Q: How to reference a node's anchor by optional parameter (#2) inside a style when that node is referenced by parameter (#1) itself?

bp2017I have a style (POSITION) that references a node by parameter \documentclass{standalone} \usepackage{tikz} \usetikzlibrary {% positioning, shapes.geometric } \tikzset {% POSITION/.style= {% below=0mm of #1.left corner, anchor=ap...

@CarLaTeX I do wonder what the code i just posted did.
@CarLaTeX Well, we (or, at least, I) did try to say .... But, as I say, you evidently have the wizard's formula.
@cfr Don't ask me, it was too much above my level of knowledge :)
@cfr Friends call me MaggiCa (reading the next TUBboat issue or the tikzducks documentation you'll understand why)

@Johannes_B Do you have a matching dup for that question at hand?
@TeXnician I would close it as a dupe of How to customize a titlepage*.
@TeXnician Almost every titlepage question on site can be answered by read an introduction, it is just stacking boxes. All are duplicates for me.
@Johannes_B Agreed. I voted to close.

Q: Problem with Inserting Logo in Cover Page PhD Thesis

AryanI am novice in latex. I downloaded the PhD thesis template from https://github.com/suchow/} and slightly amend it to suit the requirements of my university. Everything is working fine! Today, I decided to add the logo of my university to the cover page but it does not appear where it is supposed ...

Q: use of titlepage producing extra blank page

user149418When multiple titlepages are used, they produced an extra blank page before the table of contents. How to remove the extra blank page? Q: Title page with several lines, logo and abstract

userIT8991I am trying to create a title page with (in order): logo, title, subtitle, author name, department, university and abstract (possibly with title bigger than subtitle). This is my code but it does not work properly: \documentclass[12pt,twoside]{report} \begin{document} \begin{titlepage} \begin{ce...

@TeXnician Look at the three questions above. Any thoughts?
@Johannes_B This one I would close as dup looking at the title, but as off-topic (problem is solved by loading a required package) looking at the content.
@Johannes_B This one should probably be answered (that trick with the color might not seem obvious).
@TeXnician I don't know what to do with the question. tex.stackexchange.com/questions/209993/… has an example with a graphic, but knowing how to use a graphic has nothing to do with titles.
@TeXnician But the colored toc has nothing to do with the titlepage.
What to do with this question? tex.stackexchange.com/questions/326867/…
7:27 AM
@Johannes_B Well, I voted to close as off-topic, let's see what the reviewers say.
@TeXnician I will skip this question in the review queue :-)
@Johannes_B That's of course of big help ;)
@Johannes_B I don't really know how to deal with that. But it seems like a customize title page question (as the code is visible in the cls file).
@TeXnician From my point of view, it is wrong to use a template for Harvard University if you are not in Harvard. But this is my general don't use templates kind of thing.
7:32 AM
@Johannes_B Do we have a question we could link to (a why not to use templates)?
@TeXnician We have tex.stackexchange.com/questions/309614/what-is-a-template/… But it isn't really suitable. Or is it?
@Johannes_B No, we also have tex.stackexchange.com/questions/51204/working-with-templates which doesn't help either. I'll ask one (worst case: it's getting closed).
@TeXnician $\left.\right.$\\
@TeXnician We also have en.wikibooks.org/wiki/LaTeX/…

A: Why should you avoid to use (complex) templates?

TeXnicianTo start with a quote (from Wikibook): If a friend of yours wants to give you his/her template, it is a very nice gesture. Say Thanks, but no, Thanks. You won't believe how many strange stuff is in there without him/her even noticing it. All those are little tripwires that you don't want in y...

@Johannes_B Maybe you want to add a more detailed answer.
@TeXnician No, that's good.
@TeXnician Maybe you can add that learning how to present the research is just as important as learning how to get data and analyse it. But that would be specific to thesis writing and templates.
@Johannes_B Not really, that's valid for nearly everything (as the key point is: understand what you do -> understand what you should change and what should stay at the default).
@TeXnician You've already written all I had in my mind! :)
8:38 AM
@TeXnician you forgot to add: always avoid tikz and use picture mode instead.
@DavidCarlisle Well, I guess that's the good thing about templates. I've never seen one that uses picture mode instead of TikZ!

@DavidCarlisle And name every macro \zz or \zzzzz or \zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz ;-)
@ChristianHupfer as you are German you could use \ßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßß (and luatex)
@DavidCarlisle I prefer \öäüääääüüüü however... but I don't use luatex, so I have to stick to boring names like \dontdothis or \doubledollarstartsdisplaymath ;-)
@ChristianHupfer or \zzzz (except no one can ever find z on a German keyboard)

Q: Reducing blank space in the "ModernCv Banking" template

Al jabraI am working with the cv template here. I want to remove any excess blank space. I have got rid of the quote but the education section will not shift up. How can I shift the layout and each of the sections up?

unclear?
@DavidCarlisle: Let me help you ;-)
10:28 AM
@ChristianHupfer yes so every time you yank text in emacs, you suspend the process.
@DavidCarlisle I use a keyboard switch accelerator to change between US and German layout. I actually rarely use the German layout, so no worries about suspending processes ;-)
@Johannes_B ... too localized perhaps, but that vtc reason has been removed years ago
@ChristianHupfer Unclear to me. The question could have been Do you know where my car keys are? and i could have suggested Have you checked your pockets?. Not helpful to anybody.
@DavidCarlisle See CTAN releases have gone
@DavidCarlisle I guess we want 'file name parsing' on agenda for tomorrow?
@Johannes_B VtC
10:47 AM
@ChristianHupfer Sitting on a german keyboard is hard for me. I always have trouble finding the :. It always Ö, which is confusing.
@Johannes_B I don't recommend sitting on any keyboard. Unless you're a duck, of course.
@HaraldHanche-Olsen I am a penguin. Does that count?
@Johannes_B Just make sure the egg doesn't roll off your feet, and you'll be okay.
@JosephWright oddly enough I was trying just now to get a modified filename parse to put up for discussion before then...
@JosephWright amsmath or something else?
@DavidCarlisle Good plan: I meant the 'policy' we are going for :)
10:54 AM
@HaraldHanche-Olsen or a cat
@DavidCarlisle Yes, AMS ocde
@DavidCarlisle Indeed: they are famous for it
@JosephWright yes but best to check what's possible for deciding that the policy is to do something infeasible:-)
@DavidCarlisle I would never recommend anything to a cat. They do as they damn well please anyhow.
@DavidCarlisle Indeed
@JosephWright so questions are what does this do (I know the answer to that) and what should it do in a new era (not totally clear on that)
  \usepackage{array , "longtable" , "after"page, if then}
@JosephWright amazingly enough it went without a single reprimand from the ctan team I (or l3build) must be getting better:-)
11:00 AM
@HaraldHanche-Olsen Ducks don't type ... they use QCR ... quack recognition software ;-)
@JosephWright I'm assuming that the aim would be to drop " (so they don't show in \listfiles etc) to drop spaces around commas (so , longtable , works) but not drop other spaces, so if then fails even though it works now.
@ChristianHupfer ↓↓↓
In computer programming, duck typing is an application of the duck test in type safety. It requires that type checking be deferred to runtime, and is implemented by means of dynamic typing or reflection. Duck typing is concerned with establishing the suitability of an object for some purpose, using the principle, "If it walks like a duck and it quacks like a duck, then it must be a duck." With normal typing, suitability is assumed to be determined by an object's type only. In duck typing, an object's suitability is determined by the presence of certain methods and properties (with appropriate meaning...
@HaraldHanche-Olsen That is about the noun 'type' but not on typing (entering information) ;-)
@ChristianHupfer It's my day off. I don't do grammar. (So why am I at the office, working away?)

@ChristianHupfer not a German duck presumably
11:16 AM
@DavidCarlisle Nor French!
@HaraldHanche-Olsen perhaps it's a Brazilian typing its thesis

@DavidCarlisle No wonder it's taking so long. There isn't enough body weight there to depress the keys on a regular keyboard. Or do you think it got one custom made?
11:35 AM
@PauloCereda Where are you? See the above messages ^^^
11:47 AM
@DavidCarlisle A cute duck, however
@ChristianHupfer needs a few more weeks before it will be ready for the table

@DavidCarlisle you are not mean :)
@DavidCarlisle He was probably just telling you that you're not average.
12:03 PM
@HaraldHanche-Olsen do you ever get a feeling of déjà vu in this chat room?
@DavidCarlisle @PauloCereda wrote that in a state of mental confusion ;-)
@DavidCarlisle Yeah, all the time, all over again.
@ChristianHupfer How do you know that's not his normal state?
@HaraldHanche-Olsen Of course I can't know this, true, but I have a strong intuition that the statement @DavidCarlisle being mean concerning anything related to ducks is true, so @PauloCereda seems to be right ;-)
@ChristianHupfer But ducks are delicious! And cute (especially when young). No contradiction there.

@Johannes_B Voted to close as unclear. This may actually have been a bug (I vaguely remember a problem with xelatex which might have looked like this), but without knowing the beamer version and engine impossible to say...

@DavidCarlisle Oooh I like the description of the debugshow option to the tabulary package: Causes a lot of stuff to appear on the terminal. I find this invaluable, you may find it less so.
@HaraldHanche-Olsen I always try to provide in-depth documentation for my packages.

@TeXnician Remember that @DavidCarlisle and I just go \tracingall to solve issues ;)
@DavidCarlisle Looking at that a second time, I really think the comma should have been a semicolon.

I tried scoping the solution provided by this answer to another question elsewhere to just the section I wanted it to affect by re-\letting \@afterindenttrue be its original value afterward, but that didn't work. I suspect that you can only apply that kind of trick to whole documents, because I tried it inside a document environment instead of in my preamble and froze pdflatex.
The indentfirst package obviously won't work, either, since its effects also apply to your entire document since package inclusion has to happen inside your document's preamble.
9:18 PM
@RandomDSdevel indentfirst is exactly one line of code, you could obviously do equivalent locally at any point but indenting the first pararagraph or not is a style choice, it is highly unusual to change your mind about such a style mid document, what is the use case here?
@DavidCarlisle: texdoc simplified-latex, Chapter 2, Exercise 2. Using the quotation environment just…didn't feel right (y'know, since it adds extra non-hanging indentation on both the left and the right sides of the text it encloses.)
@RandomDSdevel your question isn't clear as you reference a question about all indentation but then discuss indentfirst which is about a different thing, the indentation just after section heads.
@RandomDSdevel the question asks how to customise those settings it doesn't ask that you do them all in the same document (which really makes no sense)
@DavidCarlisle Whoops, guess I didn't realize the difference in constraints might confuse people. I've got my answers to parts 'a,' 'b,' 'c,' and 'd' of that exercise separated into sections, so I meant with respect to the latter.
@RandomDSdevel in any case it doesn't mention section headings so I don't think indentfirst or @afterheading are relevant
@DavidCarlisle Weeeeelll…it didn't say not to, either.
@DavidCarlisle I just put the different sub-items of the exercise into different sections by arbitrary choice.
9:28 PM
@RandomDSdevel latex did not have to constrain package loading to the start of the document, it does so mostly as a way of enforcing a level of document consistency, so the fact that it's inconvenient to change some of these settings mid document is by design and certainly it is not (or should not) be the intention of a beginners tutorial exercise to teach how to subvert that consistent design aim.
@DavidCarlisle: Ah, good point. Now why didn't that thought enter into my head…? (Shrugs.) In any case, I guess I'll either implement your suggestion to duplicate indentfirst's internals inside my document or just split it into four pieces, one for each of the exercise's sub-parts, and leave it at that.
Thanks for the quick help, by the way!
