@tombull89 no

@cole Dat RAM freed!

ideally you should have 2-3x your monthly salary as a debit buffer

@NathanC but..but I had things I was looking at :(

In speaking of which, one of the chrome tabs is up to 2 GB used...

I've never been there though - lousy with money

Dan

@pauska I'm trying to get to that point.

CHROME, Y U SO RAM HUNGRY?

@DennisKaarsemaker I'm curious, do you get any decent sysadmin candidates for the roles you have advertised on the sidebar ?

Apparently the UniFi controller has a memory leak...

Dan
Nor me really, but as it happens I have nearly 10x the amount of my salary and nearly double that in money that I absolutely must have or else. It was meant to be a house deposit, but now it's a warchest while I go consulting.

Either way, would you really just keep it in your current account

2:02 PM
I left the tab open and after a few days it was eating ~2 GB of RAM

@Iain we get both decent and crap candidates for the role, whether they come via the ad I don't know, I don't actually think we track that.

@NathanC nom nom nom

hmm interesting

@DennisKaarsemaker Do you normally get a mix of both?

@ScottPack yes
especially for the singapore positions

2:03 PM
@cole After budgeting bills and so forth, I have less than $100/week to live on >.> yay bills

:(

this quarterly payment for one of my student loans throws things out of whack

Dan
@NathanC It depends on your definition, $100/week of play money if you're including things like food and so on (I.e., ALL of your expenses) isn't so bad

@DennisKaarsemaker if you don't track where they come from how can you tell if your spending your $ correctly - I'm guessing you don't care

@Iain I'm afraid that "we don't care" may be correct there
ads on SF are too cheap to care about

2:04 PM
@Dan Excludes food/fuel/misc living expenses

(don't tell SE staff that!)

Dan
@NathanC Oh, less than ideal then :(

@DennisKaarsemaker which (I guess) is just as well really

recruitment agencies are expensive, ads are cheap

My federal loans will start coming in soon too...I have to refile the income-based repayment and I estimated another $120/month coming out

2:06 PM
we have a €2500 bonus internally for internal referals that get hired
which is still cheap
which is also why I keep prodding people here, it may be cheap for booking, but €2500 buys me a lot of scotch :)

:)

urgh, we just had a bad all-hands meeting. That's it, I need to find a new job

@faker come to amsterdam to work for me :)

@faker: :/
blah, if my results would come out, I can start job searching in earnest.

2:08 PM
@DennisKaarsemaker heh that isn't too far away, but I'll take my chances here first

@faker meet @DennisKaarsemaker (@DennisKaarsemaker that'll be €100 tyvm ) ;)

@Iain tell you what: if @faker joins us through an internal referal so I get the bonus, the bonus will be converted to scotch for as many regulars as I can afford :)

2:11 PM
@DennisKaarsemaker I doubt it, job market here (==Munich) is pretty good and I have an exceptional short notice period

@faker: if they let you go, wouldn't/shouldn't it be waived?

@DennisKaarsemaker :)

@JourneymanGeek no way. I learned today that my boss (the only one who also does work on production systems) is going on a 6 month parental leave. They can't afford letting me go any day sooner than legally allowed

@faker: ouch

@JourneymanGeek The amount of "how is network formed" on SU is too damn high :P

2:14 PM
@faker oh man

and also on my last job (3 month notice period) I didn't get out earlier. Lots and lots of documentation to be written

@NathanC: well, different audience. Also, we just tend to kill em off quietly where we can ;p
@faker: heh
I'm STILL not sure what I need to document here before I leave ;p

@JourneymanGeek I almost rep-capped yesterday from answering like 3 questions...I'd be lucky to get a +10 on SF.

@NathanC: SF is a MUCH tougher crowd ;p
I once recapped high as a kite on cold meds.

@DennisKaarsemaker This is pretty much just mine fully filled out, I can't be bothered to form it into a template.

2:16 PM
@JourneymanGeek My "Unsung Hero" badge here shows this lol

@DennisKaarsemaker Woudl you let him remote in?

@NathanC heh, I rep-capped on codegolf and security in the same day. One answer on each....

@NathanC: I have one here

@NathanC I guess that that's because the number of people on SF who pay on 'our' side is tiny compared to the number who ask questions and largely the people ho ask questions don't care past getting their question answerd

and close to 60K on SU

2:17 PM
@ScottPack no.

@DennisKaarsemaker Lame

@DennisKaarsemaker I'm not a big friend of doing remote operations anyway (meaning a split up ops team)

Q: how to add a dsquery script to excel

JJJJNRI have to update ad with home users number etc I've written the script and imported the usernames and phone numbers into excel Script : dsquery user -samid "username" "OU=Sys,OU=Prod Services,DC=win,DC=ite,DC=com" | dsmod user -mobile "999" -hometel -u XXXXXX -p XXXXXXXXX I've set excel form...

A batch file? da faq

dsquery.. how long has powershell been around?

@ScottPack that's a lot more like 'normal' TeX than mine. I cheat and used moderncv

2:20 PM
I used dsquery once. It was awful.

your thesis title is too wide though, overfull hbox :)

AD cried out in agony and I'm pretty sure a baby or two died

Early morning PowerShell boner.

@DennisKaarsemaker I had used different stys in the past. I got tired of keeping them working as I migrated systems.
Particularly on OSX.

Dan
@NathanC I was using dsquery up until the last year or so cos I had a great big fuck off spreadsheet for importing accounts

2:22 PM
@Dan I think I used it a couple times for diagnosing screwy AD issues, but not to manipulate data

Dan
I'm actually thinking of dsadd, I think

Sounds like an Intern task

Dan
@cole Who? :D

@Dan the question I linked

Dan
Sorry, I thought you meant me adding users. Which, you kind of did indirectly :D

2:25 PM
@Dan depends on the environment - I've had to add users in previous environments - our help desk takes care of that now
OMG NOTES WTF

Dan
@cole It's normally when I'm building new environments, don't really touch it otherwise

one of the first things I did here was fix all our user creation crap
it was a disaster

@cole I have a feeling "Lotus Notes: Terror in the IT Department" will become frequent

@ScottPack @DennisKaarsemaker with cpan2rmp is it possible (and if so how) to change the path prefix - the equivalent of perl Makefile.PL PREFIX=/usr/local/ ...

@NathanC Just sucks our ticketing system is a Notes application.

2:30 PM
@Iain I use cpanspec instead of cpan2rpm

@DennisKaarsemaker was a punt based on the conversation yesterday

I use vim

but neither cares iirc, it takes the PREFIX from the perl you use to build the package (which in my case lives in /usr/local)

Typically when I need a module from cpan it's either in EPEL, which I can mirror with cobbler, or there's a SuSE rpm that I can tweak the spec from.

we compile our own perl into /usr/local, so distro packages won't work
and cpanspec with our customizations does a decent job
and to answer your question: no, cpanspec can't. But it's a relatively simple perl script, it's easy to hardcode a PREFIX into all generated specfiles and not too hard to make it an option. If you actually care about this, I'll even do that for you :)

2:34 PM
Wtf Windows!? All of a sudden it was like "LOLRESTART"

@cole Yay updates!

@DennisKaarsemaker Thanks - just having a quick play now

@NathanC it was Symantec

MotherFUCKER it's cold outside
I could literally feel ice crystals forming in my throat if I breathed too fast

It's like "YOU INSTALLED NMAP NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!"
Symantec must think I'm an 1337 h@x0r
brb rebooting because Symantec is a cuntship

2:37 PM
Oh dear...
Sysaid agent crash-looping and causing high load on our WSUS box
That awkward moment when our monitoring software is the problem

ok reboot complete.

@MikeyB I always like it when I can feel frost on my moustache.

I don't think there's enough watson .exe's

A: how to add a dsquery script to excel

DanOkay, this is definitely in the quick and dirty school of IT Engineering but we've all done it and, actually, Excel is mega handy for this. I do agree with @Pauska that Powershell and CSV's are the way forwards, though. Anyway, the quickest and easiest way to do this (For a one off job, anyway) ...

MOAR WATSONS!

Dan
2:40 PM
Dirty solutions!

157, to be exact
I do love some taskkill
Might as well toss some more RAM its way too
Oh wait, I can't hotplug with ESXi essentials!

@Chopper3 The first ever CaH card I ever won was over the holidays: my mother's black card "During sex, I think about ___". I answered "Horse meat".

:)

@MikeyB my wife played her first game of CAH the other day. "What is there a ton of in heaven?" "Necrophilia"

Fucking hate this application.

2:46 PM
@DennisKaarsemaker I took one picture for posterity from the game: t.co/VJQWXyXyWT

@cole Sysaid hates me too

@DennisKaarsemaker I used @ScottPack's advice (vim) to just edit the .spec file

@cole "69 test methods", baby!

@MikeyB nice :)
@Iain that works for a one off

@MikeyB it's so bad

2:48 PM
@cole but it's advanced!

I think I should upgrade our WSUS box off of 2003...

@Iain It's not exactly elegant, but for my purposes sufficient.

@DennisKaarsemaker I know - it's proof of concept now I need to 'fix' it

Can't remember wtf port the RCC uses to connect to this bitch

@cole 6969?
:)

2:50 PM
> Invalid option '--build=x86_64-redhat-linux-gnu'. Try ./configure --help to see available options.
The rage of a thousand suns.

@ScottPack s/_/-/ ?

This is using the same goddamn mock chroot that's worked for me for years.

@TomO'Connor sadly no

does anyone else who uses IPv6 (possibly via a he.net tunnel) have problems with assests from cdn.sstatic.net on stackexchange sites ?

@Iain not since I complained about it.

2:53 PM
I'm still waiting for networks that I use to support v6 before trying to use it on the Internets

@MikeyB who did you complain to ? I keep getting random hangs waiting for stuff

@Iain how does testipv6.com look for you? No MTU issues?

@Iain nope.

Q: Problems with CDN DNS

MikeyBI've been having trouble getting to cdn.sstatic.net all day. It's been crippling not to be able to play Stack Exchange! Chrome's resource panel was showing 'host not found' for cdn.sstatic.net. I think I've tracked it down to this: I have IPv6 connectivity and my machine is querying for AAAA r...

@MikeyB that's fine as is facebook/google etc - it only ever seems to be SE and their CDN

2:56 PM
@Iain Use it all the time, no problem.

@MikeyB generally so do I

@Iain any particularly big file to test with? from cdn.sstatic.net?

@MikeyB it's only when I try to play SE and it will be fine for hours then break

Dan
@DennisKaarsemaker Admit it, you love the Excel-age :D

2:58 PM
@NathanC Ha!
Keygen @NathanC
