@Undo just looking at some of the reports around Meltdown/Spectre... looks like the worst affected systems are poorly indexed/cached databases. Which means we're gonna have to do some optimization work with the MS DB.
"indexing the indexes" may not have been such a joke after all...

Drop indices and use jQuery?
in six to eight weeks?

:P

😊

Urgh, this CPU thing is such good going away news

@angussidney Intel's bug?

12:04 AM
@iBug yeah, I have intel chips in basically all of my computers

I'm a fan of Intel, LOL.

@angussidney the effect is being over-exaggerated as usual, though

Though I think that bug won't have a huge impact to consumer-class users.

Still, this would increase AMD competition, which is always a good thing for consumers

Day-to-day use is affected, obviously, but the impact isn't likely to be measurable

12:05 AM
@iBug yeah

The 20-30% impact numbers being thrown around are worst-case impact figures for specific kinds of usage
like databases

Not that good for us developers then
I feel sorry for the poor people who are going to be fired because their bosses aren’t following the news

@angussidney Partially.
The price of GeForce, Quadro and Tesla won't drop.

@angussidney no, but if any group of users is going to be affected it may as well be developers, because at least we have the tools and knowledge to mitigate the impact

Use AMD EPYC?

12:09 AM
index your databases properly
and make judicious use of caching

@iBug Eh, Radeon technologies has been separated from AMD for a while now, and Vega hasn’t gone too well on the high end
@iBug I still find that stuff utterly amazing. Shame not many cloud providers use it yet.

> 99989 total reports
stop gloating metasmoke

Because Intel has dominated the server market for so many years?

C’mon spammers.... I’m losing connection in about 10 mins and I want to see this happen

Yeah it's exciting to see the 100k milestone!

12:13 AM
@iBug yeah. I’m all in for more competition - means lower prices and better products for all

@angussidney Maybe everything is optimized for Xeon and EPYC is coming too late?
@angussidney Lol. When GeForce drops its price I can play 3A games with a lower cost.
Every gamer has a dream of possessing a GTX 1080

@iBug We already have one. We do.

@Mithrandir Oops.

If it's an edit, we don't blacklist.
Otherwise... yes.

We do, if it seems to be a troll and the whole post is an insult-fest. We don't if it's just a single slipped word and the rest of the post is fine after editing.

@quartata Yeah. 20k quota daily with a maximum estimation of 15k posts rodat.
But what exactly is the API quota?

Well if we made one call per post we'd definitely run out of quota
We don't do that

@Glorfindel How did you earn "Fanatic" on various sites where you have zero Q and zero A?

@iBug it's just based on visiting

@quartata So I can create an account everywhere and expect effortless "Fanatic" by visiting CHQ?

no
visiting that particular site

What's the motivation?
But in fact, I have a 7-day streak on Super User where I am sure I don't.

@Undo Autoflag on but no SU flags.
Wait.
I see 5 flags in the past few days.
Definitely cast by Metasmoke.
Alright. That's the explanation.

@Undo I see unfamiliar spam flags cast
??????
Oh NO!
I'm recognising them.
When Smokey posts a report I go check it before giving feedback.
That included SU.
LOL, had a bad mind

heh

Confirmed.
I developed the habit of inspecting the real post before taking review actions in the LQP queue on SO
and I brought that habit here

Probably not a bad habit

Yeah.
What I do in the actual page usually is casting an extra NAA/VLQ flag (for badge) and leaving some (auto) comments.
Sometimes I stop reviewing the LQP queue when it reaches 19, and keep skipping after flagging, because when I do the 20th review I no longer have access until the next day.
Hmmm... I'm expecting the spam hour

How does Smokey have 301 rep on SO?
Someone gave it a bounty on a deleted answer?

we pumped it for a while for flag privs when we were going a different direction on autoflagging
some people got upset at the idea of robots flagging stuff, so we went the distributed accounts route instead. More flags, less drama

(In the end it is the same thing)

Well then, 301 seems to be 201 + assoc bonus.

@micsthepick Except more sustainable for us
Now we can easily scale to however many flags we want

@micsthepick Basic difference: distributed flags can be manually retracted.

4:48 AM
SO account came first, no association bonus

301???

Also that would start at 101
+200
@iBug ?

Why is it 301?

Rep from edits?

@iBug eh, we could more easily write an auto-retractor thing for a single account. That's a disadvantage
