rest of my life looking for the hidden content.

It works for birthday presents, not files. You wouldn't like to see it was a nice virus after 21 hours.

Staring at ones and zeros, huh.

If it's truly random, I wouldn't mind it!

7:17 AM
@Gigili Not even if the virus were really nice?
With a cute hat?
@Vitaly You know this software that creates "random" numbers based on cosmic radiation?

sigh

Still not random, obviously.
Wai sai?
Longing?

@Gigili You could get a birthday present by post, with a nice virus inside.

Frustration?
Like the cold virus?

No?

7:19 AM
Yes, there could be a computer virus on the CD, and a big gooey chunk of biological virus on the back of the CD.

@Cerberus so are there any particular dictionaries you are sending that I don't have? and what is Gigili's d/l speed in general? because it might be faster if I upload my GD somewhere or just torrent it

@Vitaly Nope, none that you don't have. I have only the ones you gave me.
I capped my upload speed at 50 kB/s.
Out of ca. 80–90 max.

And the authorities might be suspicious if the volume of internet traffic leaving Iran is suddenly doubled.

But I think Gigi's provider is throttling her. Or mine is throttling me (which is unlikely, because I normally don't notice anything like this).
Hey, she seems to be catching up again.
The solid bar is at 50 kB/s.
Then those weird spikes appeared, and it slowed to 20 kB/s average.

So she's using Windows, right?

7:24 AM
Now it's something in between.
I believe so.
Why?

Just making sure because GD is a windows app in that package

I think the issue is with her connection to the European network.
I think she is only downloading one dictionary.
Yet.
I think she already has GD installed?

Oh.

@Cerberus Oh, I thought she was sending something to you. Proves I can't read.

@DavidWallace Reading is hard. Like hand reading? Somehow I just see lines.

7:26 AM
@Cerberus my speedtest for Tehran gives me only 5 Mbps for upload speed

Hmm speed is back to 50 kB/s.
@Vitaly Only 6 Mb/s?? Outrageous!
So it's probably her provider?

Could very well be.

She is getting a much worse speed than the average Iranian.
Speedtest gave her an F+ as compared with her compatriots.
And her friend got much better speed as well.

@Vitaly Haha, nice.

7:28 AM
for Moscow; and similar speeds for some parts of Europe that are directly connected to Russia

I wonder why IPs throttle upload speed here and not in Russia.

I'll go to university in one hour, maybe the speed would be better there @Cerberus?

@Gigili Nope.
Only if you get Vitaly to upload it to you.
I can't get any higher than this.

I could try via Opera Unite too, but what dictionary exactly?

@Gigili The throttling that happened with this Opera download was only temporary anyway: you are now maxing out my upload cap.
No idea, never used it.
She wanted it.
Perhaps she didn't know it was available online?
Or she wanted quicker access (he browsing is slow)?
In any case, it will take about an hour at this speed.
But she could download two dictionaries at once.
One from me, one from you.
@Vitaly Oh, actually, she has 0.44 Mb/s download speed.
So she is already maxing it out like this, hehe.

7:34 AM
@Cerberus Gah. You could have said that earlier!

Perhaps the spikes were due to her browsing to some site.
@Vitaly Sorry, I forgot.
That is, I never calculated what her maximum download speed was—just looked at her Speedtest screenshot once when we wanted to determine her upload speed.
Her download speed didn't seem relevant at the time.

@Gigili Are you here?

I am
Thank you Vit.

How's it going?

She could try it anyway, who knows.
Perhaps there is some weird cap per route?
dubious look

7:41 AM
@Vitaly I guess it makes the other one slower. Should I download both of them at the same time?

Upload rate has decreased to about 30 kB/s.
How much do you get for Vit's upload?

@Cerberus I see 30 kB/s here too. So she's capped at 60 kB/s by her Internet Service Provider

Ah OK.

Not much of a difference…

Then I'd do one at a time.
Because she has to browse too in the meantime.
Besides, this looks inefficient:
It's funny how a graph can tell you what others are doing.
And creepy. I'm closing the graph.

7:44 AM
@Cerberus Hahaha.

Well, it's true, innit?
Hey @Vit, what do you think, is my university's VPN encrypted?

So I guess @Gigili is better off downloading from you because her download speed is capped at about the same value as your upload speed
@Cerberus No idea?

@Cerberus Isn't that the definition of a VPN?

That is, can someone see what I'm doing if I am on a public Wifi but through the VPN?
@DavidWallace The Private part?
I am not sure.
@Vitaly exactly.
So maybe she should stop your download.

@Cerberus Are you encrypting it on your own PC, or somewhere upstream?

7:47 AM
@Cerberus Yeah.

I'm not encrypting anything, and I have no idea how the VPN works exactly.

@Vitaly Done.

If your PC is connected to a VPN, then it is encrypting and decrypting.

@Gigili OK. Sorry I couldn't have been much of a help.

@DavidWallace OK, good.

7:49 AM
@Cerberus and if you're on a public wifi, people can see how much you're doing, but not what it is.

@Vitaly No need to apologise on behalf of her provider.
@DavidWallace OK, with any kind of VPN? It's always encrypted?

@Cerberus Umm, usual disclaimer about not being responsible for any loss or damage you incur by following my advice.

@DavidWallace Too late! I'm suing!
I thought it was encrypted, but I asked just to be sure.

@RegDwight I'll not be able to play Tyrant for a while, up to 2 weeks. Something happened to my spine, gotta call an ambulance later today.

@Vitaly Wow, seriously?
What happened?

7:51 AM
@Vitaly You were helpful enough, Thank you.

@Cerberus tripped in the dark :P

@Vitaly Oh Jesus.
Why didn't you go to hospital right away?

Meh.

Does it hurt? Can you walk?

Yes and yes.

7:52 AM
Nerve pain?

From Picky weedier - "Some virtual networks may not use encryption to protect the data contents. While VPNs often provide security, an unencrypted overlay network does not neatly fit within the secure or trusted categorization. For example a tunnel set up between two hosts that used Generic Routing Encapsulation (GRE) would in fact be a virtual private network, but neither secure nor trusted."

@Cerberus Probably.

@Vitaly You should be able to feel the difference between nerve pain and a bruise.

@Vitaly Holy crap, will you be OK?

@DavidWallace I guess so.

7:54 AM
I heard Russian doctors are decent?

Please get to the hospital right away. It may be more difficult later.

I'll come to take you to a hospital. Seriously.

Dictum.

I would too, but I can't swim that far.

Oh, the typical laconic nature of Slavs.

7:57 AM
@DavidWallace There's something called airplane, badly helpful in such situations.

Well, it's not like hospitals in Russia are any good anyway. Most of the doctors are only warming up their chairs, as we say here in Russia. So if I am screwed, I am screwed, no matter how fast I do it. But I am making an educated guess that it's nothing serious and it can wait.

I have to go, bye.

CU.

@Vitaly and by the time you change your mind, you'll be unable to move.
@Gigili TTFN

I'll leave it like that @Cerberus, thank you for everything.
