@tchrist I think the answer right below it is most to the point.

Q: When are of and that superfluous?

Shar BreseharsIn correspondence to donors of a nonprofit, I think use of the words of and that are superfluous. What is your opinion? He is the boy I saw yesterday vs He is the boy that I saw yesterday. This statement could replace all the notes we send vs. This statement could replace all of the notes we se...

This has been asked like ten times by now, and twice just yesterday.

@Alraxite Hmm I had disabled Youtube Center a while before, but I was just testing it, yes.
It does do that too.

Youtube Center slows FF down a lot.

If you wanna see a slow down try Mathjax :(

7:15 PM
You mean Maths.se?

@JohnLawler The worldwide market is craving Syntactic Rules for Dummies, J.M. Lawler, Wiley 2015. Imagine billions and billions served. — tchrist 18 secs ago

Yep, they use it too. @Alraxite

I don't think I've ever noticed much difference in loading times between Maths and other SE sites.

@tchrist to whom will you award the bounty?

@Alraxite Yeah, sometimes, but not always. That's probably why I had it disabled.

7:18 PM
@RegDwigнt The cool thing is how when you dup-close in under 30 seconds since post time, they get a month and a day question ban.
@GeorgePompidou Mister Christian, of course.

@Alraxite By the way, this is funny. It turns out I already had an older version of your Buffer & Audo-HD script installed! I just had it deactivated.

@RegDwigнt It should be closed as off topic.

that person got it so wrong.
Also, it definitely doesn't come from French, and that's not what "il y a" means in French. There is such a construct in many languages. — George Pompidou 29 secs ago

@Cerberus Haha.

Have you @tchrist ever read any of the "for dummies" books?

7:20 PM
sighs

Nope, they are for dummies.

@Cerberus I think I remember reading somewhere that the reason Youtube uses DASH is because of the high bandwidth usage caused by videos being buffered completely but not being watched.
So someone would watch the first few seconds and then close the video.

@tchrist wait what? Is that a thing? Because it should totally be a thing.

Oval Books is a British publishing company responsible for the publishing the critically acclaimed Bluffer's Guide and Xenophobe's Guide series. The books are written by experts on the subject in an off-beat but informative way, verging on spoof. == Bluffer's Guide Series == The Bluffer's Guide to Accountancy The Bluffer's Guide to Archaeology The Bluffer's Guide to Astrology & Fortune Telling The Bluffer's Guide to Ballet The Bluffer's Guide to Bond The Bluffer's Guide to Chess The Bluffer's Guide to the Classics by Ross Leckie The Bluffer's Guide to Computers The Bluffer's Guide to Consultancy...

@JasperLoy and when you say that, that's really saying something...

@Cerberus But of course, that's only true for those who have a high speed connection.

How would you say it @RegD?

@JasperLoy I'd be way more interested in an algebra guide to manga.
@skullpatrol say what?

why isn't there a flag for a question being factually incorrect

@JasperLoy It's actually a manga. Wow.

7:24 PM
@GeorgePompidou there used to be. It was called NARQ.

What you asked jasper @RegD

@Alraxite Oh, do not buy any books in the Cram 101 series.

@skullpatrol I uh. I asked him? I don't think I did...

that there is question has an accepted answer which is clearly made up.
it should be deleted or unmarked as accepted before someone thinks that it's correct.

@GeorgePompidou Pasan estas cosas aun en las mejores familias.

7:26 PM
Speaking in tongues again.

I need a Christiansen Obfuscated Nonsense to English dictionary.

@GeorgePompidou well that's what happens when the accept mark is, by design, in the hands of the one person who is least qualified to award it.

@Alraxite Probably. But then they should improve their buffering algorisms. And should not throw parts that have already been buffered out of memory. Unless it really takes up a huge load of memory?

Algorisms lol.

I think that downvotes and accepts should be done away with.

7:27 PM
@JasperLoy Had no idea this existed!

what are algorisms?

Your mannerithms are really getting out of hand, Cerberus.

I think he meant algorizzims

Al Gore-ism: hating the environment and the Internet

or algoriddims (rasta algorithms)

7:28 PM
@RegDwigнt Now now, not nice to tease those with alternate fetishisms. Whatever gets his ’isms flowing.

@Cerberus Yeah, I don't know why that needed screwing rewind-ability.

@JasperLoy you can make all downvotes and accepts go away by deleting your account.

downvotes are super useful man, shit, eat you some soup

I was thinking that these rewind problems wouldn't be as noticeable on high speed connections. Because I don't see many people complaining.

hugs his downvotes

7:29 PM
It's time for @KitFox to leave the office, bye.

But apparently not. As you make it clear.

@RegDwigнt ˈθɜɹbəɹəʃ

So I'm looking for that image for Mrs Hiny, but instead I'm finding this:

Bye @Jasper Loy

Anyway, this algorithm screws the ones who have a bad connection in every which way. On rewinding, it loses the buffered content. And many a times, people with slow connections will leave a video to buffer. Except of course, that doesn't happen anymore!

7:33 PM
Yes, it sucks. They should take that into account.

@JasperLoy See you.
@tchrist I was young and needed the money.

frets around really angrily about this answer
makes a big fuss with his large hippo mouth

The ones with good speed are probably in the majority of the consumers who watch Youtube. But it's no good for the minority.
Oh well. Hurray this script exists!

7:36 PM
a good first step to making a script work.

are those little dudes not getting pricked by the cactus?

@skullpatrol I was saying bye to her, lol

7:39 PM
I also like to tell Matt to go to bed at 11 pm.

I'll take back my bye then.

Found it.

Some things can't be taken back =)

@RegDwigнt heh yeah

7:40 PM
True @Jasper Loy

@KitFox Hello Ms Fox

is still making a big ruckus
stomps around

@tchrist I have already admired the maintain lion who climbed a cactus, a while ago.

@Cerb so you like his one-boxing but not mine?

7:43 PM
okay okay. is KitFox the record holder for person said hi to the most in this chatroom?

Q: Trauma and Träume

saiI'm aware there is probably little connection between these two words, the Greek trauma, and German Traum, but does anyone know of any connection that may have been explored, scholarly, poetically, etc., whether playing off the homnymic nature of the two, or explaining such coincidence? I know t...

there should be an awards ceremony or something. literally everyone says hi to KitFox.

Hi George.

> Frued

@skullpatrol Tchrist's one-boxing is indeed excessive. But at least it is meant to be new content, to show people things they might want to see or read, not just making a point.
He hand-picked all those links. It's not just typing !!wiki all the time.

7:45 PM
@GeorgePompidou Lynx rufus can clock in at 50 pounds. Not so little when he’s sitting on your face trying to dig his way through you to China.

@RegDwigнt I beat you to it.

The first time I got 1k rep, I was very excited.

@GeorgePompidou I beat him stronger, though.

Excuuuuse me @Cerb :D

that's not fair though, you're a big-shot.

7:45 PM
Also, I had to find the damn close reason.

struts around insecurely trying to prove himself

As I said, it used to be NARQ.

@GeorgePompidou Did you? Did I? No. Therefore you must spend 5 minutes in the penalty box for using Figurative Literal.

Now you have to write up a novel of your own.

literally everyone.
also, I've never seen anyone say hi to anyone else in here.
it's a chatroom, ffs
you don't say hi to people.

7:46 PM
@skullpatrol Well, you wanted my opinion...I must say I haven't seen you one-box excessively in a while, well done!!

you just start talking

Mar 9 '12 at 14:57, by KitFox
A Romanian shark walks into some Germans and says "hi."

@GeorgePompidou Luckily the transcript stands as evidence of your continued wrongness

@Cerb thanks pal :-)

I am literally not wrong.
is totally wrong and jealous too

7:48 PM
You literally over use the word literally

@skullpatrol We all do it sometimes! But I'd want to be told when people found it excessive, if I had no idea.

what does that mean to over use something?

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Someday we shall have gathered enough of those to set them to the Stabat Puer.
@GeorgePompidou Semper ubi sub ubi!

Anyone heard the tenor C sharp in Cujus Animam before?

@tchrist gathered what? evidences? To set them to the .... standing boy?

7:50 PM
@Cerb yes and I said thank you for that.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 well, as George explained just yesterday, any past remark of his is utter nonsense. And since he is in a time zone that is many hours in the past, I am in the comfortable position of discounting as nonsense everything he will say for hours to come.

if I had a nickel for every time tchrist highlights me with some nonsensical series of characters

@RegDwigнt By definition, every remark of his you observe at any time must be in the past.

I'm just 6 hours behind you Reg.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I think he has a more customary name in modern Dutch, one ending in Pis.

7:51 PM
6 hours an idiot...

@tchrist If only I spoke Dutch!

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 exactly. But you're forgetting the many-hours-into-the-future buffer.

@RegDwigнt Future utterances won't be observed until they are past utterances.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Stabat PuerMannekin Pis

7:52 PM
Time is relative QED

I mean, you can't get hung up on all the nonsense you don't observe. There's just too much of it.

hey! that's the only thing in Belgium.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 But I don't have to observe them at all, I know they will be wrong before they've been uttered.

I remember seeing it when I went to Belgium. and nothing else in Belgium

yesterday, by RegDwigнt
Belgium is confusing.

7:53 PM
He himself doesn't even know what nonsense he will produce in six hours. And yet I already know it will be nonsense.
Really quite comfy.

If some crap is upvoted, it is probably done by me, lol.

This too shall pass.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 not hung up. Dismiss. That's like the exact opposite. Very useful.

Como el condor mismo.

Belgium is confusing.
arses Reg

I am confused.

Yep.

can you buy anything with rep?

You can buy some pride?

internet pride?

Dogs and Cats in Rainbow Apparel

jobs are really nice because you can earn money and pride if you do something cool.

8:01 PM
@GeorgePompidou you can buy better answers by awarding bounties

I suppose. good answer.
I trust the community to provide me with good answers without bounty, though.

I am here mostly for the fun.

You can buy the right to talk down to half bright twelve year olds.

I am here because I want to read things about English and cast my votes based on what I think of them.
so you see, mine is the best reason.

@skullpatrol they're not allowed to join the site because of COPPA

8:03 PM
only, I sometimes run out of votes for the day. what is this, a Q&A site for ants?
this aggravates me a lot.
also when people vote the wrong way. how difficult is it to put your cursor on the correct arrow and click?
are people insane?

There’s one with boring graφux but at least you can read the lυrux:

gibt's! that must mean there is comes from German!
I should write a whole answer about that.

Go for it.

maybe I will.

how can I indicate something as off topic if it's clearly someone raging about being made fun of?
I suppose it's the case to literally type out the concern in a comment.
bah. goes to something else

@GeorgePompidou Why you make funny of unglamorous Englitch?

because it's funny.
I do it to my parents all the time.
my mom recently complained to me about how they're not fixing the holepots on her street.
I laughed for like 5 minutes. it's hilarious.

Free decalogues today.

please tell me I'm correct in thinking that question is massively off-topic.

I like the verb to soothe

@GeorgePompidou The question makes no sense.

it's hilarious though. I might just upvote it.
and/or answer it.
never mind. gotta mark it as a dupe.

A: What to do about missing source attributions?

dude, bro, that's so meta.
@tchrist are you saying something about my attributions?

You know, @Andrew, I sometimes wonder how many questions would be rewritten into suitable form if it detected that they were asking if something is grammatically correct and blocked them from doing so with a little popup saying why? :)
This might be a dupe, but I was in a hurry so just answered anyway. Certainly it is general reference, but from what I can tell, people can’t even read a dictionary without handholding and other unmentionably unsanitary acts.

A: Should I use "is" or "are" with "any of X"?

tchristAny: Determiner and Pronoun sg. & pl. Although its origins lie as an indeterminate derivative of one, which is of course singular by definition, any can be used both in the singular and the plural. Per the OED, in the singular, any means: A __ no matter which; a __ whichever, of whatever ...

Not many questions would be rewritten, I suspect. My standard comment might go some way to help (I hope; otherwise it's not helping now).
> Unfortunately proof-reading is explicitly off-topic. Proofreading questions can come in many forms: "Help me fix this", "What's wrong with this", "Are there any mistakes", Which is correct", but they all involve reading a specific text and won't really help anyone else.
> Please identify what you're particularly concerned about, and edit the question to indicate that. It's possible, of course, that there's already a question for it, which searching the site may well find.

10:16 PM
When my next hour is up, the broadcast is gonna stop @skullpatrol. I'm gonna go eat and watch some TV.

Thanks for sharing @GnomeSlice

@tchrist That question is almost certainly a duplicate. If it weren't late I might even have looked for the original.
