I have updated github.com/tripleee/metasmoke/tree/dockerize but it still says mine is 1331 commits ahead of master so I don't think I can create a useful pull request ... can someone figure out what's wrong? did metasmoke master get rolled back to some earlier commit somehow after I forked it?
regardless, how do I reconcile the differences into a manageable PR? there should be no more than a dozen commits or so
8 commits in all in my fork which were authored by me but some of them might even be from some earlier PR
actually maybe I should just cherry-pick those into a separate fork ...?
but not today, I honestly need to get some real paid work done

Paid work...

@tripleee You should call it mobylize instead of dockerize, as the project has been renamed: github.com/docker/docker (it redirects to the new name)

I moved the more general phone number to watchlist.

@Ferrybig hmmm, the command is still called docker and the file is called Dockerfile ... right? it's been called moby on Github for as long as I have been paying attention (which is not altogether a very long time I admit)

You may have to resolve conflict by merging the changes because an extra watchlist item was added.

@Undo so basicly what I'd been thinking
Whats your stance on obfuscating a blacklist entry (with no change on effectiveness) when a company asks nicely?

That'd probably be a decent middle ground

Does anyone know what is "coverage"?

unless they're actually a spam company. If they're just an unfortunate common carrier, it's probably reasonable to throw a bracket or two in there.

@Undo did you read the entire convo? It's actually quite humorous, the guy threatens us with legal action and action against our github accounts
And we still don't know in how far he even was an authorized rep of the company

@Magisch yeah, don't worry about that. I'll handle it if it happens.

@Tech Unfortunately we can't do what you're asking us to here. Firstly, we have no proof that you're an authorized representative of Webline India. Secondly, from a legal standpoint, this is not defamation. Thirdly and most importantly, removing the domain would be contrary to our project's goals, and you haven't provided any explanation or evidence of how Webline India will be preventing its domain appearing in further spam.

About deleting posts: you can delete your posts without any recuperation when they: are of negative score and not accepted (in case of answers). For questions you can not delete them if they have a positive scored and/or accepted answer. Mass deletion however will and that is good it does raise moderator flags, because your posts ar not only for yourself as per SE guidelines.

also if a deleted post is >60 days old, and it's deleted, the author's rep doesn't change. the rep increases/losses applied by votes "stick".

NVZ
One can request disassociating account from the posts.
@doppelgreener not getting that.. what?

@NVZ if i delete your +10/-0 post that you posted yesterday, you lose the 100 rep you gained from its upvotes. if i instead wait 60 days and delete it, you keep the 100 rep.

NVZ
4:58 PM
@doppelgreener I don't think that's true. Do you know for sure?

@doppelgreener It's more that the actionable part of defamation is "You unfairly hurt me" and that unfairly part skips out when what someone's saying about you is true.
@NVZ iirc doppel is right
60d and older and 3+ score

NVZ
@Magisch I see. Any meta about it I can read?

defamation is very, very hard to prove. You have to prove it was false, then prove that it actually damaged you, and that the defendant knew it was false. Add +10 to difficulty if you're in India and trying to sue a bunch of people on the Internet.

yes there is some meta about that (hope i find it now)

> Deleting and undeleting posts may reverse reputation effects as well, if these posts have votes. Actions previously taken on deleted posts cease to affect reputation within five minutes (source), unless the post meets both the following criteria (in which case the reputation effects will be permanent) (source):

@Magisch nice! thanks.

NVZ
Thanks, I'm reading those metas now.
@Undo Ah, some days I wish I could delete the internet. But then I wake up, and realize I'm not Chuck Norris.

@Undo defamation / libel / slander are all notoriously almost impossible to prove in the US

5:05 PM
@NVZ so now you got a minus point for even considering deleting the Internet, but you mentioned chucky, so you got a plus point aswell, were even :P

@Magisch As they should be. Free speech is a pretty nice thing.

NVZ
Okay, so thanks for that new info. @doppelgreener @Videonauth @Magisch and all

going so far that even giant companies often times don't bother even if they think they have a case, because you need to:

- Prove false the statements
- Prove libellous intent
- Prove concrete damages

especially 2 and 3 of this are almost impossible unless someone admits it to your face
also opinion is also an absolute defense vs accusations in that respect
so unless you specifically and intentionally state a false fact (as fact, explicitly) and damage the other party in a quantifiable and provable way, you can't be sued for it :p

What people don't understand is that their company enters the public domain to some extent as soon they start listing as a business. Sure this makes em eligible to defend the use of their company name by others and so on (if they have taken the proper precautions legally). but imagine coka-cola suing eveyone writing their name somewhere in a review or other manners which is of public interest

That's a different thing called fair use

5:08 PM
this entire thing has nothing to do with copyright tho
You can't copyright a URL

Huh. Can you?
Never thought about that

a URL isn't a copyrightable work

Can you trademark it?

it's a ressource identifier. You can't copyright a URL in the same way I can't copyright a id in a db

So...not a lawyer, but you sure?

NVZ
5:10 PM
@doppelgreener On IPS.SE, there were some recent waves of deleting old beta-start questions, that are now as per newly evolving scope poor quality questions.. so all the associated answers with many upvotes were lost. So I took some rep hit because I was one of the first few users who filled the site with answers. I thought I lost some rep, because I noticed some fall in my rep. So I'm confused what happened there.

IANAL obviously but pretty sure
@Undo I guess you can trademark a brand name and that could be in the URL, no?

But can I name my company "www.isellstuff.com LLC"?

Found this on the internet (so, it's true): newmediarights.org/business_models/artist/…
No copyright. Yes trademark

@Undo In trademark law there is a thing called common terms and substantial similaritiy iirc

5:11 PM
and now we're out of my ability to even fake being a lawyer

not a lawyer still but I think this is why tempo lost the trademark for paper cloths

@Undo You can still pound the desk and shout that you object.

12 hours ago, by Undo
100k posts. Thank you all, and congratulations. Someone should be in touch, SE is sending everyone stickers

google("can I copyright a url")
No, for a variety of reasons web addresses (also known as a domain names or URLs) aren't protected by copyright. Even though copyright doesn't protect domain names, that doesn't mean domain names are entirely unprotected. ... However, it's worth noting one of the major differences between trademark and copyright law.

I looked it up, you can lose your trademark if:

- You misuse it or wrongfully sue someone over it (court sanctions can include revoking your trademark alltogether)
- You fail to enforce it after beeing given ample opportunity to do so
- Your trademark becomes a generic term in the population for what you're doing (thats what happened to tempo)

- your trademark isn't sufficiently distinctive

can someone explain me what helios is supposed to do regarding the blacklist entries?

8:09 PM
@Videonauth Pulls them out of Github and puts them in a central database. This does the following: 1.) Eliminates the need to build against Travis on each entry 2.) Immediately adds the new pattern without requiring a restart 3.) Quickly gets all other instances of smokey up to date with the newest patterns.
It will also allow us to maintain notifications across instances of smokey

ah ok

The repository will see a dramatic reduction in commits when Helios integration is done. Instead of new patterns being added constantly, it will only have actual code changes

ok makes sense, just give me a hint before youre pulling the blacklist from the repo :P

Metasmoke will be updated when Helios is ready to show the blacklist there. We'll still need the ability to add/remove things and that'll be in MS (hopefully...I'm not a rails person).
MS will probably handle the commit to Helios/get approval before commit to Helios step too

Or more than 10 percent of the words are in the offensive list?

9:58 PM
Do we even have a list of "profanity"?

We've got what's in the offensive regex...

if (1000 * len_of_match / len(s)) >= 15: # currently at 1.5%, this can change if it needs to
If I understand correctly, this is saying that a post that has less than 1.5% matching the regex will not be reported?
