3:00 AM
heh
my VIP account isn't much good
I usually try to get stuff on sale and the lego store usually doesn't have sales

Yeah. I guess I'll use it to buy the Haunted Mansion. They still had one on display in the store I was in.

tomorrow there is a grand opening of a lego store near here. i'm going to bring the kids and we're going to help build a giant yoda.
yeah, I want to get that mansion. I would have bought it in new york, but the lego store there had prices HIGHER than MSRP. WTF?

Otherwise it's really not much good at all. I mean, I get my sets at like 30% off, at least, and all of them.

I wish I could get such deals here.
Canada is one of the worst places to live in terms of buying lego. Of course that's like the only drawback of living here.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I'm talking Amazon. Not some weirdo gothic shit.
40% is totally standard. 60% if you have any luck at all.

3:02 AM
Amazon.com won't ship lego here, and amazon.ca has next to no lego on it, and the prices suck.

Is that so.
Well.
My apologies, though not really. Must be good to be me.

canadian lego prices are among the highest in the world, once you account for exchange rates and taxes.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 yeah we had a brief conversation before, or two. I do think Australia still beats you, hands down.

I bought the Theater at FAO Schwarz in New York. The box was too big to bring back on the plane so I left it in the hotel and put all the baggies in my carry-on.

But really, we should be united in our hatred against the US.
May the Fourth promotion, anyone.

3:04 AM
@RegDwighт possibly. They really get screwed on imports all around though. At least we're in region 1 for DVDs so we get cheap movies from the US.
@RegDwighт we had that promo here.
but at canadian prices.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 $99?
Canadian or not, I'd take it.

@RegDwighт okay, I dunno what promo you mean then.

And I can't take a single piece in bley anymore. But I'd take it.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 the B-Wing.
Selling awfully awful, if at all. Around the world.

@RegDwighт oh. hm. don't recall. maybe we didn't have that.

I don't remember, in the condition I'm in.

3:05 AM
anyway it wouldn't be $99. If the US has it for $99 it'd be $140 CAD
if it was even on sale

Anyway. The US got it at $99 on 4.5.2013. We had it at 199 EUR.

You two are like women, except with Lego instead of shoes.

@Cerberus so you're saying we're better than women. Carry on.

I'm almost sober btw.

That's enough carrying on for my tastes. I'll take it.

3:07 AM
So how can Lego be more expensive here than across the pond?
Or is that an exception?

I just stormed a party in the middle of the night, with two friends. We knew nobody, nobody knew us. We just walked in. Everyone was like twenty years younger, too.

How/why did you get there?
You dirty old gate-crasher!

@Cerberus Lego is cheaper in the US because they price it lower there. The US has it way cheaper than everyone.

@Cerberus because here in Good Old Europe, everyone already is into LEGO and knows its value. The US still have to be convinced. That's why they get all the crazy promos, too. Like that X-wing in the Times Square.

@RegDwighт which I missed by two days. FML

3:09 AM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 But why?

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 that's still way more luck than I can ever hope to have.

@Cerberus they claim the market is more competitive.

@RegDwighт Is that it? But then why are electronics like Iphones also a lot cheaper there?

It boils down to: in other countries, people are more willing to be gouged.

That's not a serious theory.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Who claim that?

3:10 AM
no, that is the theory.

@Cerberus because iPhones suck, and LEGO doesn't. What is the question?

@Cerberus Lego does, in their official communiques on this topic.

If anything, the EU market is harder on Apple products (they're less popular here).

Also, so do other vendors.
it is a common topic here in Canada, where we feel continuously insulted by prices that seem higher in Canada for no reason.

Anyway. Excuse me for three minutes while I write down my CUUSOO stats for the day.

3:11 AM
How can a market be more competitive for something like Lego?
There's only one Lego.
@RegDwighт Granted.

@Cerberus But there are other toys.

There are other toys everywhere.

And the market might be more competitive for toys in general. as in, the retailers just don't feel that the toys would sell at all at canadian prices. But canadians are polite enough that we submit to being gouged.
@Cerberus yes, but your other toys in europe are also higher priced.

Uhh...
The whole "gouged" thing doesn't make sense.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Are they?
If so, why?

Relatively speaking, toys in europe and canada just cost more, across the board, than in the US.
@Cerberus because those are the prices that the market can bear.

3:14 AM
Only some brands appear to be cheaper there. Many others are cheaper here.
You're speaking in tautologies.
The question is, why?

@Cerberus There may not be a reason. Or the reason might be, retailers in the US have had more competition, and have driven prices down.

Wow, five supporters today. It's been a good day.

Apple sells far fewer Iphones per GDP per capita in Europe than in the US, and they're still a lot cheaper there. If our market is so competitive, then why not make them cheaper?

@Cerberus No, it's the US market that's supposedly more competitive.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 This whole competition thing is still begging the question.

3:17 AM
@Cerberus No, not necessarily.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 The market for Apple cannot be more competitive for them, because they buy more Iphones in the USA.

Let's say you have a market with relatively few sellers. prices might stabilize at a certain point. but if you have a market with more sellers, or sellers that push for lower margins, etc, they can drive prices down. it depends on the sellers.

If it were more competitive, they'd sell fewer Iphones.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 That is only sometimes applicable to this situation, and only for some products.

No, the market is more competitive, so in order to do well they price it lower. anyway you can't compare the phone markets. the predominant business models are different.

But they are doing worse here.
So they should make Iphones cheaper here.

3:19 AM
I wish I could go to bed. But I'd be dead in two hours. So I'm off to watching Breaking Bad instead.
The last three episodes of Season IV.

What would happen if you went to bed now?

@Cerberus yes. except that apple wants to be seen as a premium brand. also they might not be successful everywhere.

@Cerberus Dehydrated gets a new meaning in dictionaries around the world, that's what.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Then, at best, they should use the same price here as in the USA, not a higher price.

Isn't it like night in Canada, too?
I mean it's tomorrow here already.

3:20 AM
@RegDwighт 23:20 here

@RegDwighт You get more dehydrated if you go to bed too soon? How does that work?

@Cerberus when I'm asleep, I can't drink, that's how.

Oh, OK.
How much do you plan to drink, then?

It's not like I'm a noob here, you know. Not at this one thing.

@Cerberus they do it on a per-country basis. they price it compared to how the other phones are priced. the iphone is one of the most expensive phones on the market here. it should correspondingly be so there too.

3:21 AM
Can't you drink it in half an hour?

@Cerberus three grams of salt. Something like that.
So a frigging lot.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 But I think Samsung phones are usually more expensive there than here.

also phones are different than, say, toys. lots of local laws and restrictions and blah blah blah. actual costs of products might differ quite a bit on a country-by-country basis.
@Cerberus samsung phones are usually subsidized here. so it doesn't matter...

@RegDwighт And you read this in which Russian almanac?

the subsidies are usually bullshit numbers too.

3:22 AM
@Cerberus I'll see about that. One Breaking Bad episode is like 45 minutes. That should be enough to get me down to acceptable levels. It's not like tomorrow is a business day or anything. I just have to be up by 18:00 o'clock.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 But I'm talking about unsubsidised phones, obviously.

@Cerberus I read it in my Russian brain. Thirty years of first-hand experience. They don't sell that in almanac form.

@Cerberus yes but the market for unsubsidized phones here is virtually nil.

Salt, huh?
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 There still is a market.
And it has prices.

only the iphone is popular as an unsubsidized phone.
@Cerberus yes but it's not a healthy market. it's not a responsive market. It's just an afterthought.

3:24 AM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Then why make Iphones cheap and Samsung expensive in the USA??

@Cerberus iphones are not cheap in the USA. they are like $600.

@Cerberus yeah. Many people make the mistake to think it's just H2O. It is not. Kalium, calcium, sodium is where it's at.

the iphone and the GS4 are like the same price.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Still, a hundred thousand smartphones must be sold unsubsidised every year, or some large number.

Happy iphoning. I'm breaking bad. CU around.

3:25 AM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 As I said, that is a lot cheaper than here.

Ouvert et haut !

@RegDwighт What do you base this on?
Tell me on the morrow.

@Cerberus I can't say what fraction of the market is unsubsidized but my guess is it's like 1-5%

Bai!
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 So a hundred thousand phones is not that unreasonable.

@Cerberus yes but you are claiming that there is some weird pricing happening. there isn't here: the high-end phones are expensive. they are correspondingly expensive over there.

3:26 AM
sigh

@Cerberus I dunno. It's still a small chunk of the market. and those won't all be high-end.

Look.
Iphone in USA: $ 600
Iphone in Holland: $ 800+
It's a big difference. It's not some small arbitrary variation.
People instruct relatives to import them when they visit the USA.
There's something odd about it.

@Cerberus experience, as I said. Plain and simple.

Especially considering that other phones are often more expensive in the USA, not less.
@RegDwighт Not because you read it somewhere?
Three grams is an awful lot.

@Cerberus Yes, it's a big difference. In fact it's comparable to the other price differences I see whenever I compare US prices for stuff to Canadian prices for stuff.

3:29 AM
When you drink a whole bottle of vodka once, fuck that. When you drink the equivalent of a bottle of vodka on five occasions, you will start noticing a pattern. When you drink the equivalent of a bottle of vodka five times a year, every year, you just know your shit. Simple as pie.
Peace out.

As for why other phones are more expensive in the US, that's probably because the market for unsub phones is so fucked. I bet the carriers insist on high usub prices in order to make the subsidies seem better. Whereas apple plays by their own rules.
Consider lego prices. The dollar is at par, but the same set costs $149 USD or $199 CAD.

Okay, not all phones are more expensive there: the Galaxy S4 is more expensive here, but the difference is a lot less than for the Iphone. And other Samsung phones are often cheaper here.

What could possibly explain that extra $50?
The explanation is that Canadians buy it even though it costs more.

I suppose the phone market is indeed too fucked up in America to be a fair comparison, although the Iphone prices are still odd.

whereas americans wouldn't pay that. or else they would, but the retailers are afraid that they won't.

3:33 AM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Could this not be a remnant of how the Canadian dollar used to be worth less than it is now?
So you're used to higher prices or something?

@Cerberus sure, it could be that. but wouldn't that also be the case for Europe? you're used to a phone being whatever price it is, so the fact that that makes it 30% more than the US price is irrelevant.

We were never used to the price of an Iphone. It was a lot more expensive than other phones.

incidentally the iphone 5 is $649/$749/$849 USD.
@Cerberus perhaps. but Apple products are always expensive.
lots of apple products are way more expensive than the equivalent non-apple product.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 It is 800/x/x USD equivalents here.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Yes. But they are facing a lot more competition here. And losing the game sooner, too.
But now we're running around in circles.
I remember my friend had to buy cheap Uggs for his sister too when he went to NY.
So there are many brands that are cheaper there, but not all brands.

@Cerberus incidentally, I found Manhattan prices were not that good. almost everything was more expensive than I expected. Even starbucks coffee cost more there than in Canada.

3:39 AM
Macs are also more expensive here.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Haha, of course: city centres are the most expensive areas eva!
Don't count on buying a small bottle of water under € 5 in Paris. That's $ 7ish.

@Cerberus I was shocked, because I expect to pay US prices when I go to the US, but I was seeing worse than Canadian prices.
but I did get some "cheap" lego, by paying full US price.

The tourist shops in my neighbourhood are the worst ever...

only at one store though.
anyway I should get going.

Well, I would expect franchises to have the same prices across the country?
OK good night.

@Cerberus nope, guess they don't.

3:41 AM
No?
Are you sure?

What shop was it?
You know shops often sell stuff cheaper online, right?

yes but for some reason many many US places don't ship outside the US.

Tell me about it!
I'm just saying, the prices we are checking now on the Internet are not what any American pays in a real shop, probably.

anyway it was almost everywhere we went, we saw stuff that was available in canada, but was no cheaper in NY. Whereas I've been to other places in the US and the stuff IS cheaper. I think it's just Manhattan: high prices.

3:43 AM
If it's the same franchise, that is outrageous.

@Cerberus well... maybe. for the stuff I usually buy: phones, and lego, the prices don't vary much online unless there is some kind of sale. But again, the sales don't reach canada.

Are you sure it's not just that the more expensive franchises are present on Manhattan?

@Cerberus I'm pretty sure that most US starbucks are cheaper than canadian starbucks. but not in Manhattan.

That would be interesting. We should ask someone in the US who knows Starbucks prices outside Manhattan.
Maybe I can find a receipt...

@Cerberus we didn't do a franchise-by-franchise breakdown of all the stuff we saw. But the NY Rockafeller center lego shop had prices higher than lego MSRP. I've never heard of that before. A lego shop selling stuff higher than lego's own MSRP?
The Toys R Us in Times Square also had prices higher than MSRP.
Other things, like clothes, were no cheaper than canadian stores. Or DVDs, or other electronics. I didn't get the idea that there were any deals to be had. But I've been elsewhere and seen stuff way cheaper.
but as I said, I should get going. ttyl

3:46 AM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 What's that abbreviation? We buy Lego in regular toy stores.
OK bye!

@Cerberus MSRP: manufacturer's suggested retail price
so lego sets their price, and their own stores usually sell stuff for that price. except in NY.
bye

Ah.
OK bye!
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 That is strange indeed.
Then it must be true for Lego stores at least.

4:42 AM
@SȱɳɨȼƮħeǶḝÐɠḝħȱɠ No problem, none at all.

2 hours later…
6:33 AM
Hey, anyone home?

6:47 AM
Hi!
I'm about to go to bed...

hey
so
I'm trying to not sound repetitive while listing reasons for something
I'm in the process of writing an email and the group of sentences start with: "also... additionally... plus... as well... and..."
Is there a way to connect the sentences in a way that separates the reasons from each other but still ties them together towards the main point?

@Walkerneo I think you would normally do something like this:
> Here are my reasons. First, you were mean to me. Secondly, you stole my bike. Thirdly, you are an idiot. ... Lastly, you are ugly. For those reasons, I cannot collaborate with you any more.
3
Now I'm off to bed. Bye!

7:04 AM
haha
brilliant - good night!
my only qualm is that it sounds too formal for a personal email

@Walkerneo You could also just not mark the reasons at all. You were mean to me. You pushed me. Your sister dislikes me. You are an idiot. So I don't want to see you any more.
Although I think it's fine to use "First" etc. in an informal e-mail if they make it easier to parse...
Alternatively, you could make a list:
1. Tuesday is not a good day for me.
2. You can very well do it alone.
3. Mary told me she didn't expect me to be there
So why don't you just go to the meeting alone?

7:20 AM
:) well, the first thing you suggested works for terse sentences, but when the reasons are long and can span multiple sentences, the separation isn't clear

7:37 AM
@Walkerneo Then I would just split the reasons, each into its own paragraph.
Start each paragraph with "First" or not to taste.
Nobody likes a text wall!
Especially an enumeration of longish arguments lends itself well to multiple paragraphs.

Hi
Do you think Computer science course nowadays produce more coders instead of programmers?
In my CS course, majority of subjects are about website development or smart phone application development. Those subjects were almost like revision for me because I already have learned all those topics in my leisure time

I haven't taken any courses yet (just finished HS), but in my experience, I'd say the reverse
the college grads I've worked with seem to have had more experience taking classes which didn't teach them the things directly relevant to the work we were doing, even though they seemed to have expected that to be the case
That is, they were expecting courses in web development, programming, etc. and instead were treated with courses dealing with more abstract concepts and didn't have much interest in taking them

@Walkerneo What are examples of those things directly relevant to your work?

Well, just real-world experience programming. Looking for bugs, structuring code, setting up development environments, working with libraries. I'm sure their courses were more geared towards teaching the concepts and abstract ideas behind programming

hmm, rightio

7:53 AM
If you're just starting out, I'd say what you're experiencing is probably the colleges' attempts to "hook" students in by offering the courses that get them excited about computer science. I guess smart phone and web development are two major reasons people are currently interested in computer science
well, I'm off to bed too.
good night
I hope you find the courses you enjoy!

I think the reason why colleges offer so many web dev and smart phone application subjects is they have higher chance of getting them a job (30 k / year)
As a result, colleges can maintain their reputation of
"they have large number of employed grads"

5 hours later…
1:07 PM
sena krappar

1:21 PM
WTF, why do we have not one but three "how to learn English" on the front page?
@Cerberus very handy tips right there. I would like to add one more.

What does Marsellus Wallace look like?

1:45 PM
Pulp Fiction don't remember but something about a misunderstanding that MW enjoyed being fcked.

Did you ever notice that Numberphile looks a lot like Simon Pegg?

never heard of any of them

2:19 PM
Simon Pegg
Numberphile
QED
The beard kind of screws it up, but you get the idea.

yep looks like father and son at least

So CR wants to get rid of us, @reg

1 hour later…
3:28 PM
@RegDwighт Okay, your answer wins. How's your hangover?

4:05 PM
@Cerberus I don"t have one.
Which was the whole point.

Well done!
Neither do I.
And all I drank was tea and a moderate quantity of water.
Tea with milk, of course.

Is there any political debate on the internet to speak of in your countries? I mean between politicians.
I find TV a problematic format for debates.

Q: Is EL&U declining?

Carlo_R.The Barrie England's last answer date May, 4. The coleopeterist last access on EL&U date Mar, 26. Even the Robusto's last answer date Apr, 26. Jasper Loy has deleted their account on EL&U. Others high-rep users, who has made EL&U great, seem ghosts of themselves. Questions asked are systematicall...

Classic.
I am sorely tempted to answer "because you haven't been here enough".
Kinda of the same temptation as wanting to drive into the opposite lane of a highway.

4:20 PM
yes, quite similar

you get that itch a lot?

I have a cream that takes care of it when it flares up.

good man

@JohanLarsson I'm not sure what you mean? Politicians debating about a certain topic exclusively on the Internet? I don't think so?
Oh, wait.

@O0oO0oOO0ooO Whoa, whoa, whoa dude... there's a difference?

4:24 PM
Do you mean "a debate about the Internet", or "a debate taking place on the Internet"?
I think the former?

@Cerberus yes or any topic really.
Debate taking place on the internet

Ah OK.
I don't think so? Why would they do that?

@Cerberus by politicians talking -using- the internet. or about internet/global information technology issues themselves

@Mitch Yeah, exactly. It appears Johan meant the former.
Are you thinking of politicians debating on a web forum or something?

TV lends itself to rhetoric and intellectual dishonesty. If that is correct English

4:26 PM
@JohanLarsson Oh.. yeah..why would they care? Sometimes they give youtube video statements, but that's the politician's staff setting that up. Politicians talk to each other bhind the scenes, they don't want to discuss things in public.

@JohanLarsson Perfectly correct.

and the internet -doesn't-?

They do all send out Twitter messages, too.

@Mitch I'd say no, on TV all you need to do is dodge a question for a couple of minutes because it must move on.
@Cerberus yes exactly, I even sent out emails suggesting a format to 'valmyndigheten' and a couple of others

there is a lot of intellectual dishonesty and rhetoric online

4:28 PM
ok true but I still feel it has potential

@JohanLarsson What are valmyndigheten?

I think Valmyndigheten administers the democracy in Sweden. I sent my suggestions to a couple of randoms and some big discussion boards.

4:42 PM
Ah, the guys who make sure elections go as planned.
And who declare the winners.

@Mitch My original comment was "and you think getting rid of the mods is a first step"?

4:59 PM
Hi
Everyone
@MattЭллен Is "Hold on on this" common in contemporary English?
@MattЭллен Google Books doesnt seem to turn up many results.

@Noah What is it supposed to mean?
Hold on to this?
You would say that to a drowning sailor after tossing him a life buoy.

Yeah.
To mean: Wait up on this.
Or wait on this.

As in "wait for this"?
Then you would just say hold on.
Or maybe hold up?

5:15 PM
No
Not wait for this.
You wait for someone or something.
Wait on this= To postpone this

I can't think of a time when "hold on on this" would be used.

?

"wait on" tends to be used in conjunction with waiters
but it might have become adapted to be used to mean "wait for"
I've not heard it used to mean postpone

> I'll hold on on this road till you come in. Have received orders to that eftect from head quarters cavalry forces. About noon, my advanced parties having been driven from the Opequon, I was attacked by a division of infantry
Oh, I think I am mixing up two things.

I would read that to mean "I'll try to wait on this road until you come"
although the try is implied, because of the advancing enemy

5:22 PM
That's what I thought. So the use of Hold on on this plan could also be used.

@Noah That's slang, I think. Not to be used in formal English.

@Noah not really, unless they're in the process of executing the plan and even then it would sound odd

@Noah Note that this text has numerous other mistakes. You shouldn't trust it for grammatical correctness.

Okay.

To hold on should not be used in combination with a physical location, I would say.
You can wait on a road, as in, you can wait at a certain place, but you don't normally say you hold on at a certain place.

5:25 PM
Right.
But how would you say: Wait on this plan for now?

So you can say, "hold on!", to mean "wait!"; but not "hold on on this road".

@Cerberus in a combat situation "hold on" would work, although "hold out" would be more usual

@MattЭллен Surely you wouldn't say "hold on at the river's edge"?

yes. "We'll try to hold on at the river's edge, but the enemy out number us 4 to 1"
but as I say, it's more usual to use "hold out"

Oh, but then it means "to keep your position without succumbing to the enemy's attacks".

5:28 PM
assuming the river's edge is somewhere you can dig in

Yeah, identical to "hold out".
But that's not what Noah wants: he wants to use it as in "hold on!".

@Cerberus oh, yes, sorry I didn't realise you were talking about "to wait" although the meaning is similar

@Noah You could say wait with this plan, or postpone this plan?
@MattЭллен It's all a bit of a confusing mess!
@Noah Or you could say, put this plan on hold.

you can say "hold off" to mean postpone

That means, "pause your execution of the plan".
@MattЭллен Right!

5:34 PM
sorry, I mean "hold off on"

Right. But hold off can be used without on?
Hold off firing her for now.

oh, yes, that makes sense
It think it sounds weird with a plain noun, though
*"hold off that plan until we have the money"

I would still use hold off on that plan...

@MattЭллен Hmm I think you're right. Maybe not impossible, but certainly not as common.
@Noah "Still"? It's fine, though colloquial.

5:39 PM
So you think *Hold off that plan..." is correct?

If so, hold off on is certainly better.
But I think something a bit less informal would be even better, like put that plan on hold (still slightly colloquial).

5:59 PM
You could also back-burner the plan.
