There are lots of jokes about game culture too. Basically you're debugging an MMO, and that chick on the bottom is running around inside it.

Apparently it's an eastern thing
"shooting game" seems like an even worse generic term for them than Shooter

Check out Crunch Time. It's free, and surprisingly entertaining.

@GnomeSlice You sound like you swallowed a radio ad announcer :)

@Sterno I handled the x-com tags. Only thing I'm not doing is the because tftd is common enough among the target audience.

@BenBrocka This wouldn't surprise me.

5:04 PM
@RavenDreamer cool

@Sterno That seems like it won't work long term. After 10 grants, you could be giving out a ton of games for each grant.

@JasonBerkan Yeah, and I didn't see anything in the original post that said it either. But I guess by that point, 200 people each trying to get 8 questions is going to not be sustainable, either :P

@Sterno Yeah - that would be a LOT of questions.

I suspect the conditions might get tougher too.

@GraceNote I've never heard a westerner say anything but shmup or shooter
Anyway, halp needed, should I break this into separate Qs or is this okay as is:

Q: How can I beat the True Final Boss of Hitogata Happa?

Ben BrockaThe True Final Boss of Hitogata Happa is the one part I have extreme difficulty with even on Euridice difficulty. Is there some strategy or set of dolls I can use that perform better on her? The "dolls" part of the fight I understand but I still die a lot on. Does she have a set amount of each d...

also, we had no bullet-hell tag?

5:07 PM
@James I... what?
Also, my computer just crashed.

@GnomeSlice I had nothing to do with that! :)

@BenBrocka Because we don't really need to separate it from shmups, also because we don't do platform/genre tags on questions unless it's important to the question itself (in your case, it isn't)

K, wasn't sure what we did about genre tags, I just noticed we had them

The only purpose of having a separate tag for curtain fire games is to further categorize which games are those, and that's not how tags can (currently) work on the site.

5:08 PM
I LOVE that sound at 2:54!

Can I used the Round 2 Grant to go back and get KoA? :/

x_x

seems like it could be helpful to me though, at least strategy help could be given by genre, sort of like how SO tags programming languages

@OrigamiRobot Your options are Mass Effect 3.
@BenBrocka Yeah, but in the SO case, it's generally a requirement on the actual problem given. In our case, it's an inherent trait of the game itself - looking for, say, shmup should bring you hitogata-happa as an example.

@GraceNote Can I get it bundled with a TV and a 360? :P

5:10 PM
@OrigamiRobot I doubt it.

@Lesspop I didn't need that retweet

@GraceNote true, I guess we don't use tags for categorizing in that way then?

Man, that is such a cool sound.
I wonder if that's 100% synthesized.

Is today Michigan's primary?

@BenBrocka It's not currently feasible in the current system, no. Also no one is consistent enough for it to work.

5:12 PM
K. Do we have any tags to indicate the type of problem (strategy/tips in this case?)

@RavenDreamer Oh, I might have asked this already, but, is there a theme to this game?
theme/mood

Can someone answer this question for me: meta.gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/4055/…

@GnomeSlice Other than that everything is made out of Stained Glass, and you're an angry Viking?
The, "Bull in a china-shop" mentality?
No, not really.

@RavenDreamer Angry?
I'm just wondering what the mood is.
i.e. horror themed? Cartoony?
I'm pretty worried that I'm not going to be able to do it, lol.

@James The current Grant system is geared towards questions.

5:14 PM
@GnomeSlice Definitely more tongue-in-cheek.

@GraceNote I surmised that after the last few giveaways.. I am just wondering why since wouldnt good answers be more drawing for people to come to the SE sites?

@BenBrocka Great game.
I'm glad someone else likes Blurst.

@James Only the most recent one before this one required only questions.

Although to be fair, that game is about trying NOT to break stuff. Mostly.

5:15 PM
Hey, since this question is about buying armor for a horse, shouldn't it be closed as a dupe of this?

You can go on a rage for a huge bonus too.

@OrigamiRobot Oh god, not that question again

@GraceNote wait, answers used to count?

@GraceNote I thought the Final Fantasy one also was questions only... Let me go look.. swear this is the third one now that was for questions..

@fredley I just want it to die.
It's causing problems.

5:16 PM
@James FF13-2 was in the most recent grant.

@James Ask it as a question in its own right
@OrigamiRobot KILL IT WITH FIRE!

@BenBrocka Yes, we previously worked on both questions and answers. On less concrete metrics, however.

@BenBrocka Is there a way to not go on a destructive rampage?

@fredley It needed an actual reason to be closed. I found one.

@RavenDreamer Yes, you have to be careful.

5:18 PM
@RavenDreamer Not with the minotaur's obvious balance disorder

@GraceNote meta.gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/3866/… Yeah, questions only for that set of games too (I thought some of those were in their own giveaway which is why I thought there were 3 that were questions only).

The game is designed to be nearly impossible to avoid breaking things.

@James Nope, this is only the second one of this grant style.

@fredley Oh, ok.. one question coming up.

Man, I love Blurst/Flashbang. I really wish they'd continued Raptor Safari HD... =[

5:18 PM
@GraceNote I question the new trend then ;)

@OrigamiRobot well exactly

@GnomeSlice How do I pick things up?
Instead of punching them?

@James It may fare better to post it as its own question.

@RavenDreamer I don't remember the controls, been a while since I played it.
Check on the game page?
Arrow keys: Walk
WASD: Attacks
Space: Random attack

@James I'd like to see it require both questions and answers. With at least 2 upvotes each, or something. It's easy to crank out crap questions.

5:19 PM
Can you pick things up?

@GraceNote I'm just wondering if I'll get stuck that much. Is it still cool if there's a question I think people are wondering about and I answer myself (a-la standard SE policy on answering my own question?)

@Sterno I dont think it should require both, but I think both should be included ask/answer 8 questions with X number of votes or whatever.

@BenBrocka There is no objection to self-answering here.

Jetpack Brontosaurus is another awesomely impossible to play game.

@fredley Unfortunately, the previous closing mistake cleared the existing close votes. :(

5:20 PM
If I ask 2 good questions and answer 6 others I think that is a valid contribution to the content of the site for the game(s) in question.

@OrigamiRobot Ping some mods

K. What about specific story questions? I never played ME 1 or 2...

@BenBrocka Check what's already been asked on the subject first.

it appears there's leaked screenies of Doom 4 on 4chan?

Is there any time I'm not supposed to do that :P?

5:22 PM
The questions I asked as part of the KOA giveaway had very little to do with "being stuck"

@GnomeSlice Just walk close to it, I see.

@RavenDreamer Heh. What a great game. Be sure to check out some of their others.

@badp There is now a legitimate reason to close this

but you don't want to open 4chan for it

ME3 is going to have a ton of branching story/quest options. Every winner could probably ask 8 questions about those and not run out.

5:23 PM
@BenBrocka Well, we already have ME1/ME2 -> ME3 questions, hence why you searching now actually does anything for you.
If you searched for stuff that no one's had a chance to know even exists, well, by virtue of the aforementioned fact, it'd be quite fruitless.

@GraceNote @fredley @Sterno Question asked: meta.gaming.stackexchange.com/q/4059/8581

I take it nobody will be bothering to check out Crunch Time?

@GnomeSlice The funny part here is because I'm in summat of a crunch time right now is why I can't investigate, heh.

@GraceNote Not enough anime, too many boobs anyway, probably. =[
@GraceNote Also, get back to work.

@GnomeSlice Sorry man I actually need to get quite a bit of work done today :D

5:28 PM
@James Lol.
Yeah me too, just played it for about 10 mins a little while ago.

@GnomeSlice For the record, Kirby and Armored Core are two of my most played series.

@GraceNote I love kirby, never played any of the armored core games.

@GraceNote Armored Core is Awesome.
@GnomeSlice You are missing out man.

Isn't it an RTS?

No, it's a third-person mecha game

5:30 PM
Ah, third person shooters!?
x_x why have I never played those...

@GnomeSlice Nope, unless I am thinking of the wrong game, huge customizable robot combat :D

@GnomeSlice Point being - the artstyle of my avatars draws from this style, but it's not something that I particularly demand in a game.

I had a Mechwarrior game for PC a long time ago. I should find it and see if I can still run it.

Armored Core looked sweet but I never got it

Also, I enjoyed Robotech: Battlecry probably more than anyone else who played it.
Most people said it was pretty meh.

5:31 PM
@GnomeSlice Earth Siege was awesome, never played mechwarrior but it's similar.

@James There's technically every third-person mecha game falling in this categorization, haha, but I'm pretty sure you're thinking of the right game.

Armored Core is a mecha-based video game series developed by From Software for the PlayStation Portable, PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Mobile Phone platforms. Armored Core games are Mecha Simulation/third-person shooters, in which the player pilots a large mecha called an Armored Core, or AC for short. @GraceNote It has the missions you go out and do and also, if I recall, usually an arena ladder you can climb as part of the game play...

5:33 PM
It came with one of my computers, I think.
@James Yes, this matches a number of the AC games.
If I think about it, actually, I'm not at all sure how I came into possession of Star Siege.

Have any of you played the Robotech game?

I just kinda had the jewelcase on my computer desk is the earliest I can recall of it.

Robotech: Battlecry is a video game set in the Robotech universe, the first video game successfully released for the franchise. It was developed by Vicious Cycle Software and published by the now-defunct TDK Mediactive, in association with Harmony Gold USA. With a story focused on new characters created for the game and with guest appearances of main characters Rick Hunter, Roy Fokker, Lisa Hayes and a part of one in-game mission directly centered on Lynn Minmei, it somewhat follows the Robotech continuum. Closest thing I have is some mechwarrior lone wolves thing for original xbox, but the servers have all been shut down.

And I know of a couple others, but none that I can name off the top of my head.

Amusingly, the game is compatible with my xbox 360, but the 'try this upcoming game!' demos you can get to from the menu are not, so if you try to run one, it resets back to the dashbaord.

I haven't really been active anywhere but chat for a while

@fredley Is it a Snopes.SE type of site?

@James Basically. You get crazy good answers in general. Lots of research.
@James To pick a random example: skeptics.stackexchange.com/questions/3529/…

@James But why didn't you ask 6 more? Asking questions is mostly just a matter of putting in the time to think them up, especially with sufficiently complex games like ME3.

Quick question about the game giveaway - Do I have to send a PayPal receipt to be eligible for getting picked or do I send it only after being picked?

5:53 PM
@bwarner Because the game did not stump me so all I have are solutions that others could not get past.

@JohnoBoy If you get picked but don't send a PayPal receipt, then we don't reimburse you. Plain and simple. ♪

@bwarner Why would I think something that I find a simple solution for is worthy of being asked as a question?

Wait, there's another game grant on already?
Well balls, I definitely didn't make the required 8 questions about SCV.

ME3

@GnomeSlice Yah, but its for some no-name game.

5:54 PM
@GnomeSlice I think they do them every month now.

@GraceNote What I meant is - Do I need to send the receipt before being picked to be eligible for picking?

@GnomeSlice I was told, I think by @bwarner, that anyone can enter this one as well, but the people from last round just get an extra leg up.

@James So in an entire game you can't find 8 things that you find even remotely challenging?

@JohnoBoy No, because sometimes the game isn't even out yet.

@James Well, people that failed their commitment on the last round actually can't participate...

5:55 PM
@bwarner Let me go count up my Skyrim questions vs Skyrim answers and Ill let ya know.

@GraceNote Thanks, just needed clarification. It can be a receipt for a preorder, though...

(Since I have 6 questions to 86 answers overall something is going to tell me no but Ill count anyways)

@JohnoBoy Yes, but not everyone pre-orders. And not everyone preorders without knowing whether or not they'd get reimbursed.

@James if you have a data-related query, it's usually faster to ask me. I have mad toolz.
in this case I'm probably too late to help you, though

@GraceNote Of course. I mean, I intend to get ME3 eventually, not necessarily on launch, but the promotion is a great incentive to get it now.

5:57 PM
@agent86 I'm tempted to bring up yet another "The match was won before it even started" on you now.

I do wish answers counted to an extent, since I tend to answer more than I ask, but I don't find it a burden to ask questions.
@GraceNote am I still losing that one where I had the will of a housewife?

@agent86 Eternally.

If I hadn't been participating in the giveaway, I wouldn't have thought to ask some of the Final Fantasy 13-2 questions that I ended up asking. But that is the point, when you really try, you can usually find plenty of things to ask about.

@GraceNote you know, I'm married to a housewife, and I would not want to go up against her in a battle of wills. Just sayin'

@agent86 This just reinforces the part where you're losing, you realize.

5:59 PM
@GraceNote just out of curiosity, who was I losing to this time?

@agent86 @James, in the art of statisticking his Q/A rate for Skyrim, on the grounds that he had his results by the time he looked at the dataset without rigging up any tools or queries.

@bwarner In the first few days after the last promotion games were released, I could tell which users were asking Q's just to get the minimum requirement. I mean, some Q's were really general

And by asking them, I gave someone else a chance to create a great answer.

@GraceNote In the time of chimpanzees I was a monkey.

6:01 PM
@bwarner I have 4 skyrim questions, I have 18 skyrim answers.. I think the ratios for the other games I remark on often (minecraft and Terraria) have even more strange ratios since I only have 6 questions overall on G.SE

@bwarner You should totally put the lot of that in a meta answer, or as support to one of the existing meta answers. ♪

@JohnoBoy Sure, its kind of hard to require that people ask 8 good questions. Although ones that are bad enough to be closed I believe do not count.

@Wipqozn yeah, so does Mr. Atwood. You'd think he'd have some sort of residual pull (or pull, period, since this started while he was still the Big Man)

@James okay, you're free not to use it :)

seriously though, I've posted about 6 apps to stackapps, and at least 1,000 people have used them, and today's the first time anyone's reported any suspicion about the authorization screen

@IanPugsley See, I'm actually happy, because I don't play enough to farm level 5 runes of the specific types that I want. Now I don't have to worry about it.

@agent86 Probably because anyone who uses stackapps knows to expect a StackExchange authorization screen

@James badp did some good stats right after it ended

> Today we can announce that the four main developers of bukkit – a community-based Minecraft server implementation – have joined ranks with Mojang to bring you the same flexibility and versatility to the official Minecraft server. The four, Warren Loo (@evilseph), Erik Broes (@_grum), Nathan Adams (@dinnerbone) and Nathan Gilbert (@tahgtahv), will work on improving both the server and the client to offer better official support for larger servers and server modifications.

Crazy

@ThomasMcDonald Ugh, why does that actually make me sad...

@OrigamiRobot did the new minecraft update release yet?

Hmm.. Probably because I die a little every time I see the code behind minecraft ... :D

tl;dr The team behind Bukkit have been hired to work on Minecraft

I fear that people will actually think that is anything resembling good code design.

XenoxThe current ruler of my dynasty is a bit of an idiot. His heir shows much more promise; is there a way to get rid of my current ruler?

To be fair Bukkit have pretty much the whole shebang sorted out already

@GraceNote I've watched a let's play of the first few stages of BMD and the guy used 'criminy' a lot. I'm going to assume that's you until proved otherwise
while still using mostly female pronouns because of being used to that

@badp I've never done a Let's Play.

@ThomasMcDonald THe simple fact that in order to make a mod compatible with both SP and MP you have to write the mod Twice shows how bad the design of MC's code is.. The fact that damage resolution is resolved for fall damage before you even see What you are hitting... just annoyed the hell out of me to no end :D

@GraceNote weren't they called "talking pictures" back in your day?

> The plan is to build a fresh server API, and then extend it to support client-side modding (in one way or another).

@James, I've added some text to the landing page, if you click the link directly you'd still be taken to the app (and therefore the authorization page), but perhaps landing here instead would make you feel better: withoutthesarcasm.com/stackapps

@James I think there's going to be a lot of rewriting going on.

@IanPugsley An art thief is someone who takes pictures.

@agent86 Very awesome explanation of it all! Thanks man :)
@ThomasMcDonald Hehe, After looking at the code I saw why Notch gave up on a modding API :D

@GraceNote What is the difference between a duck?

@IanPugsley I don't know that one.

6:46 PM
@GraceNote the answers vary (the common one is "one leg is both the same")

Ahha

@IanPugsley That is the canonical answer, yes.

Is anyone else very very confused by @IanPugsley and @GraceNote's conversation?

@James @IanPugsley called @GraceNote old, then @GraceNote spoke of artistic kleptomaniacs and then @IanPugsley got all philosophical about a duck.
Simple.

6:48 PM
@IanPugsley Damnit!
@ArdaXi Yeah it was the whole Talking Pictures to Taking Pictures to a Duck that kind of made me.. well very confused...

@Tristan Not that I know of :(
@IanPugsley AND it bangs its head when it walks.

@OrigamiRobot too far

@agent86 " Your average rep percentage for these answers was 54.0%." 54% of what?

Q: Kinect for Ubuntu users

xralfAre there going to be games for Kinect device that run on Linux (Ubuntu)? Could you write here some information about playing such games on this platform, if there are some problems. If there is a community around making Kinect games for Ubuntu and place where can I find some more information.

@Grace YouTube have said we can put ads on our videos, could you get in touch with someone so we can sort a fund out or something. I don't really want to be handling our money.
