> Microsoft today launched a preview version of a new programming language for quantum computing called Q#. The industry giant also launched a quantum simulator that developers can use to test and debug their quantum algorithms.
09:05
@UlrikeFischer: almost 50 views of the duck video!
@PauloCereda their example for running a Bell test docs.microsoft.com/en-us/quantum/… only demonstrates classical correlations :(
@DaiBowen I thought the same. :)
@PauloCereda A great success!
@CarLaTeX yes :)
10:03
@PauloCereda @CarLaTeX We are working on it to spread it around (someone from Borussia called my husband "Dr. Duck" last weekend ;-)).
@UlrikeFischer ooh :D
@UlrikeFischer Is he van Duck's relative?

Hello everyone
I have an annoying issue compiling a document with quite a few "large" png files
I actually don't know if those are the ones responsible, but anyway
I am using latexmk with xelatex to compile
and at every xelatex iteration, the output gets stuck a long time (>15sec) on [N] (./file.aux)
So a single compilation is like 1 minute for a 3 page document with >10 images
why is that? How can I fix this? I never encountered this in years of using latexmk
@nathdwek Use \usepackage[demo]{graphicx}. If the compilation is then faster then the graphics are the problem. If not: compile xelatex directly to better see where the delay is (with xelatex it could be also the font cache).
@UlrikeFischer: Yeah graphics are the problem
pngs are about 10M each...
Does this size have an influence on the size of the aux file?
@nathdwek No. Probably the delay is when xelatex is reading the png to get its size. You could try to get the size and add it to the includegraphics options.
@UlrikeFischer I am not sure I follow what you mean?
10:45
@nathdwek Try something like \includegraphics[bb=0 0 40 40]{largepng.png} with the correct values for the bb key.
@UlrikeFischer For a moment, I read BB King. :)
This is not a solution as It would require even more time from me to determine the size of every figure I want included
and they're regularly regenerated
@nathdwek Try it out. If it helps: There are tools to get the sizes.
11:32
Hi all, anyone here with knowledge on tex distributions/texworks/perl/tex live manager
11:48
@user55789 That's a broad list: what exactly are you after?
12:14
@JosephWright revenge (sorry, I couldn't resist) :)

Q: Dean will not tell me what upcoming meeting is about. What do I do?

DRShortI am a tenured professor and co-chair at a small teaching college. I received an email last Friday morning from the head of facilities requesting confirmation of my attendance at a meeting for this coming Thursday, with the subject line "Facilities storage needs and 'MY_DEPT' space." The email wa...

I'm genuinely following this site for fun. It is amazing to see the extent of academia's social level.
@percusse :D
They barely make it above the primary school students.
Some of the answers are just incredible.
My favorites are Is it appropriate to do such and such? questions.
@percusse :)
@percusse 'Find them and ask them'?
@JosephWright 44 votes on talk to the dean :)
Check this one for its accepted answer, it is one of the golden ones

Q: What to do with a student coming to class in revealing clothing, to the degree that it disrupts the teaching environment?

je_bSince semester started, a female student has been attending classes scantily clad or wearing clothes that are too revealing, like a sport bra without shirt on top, booty shorts, semitransparent silk blouses without a bra, or even a bikini (this situation happened only once.) She does this once or...

12:22
@percusse It is an odd site: I don't think StackExchange works at all for these 'social' things (all opinion based and far too full of dire advice)
In English, I am distracted by boobies :)
Are there any well-documented LaTeX3 packages around? The documentation for LaTeX3 is quite good so far, but it's lacking in examples that use the new interfaces.
@Robbie I'm working on a third version of siunitx: a lot of the work there is to provide documented interfaces at the code level. github.com/josephwright/siunitx
@Robbie v2 of siunitx uses expl3 but the idea of 'code interfaces' wasn't fully developed when I wrote it ...
@JosephWright I've been using siunitx as a good guide: your code is really nice to read. It does quite different things to what my own packages will though, so it's a bit hard to generalise ways of solving different problems.
I'd decided to jump straight into LaTeX3 for writing my own packages as 2e felt a lot harder to comprehend.
@Robbie v2 is a bit of a mess in terms of a defined internal API ...
12:37
@JosephWright I've cloned the sources to v3 but I can't test it on my current documents as I also use the physics package, and that has a clash with one of the commands (\qty).
@Robbie Ah, the physics package ...
The main problems I'm looking at trying to solve are modifying reference labels on-the-fly, and creating environments that contain coffins.
I'm not yet sure how to ask well-formed questions on SE as usually my MWEs are either too big or not detailed enough.
@Ulri
@UlrikeFischer: I ended up making the image generation part also generate decent compressed jpeg for small reports and stuff, that's doing the job for the moment
@Robbie I guess the usual: break it down into reasonable 'chunks'
12:56
@JosephWright I want to update/install a package, TL manager crashes
I have a brand new distro, from september this year ish
And perl just stops working
Reinstalling perl doesn't do anything
And my package (feynmp) makes hideous diagrams
Reinstalling tex live takes the better part of a day, and a lot of pampering (time and effort I am disinclined to invest)
Hence the obvious question: does a quick fix for this kind of issue exist
@user55789 your question sounds too vague, sadly. You didn't even mention which distro you use. :)
@PauloCereda Latest
And I'm using win10 64 bit
13:11
@user55789 TL doesn't use system Perl, so that's not it
13:28
Hmm at least that's explained
I will try redownloading some fresh files for tlmngr
as a hail mary
14:18
@JosephWright we gave you \DeclareOption what else did you need? :-)
@user55789 do you get no error message from tlmgr ? also are you using the command line or the gui version?
@DavidCarlisle Not what I meant ;)
@DavidCarlisle For example, all of the v2 code is \__ so they really shouldn't be used in document commands, plus the data gets manipulated internally between different parts of the code ...
@JosephWright oh yes I was thinking of 2e/l3 even though you clearly meant siunitx v2/v3
14:37
@JosephWright: I think the expl3 documentation could be improved here: tex.stackexchange.com/q/405796/2388
@UlrikeFischer Hmm: I think the code might be wrong ...
@JosephWright wasn't [ + \-] intended ?
@DavidCarlisle I've mailed Bruno
@JosephWright It's good to have someone to blame
14:52
@DavidCarlisle Ah, yes: the regex replacement part was wrong too so that was confusing me ..
15:06
@JosephWright he's appeared on site:-)
@DavidCarlisle :)
@DavidCarlisle BTW, I've merged in the l3build multiple test stuff: we should make sure the 2e TU ones are updated ...
@JosephWright grrmbl

A: Cannot get two-column figures to show after the end of text

David CarlisleUnfortunately as well as the bioinfo.cls file itself the zip file distributed to authors includes obsolete versions of many packages that are part of the core latex distribution (graphicx, color) and major contributed packages including natbib, float and stdfloats.sty . Some combination of these...

@StefanKottwitz I tried to login to the french texwelt, my username and mail was already taken, so i guessed i have an account. -> Forget password link gave me back: Account suspended, spammer thingie. :-( I can't remember, if i ever really created an account there.
@PauloCereda Hola :-)
Can you leave a link?
@StefanKottwitz Try to search for a user name on TeXnique. I get a 500 server error. The site tells me to report to the admin. <- Done ;-)
18:41
@Johannes_B ^^
@PauloCereda Ooooooohhhhhhhh <3
Penguins are like honorary ducks. :)
19:01
@samcarter ^^^ We need to add a penguin to tikzducks
19:31
@PauloCereda but they are a bit rubbery to eat
@JosephWright Can you add an extra link to the duplicate text of this question. This question is a bit more general and would be good to be a duplicate link (as noted in the comments): tex.stackexchange.com/q/361486/105447
@DavidCarlisle I got very busy, but karma indeed. :)
@percusse I like the comment "liberal as your country may be, teaching classes in sandals won't give you any respect as a teacher." No, because you don't get respect from how you dress, you get it from knowing what you're talking about and explaining it in ways that help students learn.
19:51
@DavidCarlisle You're mean
@CarLaTeX @PauloCereda disagrees with you:

@AlanMunn LOL
@CarLaTeX A syntactician can't resist a good bit of recursion.
@AlanMunn I didn't even know that syntacticians exist!
@CarLaTeX We do. There are in fact some very important Italian ones.
@AlanMunn Ooooh
20:38
@CarLaTeX you can't ask whether or not they exist as that's not a syntactic question
@DavidCarlisle True. But that wasn't a question. ;)
@AlanMunn -- are you sure this is a good bit? maybe it's only a mediocre bit, or perhaps even a bad bit.
@CarLaTeX But if you did want to ask the question, we could tell you how to structure it.
@barbarabeeton :D Everyone's a critic.
@AlanMunn You have a lot to do here!
@AlanMunn -- yup. (if you want to see a real criticism, take a look at my last comment on the question you linked above re comments on a duplicate link.)

@barbarabeeton Well I agree on that one. I also like the Oxford comma. Although I don't think many styles implement it.
21:01
@DavidCarlisle Using the GUI version and getting no error. It crashes immediately.

@Brent.Longborough The probability that I consider DejaVu are infinitely greater than me thinking to listening who? At least DejaVu has a rich character set.
just saying...
@AlanMunn I think it was meant to be Oxford coma, running out of breath from enumerating things because of the moist weather
Rich character set
@percusse Even with my well-honed syntactician skills I can't parse that sentence.
@AlanMunn one huff two puff three oufff and four....
@percusse I really wanna know...
@percusse Not your sentence, the one you quoted.
Ahah they talk about the fonts mixed with the band puns
21:12
@percusse Ok. So desperately in need of a 'to' and a 'The', and an 'is'.
@user55789 hard to give an error if the window is going, I assume the command line version is in the native windows texlive? , tlmgr update --all
@AlanMunn Elder AngloSaxon is not my forte :)
@percusse Well thankfully you're not the responsible party.
@user55789 I guess you should do what it says in the last two lines of that image
21:25
Error opening file for writing ".../bin/win32/runscript.dll"
(Ran the .exe as admin)
@user55789 at this point I would give up here and take it (as text not as an image) to the texlive list ([email protected]) where people who understand tlmgr internals (= Norbert:-) are probably more reliable than me guessing (especially as I have never used the windows texlive, even though I use texlive on windows, I always use cygwin to have a more unix-like experience:-)
@DavidCarlisle Ah I might. Thanks regardless, your effort is appreciated
@DavidCarlisle Actually, as it looks now, your command line approach may have solved the issue of updating, since it's happily updating all the packages now.
Windows works in mysterious ways...
21:41
@user55789 Windows works fine as long as you avoid the windows part of it (I use X windows mostly:-)
