Hello everyone

I have an annoying issue compiling a document with quite a few "large" png files

I actually don't know if those are the ones responsible, but anyway

I am using latexmk with xelatex to compile

and at every xelatex iteration, the output gets stuck a long time (>15sec) on [N] (./file.aux)

So a single compilation is like 1 minute for a 3 page document with >10 images

why is that? How can I fix this? I never encountered this in years of using latexmk

@nathdwek Use \usepackage[demo]{graphicx}. If the compilation is then faster then the graphics are the problem. If not: compile xelatex directly to better see where the delay is (with xelatex it could be also the font cache).

pngs are about 10M each...

Does this size have an influence on the size of the aux file?

@nathdwek No. Probably the delay is when xelatex is reading the png to get its size. You could try to get the size and add it to the includegraphics options.

This is not a solution as It would require even more time from me to determine the size of every figure I want included

and they're regularly regenerated

Are there any well-documented LaTeX3 packages around? The documentation for LaTeX3 is quite good so far, but it's lacking in examples that use the new interfaces.

@Robbie v2 of siunitx uses expl3 but the idea of 'code interfaces' wasn't fully developed when I wrote it ...

@JosephWright I've been using siunitx as a good guide: your code is really nice to read. It does quite different things to what my own packages will though, so it's a bit hard to generalise ways of solving different problems.

I'd decided to jump straight into LaTeX3 for writing my own packages as 2e felt a lot harder to comprehend.

The main problems I'm looking at trying to solve are modifying reference labels on-the-fly, and creating environments that contain coffins.

I'm not yet sure how to ask well-formed questions on SE as usually my MWEs are either too big or not detailed enough.

I have a brand new distro, from september this year ish

And perl just stops working

Reinstalling perl doesn't do anything

And my package (feynmp) makes hideous diagrams

Reinstalling tex live takes the better part of a day, and a lot of pampering (time and effort I am disinclined to invest)

Hence the obvious question: does a quick fix for this kind of issue exist

@user55789 at this point I would give up here and take it (as text not as an image) to the texlive list ([email protected]) where people who understand tlmgr internals (= Norbert:-) are probably more reliable than me guessing (especially as I have never used the windows texlive, even though I use texlive on windows, I always use cygwin to have a more unix-like experience:-)
