[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Few unique characters in answer, blacklisted user: A cursor with the name 'MY_CURSOR' already exists by Skywalker on stackoverflow.com (@quartata @iBug @TetsuyaYamamoto)

@Mithrandir Even I am willing to work with you guys. Thats why I always said I am just concerned about our identity being hooked up as Blacklisted on GITHUB under your account. You maintain your personal database and keep whatever you want thats not my concern. But if our identity is linked up as Blacklisted on a third party site then absolutely we will be concerned about it.
So I am one more time requesting you to delete all the URLs that are linking our identity as Blacklisted from your GITHUB posts or account.

@SmokeDetector k

@tripleee I volunteer for Chinese translation (I'm native to) for Smokey's report.

9:04 AM
@Tech Can you please explain why exactly being blacklisted on our personal list is bad for you?

@Mithrandir Keep the list personal I have no issues with that. But do not make it public on a site like GITHUB.

Why? I assume you do know what the point of GitHub is?

on the side I am also emailing to the provided email ID so that you can do the needful.

GitHub is a place for people to put their code and work on it. It's good for a collaborative project like this one.
The blacklist is - at the moment - part of the code.
So it goes into GitHub.

9:08 AM
Asking us to remove it from GitHub is asking us to remove it completely from our detection processes.

I am again repeating - I have no issues with your code, your work, your personal database. I am only concerned that my company's reputation has been put on a negative side on a public place openly like GITHUB.
by your accounts

If you see anymore Chinese (Simplified or Traditional, even if it's Cantonese) and have trouble understanding, I am able to provide help.

meeting postponed but browser acting up, gimme a sec ...

@Tech Would you prefer if we did it on another account? </sarcasm>

NVZ
This is getting awkeard really fast

9:10 AM
@Tech we have asked you multiple times specifically and explicitly to explain why and how this is a problem, can you please tell us that? it helps assess the feasibility of a possible solution

@Tech I don't understand why we affect your reputation. The spammers did, not us.

@Tech You still haven't answered my question. Why do you say that this is giving you a bad reputation?

@Tech I too am concerned that our site's sanitation is being put on a negative side by direct damage by spamming.

Why does the list matter to the "reputation" of your site? Tell us that, or we cannot help you, unfortunately.

tpu- by Tetsuya Yamamoto

@paper1111 spammers are already banned by respective sites. So the action is already taken.

@tripleee That's what I'm implicitly requesting :)

All variants of Chinese.

9:12 AM
@NVZ because it is linking our identity as Blacklisted on a public place by your accounts.

@Tech Who is going to be looking at the source code for our bot though?

@Tech can you point to some resource to verify that this is actually affecting your SEO for example?
@Mithrandir thanks, will edit

NVZ
@Tech I don't think that's how it works. But you didn't answer how it would affect your site in particular.

And you keep repeating 'by your accounts'. Why is the fact that it's our accounts so important?

@Tech We can easily add a few words of description that "This site has known spam history" so as not to confuse viewers from thinging from "blacklist". Would that be satisfactory?

9:15 AM
@NVZ It effects our online reputation - repeated multiple times in above discussion trail.

Do we support comments (starting with hash #) in those txt's?

@Tech affects how? repeated multiple times as you can easily see even without scrolling back

I know we do for RegExs.

we are going around in circles.. The question is how?

@iBug not really now

9:16 AM
@Tech So do you think that we are affecting Google's reputation? We have an entry for sites.google.com; are we ruining Google's reputation?

there's a hack you can put in so a regex which doesn't match anything is ignored as part of the expression

sorry, this needs to be ended - every new person is coming up here and revolving the discussion around.

@tripleee I think it's only an extra line of code (for if) and a few extra lines indented.

@Tech No, we're trying to understand why you're making your request.

@Tech do you need a list of open questions or how would you like to proceed? I agree that this discussion is not moving in the right direction

9:17 AM
@Tech The discussiln is revolving around because you haven't answered our question directly: Why and How?

@tripleee You can even do te[sssss]t, and it still only matches test

@Ferrybig as alluded to in an earlier comment, yeah (-:

@Tech If you can provide a convincing answer, we're eager to proceed your request.
@tripleee That'd damage performance. I don't like it.

Perhaps @Tech, @tripleee, and perhaps I can move to a different room to continue this if @Tech feels like people are piling on?

@Mithrandir Great job. I'll be coming if you move.

9:18 AM
@iBug how many times same answer I have to repeat. It is no concern of yours to know how we manage our online reputation.

@Tech You're making it our concern by demanding that we remove your website from our blacklist.

@Tech we need to understand the scope of changes that are acceptable to you

@Tech We understand your concern about your reputation. But do you understand our concern for spam on our sites?

@iBug I meant Tech as the one with the complaint, trip as an admin, and me as a mod in case I'm needed :)

@iBug which of your sites our company has done spam - explain me ?

9:20 AM
@Tech We showed you the Metasmoke records. The actual posts have been removed by now, but we keep a record.

@Tech again, can we please pause the discussion until we have decided how exactly to proceed in a more controlled fashion?

@Tech See this message.

@tripleee not sure tbh. I'd have told them to go pound sand instantly
Legally and procedurally they have no recourse even if they want to. They have to entirely rely on our goodwill to get anywhere

tbh the darker side of me wants to publicly name and shame them on meta to actualize the consequences of trying to bully us into doing their online reputation management for them

FWIW I'm almost certain metasmoke.erwaysoftware.com/post/79235 is keyword spam now
After looking at the other occurences this has similarity in user name mentions and is only tangentially related to its question

@Magisch Can't extract keyword from that post. Can you provide one?

@Magisch One thing we have to put into that article is that most of the pages are excluded from web crawlers by robots.txt, metasmoke fully, and github on all commit and blob url's

10:05 AM
"keyword spam" in terms of "Hey this question/article is about <$genericKeyword> lemme post an article about <$genericKeyword>"
usually used to increase a site's SEO rating and association rating for special keywords

I guess that even if we would remove/obfuscate the blacklist entry, the PRs he mentioned will still be publicly visible, right?

I'm baffled why we're considering to accomodate this at all
Guess y'all are a lot more magnanimous then I'd be

10:36 AM
@Glorfindel Yup they can only be deleted by GitHub

The reason says Post - Repeated character: *aaaaaaaaaaaaabbbbbbbbbbbbccccccccccccccaaaaaaaaaaaaabbbbbbbbbbbbcccccccccccccc*‌
I believe it would be more reasonable if it's written as Post - Repeated character: *aaaaaaaaaaaaa*, *bbbbbbbbbbbb*, *cccccccccccccc*, *aaaaaaaaaaaaa*, *bbbbbbbbbbbb*, *cccccccccccccc*

@Magisch well, I seriously consider the possibility that those users aren't affiliated with the website. That doesn't make it not spam, but I can understand Tech's frustration.

Is that worth fixing?

Rob
@ArtOfCode From a purely legal perspective, libel only applies to things which are false statements. Blacklisting a site doesn't accuse it of anything

I'm lowering the "repeated" threshold from 11 to 10 as well.

10:37 AM
@Glorfindel If I was a business owner I wouldn't be thrilled either but my anger would be directed at the spammers

@Magisch my default position is no, but I want to make sure I've reviewed everything in case there's anything exceptional before I actually go making decisions

@Magisch But Tech (apparently) can't control those. He can't even contact them.

@Rob indeed

And if I'd ask for something like this at all I'd do it in a less insulting and arrogant way

!!/test aaaaaaaaaa (10 repeated)

10:38 AM
> Would not be caught as a post, title or username.

@Magisch 100% truth.

!!/test aaaaaaaaaaa (11 repeated)

> Repeating characters in body, repeating characters in title
----------
Title - Repeated character: *aaaaaaaaaaa*
Post - Repeated character: *aaaaaaaaaaa*

I guess the method of contact just rubs me wrong

No one responds to me :( Fine I'll submit a PR directly.

Rob

although I suspect github will tell them to pound sand

10:48 AM
@Magisch fine by me, they have no legal argument here.

sure

A polite request would have more chance of working - I'd still have said no, but it'd've been better than legal threats.
DMCA doesn't even apply because there's no copyright involved
in Blacklist removal discussion (Metasmoke #304 / SmokeDetector #1444), 1 min ago, by ArtOfCode
@Tech Unfortunately we can't do what you're asking us to here. Firstly, we have no proof that you're an authorized representative of Webline India. Secondly, from a legal standpoint, this is not defamation. Thirdly and most importantly, removing the domain would be contrary to our project's goals, and you haven't provided any explanation or evidence of how Webline India will be preventing its domain appearing in further spam.

tbh if they'd be polite and present evidence that they've taken steps to discourage their community from spamming and if they'd be an authorized rep of the company
I'd have been fine with obfuscating the rule so it no longer directly links the site
@ArtOfCode Yeah but unscrupulous people like to use it to censor content
