I don't quite get how the gelatinous cube trick for permakilling riders works
What do you do after the cube absorbs the rider?

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@Doorknob bro do you even ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

.-.

Anyways

there's really no point in trying to get rid of the Riders

12:01 AM
I was under the impression Pestilence was annoying af
But eh if you're that far already you can probably take most things

Pesty is very annoying, which is why you ascend instead of.. sticking around

OK I get the cube trick now
Cube eats it, you polymorph into a nymph and steal it, then you loot a cursed bag of holding until it gets destroyed.
Really elaborate and totally unnecessary...

yeah...
probably only useful as a Stupid Ascension Trick :P

The slime trick is clever and looks pretty easy though.

The acid blobs?

12:05 AM
No, green slimes.
You can turn the riders into slimes.

oh, I've not heard of that one either
have to level drain them first?

Nope.
Slime attack isn't magical apparently

huh

That means it works with Death too

You would need lots of cursed geno scrolls though?

12:06 AM
Nah
You just polymorph yourself into the green slime

oh ha

You could do it with a reverse geno but I don't see why
Unless you wanted to tame the slimes and use them for something else

Added a golfed version to the gist for fun lol

The only Astral trick that I've employed is wishing for a c corpse

I've used exactly 0 Astral tricks because I've never been to Astral

12:07 AM
some people like to reverse geno purple worms and then teleport them all over the plane
I've never done that
@quartata lol

@Doorknob lol wat
That sounds.... highly problematic if you do it wrong

well you read a scroll of taming first
and then break a wand of teleport (or just zap it at all of them)

Oh I thought you meant teleport the purple worms w/o taming them
That's a little more sane then

@Calvin'sHobbies not a bad idea

I just got Fanatic.

Go me.
dances

12:17 AM
Congratulations.

I'm still ahead of you all by one though. :P

The gold badge looks so beautiful. I am enticed by its glory.

@quartata By one gold medal? You sure about that?

I actually found the gold badge rather disappointing after being so hyped about it

12:18 AM
@quartata I vote too much on answers. Once I get 25% votes on questions, I'll catch up.

@Calvin'sHobbies Not you obviously
I meant more "the assorted group of people that have been here for 4 months or less"

@Calvin'sHobbies 399 bronze badges. I'm sure that's annoying.
@quartata I've been here for a year+

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Skeet has 6k

@quartata ಠ_ಠ
@quartata o______o

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ 3*4*9

@quartata all? ;)

@Calvin'sHobbies 3*4*9 = 108

Okay guys, aside from permalinks and render-to-gif, any features you really want for this? Randomness and multiple states are maybe going to happen, but don't count on it.

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ 3-4-9
ugh

I'm confused.

12:21 AM
349, not 399

@El'endiaStarman Add a GoLscript interpreter.
:P

And for goodness' sake, add a friggin title element!!!
Flood fill.
Selection from common patterns.

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Done.

12:23 AM
I haven't pushed the changes yet, but I'll do that when I add the next feature.

@El'endiaStarman Stochastic CAs. Nothing fancy, but maybe just a "live/die probability" field

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Eh, I doubt I'll do this because there's a lot more than just plain Game of Life here.

Other than that pretty feature complete 10/10

@El'endiaStarman True.
If you're ambitious, allow choice of which sides wrap.

@quartata Would the probabilit[y|ies] be for both birth and survival or individually?

12:24 AM

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Possible, probably not very hard, but meh.

@El'endiaStarman I was thinking individually, but up to you

I had a pretty great lucid dream last night.

Wait does that mean you're gonna actually implement it? :3

@El'endiaStarman satisfy my curiosity

12:25 AM
@PhiNotPi Spill

Something I found while perusing transcripts. c:

@quartata I think I shall. After permalinks.

@FlagAsSpam lol

^

@El'endiaStarman Cool.

12:26 AM
Permalinks. @El'endiaStarman

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Are you making a suggestion?

No. A command :P

Okay, just making sure. I guess @AlexA. retains his throne as King of I-Can't-Read for another day.

haha

Also, did you notice my "flood fill suggestion"?

12:29 AM
Yes, I did, actually.
I doubt I'll do it. Why would it be useful?
Honest question.

I just spent five ish minutes filling in the tile with a B0/S0 rule :P
Also, "kill all cells" would be useful

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ That's what the Clear button does.

@El'endiaStarman Does it retain the rules?

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Do B0/S012345678 if you want all cells to instantly become alive. Or B0/S and do a single step. Simple.

@El'endiaStarman But you have to select the rule and fill in the cells, right?

12:32 AM
Not that bad with click-and-drag.

mehhhhh
flood fill still wanted :P
At least provide some API.
:::P

Nothing too much happened, it was most the fact that it was probably the most "thoroughly" lucid dream that I'd ever had.
Around 3am or some time like that, I randomly woke up and had trouble falling back asleep... but when I did, I basically entered a dream that involved me laying in bed. It felt kinda like I was hallucinating (except I don't actually know what that's like), but then I had a realization: if I'm visualizing my room, and my eyes are actually closed, then the only thing I need to do is to "hop out of bed" and then I'd be lucid dreaming. And so that's what happened. I had f

12:34 AM
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ How do you mean?

@El'endiaStarman So I could do something like "fill every Nth cell" with some commands.
At least it's SVG
I could probably write some myself.

That's...kinda beyond what I want to do. :P
I would like to finish this tonight.

Actually, while we're talking about dreams

@El'endiaStarman Go ahead, finish it, just leave it somewhat open :P

Wow, everyone seems to dream in color. Interesting.

12:35 AM
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ It's JavaScript. Totally open. :P

And no votes for the electric sheep

@El'endiaStarman Does changing the fill color change the cell effect?

✔ I usually don't remember my dreams when I wake up

Or is there something I need to look into further

@quartata I'm fairly sure I dream in color, but I usually don't take note.
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Colors are decorational only.

12:36 AM
mehhhhhh

@Sp3000 I should have added that as an option but the electric sheep joke was too good to pass up

you're making me read the code >_<

Too bad it didn't turn out right

first world problems

...what are you trying to do?
If you told me, I could probably tell you how to do it. :P

12:38 AM
XOXOXOXO
OXOXOXOX
XOXOXOXO
OXOXOXOX
XOXOXOXO

etc., where X and O are two different rules.
Good luck.

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ That UI makes me cringe... :/

Why? Bootstrap?

Well, the grid is stored internally as a 3D array. grid[y][x][k]; k=0 is the rule number (0-indexed), k=1 is the current state, and k=2 is the future state (used by updateGrid()).

Or because of uneven stuff

The layout

12:39 AM
I can fix the latter
@El'endiaStarman ugh I think I'll just mod it externally by triggering click events :P

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ That's...far more complicated than you need to do.
Just replace the grid and call updateGraphics().

Oh, wait, k is at the end
That makes it easier :P I skipped the code and read the explanation

...wow. :P

Also, custom width/height.

That's been implemented already.

12:41 AM
And zoom.

Probably won't do zoom.

facepalm ^^^

Unless we're talking changing the box size.

Changing the cell size

Okay, I can do that.

12:42 AM
\o/
ALL THE JQUERY--IT BURNS MY EYES

muahaha
It helps so much, though.

jQuery is run by the evil people
they cannot be trusted

how do I regex in Python

import re

12:46 AM
import re
regex = re.compile("expression")
stuff = regex.match(contents)
##or
stuff = regex.search(contents)

you don't need to compile

You can also do stuff = re.match("expression", contents) if it's a one-time (or few-times) use.

I never do because I"m lazy

kthx

200
Q: Is it worth using Python's re.compile?

MatIs there any benefit in using compile for regular expressions in Python? h = re.compile('hello') h.match('hello world') vs re.match('hello', 'hello world')

^^ I'm pretty lazy too

12:48 AM
So, tl:dr; compiling regexes is really only useful for having a variable you can pass around. All regexes are compiled and cached internally.

Any way to reset the field @El'endiaStarman?

Reset meaning...?

Like, refresh the page, without refreshing it

Not yet.

12:49 AM
That'll be easy to do.

function setGridState(state){
	for(var y=0;y<gridH;y++){
		for(var x=0;x<gridW;x++){
			grid[y][x][0]=state;
		}
	}
	updateGraphics();
}

Aaand done.
@PhiNotPi Haha, that one.

@El'endiaStarman Maybe intermediate states? :3

....intermediate?
35 mins ago, by El'endia Starman
Okay guys, aside from permalinks and render-to-gif, any features you really want for this? Randomness and multiple states are maybe going to happen, but don't count on it.

12:56 AM
Yeah! 0, 0.5, 1!
Multiple states, yeah. ^^"

How does that make sense?
Ah, thought so. :P

A half-dead cell.

B results in +0.1, not S results in -0.1

Two neighbouring half-dead cells are a "live" cell

...that's beyond what I want to do. :P

12:58 AM
Option for removing rules?

Is there an SE site where I can ask about the PSAT and related stuff?

rules = [{"dead":"#000000","alive":"#FFFFFF","birth":[3],"survive":[2,3]},{"dead":"#0000a0","alive":"#80ffff","birth":[0],"survive":[8]},{"dead":"#800000","alive":"#ff0000","birth":[0],"survive":[0]}];
function everyOther(state1,state2){
	var statesCt = 2;
	states = [state1,state2];
	for(var i=0;i<statesCt;i++){
		for(var y=0;y<gridH;y++){
			for(var x=(y+i)%statesCt;x<gridW;x+=statesCt){
				grid[y][x][0]=states[i];
			}
		}
	}
	updateGraphics();
}
everyOther(1,2);
Press "run". @El'endiaStarman

@Maltysen There's a site on Area 51 for highschoolers I think, but I don't think there's an Academia Junior
I got a 240 on my PSAT last year though, can I help you at all?

nice, I got a perfect score this year also
but I'm a sophomore
so no NMS

Grats! I got a 228ish my sophomore year

1:01 AM
@PhiNotPi WHAT

and I was wondering if I could somehow use this years score for the NMS

Unfortunately not

aww
k thanks, anyways

Best of luck next year!

Isn't it out of 1520?

1:03 AM
It changed this year. And that's the SAT

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ cool

@El'endiaStarman danke
@Calvin'sHobbies Is this better?
(ignore the bad button)

I took the PSAT in fall of 2015 and got a 1240
Where did you get the grading scale for PSAT

Oh wow, my bad. It's only the PSAT that went to a weird number. Thought it was both of them that went to 152(0)
Link PSAT is 1520, SAT is 1600

I took it without a calculator :/
Forgot I had the test that day and didn't bring it ... waste of $20

1:11 AM
XD
At least you didn't dish out 140 for a BW TI-84 when a colour one costs less

TI N-Spire CX CAS or GTFO :P

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ graph paper and a TI-30 work for me :P

@ZachGates ouch.
@Ampora Isn't the former pretty much a phone?

wym

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ It's essentially WolframAlpha
With TI-BASIC

1:15 AM
@Ampora iirc it has an extended version

I'm not familiar with that
I think you can download texting capabilities

I got a 220 when I took it, which was good enough to become a finalist (I live in a "curved" state.)

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ This one? amzn.com/B008HTIOOA Pretty much

Florida was like a 214 or something this year

@PhiNotPi Finalist is the top 0.5%, right?

1:17 AM
Yes, I think

@ZachGates 10/10 beautiful

-1, not an N-Spire

+1, not an N-Spire*

So, 10-1+1/10

1:17 AM
= 9+1/10 = 9.1

Anybody know why N-Spires don't do TI-BASIC?

My friend has one

They're too good for it

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ a typo changed my question

There are two types of handheld calculators: N-Spires and not N-Spires

1:18 AM
It has something more complex than 'BASIC. It has macros o_o

Wait
Never mind

@Ampora And my friends calc. It's an N-Spire literally connected to a hard drive

You should've seen my Economics teacher's face when four of us who are big on the math team were practicing questions before class with our N-Spires. He had no idea what he was looking at because all the calculators he was familiar with were TI-30somethings and below

XD
How to close an issue with a commit in GitHub?

1:24 AM
@El'endiaStarman Huh? What can't I read?

@AlexA. I was referring to the numerous times you've said "oh, I can't read" in some way or another.

Oh right.
Well, it's accurate, at least.

\o/
Wait, no box wrapping? :3

1:26 AM

:3
(It doesn't happen :P)

Like, a glider doesn't move across the edge?

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

...
refresh

@El'endiaStarman Does "toroidal" override "horizontal" and "vertical"? What's their relationship?

@Zgarb "toroidal" will set both, and "horizontal"/"vertical" will only set those.

1:31 AM
So the toroidal checkbox is basically redundant.

Kinda, yeah, except that you can use it to set both at once. It's for convenience.

@El'endiaStarman So now just permalinks and probabilities
It's pretty impressive that you rolled this out in 3 days

@quartata And, I remembered earlier, save/load state.
@quartata I started yesterday, so two. :D
It's far simpler than Spacewar!...
Plus, I got experience from that, so I catch bugs sooner now (or they don't happen at all).

1:45 AM
We've had two really excellent first time challenge makers post in the past 24 hours. :O

I've been hoping that this trend continues

Same.

I'm watching the American collegiate football championship right now, except we're pirating the UK broadcast, so we get to watch the British commercials.

noice
Do we have a American <-> British challenge?

1:52 AM
No. I thought about it a while back but there are too many annoying little edge cases.

Do we have a simple regex-esque challenge? i.e. write a program that checks if input matches format

Hi wrld.

@ZachGates Yes.

Q: Compile Regexes

FUZxxlIn this task you have to write a program that reads a regular expression and generates another program that outputs whether an input string is accepted by that regular expression. @quartata You still look like GOL Santa Claus.

What about a challenge where a program has to validate a regex that the source code must match?

1:56 AM
Doesn't sound familiar but IMO doesn't sound that interesting either

wait so a quine regex?

@ZachGates Like this?

of sorts, yeah

10
Q: Self-matching regex

DarthfettWrite a non-trivial regex that matches itself. For example, #.*$ will match a comment outside of a string in python until the end-of-line, and also matches itself in perl regex syntax. No.

1:57 AM
No?

No.

oh explain, sorry

Idk, I'm just fucking around.

@Maltysen A program that checks for a regex while matching said regex

1:58 AM
@ZachGates use replies

@Maltysen You say, not using a reply :P

@AlexA. ಠ_ಠ

:P

1:59 AM
Wait

@Ampora ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

@ZachGates oh, I was thinking of a challenge where you check if an input regexp matches the source of the program
