OK I get to have """fun""" designing a DSL for this server thing because I just found out SOCVFinder is actually really complicated and does a bunch of queries against this DB it holds
also the template string was kinda looking clunky anyways

@ArtOfCode Whatcha got?

https://metasmoke.erwaysoftware.com/post/91792 is clearly red-flaggable, but I had my flag rejected because it wasn't spam.

@DJMcMayhem AJ's generally pretty sane. I'm not sure that is red-flaggable, come to think of it.

egads, what is that even
Having a hard time classifying it.

I HAVE NO IDEA
you know when the natural perceptron fails that it's some weird stuff

looks like standard "crackpot with a brilliant new idea"

12:13 AM
but it's science not science fiction don't you know

So here's what I'd vote: tp for our purposes, because I would have zero issue blocking obvious crackpot things at submission, but accept AJ's decision because (1) he's sane, and (2) it is kinda borderline.

works for me

but yeah, that's one of those things that I could come up with awesome arguments either way.

uh

Rails daily pet peeve: it should delete .keep files when they're no longer needed

@SmokeDetector k

@ArtOfCode Can you recommend a good Ruby WebSocket client?

...
I feel like I'm having the same conversations twice with two different people, always about 24 hours apart :)
@quartata faye

@quartata Knowing only how to spell "Ruby" and nothing else about that language...that seems counterintuitive. It's called "keep". Why would you delete them?

J F
1:37 AM
@Andy Git can’t store empty directories, so .keep files keep the directories there until you need them.

1:53 AM
@ArtOfCode Wazzat me?

aye

I was gonna try faye anyways. I just had to go through 4 or 5 other libs first :)
But yes, faye works goodly.
I have heard good things about em-websocket (better for concurrency ... or something ... because it runs on EventMachine). If you can make it work, you're a wizard.
Also, if you're working with rails, use actioncable

That's for server

Oh, client is a whole different story
My personal preference (used in my chat lib) is websocket-driver-ruby with a TCPSocket

I'll use that then

2:04 AM
It's kinda low level, but it works and lets you debug/log at a low level if there are issues.
There are also some eventmachine based clients that I've gotten to work, lemme see if I can find some links for you.

So you open the TCPSocket and then pass it in to upgrade it?
That's nice

You open the TCPSocket then hand it over to websocket driver. Websocket driver works with any IO-like object.

plus if chatx already uses it that's good

I just used it because I couldn't get anything else to work with the threading I needed.

2:23 AM
@thesecretmaster Don't exactly get why you pass self into the driver. What interface am I supposed to implement?

The driver needs an object that responds_to? :url and responds_to? :write. I just chose to make WSClient the class that does that, because then I've got all the WS logic in one place. docs here

got it

@quartata Do you have a repo for your project? Just curious.

no
I haven't finished writing the basics
which is quite a bit

2:45 AM
@ArtOfCode I had a pretty decent idea
So I was thinking about dynamic queue sizes
The way to think about it I realized was how to make the given API quota last for a day e.g. 20,000 calls/day -> 13 calls/minute floored
then if you have posts/minute you do posts/minute / calls/minute -> posts/call
and since the total posts per minute is in the numerator you can break that up into the per-site posts/call
so all we need to do is keeping a sliding window posts per minute average
that's easy enough if we were just dealing with posts but
we've got lots of things we're fetching, some more important than others
what I'm think is we have adjustable quota allocations for each of the different types: posts, comments, edits... that determine that calls/day
Oh I should clarify something
the total / desired calls is the average posts per call
so the queue sizes are like
(per site posts per minute)/(total desired calls per minute)*(number of sites) if I'm not mistaken
It might be better to work with it in hour units
Comments are special though in that they can't be listened for, only polled.
If you're on a set schedule then they consume a constant amount of quota
or vice versa -- the fixed allocation would dictate how often to poll
Unfortunately there's no particular "r/a comment" hour so I think even if we made something that adjusted it wouldn't make much difference
Hmm on second thing being fair isn't necessariy a good thing: SO would have a "fair" queue size of 43
maybe change priorities
yeah this is the wrong angle. I should focus on time between calls, not a fair allocation of calls over a set time frame. that favors the small sites
sorry to bother you

It's an API problem, they need to change their cacheing behavior to stop that
