I'll just let the free games go to those who can actually play the game and help the site

If this supported multiplayer, I'd buy it for everyone.

Aren't you needing to stop spending money?

Wtf, why did that come out GREEN.

@GraceNote uh... Seth is using the old form where "buy it for me on Steam" is an option? for ME3?

He's using the plain form for when we had more than just "ME3" as an option.

4:01 PM
Yeah, I'm saying he might want to tweak it

Pointed out.

although I don't know how much that'll mess up the spreadsheet
(It shouldn't)

WTF
Why is that uploading in that colour...
Wow, even to imgur
There we go.

@GnomeSlice I see dead pixels
What colour is it supposed to be?

That last one. looks correct.
i.e. Yellow, Orange, Red.

4:08 PM
With glitchy right hand side?

@TZHX sorry man, I missed this. I only get pinged when you put an @ in front of my name (ie, @agent86)

@fredley ...What?

the whole comment thread was getting a bit out of control. I'll probably clean up most of what's there and not related to the question.

@fredley WHAT THE HELL. NO.

4:09 PM
@GnomeSlice Same
For reference, here's your first attempt:

@fredley norepro

@fredley wrong colours

@GnomeSlice Don't blame me! Blame this iMac if anything

@fredley That actually sounds really fair. Apple is to be blamed for most bad things even tangentially computer-related, in my experience.

4:11 PM
@fredley I'm not. That's how that one looks for me too...
I resaved it as a .png and now it appears correct to me when I upload it.

@GnomeSlice PNG is the solution to all of life's problems

@TZHX, emotions tend to run high on the internet, and LMGTFY is only going to cause friction. If you think it's a trivial question that doesn't show research, downvote it - that's specifically what the downvote button is for.

@badp that's how I see it too.
The 404 came out green and I deleted it.

@GnomeSlice thirded

4:14 PM
Wait, no I didn't.

um, so Origin doesn't support gifts?

Q: Do my blood vassal's kills count towards satisfying my vendettas?

SternoI recently accepted a blood vassal who has a ritual heavy build, which nicely complements my martial-heavy build. I want to know if his kills via Infernal Affliction rituals (or even normal combat, since I assume it would work the same in either case) will count towards the number of units I nee...

Q: Tag delection request: [buttons]

Dave McClellandThere are only two questions tagged with buttons: one question is actually asking about the function of a button, while the other is simply asking how to do something. The first question, while being relevant to the tag, could be covered simply enough with just the game tag. The second question...

tag delection?

@GnomeSlice that tag is delectable, obviously.

That's what I assumed.

4:15 PM
My life has too many Macs in at the moment. I'm on a Mountain Lion Mac, VNC'd into a Snow Leopard Mac so that I can build for a Tiger Mac.

@fredley More than 0 is too many.

@agent86 Mmmmm delicious tagging

The point of posting that image was to say I GOT THE SOUNDTRACK AND IT IS AWESOME.

@StrixVaria One is ok, for a handy 0-setup unix environment. 3 is way too many. Especially trying to develop for an operating system that came out in two thousand and fucking four!!

@fredley yo dawg, I herd you like OSX, so I put an OSX session in your OSX session so you can build another OSX session.

4:17 PM
@agent86 While you... OSX session?

@GnomeSlice indeed.

@fredley Any money given to Apple is money that is only going to further ruin people's perceptions of what computers are and should be.

You really don't like giving money to a lot of people...

@StrixVaria It is getting to the stage where it's impossible to do anything computationally without giving money to Apple in some way or other
@StrixVaria Especially given their recent Patent-troll behaviour

4:20 PM
@IanPugsley didn't we ban lmgtfy links on SE? Don't they just show up because they're automatically bit.ly'd?

@BenBrocka We did

I don't like how links are deemphasized in this site's styles...

@StrixVaria Like my perception that a computer should be a device that works and not a device that needs a wizard to maintain?

@GnomeSlice hey, looks almost like old gameboy colors!

@BenBrocka Is not s'posed to.

4:21 PM
@JasonBerkan Well exactly, your perception is wrong.

@JasonBerkan Other operating systems and hardware architectures don't need any kind of wizardry.

@fredley LOL. I'm used to that.

Apple's stuff doesn't "just work" any more than any other computer you can buy from a store.
They all do.

Are you a wizard

I am today.

4:22 PM
Everyday I'm wizarding

@JasonBerkan Apple makes computers easy to use by crippling them. Simple as that. The tactics they use also ensure you need to buy a new one every couple of years, and lock-in means it needs to be another Apple. This is why they are the richest company in the world.
@BenBrocka They see me wizardin', they hatin'

@StrixVaria I'll agree with Windows 7, but prior to that reinstalling Windows was a yearly event around my house.

@JasonBerkan That seems unnecessary and silly.

@StrixVaria Wait til' you see Windows 8

@fredley I disagree with one of your points - in my experience, apple computers tend to have a longer lifecycle because they become outdated (compared to other apple computers) much more slowly

4:24 PM
The problem is UX, only recently has MS (and even other companies) started to pay attention to making a good UX. Apple has in part used brutal software/hardware/functionality limits to improve UX (by preventing you from making errors/stupid choices) but it's not an apple exclusive thing nor does it require limited equipment

@DaveMcClelland Ah yes, but did the PC buyers spend the same amount of money on their machines? Of course a $200 PC is going to age faster than a $2000 Mac.
@BenBrocka Apple's UX is becoming more and more fucked up though. The trackpad is the bane of my life.

I can't even figure out how to use Mac OS.

Also Apple has all these "shortcuts" that you pretty much need a guidebook to use.

@StrixVaria ^ this

I had to use it recently for something, and I had to ask how to do simple things like scrolling down a page.

4:25 PM
I'm not an apple fan so I don't really know how their trackpads work

@fredley I bought a first-gen MBP my first year of college (2006) and it's still a pretty decent machine. It's certainly aged, but a top of the line windows laptop from the same timeframe would be almost unusable today

@StrixVaria It was required because the computers would become non-operational over time. Honestly - I am a wizard and I was just sick of the amount of support time I was spending on my wife's computer. I've done absolutely nothing since I bought her an iMac.

@DaveMcClelland Really? My laptop's that old, still going strong, cost roughly 2/3rds of a MBA I think

@JasonBerkan that problem is in part because of what win XP/earlier would let random programs do to your OS, it didn't sandbox programs worth a damn

@BenBrocka Agreed. Bad third party software was Windows biggest issue.

4:27 PM
Also the windows registry is a horrific nightmare, which is why I love web apps

user30
tom.is \o/

@ThomasMcDonald Available?

user30
That will do me fine

@JasonBerkan Agreed. Macs are the easiest thing to give people, they will probably be able to use them without too much fuss. However the effect this is having on developers and programmers is overwhelmingly negative

@fredley Maybe not unusable, but it's almost certainly a more noticeable aging process

user30
4:27 PM
@GnomeSlice In my possession

@DaveMcClelland In what way?

good afternoon guys

@ThomasMcDonald Nice.

@Moonlighter Unless you want to participate in a Mac/PC flamewar I suggest you go somewhere else for a bit

LOL, ok

user30
4:29 PM
Apple bashing is becoming a recurring theme

@ThomasMcDonald That doesn't sound good.

@fredley From what I noticed, windows applications tend to increase their minimum requirements much faster than mac applications. As such, you get to the point of not being able to run certain things much faster on a windows machine than a mac. That was just my experience, though

@fredley Because it's hard to program on an Apple? I'm a Windows developer, and I don't have any experience with Apple other than as a consumer.

I'm hardly a proponent of Windows. I happen to use Windows simply because it's the operating system I'm most familiar with. I just hate Apple, their company, their policies, their products, their employees, their users, their everything.

I thought there was a thing where I think it was @Arda who called you a hipster, but past that, didn't think it was something scaling to bad.

4:29 PM
u guise r dumb, Commodore 64 is obviously the superior computing platform

@JasonBerkan and Window's failure to protect itself...

Yeah, I'm not as impressed with Apple as I used to be.

@IanPugsley and where I learned to program.

@DaveMcClelland Sticking with old versions is much easier though as you don't have the app store forcing updates down your throat the whole time. PS CS4 still runs fine.

user30
@GraceNote I dunno, I've noticed in here a couple of times recently, but then the search isn't finding it for me.

Q: Where can I find the npc to buy add armor for my horse?

tylerI think I'm supposed to talk to someone in the castles of the holds but none of the ones I've went to said anything about it? What city should I try and the name of the person I need to talk to would be great

@ThomasMcDonald I trust you enough that I'll keep an eye on it.

This is causing more problems than it's worth.

@fredley True enough, I suppose.

@JasonBerkan If you're developing on a year-old version of OSX, only for OSX, I'm sure it's a dream. However I work in a cross-platform shop and an inordinate amount of time is spent making Apple work the same as other platforms, and getting round the limitations of their API.

woohoo, I somehow have 300 rep

4:31 PM
Around here the motto is "Apple: It just works. Or it just doesn't"

user30
@GraceNote Maybe I'm placing two rather separate events much closer together in terms of time.

I'm going to drop out of this discussion at this point - the mac/pc argument has been played out and I regret getting sucked into it.

@fredley I have been vastly more frustrated by my iPad than my computer lately. That's appple's services fault though, not the OS stability or anything

Use the computer you want, use the operating system you want, and don't berate others for their choices

Cannot connect to iTunes

4:32 PM
@fredley Bad APIs suck. I never want to go back to MFC. .NET is a dream.

@ThomasMcDonald Entirely possible, but just because I'm keeping an eye on things doesn't mean I'm suddenly going to go super-strict. Just observe to see whether it is an issue developing.

@StrixVaria +100. I used it for 5 minutes to show a presentation on the teacher's mac once and I got every single piece of UI and shortcuts I tried to use wrong

user30
disappears back into Udacity

@fredley Where's the flamewar? I see no flamin' round here.

@JasonBerkan The thing about the Mac API is there's no way to 'go deeper'. If it doesn't work you're stuck. On other platforms you just implement at a lower level.
@badp Fine, some kind of less hot, more genteel war.

4:35 PM
@fredley Yeah that's icky. I've developed with closed systems like that before and it's never fun.

@JasonBerkan Especially when you're developing an app that has to work identically across platforms. It's a bloody nightmare.

Also I see no berating or bashing. A gamer community being mostly Windows-focused should be hardly any surprise.

@badp It isn't. In fact both of my Macs dual boot into Windows for games.

And all of my computers have both Ubuntu and Windows.
the wine is a lie the wine is a lie the wine is a lie the wine is a lie

I'm now fantasizing about a giant meteor coming towards Earth, shattering into a hundred pieces, and having each piece hit either an Apple- or EA-owned building and crushing it to dust.

4:39 PM
@StrixVaria Now, hatred for EA - I can agree with you on that.

user30
You should probably get help for that

@badp It'll run NP++, that's good enough for me

@fredley Wine is good at running things just barely enough to claim that yes, they do run

Back to games - the original Mass Effect is not available for the PS3, correct?

@badp NP++ works well, never had any problems

4:42 PM
It's not as much a matter of problems as it is a matter of speed
Like Steam, TF2, all the things I do want wine for - they do run, but just barely. Very slowly, very buggy, no sound... but it kinda works!

@badp For text editing it's fine
@badp Ah, TF2 not such a good idea

What's our policy on spoilers? Asking a Q about the final boss (who's a surprise) It's for a small indie game that's not plot based so I don't know if we'd care or what

@BenBrocka The title must be clear and googleable before it must be spoiler-free

@BenBrocka Depending on the nature, try not to reveal things so obviously.

The main point of questions and answers shouldn't be protected by a spoiler tag.

4:44 PM
how does the english language not have a word for "grief bacon"

Well people are going to search "how do I beat Kreutzer" (the bosses' name), so I should ignore spoilers, right?

this is like... obvious people. Get on this.

Can't we just say Kummerspeck?

#9 - Gorging

After all the English word for Schadenfreude is Schadenfreude

4:46 PM
@BenBrocka If it's a big reveal about the boss's name, you might consider just naming which stage the boss is on.

People keep saying my name.
I'm here, I'm hear, already.

#7 Nerd

@GraceNote If it's a big reveal then just writing the boss name won't actually reveal anything.

@GraceNote do you think the Gundemonium boss reveals are important?

For example, at what point does GLADOS reveal her name during Portal?

4:47 PM
#6 Idiocy and/or Political

IIRC it's quite towards the end.

@badp If a boss's name happens to match, say, someone who's been working on your side the entire time, that's a big reveal.

In this case it does...knowing the name and that you fight he is significant

If it's just a name you never knew until then, then it's not a big reveal.

@GraceNote ah
then you can just say "final boss"
which is more easily googleable too

4:48 PM
Exactly.

I'm not sure how many people search for "true final boss of X" rather than the name of the boss in this case
People don't know True Final Boss like they do Final Boss

Yeah, more people know Hibachi as Hibachi, as an example, but everyone knows Hibachi is always the True Final Boss.

@agent86 Haha, I am done... Dont feel like going to page two and the last word on the first page coming from a culture of people who have 40 words for 'onset of cannibalism' is a good stopping point :)

I think you can take a judgment call, @BenBrocka, on this one. If you think the benefits of having the name outright will outweigh the potential harm, go through with it.

Hooray for game grants

4:50 PM
My main worry is to not (to make an example of a game I do know about) start talking about "end of chamber 20" or whatever other original periphrasis to talk about the glados fight

user30
I got various aspects of the plot of DE:HR spoiled multiple times through titles

@BenBrocka Get rid of the word True and I think the rest of that could be often searched for.

user30
So I stopped trying to answer questions on that tag

If I leave "How do I beat BOSS NAME" and Boss name is in spoilers, Google still finds that text with the boss name in text anyway, right? It's just not AS good SEO
And...how do I use spoilers

@BenBrocka You can't use spoilers in titles.

4:51 PM
>! is the spoiler mark

@GraceNote Policy is to edit to remove?

@fredley No, I meant the formatting.

@GraceNote I meant in the body text

@GraceNote Yeah my request for inline spoilers got smushed into nothingness cause of how assernine people over at TVTropes are in using them.

If you put it in the question text, it's still Google-able (these 60 day reviews have proven that quite strongly), but not as much as the title. It's still enough to be discoverable.

4:52 PM
Bleh, it's only for block quotes too I see

Spoiler text to Google is just a quote block.

My word this quesiton has a lot of down votes:

Q: Where can I find the npc to buy add armor for my horse?

tylerI think I'm supposed to talk to someone in the castles of the holds but none of the ones I've went to said anything about it? What city should I try and the name of the person I need to talk to would be great

@James Yeah, but in a general sense, if there's a True Final Boss, it's a distinct fight from the Final Boss, so strategies for the Final Boss don't match those for the True Final Boss.
@badp This is an understandable concern - one should gear around what makes it discoverable in addition to care taken for other aspects. I don't think going by the chamber number just to represent that boss fight would be very good for discoverability.

Yeah it's a bullet hell game, so 90% of people never even reach the TFB

@GraceNote If there is a True final boss than that just implies it really is the Final boss and the other one is a fake sub-boss, not the Final boss. Just because the storyline wants to pass it off as the final boss half the time doesnt make it really the final boss
Its like the running joke in Final Fantasy games at this point in time, the boss is never really the boss until you have to kill him 6 times :)

4:55 PM
@James It's a final boss in the sense it's the last boss you need to clear for a standard ending, typically in the final stage. To take DoDonPachi as an example, you only face the True Final Boss after a second and harder pass through the stages after acquiring insane requirements on your first pass.

In this case the Final Boss CAN be the last boss you fight, they do end the game if you haven't met other conditions

@GraceNote Really? talk about a lame way to give false replay...

It's different from a fake final boss that doesn't actually end the game
@James It's common in bullet hell games and I really don't care for it. The TFBs always turn out to be way more of a pain than everything else

@BenBrocka I honestly just dont see people using the word True no matter what you do. Replay or second pass or some such...
Something more common in the language as opposed to wordings that can lead to debates like this one :)

Actually, in the STG community, these typically are referred to as True Final Bosses. Even in the soundtracks, too.

4:58 PM
@GraceNote Oddness :)

STG?
shoot-em-up is really the preferred tag over shmup?

@BenBrocka STGs, shoot-em-ups, and shmups are all ways to refer to the same thing.

never heard stg

Finally, a match-three game I can get into.
@BenBrocka Me neither.

4:59 PM
Boobs! Also a puzzle

I was not aware that fulfilling my commitment in the previous game grant would automatically get me ME3 in this one. I figured it just meant I didn't become ineligible for a random chance. This is awesome. +1 Gaming.SE

Probably aren't big on the STG scene, then, haha. ♪

All boobs aside, it's pretty much your standard match-three game, but it's actually pretty neat, because the two characters go through a story as you play.
