I'd like to alert you to this project by the well-known sculptor Vera Röhm:

https://www.vitabuvingi.de/?page_id=3604

The goal is to obtain translations from 2000 languages of the world of the above statement: "The night is the shadow of the earth". I by chance met the guy who collects the translations, Eric Giebel. Please contact him, if you think you can provide/obtain additional translations. The languages covered already are listed here:

In spite of that, I find it difficult to link what I am reading - the bare words and phrases - with any actual meaning if I do not parse the text.
Is this a problem any of you have faced - if not, are there any recorded cases of this problem? Are there people whose brains cannot link syntax with semantics?
Secondly, how can I rectify this problem? I have only had this problem for a year; before that, I had little difficulty understanding what I was reading. I am sure there are better ways of retaining information than parsing (which can often be headache-inducing).

When reading for pleasure, I often find myself parsing the text I am reading, trying to understand its syntax. This I do to understand the meaning of the text; indeed, parsing has helped me to better retain information. But it is not convenient whatsoever, and in all honesty it takes the pleasure out of reading.

Hair-splitting is kind of offensive. It's also kind of offensive to criticize a person for ending a sentence with a preposition or saying "ain't". I should also point out that two wrongs don't make a right. If a person does not make a distinction between the 99 kinds of writing systems because they don't consider the differences to be

It's always a mistake to insist "you're using the wrong word, you need to use these words from some foreign language / alien discipline". Your point probably got lost over an unimportant issue, namely whether you should import words from another language in order to talk about simple ideas.

@lemontree I don't know what "Sanskrit is language of attributes with no proper nouns" means, but I suspect it's bullshit.

When you say "I think English is the easiest language when it comes to pronunciation", let me respectfully but vehemently disagree. English is full of consonant clusters and has more diphthongs than words. Its pronunciation is not "easy" in any objective terms, and, if anything, it is Japanese pronunciation that can be claimed to be objectively easy, as the language is very strictly limited to a CV structure with just a couple of exceptions. — LjL May 2 '17 at 14:16

@HizHa I find your last comment really quite offensive. You're backhandedly insulting someone, while knowing that the victim of your insult is probably not going to come here and reply to you. I'm sure all the users of this room would appreciate it if you could keep your comments constructive and positive.

@HizHa I am seriously shocked and a little confused now. I was trying to help you, spending a lot of time on my answer and hoping your problem was now resolved, and suddenly I read you're making an appeal for everyone to collect how "abusive" and "insulting" I've been throughout the past. At the moment I can't think of much more than "Umm, what?" and "Wow, now *this* is insulting."
It seems like the whole point you are basing your outrage on was the word "prediction". Would you please explain how this makes my answer an insult?! "Prediction" means simply that you made an assumption about ho

But at a level of abstraction/complexity/scrutiny higher, an infelicitous statement is one that violates one of the four Gricean maxims, with the assumption that what you're analysing, be it a discourse or conversation or utterance, follows Grice's Cooperative Principle. You can look these up to learn more.

@HizHa As @curiousdannii said, please stop bringing up vague — and unsubstantiated — accusations along with inflammatory statements that you're posting here in chat. If you want to discuss on this issue civilly, post on Meta so that any interested (or even third) party can voice their point of view and solve this issue once and for all. Stirring up drama doesn't help anyone.

@WavesWashSands In my experience the university-wide carreer advisors are not very helpful because they are lacking the subject-specific knowledge, but of course I've talked to professors/people I've worked for. The tenor was that if I endeed enjoy diving into theory more than doing practical stuff, I should invest the few more years to do a PhD; I'm a few years younger compared the average graduate in my area about to start a PhD which I'm repeatedly being told I should take advantage of. From what I've heard

As for me, I'm somwehat in the middle of a little existential crisis... In short, now that I'm approaching the end of my M.A. I seriously regret having studied linguistics and have pretty much no idea what to do in a few months from now. My gut feeling tells me that I actually would like to stay in the academic field, I just think that this fits me better than some job in the industry and most of all I would seriously miss the teaching if I were to leave university, the tutoring is what I have enjoyed by far the most in my studies. But then again I've realized more and more in th

@HsMjstyMstdn I'm sure most or all of the Indo-European languages that have a word with similar sounds are descended from the same root!
