12:18 AM
@Catija That's cool thanks! Got a P4 myself so...

@CalvT븃 Whatdya think of it?
Thinking of getting a P3S

@Undo Love it. Absolute beauty
I got it for the photography side, which it's awesome at
Although the only nuisance is it's kinda big to take around
If you want it for taking photos on a day out or something, get a spark instead

Spark doesn't seem like a great value over P3S

But if you want semi-professional grade video and photo, the Phantom series is the way to go

By the time you get a controller for a Spark, it costs more than a P3S

12:24 AM
It's portability

and without a controller it only has 100m range, which isn't great
@CalvT븃 yeah

Plus the Spark obstacle avoidance

That seems like the big differentiator. I don't know that it's worth giving up range, cost, and flight time

I do find myself leaving my P4 at home if we have to walk a bit, or are five in the truck (no way am I putting it in the bed)

This'll be mostly a hobby thing, flying around my grandparents' farm or whatever

12:27 AM
What's the range of the P3S?

specced at 1k
Farm would have basically ideal conditions
and I'm US, so no dumb CE limiting

P4 (Original) was rated at 5k I think, but max I've ever got is 3.2
Basically, I'd say if you can stretch, get the Spark. It's easier to cart around, has longer range, similar camera, obstacle avoidance, more up to date tech, etc etc
Only way the P3S wins is lower cost, longer range (spark without r/c), and is a bit more stable in high winds

15min flight time vs. 20+ seems like a big deal, but maybe not

One thing is that at 30% the drone starts shouting that it needs to land
I think @Henders has a P3S - he could comment

aye
and at like 20% it just starts landing
I'm looking at ~$399 for a P3S and all the fixings, or ~$599 for a Spark with controller

12:33 AM
Jun 14 '17 at 9:31, by Henders
Phantom 3

581 for a spark

Ok that's a big difference
I thought it was less than that

yeah

Isn't just a spark $400?

You have to watch Amazon for a while to grab that P3S deal, but it's direct from DJI when they have a refurb unit

12:34 AM
why buy a drone when you could build your own with internal combustion engine for basically-unlimited flight time
/s

@ArtOfCode I seriously considered building a drone
but it looks hard

@Undo definitely won't have aerodynamic and balance issues and break all the time
sounds like a brilliant idea

definitely

Have you checked out racing drones?
They have kits etc

I am kinda excited since I have access to 3D printers at work. Surely I can come up with some kind of thing to hang off the bottom of it
like... say... ESP8266 logging wifi network density?

12:37 AM
@Undo check out Microdrone (I think it's called that?) then

@Undo do a Google. Log SSIDs too, build a location service.

Little drone, you can 3D print the case for it etc etc

or be immature, knock out the lights on the drone and attach a glow-in the dark phallus

@ArtOfCode I was thinking connect to all the unsecured printers and print stuff
maybe you could combine those last two ideas

@Undo "HELLO I AM YOUR PRINTER PREPARE FOR ARMAGEDDON"

12:38 AM
I've got one of those super powerful green lasers - was planning to put that on mine but haven't got round to it yet

...I'm very tempted to pull that on my parents now

@ArtOfCode How about "your printer is insecure, call <my number> for printer security services at a reasonable price"

@CalvT븃 that would probably be illegal
@Undo I want to say that would be illegal too but I can't think of any rule against it

@ArtOfCode Not where I fly it...

@CalvT븃 fair enough. Just don't hit any planes.

12:40 AM
@ArtOfCode One could probably spin it as a public good

with the laser that is. the drone probably doesn't go high enough

They could probably sue for misuse and waste of paper
DJI's have restricts round airports so in theory you can't hit one

Oh no, my 0.02 cents of paper! :)
@CalvT븃 lasers don't care 'bout no restrictions

With the laser I was thinking of point straight down, so shouldn't be a problem

@Undo true, but I still feel like you'd get more callers ranting at you than requesting services :)

12:42 AM
@ArtOfCode You can set the height limit. There's physically not much limit
(it flies just as well in Denver as LA)

@Undo DJI limits you to 500m above take off point
Or 1600 feet

which is an awfully long way up
Legal limit is 400ish ft?

Correct

yeah, 4x should be enough :P

@Undo true, though at some point you're gonna hit thin enough atmosphere that the rotors aren't effective enough any more

12:44 AM
It's an in app setting - set at 120m/400 feet to begin with fyi

Phantom 2 - restrictions started on the 3 :/

Does A mode bypass those?

No
And putting foil over the GPS antenna makes it worse

lol

12:46 AM
As the range is limited to like 30m until you have GPS signal

could probably mess with the electronics and feed it a fake GPS signal if you wanted
might be an interesting project

I bet it'd do something bad

gotta be possible to do it right

Trying to find one, but you just can't get a Spark w/ controller for under $500ish

take the antenna connection out, plug it into something that can record the incoming signal, install your own custom unit in the drone to fake the signal as being somewhere else

12:50 AM
You'd have to be quite specific as the drone reacts based on the input

I also have a possible P3S lined up; local guy on Craigslist selling one for $290. If I can figure out how to evaluate a used one, that'd be awesome

When you move up or down there's a limit on the rate of climb based on the GPS

But new + warranty is probably worth $100

take the signal for somewhere well away from anything it would react to, permanently feed it that with some minor variations

And then you have the listings that start like this....
> Here is a phantom 3 pro for sale. Still runs, has been through alot of shoots. Motors probably need some grease
yeah, you're probably not a good person to buy from if you grease the motors

12:52 AM
Quite

also this:
> I bought this dji phantom 3 about six months ago and have only had time to fly it about 20 times I have wrecked it about three times when I was flying low to the ground didn't hurt anything
sure

Well if you get one feel free to ping me with any questions @Undo
I'm off o/

Thanks! I will

oh hey I start driving lessons tomorrow
well that crept up fast

@ArtOfCode Huh?
I thought you were, like, already adulting

12:56 AM
adulting does not necessarily require driving
especially when one lives in London

Ugh, LHD too. Have fun :P

LHD?

left hand drive
you drive on the wrong side of the road :P

Oh. I think you meant "normal" ;)

I think that UKers should just start driving on the other side and force the issue
it'd be like an awesome civil war
the side with the most trucks wins

12:58 AM
In theory I can drive - have driven - but those were automatics, not on public roads
@Undo I think you'll have trouble there. Most of us like our left-hand drive.

I shall teach you otherwise

Never!

I'll somehow leverage the Brexit divide

but more to the point all the signs are on the left
drive on the right and you won't know where you're going and you'll not get there at the wrong speed

lol
I was thinking more "left hand drive is a remnant of globalist scum, resist the power"
sounds like it might work

1:00 AM
bahahahaha
good luck

brb checking billboard prices
> The average cost of outdoor advertising is around £200 per week
Hmmmm

you may also have to persuade people to adopt the whole US "sovereign citizen" idea, so that they can ignore the police without any repercussions

eh, the US doesn't have a sovereign citizen idea. We laugh at them, mostly.

because that's obviously sustainable
aye
likewise

Anyway, going to learn on a standard?

1:02 AM
but ain't no other way you're gonna get people to ignore the rozzers

@Undo on a standard?
Manual?

aye

Totally
like the majority of vehicles here are manual
so I can learn manual or be an entirely useless driver

that's kinda cool. It's hard to find a manual here because people are lazy totally better

1:03 AM
(disclaimer: not a clue what the actual stats are)
@Undo gimme an old manual Land Rover any day

I usually drive dad's '97 Civic. It's awesome.
and cheap to run. I bought a sun visor clip off Ebay for $0.06. Cheap parts are awesome

I like manuals. I've had a couple. Used to be better for fuel efficiency if you drive them right. But now it seems like most manufacturers only offer the bottom level cars in manual.

by "Civic", are you referring to the small annoying Hondas that are universally driven in the UK by people who can't drive?

@ArtOfCode probably

or is there an upsized 4WD off-road US version :P

1:05 AM

@Undo oh, old Civics
obviously

Anyone up for Contact?

huh?

more commonly driven by 89-year olds going the wrong way round roundabouts

@ArtOfCode to be fair, roundabouts are horrid in every country

1:06 AM
(we may or may not have a stereotype for every vehicle)

@Catija

(some more polite than others)
@Undo eh, I like 'em
more efficient than an all-way stop, anyway

@Undo It's a game we play every week over at puzzling. lot of the regulars are in here

I think they're more common over here anyway, so I might just be more used to it

if you like word games you might like it

1:08 AM
In the US they manage to make them too small. I had to drive the quintessential American vehicle around one, the width of the lines combined with the curves made it awfully uncomfortable.

@Undo yeah, that doesn't help. There's a minimum radius for a full roundabout over here, which helps

Kinda big, but the 16klb towing capacity is awesome. Because we have to move our big stuff around.

If you don't meet the full radius then you put in a mini-roundabout instead and everyone treats it as a free-for-all

@SmokeDetector Is this legit as spam? I don't think so by viewing the content.

oh hey, I think I have a picture of an American vacation car

what is that
here we go

vauxhall something

the ding on the back inside wheel well is from when a deer hit us. There's a matching set on the other side. MURICA

that's not MURICA
MURICA would have blasted the deer out of the way with a huge shotgun
and then run over it for good measure

confirmed
Undo hates bambi, Yvette can back me up on that

1:12 AM
so... technically, there are laws about roadkill. You can get roadkill tags, even out of season, 'cause why waste it. So... we kinda ate it.

pretty sure there's a law here that says you can't take your own roadkill but you can take someone else's
which just gives me the idea of a two-vehicle convoy, the front with huge bullbars and the rear with a huge trailer

good idea
You don't want to bruise the meat too much, though

stick spikes on it as well then :P
definitely road legal

jeez

now you've perforated the guts, which is also bad for the meat
gotta think through these things

1:15 AM
@Undo nah you just have a guy in the passenger seat aiming the spikes for where they'll do the least damage

just buy some darn venison at that point

in fact if you engineered it right you could fit a scoop + ramp on the front vehicle to just throw the animal into the trailer

hey I'm eating here c'mon son

if you tell us what you're eating we could probably tailor the conversation to fit

mmm roadkill pasta
that'll be good with no context in the sidebar

1:17 AM
[roadkill-pasta] would look good in the tag list
