As for coming (in)to power, although both forms aren't as popular in this context, I believe they're both perfectly valid.

@ElementsInSpace Also, I'd like to point out that the phrase come into power isn't rendered old-fashioned by that Ngram. The thing is that came to power there doesn't necessarily only refer to our phrase; in includes instances like "Bowen was much more frank when it came to power stations" and "When it came to Power Rangers, Higgins wrote the big epic lore-busting series while Ryan Parrott handled the character-driven series." all of which I was able to find in books. Unfortunately, you can't isolate this phrase in the context we're discussing. But it's very much still valid today.

@ElementsinSpace And I happen to like the sound of into in this context. My problem isn't with either one of those prepositions — I personally would've said they seized power. What I don't like is your assertion about into being passive and especially "inappropriate," neither of which it is.

I was inspiring to itself makes absolutely no sense grammatically or semantically. So it's a minus from me. And in your example, I'd say that the protagonist convinced himself that he was a number.

What an excellent answer to something that even after ten years of studying Russian, never occurred to me. And the fact that it dates back to PIE makes it even more fascinating.

And apparently the Russian versions are no better. It takes a tremendous ego to post these War-and-Peace responses in incomprehensible, archaic, interminable language.

она у+тешит - in translation on S-O relations it can be like: she will end the distress - object is distress, but in russian we say not about objects but about verbal conditions. Probably most of rus verbs are close to something "before" phrase verbs, but in some forms of them(with prefixes) are like Phrase Verbs.
