Hair-splitting is kind of offensive. It's also kind of offensive to criticize a person for ending a sentence with a preposition or saying "ain't". I should also point out that two wrongs don't make a right. If a person does not make a distinction between the 99 kinds of writing systems because they don't consider the differences to be

significant enough to comment on, it's impolite to chastise them, and it's really bad if you unify two different systems like Devanagari and Ge'ez which are "totally different", on the grounds that the difference between the two is too small to be worth inventing new terms for. However, as a neutral report on what some people do, it's okay. Some people use offensive words: reporting that is not itself offensive. Were you trying to persuade someone that such and such is "right,
true" or were you just reporting "some people say / believe"?
Personally, I believe in "true" and "right", but you have to be consistent in the principles that you use in evaluating what others believe and say.
