@M.A.R. Of course. That's how I know you love me. Why else would you have done it? (The trick is to ignore stalkers or maybe Interpol takes reports on them?) But think twice before involving any authorities, because in the stalker's sick mind, the stalker often considers themself the stalkee. Next thing you know, you're both in court and the freak is making eye contact with you.
@Usernew Yes. It means "so I wouldn't have had to have taken those dives" with "take a dive" meaning, in boxing, to pretend to get knocked out or lose in exchange for money
Is there something like if you haven’t been in here for x days, you won’t get notified if someone pings you? I hate to think that my fans feel I’ve deserted them, like the Iranian chemist. That guy adores me.
@AIQ Is there so response to your question that revising it, even totally changing it, makes a mess? If so, you can delete the question yourself. Leave a comment on the question, explaining why. It will eventually get deleted. You should ask a new one. If you're not yet clear on how you want to ask, maybe someone in here can help you write it.
@ColleenV I defer to your judgement. They've also apparently asked the same question all over the Internet. Anyway, I don't answer very often, and this sort of thing is one reason why. But it's true that I'm not willing to search for potential duplicates, or participate in the community in advocating for policy or tradition changes. I hear your explanations and now I get it better.
I see that fumblefingers found a duplicate by the dame person, but this one now has an answer that I think is probably pretty responsive to the question, and covers the possibility that an unusual context could change the answer. Any ideas?
I don't envy your job as a mod, and I really appreciate it, so I don't want to quibble. But it is a bit frustrating to find it closed while crafting an answer. 😢😢
@Man_From_India is my friend independent of ELL, so I assumed I knew how he would take it. But your answer reminds me that such assumptions are often wrong, and ... beyond that, it reminds me that I'll offer him my assistance in saying what he said in a way that might be more accessible to more people. 👍
@ColleenV Absolutely. I just wanted to share my own reaction with him, but not on the question, and certainly not as a downvote. Feedback is just that, right? For its receiver to decide if it's useful to them or not.
If I want to learn what allvthag other stiff means, related to the terms CGEL gives to the constructions and the differences in meaning, then I need an explanation that is easier for a non-expert to read. So, unfortunately, I (personally) don't like it as an answer.
@Man_From_India For me, your answer is so technical, dense, and detailed. I'm not motivated to read it because I basically just want to know if it's ok without the verb, and why.
Regarding ^ question, @M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ just private messaged me: I just know they're talking about me. I haven't slept for days and can't stop crying about it.
Is there any fixed term which can describe an emotional person who is very gentle, kind, sensitive, and can be easily upset?
I think a construction of "gentle," "delicate," and "tender" plus "morale" or possible "character" can work; although, this is only a simple guess and rooted from the qua...
@userr2684291 Yes, I've seen that info before, but in an informal situation, I just say Google's definition, Google('s) dictionary. In a formal situation, I think I've used "Google define operation" or similar. Because if they ain't sayin, I don't think we can know precisely what it is except that.
User2~pi is correct. A significant majority means not just a majority (anything greater than 50%), but a majority that's large (above 50%) enough to be "sufficiently great or important to be worthy of attention; noteworthy". That's from Google's definition of significant. You can have a small majority, a tiny one, large, vast, overwhelming, etc.
