You never upgrade 2003 to 2008? or 2008R2 to 2012? etc.

Windows 2000 is stable as shit.
And no, I haven't done 2012 yet

@ewwhite And how many hackers call it their home away from home?

I'm good at extracting rootkits
mental floss

Fuck that, I'd rather just not get the rootkit in the first place.

I s'pose.

12:05 AM
5-6 was a pretty uncomfortable upgrade path.

I'm getting old now. No time for Red Hat and VMware's silliness

So many differences, from boot to memory management, event management and application versions were horribly out of date.

6-7 will be worse...I wouldn't even attempt a 6-7 upgrade.

Yeah, apparently they are going to support it.. hmm, dont think i'll try that though.

Let them support it...

@MichaelHampton any recommendations for movies?

@PatoSáinz Backdoor Sluts IX

@MarkHenderson preferrably not porn

@PatoSáinz Well, shit

Anonymous
@MarkHenderson you don't know any movie that's not porn?

@PatoSáinz Haha I know plenty
But I haven't seen any movies in a while

12:31 AM
oh ok

@MarkHenderson That's nasty.

@ewwhite any reommendations?

12:54 AM
guys, do you have any experience with hdds?
I need a safe way to store 4TB
And I am thinking of getting 2 x 4TB and using them in RAID 1
Now, I think wd is better than the rest, and I am a not sure: should I get RED, SE or RE? RE is too expensive. RED I believe is like a green with different firmware (and I have 2 green giving me errors here)... Is SE any good?

Anonymous
@Luka store 4TB forever or store 4tb with daily use?

store 4tb (backups mainly with movies and music)
I just want to store the data and I won't access them much. Any access will be read. Writes will be pretty rare.

Anonymous
alright

yawn

@ewwhite at the end of the week I'm buying the Canon EOS Rebel T3

Oh good.

@mossy that means snowy?

all in all, what's best for me: SE vs RE?

@Luka For your nice home server, black, RE or red should be fine. Wouldn't do blue or green.

Q: Hardware Acceleration for MD RAID?

PaulIs it possible, or feasible, or even sensible to consider hardware acceleration for MD RAID? I am referring more here to RAID6 type levels where there is a computation overhead. My thinking is that it is still disks that will provide the greater bottleneck, but I am surmising. As has been poin...

Why does vmware always default num-lock to off on virtual machines? That's the opposite to every "real" computer, basically since num-lock was invented
When you're using the console from a laptop its incredibly frustrating having a NUMLOCK ON/OFF notification every time you mouse in/out of a vm

@ewwhite and in other news, the next lumia looks like a nokia 3310?

I think 2014 is the year of the grouch...
@Solignis Again, the LSI controller and ZFS offers you no benefit for your use case. You won't have write caching, which is BAD for virtualization. You'll need to use software RAID to boot the system and likely dedicate physical disks for booting. It's really not worth it. You could run ZFS atop your hardware RAID, using a single device, but you'd really need to have a specific reason for needing ZFS. See this question: serverfault.com/questions/545252/…ewwhite 5 mins ago
I'm telling people NOT to use ZFS.
and that's very unlike me

2:47 AM
@PatoSáinz I have one still running ;p

Whatever happened to MacGyver?

He took over SGC

@MichaelHampton Yeah, that's over

A: What information should I include or obfuscate in my posts?

Michael HamptonProvide as much information as necessary to answer the question. Obfuscate anything that may be sensitive, but be careful of obfuscating too much. These may occasionally come into conflict... Passwords Never post passwords, API keys, or any other credential that can be used for authentication...

I think I covered all the major points...

@MichaelHampton the passwords section, i'd add "change them immediatelly, always assume they've been read"

8:19 AM
G'day

Morning @Iain
how are you?

I'm good. Waiting for openreach to come fix my telephone line - hopefully the weather won't put them off.

And you ?

Not bad, first day the staff and students are back at the college and as we're short of staff, I'm covering the helpdesk.
Forgotten passwords. Forgotten passwords everywhere

:(

The other sysadmin/engineer that works for me in the infrastructure team kinda things that doing helpdesk is beneath us somehow.
The way I see it is, if the college wants to pay me sysadmin wages to do front line helpdesk jobs then its money for old rope...

8:26 AM
but only for so long it gets wearing after a while

yeah. I'll only be taking calls for an hour and a half or so today
and maybe doing a few "first line" deskside calls

Dan
Morning

morning @dan
ok scratch my previous optimism. I've had my idiot boss out here doing his thin-lipped sighing act because he doesn't like the answer I gave him to a question he shouldn't have needed to ask if he had any clue what we're fucking doing.

:(

yeah. I'm used to it but it still takes the shine off the day

8:33 AM
so early too

he can't help it. Blaming him for being a jerk is like blaming a dog for peeing against a lampost: it's just being a dog.

I guess we all know people like that

yup. After spending so much time moaning about him here though, I need to do something about it. I've got some blood tests that need to be sorted out first but once I get those sorted its time to start seriously looking for a better job.

dogs are probably easier to train ;p

true enough

8:43 AM
morning all

morning @DennisKaarsemaker

first day of work in 2014, so far I have not yet felt the need to kill anyone
but the day is still young :)

The line fault is not in my house - could have told them that

yeah but they like to make you wait while they figure it out themselves, badly

Dan
8:48 AM
@Iain This type of stuff is my one major reservation about switching from VM to BT

apparently it's 153m from the house and as the cable takes a very circuitous route to me then that's within the, margin of error from the other end for being inside my house
@Dan don't openrreach manage the cables for everyone ?

Dan
@Iain VM is all their own fibre

ah cool
we'll be on infinity by the end of March

Dan
I'll be on it by Thursday! It best be good

@Dan they're currently predicting 80 meg here but we'll see.

Dan
8:55 AM
@Iain Think mine is about that - to be honest, I have 120Mb at the moment, but my Wifi can't see that kind of bandwidth and I'm happy so long as I can sit on it all day
The only reason I went for 120Mb with Virgin is because it's the only package that doesn't cripple you after [x]mb per hour

We've had problems with the line here for years, whenever the weather turns cold and wet the line gets noisy but it usually clears this time it's been bad for about 8 days and off since the 2/1

Dan
:(

I've burned through most of my mobile data allowance now though
good job I'm switching to giffgaff when the sim cards arrive

Dan
@Iain Unlimited data is the single reason I'm with 3
I've absolutely slaughtered it some months before now because, often, my HSDPA is quicker than hotel wireless

not good

9:10 AM
one of our daughter companies are requesting that we install iTunes on all their laptops
"to manage our iPhones"

Actually, I was surprised how good three's 3G is after switching from O2... Outside of O2 the 3g was something that I gritted my teeth and made do with, but Three's 3g signal is absolutely fine, pleasure to use.
@pauska :-(

Dan
@RobM They've really improved over the last few years

happy new year mofos!

Dan
@Chopper3 Morning

@Dan did I miss anything interesting?

Dan
9:18 AM
@Chopper3 On the Comms room, I don't think so. I do now have a Ltd company, but I'm not sure it falls into "interesting" ;)

And to you @Chopper3 how was your break?

@Dan yay!

@dan yeah I'm certainly glad I switched from O2

@RobM not as good as I'd hoped - Paris was wet and full of rude, smoking, Frenchies - then the weather was terrible in Martha's Vineyard, as was my head-cold, still full of it now

Dan
@RobM O2 really upset me when they talked me into hanging on for 2 months for their late launch of the HTC Desire only to offer me a worse deal than 3, despite being a customer for well over 6 or 7 years

9:20 AM
@Chopper3 worse. its full of Parisians

@Chopper3 I'm sorry to hear it :-(
Paris full of Frenchies eh? That's just sneaky of them...

@RobM did manage to get a PS4 the other day though, which I'm properly impressed by, for a version 1.0/1.0.1 thing it's seriously fast/stable/sorted - really very impressed

@dan I think O2 were ahead of their rivals at one point then just sat on their asses while their rivals got better
that's cool @Chopper3, I think I'd get a PS4 before a xbone

@RobM they're just rude, they don't queue at all and they all still think it's cool to smoke, I'm sure that's what started my sore throat

Dan
@Chopper3 Jealous - can't justify Next Gen this side of unemployment. Mind you, I played my XBox 360 for the first time in > month yesterday

9:22 AM
@RobM they're tiny too, very easy to swap out in place of my PS3, I was done and dusted in about 7 minutes all in

cool... the PS4 I mean, not the smoking sore throat thing

@Dan there's not much in the way of games, just fancied a belated xmas present, didn't really get anything as we were trying to travel light

yeah I'm converting from xbox to ps

@dan I only ever used the xbox to play soccer games with my mates and the occasional racing game, then I got GTA5

I don't see the point in paying $100 more for a gaming console

9:24 AM
@pauska you'll have to let me know your account name thing - mine's "Phil BM" (with the space)

@pauska especially when the extra money for the xbox one is being spent on the kinnect... something I don't like on the xbox 360 and therefore don't want on the xbone

Dan
@RobM I finished GTA V and the online stuff doesn't really appeal. Great game though

@pauska I just didn't want something THAT big in my lounge, or the always-on camera

Dan
I quite fancy the Xbox360 but the fact it doesn't run old games is a bit of a bummer for me

@Dan neither does the PS4 btw

Dan
9:26 AM
@Chopper3 Oh, someone told me it did

@dan I just played the GTA storyline... I don't like online multiplayer gaming myself, if I want to listen to a bunch of barely literate teenagers call me a wanker, I'll just go to work.

Yeah, kinect gives me nothing.. don't want no voice commands either

Dan
@RobM I like some online stuff, but yeah

I want a regular gaming console to play fifa
@Chopper3 I will once I buy one

Dan
@pauska I got the Kinect with my originak XBox and can honestly say it's pointless. All it does is sit there, gather dust and occasionally decide that a random word said during a conversation is an invitation to join in

9:28 AM
@Dan it's probably mega fun for the kids, but I don't have any
dance star and whatever

Dan
@pauska Actually, yeah - we did spend a drunk New Years (a few years back) with one of the dancing games
It's all very gimmicky, though

the share stuff on the PS4 is done very nicely I thought

The kinnect got unplugged after it complained about me swearing at the opposition in fifa...

:)

9:38 AM
Me? Swear? :)

I mean, if a man cannot fucking swear at his TV....
what kinda world is that?

indeed

oh god, first conf call of the year in 15 mins, don't know if I can...

@Chopper3 sabotage the conf system

and my line is back working (ish) it's down at a whopping 0.27Mbs - now to do battle wit BT in India to age my BRAS profile reset

9:49 AM
@Iain if I could help I would but I have zero sway with those people myself

@Chopper3 cheers - the hub just reset the line and I'm back 5.5Mbps down and 0.3Mbps up so I guess I don't need to wade through that - I can just wait till infinity rolls out now

the HUB?

BT home hub

that's what BT call it, IIRC, @pauska

Dan
Hub as in the normal English usage, rather than the computing usage really

10:33 AM
@Iain Which, incidentally, doesn't support RIP :(
Has anyone tried SR-IOV with graphics cards on VMWare ESXi 5.1 to provide gpu acceleration inside the VM?

@TomO'Connor yes, but a) with a Tesla not a GPU as such and b) for CUDA not OpenGL/DirectX - it was 'ok' but we never pursued it

In first thing this morning after the Christmas break - file server derped out and wouldn't let anyone map their network drives \o/

Dan
@TomO'Connor You were hoping!

the difference between a 8mbit (4x2) SDSL and 10mbps fiber is day and night

10:53 AM
@Chopper3 Interesting. I'll find out if they want CUDA or OGL.

So there's plans in the works to chuck out Meru and replace it with Ruckus, chuck out Smoothwall and the ASA and replace it with Barracuda, and replace the C7000 with Dell rackmount servers.
I know the blades in the C7000 won't get anything newer than ESX 5.1 but...eep.

Dan
The first one just seems pointless, the second I suppose is a matter of opinion but the third appears to be a downgrade

@tombull89 why...? on pretty much all that. I mean does someone think something magical will happen if they spend all that money or what?

Dan
You have the C7000 - why not just buy new blades if they want to upgrade

uh trust me, the second is also a downgrade

10:57 AM
I've been happy with chucking out bloxx and going to sonicwall, btw.

@Dan dunno. Just...dunno.

still would have liked to have compared to palo alto too, but hey.
Those are all sideways moves at best.

Dan
Can I have the old Chassis and Blades if they're so shit?

@pauska That's what we've heard too. Told people we're going from Meru to Ruckus and the reaction is pretty much "you're doing what?!"

@tombull89 I was referencing the ASA
but yes, Meru is also good gear

10:59 AM
I just don't understand that. Does the sales person for all this have blackmail photos of your head and all the governors or something?

Dan
@tombull89 It's a bit more controversial if you're going in from scratch, but switching from one good brand to another is just daft
Even if the Ruckus is marginally better (Which I doubt), I refuse to believe any real business case could be made for it

it could be old gear
802.11b access points etc

@RobM Probably. The plan is to merge the networks between us and our partner school.
and as part of that we're having that ^^ done as well

Dan
@pauska I suppose, that is old though - enterprise wireless in schools is a pretty new concept from what I've seen.

that seems mad

11:01 AM
Why? I don't know. If they've got fucktons of money to spend on stuff that doesn't need doing really I'd love to have another member of staff or two to help us out with it all.

Dan
Why have they gone off the chassis? Presumbably it already has failover Flex and OA's?

@Dan I honestly don't know. The suppliers that are doing the work are probably in cahoots with Dell.

Dan
Ah well, it's only our money they're spending :D

Personally I think it "hey, it's a school. Let's give them what they don't need, they'll pay for it anyway"

Dan
I don't know why I'm ever surprised when I see wasted money in the public sector

11:02 AM
@Dan ಠ_ಠ

We use Dell here so I don't have a problem with them but it seems crazy to switch from one perfectly good top tier vendor's current product to another, full stop.

We spent nearly 2k last year upgrading the RAM in the ESXi hosts.

@tombull89 sounds like whoever's making the decisions above you doesn't know what they're doing, but thinks that they do.

are enterprise hdds worth it for light workload?

@RobM let's not go there.

11:05 AM
maybe my boss is managing your school as well as my college. He does disappear at odd times.

@Dan there is waste everywhere, it's just more visible in the public sector

Dan
@Iain Oh yeah, I don't doubt that - but some of the Public projects take it to the extreme AND it's our money
@Luka Yes.

thanks... If that's the case, do you have any idea please on WD SE vs RE debate?

SE vs RE?

western digital SE vs western digital RE

Dan
11:15 AM
SE = SATA and RE = SAS, no?

are we talking about enterprise disks here?

Dan
I'd go SAS anytime you can

Yes, sorry I was referring to the SATA version of RE vs SE

10 hours ago, by Michael Hampton
@Luka For your nice home server, black, RE or red should be fine. Wouldn't do blue or green.

yes but blacks can broke the arrays

Dan
11:17 AM
Oooh, this is a home question
Just buy what you can afford and make sure to back up

All in all the question is: is there any difference in the failure rate of say RED vs RE?

@Luka go and research that on google or ask the manufactureres

I did searched a lot on google

we don't know more than google
especially when it comes to home user equipment

Dan
This is a home use server, that is going to get "light use" - your drive selection will not impact you a great deal. Just pick a couple you like, stuff them into RAID1, configure a backup and be on your way

11:19 AM
search more, or try asking a proper question on superuser.com

from your experience on datacenters, is there any difference in say black vs re in reliability?

We got lots of opinions but when it comes to home kit especially we don't know.

Dan
@Luka Wouldn't know because I've never put them into a DC :)

In the server field, is there any difference? After searching here and there, many hosting companies use Black HDDs. This makes me believe there is no big difference between black s

Dan
Most of us here will use our hardware manufacturers disks (Dell / HP / etc)

11:22 AM
OK.

Dan
Look, you're comparing apples and oranges
Enterprise and DC work is TOTALLY different to anything you're doing at home

Aren't those HDDs rebranded ones?

Dan
Yes, but they'll generally have different firmware

this is getting dull now plonk

Ow, I didn't thought that... Anyway... last question: wd or seagate?

Dan
11:24 AM
And not WD AFAIK - I think HP are Seagate?
@Luka Whichever one you like
It will not matter in any meaningful way

Whatever Dell are rebranding for their 15k rpm 2.5" SAS drives.
unless the device you have has a preference on its preferred hardware list then it almost certainly doesn't matter

I have greens in my Microserver. Not had any issues with them (although it's not on 24/7 I must admit)

WD Green? I have them in my home NAS. Can't remember last time that was on though. anyone want to buy an old thecus nas?

@tombull89 apples, oranges and now pears

Dan
@RobM Mebbe - spec and money?

11:29 AM
I got another server over the holidays - spec'd it to have two dual core cpus. Got it, installed Windows, and realise it's got hyper-threading on the machine.

@dan thecus.com/product.php?PROD_ID=10 with 1Tb drives, haven't thought that far ahead yet, what do you think its worth, if you're interested

Dan
@RobM Gosh, I have no idea - I'm just thinking of stuff I'm going to need when operating alone. Though, actually, I may be better of building an actual server

@Dan Bought refurb from these guys. Might be worth a look for you.

anyone have any idea why apple kept the iPAD 2 and discontinued the 3/4 when the air came out ?

Dan
@tombull89 Cheers dude

11:38 AM
@dan you probably would actually :)
@iain the ipad 2 as a "budget" model? I think we might buy some here

friends
wild-cards tag should be created
[wild-cards]
anyone with enough status?

@RodrigoGurgel which question

Dan
@RobM Yeah, even if I have a NAS I'm going to need something to back it up. Can see me having to spend some £££ over the next few months

Q: Who created the cover art from the newer Wild Cards Book I with Jetboy on it?

Rodrigo GurgelWho created the cover art for the newer Wild Cards Book I edition with Jetboy on it? (The one published in 2010.) Is he or she responsible for the other covers?

Dan
That's nothing to do with us

11:40 AM
Commics? Wild Cards?

@RodrigoGurgel that's not a ServerFault question I doubt anyone here can help

I'm just looking for someone with needed status
ok
thanks
I don't need an answer from you
just the tag, but thanks

Nah we can't tag there.

Dan
Nobody here has rep there

11:43 AM
those stack like sites should have shared status... rsss
thanks

@Dan as with any other configurator site it's fun to see how expensive you can get stuff :D

Dan
@tombull89 :D

I think the Apple Mac Pro wins at "how expensive"

I'm a bit narked that I didn't properly read up the spec of the spare 32GB of RAM I had at home. If I did I could have got a server would have had the right CPUs and therefore I could have used it all.
ah well
that's the HP Site for helpfulness.

The HP website is evil. It's even worse than the Dell one, and that's fucking abysmal

Dan
11:50 AM
Whoop, credit card debt now less than half what it was after the Wedding / New York

woo

what's the loon on meta raving about ?

which loon?

he appears to have asked a question, got a series of answers and is now ... I dunno

oh that. I'm not sure.
I don't think he has a problem with the site at all, and is simply using meta as a platform to ask "Has there really been no major change in SOHO networking since I last went shopping"?
I was a bit bemused by that too

11:54 AM
I should change my answer to "nope"

@RobM read his profile - he's a whinger

@iain ooh yes, fair one. Though I don't think he was in that particular case
