Hi, can someone please reply to this thread:

Q: I did a ponytail <higher, lower> thanusual, did it on the side by mistake, is a little bit ahead than it usually is

It's about EnglishIf someone did a ponytail that is higher or lower than usual, is it natural to say: I did a ponytail higher (or lower) than usual. Do "higher/lower" natural in the sentence above? If someone made a side ponytail by mistake, is it okay to use: I did the ponytail on the side by mistake...

Good question. I don't know the most natural way to say those things, so I'd suggest watching YouTube videos on that topic. You can start with more generic searches like "how to do a side ponytail" or such.

Any native out there who could help me...... I still didn't get any replies:(

@It'saboutEnglish Be patient, please. It's only been six hours.
Most people aren't even up yet.

A: Choosing a shop name

Mari-Lou AWithout knowing what a dojo is (I had to look it up) "Valhalla Dojo" looks like a person's first and last name. You might want to avoid possible ambiguity. For example, Max Gym Max's Gym In the first sentence, Max could be short for “maximum” suggesting that the gym has maximu...

@It'saboutEnglish Well, Aussies are, so I've just asked my friend and she says the way you phrased it is fine, but she'd use the terms a high ponytail, a side ponytail, and a high side ponytail, respectively.
Oops. I mean to refer to the whole question: ell.stackexchange.com/questions/205538/choosing-a-shop-name
For the love of All that's Holy, Righteous, and Good, fellow, ELLers, please reopen the question so I may answer it.

vote to re-open first, laugh later, user... @userr2684291
If that is your real name
11:52
Wish I could, wish I could...
O.O
Are you of such low reputation that you can't?
Be honest.
Yes.
I'm at 2k.
Wait. Oh, really?
Haha, yeah.
You can't vote to re-open?
Well, I guess people do need something to look forward to, but still !
PM me your credit card info. I can get you that privilege within an hour.
Types of ponytail ... really?
11:54
I'd rather not ever have that sort of power in my hands, to be honest.
It's enough that I'm allowed to flag.
Isn't there a hairstyles.stackexchange for that kind of immensely interesting stuff?
Have you flagged today?
Be honest
I was about to.
I have the flag window opened and so far it has "This" written in it.
ok. you got me.
Hmm... may I suggest ...
... sucks ??
11:57
But I see Colleen is here, and she might expedite this process...
It just seems intuitive
She can't give any opinion. She's a moderator.
Hm, true.
It would appear inappropriate
@JimReynolds pretty sure there’s a duplicate of that question somewhere. I’ve been trying to group them with tags because we get a lot of what’s the difference between “X of Y”, “X Y”, and “X’s Y”
Oh ... xxxx's Y or xxxx Y. Sure. There must be.
I was more interested in creating a bit of drama.
11:59
I don’t have the time to dig for it right now, but I think it would have the possessives and attributives tags
I think it should be specific though ...
Proper place name ... generic noun
That's true as well. It's a common sort of question. However, this issue really comes down to idiomaticness. Both expressions are grammatical, but the real question lies in whether either of them is idiomatic in that context.
I have an answer using "Hell's Kitchen" as an example ready to go.
Actually, I see it as a naming question which is explicitly off-topic
O.O
Interesting, though. Because they say both that they want to name something, and that they want to know what's more "grammatical"
12:01
Naming is different grammatically IMO a new name could deviate from Hell’s Kitchen and be fine
What if they want to name their baby "The Devil's Spawn" ?
Kitchen Hell is a valid name
Up to them, it’s out of scope here, but it’s a bit of a gray area
I think that's just fine. But "Devil Spawn" ?? I'd have to answer "If you want to" and that would be being generous.
userr264896402 is a valid name...
Yes. Well, I'll leave it to you. You get paid the big money as a mod to decide those things.
12:03
I would need the question to include more context to push me to the reopen side of the gray area
But if it's re-opened, I'll try to answer about the "grammaticality"
@JimReynolds I’m leaving it to the community
This is my opinion, not sure where the consensus is, so I’m abstaining
OK. I won't tally that decision against you in the ledger I keep.
@userr2684291 are you laughing with me (+4) or at me (-7) ?
12:05
@JimReynolds lol, my Book of Grudges is extensive so I wouldn’t dream of holding a ledger entry against you ;)
Haha. Well, I guess I'd have to be around more to earn a place. :)
I think we can all agree that "the phone company" deserves the highest intensity of Grugery of all.
And in case I’m the only Warhammer nerd here warhammerfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Great_Book_of_Grudges
@JimReynolds AT&T has been in my book for 20 years, no joke. Right under Time Warner
Wait. Warhammers ... Dwarves ...
It takes me back to my Elder Scrolls days
What relationship do they have?
Are they both kinds of ... games? I don't even know what kind ... fantasy ?? games?
It's sort of like when people ask me what kind of music I like. My answer is "R.E.M."
Warhammer is an ancient tabletop game with tons of lore
Warcraft owes quite a bit to it
It’s got a huge library of pretty good fantasy books set in that universe
There is a fantasy world and a sort of sci-fi world (Warhammer 40k)
Good heavens. you're hard-core. I just feed my dogs and try to be nice to my boyfriend, since he pays most of the bills.
Well, I also have a job
But it doesn't take that much time
At least, it should be re-opened as a question. Then it can be closed as a naming question. You see?
If things are not closed the right way .... shudder
12:17
I agree. Open it so that Jim can answer it, and then close it.
I'm beginning to warm up to you, @userr2684291
I suspect it will get warmer and warmer ... all the way to FIREBALL
Every had a fireball hurled at you?
Yes, I believe so.
Not in real life, though.
Is imagination not real?
12:22
@JimReynolds I mostly just read the books these days, the digital games set in that world tend to be lackluster or straight up strategy games which I suck at lol
Here’s a good introduction to the fantasy side: blacklibrary.com/series/gotrek-felix/…
@JimReynolds I meant in games and such.
@ColleenV haha. The important thing is that we connect with something that engages us
Yes, and I ask: Are games not real-life phenomena?
ok, ok. I'm just so high-energy because I want to avoid finishing a work project. Sigh.
@JimReynolds Ah, I recognize another master procrastinator like me, lol
I am never busier doing stuff than when I’m avoiding something lol
/me looks around, wondering if that command works in this chat
Ah. ok. So, There's a way to do it though, right?
I would just use italics
12:27
Not in real life is just an expression that denotes something you do on a computer or over the internet, I guess, regardless of whether you actually control these actions, even in this virtual world.
shrugs
gets it
was here when IRC was a thing. Missed it completely, but was here. Then was here again when it was sort of a cool retro thing.
Unfortunately you don't get the whole * Jim Reynolds gets it thing, but I think that depends on the client? I haven't studied IRC in detail.
Yeah. I'm sure there's a way here, but I forgot it.
Jim Reynolds hangs his head in shame. Hurls a double-decker bus at @userr2684291, out of affection.

userr253325 slaps Jim Reynolds around a bit with a large trout
I think that's what my client's /slap <user> did.
I still use Freenode occasionally when I need something, though.
(Yeah, I don't give back, lol.)
Alright, I have a project of my own to do.
Bye.

Say someone lends you money and when you return it they say thanks. What is the proper reply for that? It’s not your welcome or no problem or any of the usual replies to thanks.
I know there is a word for it since I’ve used it but can’t recall.
