12:00 AM
They favour Israel over Palestine, but they are moderates.

@George are you new or just a new skin on an old friend?

The latter.
Although far from ancient.

@Mitch Yes.

Presumably one of the leaders of the pro-Russian rebels in Odessa.

@RegDwigнt And I do appreciate it.
@Cerberus We're harboring war criminals?

12:07 AM
The underside of his lower arms says "Blut und Boden".

@KitFox Well, I'm here.

Hi @Gnome.

Do flag wars count?

@KitFox Who are "we"? He is not necessarily a war criminal anyway.

@KitFox Hello. :)

12:07 AM
I saw you earlier.
@Cerberus EL&U chat. And I thought all pro-Russian rebels were war criminals.

You did indeed.

I also listened to some music on the way home that made me think of you.

@KitFox Showing a picture is not harbouring, but sure... why would all pro-Russian rebels be war criminals? Some no doubt are.

Can't remember what now, except that I was going to ask you what was that mashup again?
I may possibly have been consuming a small amount of alcohol earlier.
@Cerberus Why do you have pictures of George? And how do you know he's a war criminal anyway? Are you in cahoots?

Umm that is not George.
It is completely unrelated.

12:10 AM
@Cerberus You said he was a pro-Russian rebel!

sighs

You said he was a new skin on an old friend, though far from ancient, and that he was a rebel.
It's right there in the transcript.

How likely is it for a Jewish native speaker of English to be a pro-Russian rebel in Odessa with a swastika tattoed on his arm?
You have one hour.

I have no idea. You're the one who said he was. It is rather remarkable, but you do often make remarkable claims.

Drunken moderatrices. shakes heads

12:12 AM
glowers
You're the one making crazy claims.
@GnomeSlice Maybe Ronald Jenkees?

@KitFox What about him?
Oh, didn't see that message.

That might have been what I was listening to what made me think of you.

Yeah probably, I've probably linked him in here before.
He's awesome

@GnomeSlice pretty good

@GnomeSlice Also, I have a dubstep channel on Pandora that I seeded from suggestions of yours, I think.

12:17 AM
Excellent.
@KitFox You should give this a listen: labrat00.bandcamp.com/album/labrat-bootleg-bundle
Labrat is the shit
some good dubstep/glitch hop/trap stuff

I will check it out while I'm working tomorrow.

I can start posting my daily music stuff in here if you like
I stopped doing it in the bridge, but I still do it in the meta.se tavern.

Sure if you want. Actually, I bet @Johan would dig that too.

yeah!

I have a station with some Trentemoller seeded in it from his suggestions.

12:20 AM
For the month of august I'm just posting mixsets, so it will be pretty much exclusively electronic stuff.

Cool. I like electronica and ambient, especially for working.
Dubstep is nice for waking me up.

@KitFox phaeleh posted a sweet selection of his ambient tracks for free today phaeleh.bandcamp.com/album/somnus
I didn't even know he did ambient, but it's pretty good.

Oh love that.

Also re: ambient, I just discovered a pretty great label on bandcamp: ultimae.bandcamp.com/album/elsewhere

I'm using MiKTeX right now. How funny.
I like the opener. I'll give it a try tomorrow.
Thanks, @Gnome. I am going to have a supremely sublime music day tomorrow!
Well, and I'm working from home, so w00t!

12:24 AM
Happy to share. :)
I need to clean out my bandcamp wishlist

Do you have anything new?

368 items, jeez.
@KitFox Lots

What's your current favorite?

@KitFox huh?

Tough call.
Might still be this actually: fearofdark.bandcamp.com/album/motorway

12:26 AM
@GeorgePompidou I was wondering if you were someone I knew, but with a different name and hippo, or if you were just new, the brand-spanking kind.

Chiptune though, so it may not be your thing.
@KitFox do you like Glitch Hop?

I am sometimes in the mood for chiptunes.
I don't know if I like Glitch Hop.

@KitFox I'm not so much into spanking but I can be whatever.

I prefer Vine Whip over spanking.

12:28 AM
hahaha

why was that my first reaction to a sentence with spanking in it

Because me.

anyway, I'm probably nobody you know.

And I do know you.
You're just trying to be sneaky.

@KitFox pretty much anything in my bandcamp collection that I wrote a review for is particularly good.
I was listening to this one nonstop for a while: dancewiththedead.bandcamp.com/album/out-of-body

12:29 AM
OK. I look forward to digging through it tomorrow.

:O
really?

Was really into the retro revival sound for a while there.

Reminds me of Nine Inch Nails and Devo.
Like they had a crazy love child.

@KitFox Which?

Dance with the Dead.

12:30 AM
At risk of being ridiculed, I don't think I'm familiar with either of those groups outside of knowing the names.
Never really bothered to listen to them.

Oh. Now I feel old.
You might possibly like Nine Inch Nails. Trent Reznor.
Devo is 80s synth pop.
Whip it.

I saw Devo at Lollapalooza a few years ago.

All the genres makes me feel old.

they gave me a hat.
and my friends also received hats from them.
very nice guys.

Hats are nice.

12:33 AM
@GnomeSlice It might appeal to your electronica side.

peculiar cylindrical step hats

My dad likes Devo.

I do not know the word for this shape.

Or at least he's talked about them a few times.

NIN was a big deal back in the day, but probably wouldn't rock your world.
@GeorgePompidou Nobody does.

12:33 AM
and I am a secret hippo.

Sort of like Joy Division. You'd never heard something like that, it would be "holy shit" but these days, it's "meh".
Classic Devo.
Classic NIN. [NSFW] On account of nudity and f-bombs and disturbing imagery.

@KitFox Ah yeah, I get you. This is pretty dece.
Heh, that vid though.

Yeah. Weird.

@KitFox That was pretty good as well.
That vid though.
@KitFox I'da been banned for that, heh.

Have you seen any of Tool's videos from Aenima?

12:45 AM
@KitFox this maybe
@KitFox Nope.

If you like weird videos, those are really good.
Let me find one.

My turn:

Sober. Good example. I used to have all these on DVD.
@GnomeSlice Dude. Fucking Aphex Twin.
Weird. Ass. Shit.

Yeah.
I was never a huge fan of Aphex Twin to be honest.
I just love showing people that video.

I always wanted to be, but I'm just not that cool.

12:51 AM
writes notes on previous incense stick and lights a new one

@KitFox This reminded me of this.

I got a free incense sampler in the mail ^.^

OK, now ima have nightmares. Again.
@GeorgePompidou Sweet. I like that stuff.

Eep, sorry.
I should finish The Void
Extremely interesting game, but far too difficult.

12:53 AM
Nah, it's cool. I like it, it just scares the shit out of me.

Also has a ton of tits

Tits are good.

and a lot of disturbing imagery

If they are reasonably realistic tits.
And not part of the disturbing imagery.

it's Japanese. eastern hippo

12:54 AM
The Void is Japanese? I thought it was Russian.

No, there's all these sisters which are these naked women you talk to in various places. And then there's the brothers, who are all fucked up crazy abominations like the guy above.
One of them is a giant wheel with faces and arms sticking out of it
@KitFox Yeah it's russian

no, my incense.

maybe I shouldn't onebox that

Lovely and totally unrealistic.

The game on the whole is pretty surreal
It's also kinda old at this point.

12:58 AM
That poor girl has obviously eaten way too much commercial beef.

Ava had the best tits anyway.
Also one of the girls looked exactly like the sister of this girl I knew in college, it was really weird.
I should get the lower difficulty mod and finish that game.

They don't actually curve like that, is the thing.

@KitFox Magic limbo boobies.

That's obviously drawn by a guy who has to draw from clothed models.

Heh.

12:59 AM
Well, she is cute though. Definitely my type.

A lot of them are 'covered' like that.

It's the lines. Boobs don't have lines like that. They aren't stitched on.

But anyway, yeah. Tits and fucked up body horror.

Sounds interesting.

Back to music vids, this is one of my favourites:

1:02 AM
I'll have to watch it later. I've no headphones.
@GeorgePompidou Is all of it Japanese?
What is it like?

I see.

good evening

Hi @Mr.Shiny!

I see it's weird-shit-in-chat night
2

Yes. Yes it is.
56 mins ago, by KitFox
I may possibly have been consuming a small amount of alcohol earlier.

er, probably shouldn't post that one either.

But I'm so glad you did. Of course, I can look at history.
So it's the best of both worlds.

They have clothing in the promotional art but they're all totally nude in the game.

The women almost all look alike.
The artwork is really interesting to look at.

Yeah the game has excellent art.

1:10 AM
It reminds me of Alice only less, I dunno, polished.

It's older, I think.
Not sure actually.

Probably not older than Alice, maybe older than the sequel.
The original was built on the Doom engine, I think. It's pretty old.

Yeah, The Void is from 2008.

Alice was 2000.

I guess there was a version of the game where they're clothed.
Interesting.

1:12 AM
@KitFox probably not the Doom engine. That's ancient.

Madness Returns was 2011. Very pretty game.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Quake 3 engine. My bad.
id Tech 3.

speaking of doom engines. Did you ever finish (re-)playing Heretic?

I had it out just this past weekend.
I am trying to get Doomsday to run on Win 8.

oh. new machine?

But it seems I need to get a new video card and probably new monitor.
Old machine, new OS.

1:15 AM
Heretic is out on Steam now.

It was sitting for a while too.

Along with the Hexen games

@GnomeSlice Yeah, I bought the bundle a year or more ago.

@GnomeSlice The problem with the Steam variants is that they didn't fix up the game engines very well. So they don't really work.

Yeah, that's what I figured.

1:16 AM
At least, I couldn't get Quake to work from Steam.
I had to download DarkPlaces and point it at Steam's Quake data files
So yeah, you can buy the game. But just like if you had bought it when it was new, if you want to play it now on modern setups be prepared for some fiddling
Possibly you could get Heretic to run in some kind of DOS box
emulate DOS, and the old game just works
But let's be honest. You want to use the mouse. Nobody plays FPS games on PC without mouse, not since forever.

That's essentially what the Doomsday Engine does, it seems.

So that means getting a new game engine.

I don't play with a mouse. Is that weird?

Yes. Very weird.

I feel like it interrupts the experience.

1:18 AM
My only reservation about using the mouse with Heretic is that the game is actually too easy.

You mentioned.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Did you play it on nightmare mode?
@GnomeSlice OK, I'm tired of naked chicks now.

Yeah me too
That's the last of them anyway

Oh.

Also the blank stare is kinda creepy.

It is a bit creepy.

1:21 AM
@KitFox shrug

@KitFox I don't think I'm playing on nightmare. That mode is just silly, the enemies respawn continuously.
Anyway, time to jet. bye

See you!

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Peace.
My internet is crapping out.
Gah.
My home internet is so bad.
At least I'm living somewhere else now.

Is that working out for you?

Seems to be.
I got a job.
Putting my college degree to good use, got a job at Winners.
huehue

1:27 AM
Winners. That sounds so...ironic.

Oh well. First job. It's only part time, so I hope I can get enough hours to be able to stay at the new place.
@KitFox Yeah it pretty much is because it's an off-price department store.
So it's for cheap shit.

@GnomeSlice True that.
I am off to work on some writing. Later!

See ya!

2:17 AM
@KitFox Chiptunes?
Which kind?

1 hour later…
3:26 AM
Is it just me, or do Asian non-native speakers really ask for “formal” versions of things, or for something that can be used in “formal” situations, about a googolperplex times more often than non-Asian non-native speakers do — and if so, why?
I have worked with Western pineapples plenty, and I simply cannot recall them ever asking me for formal versions of things.

3:44 AM
@tchrist Possibly you are thinking of Japanese or Korean speakers who have a multitude of politeness registers?
And are looking for an analogue in English
*I'm guessing about Korean - I don't know if they have that

I just notice a huge whole lot of requests for formal versions of stuff on ELU.
But yes, I wonder whether it is related to that.
I might be wrong, but I get the idea that most of them asking are subcontinentals, not Japanese. There are a lot of Chinese learners, too, and I haven’t really tried to bucketize the askers, so maybe they’re part of it and maybe they aren’t.

Well, I don't really know. I'm pretty sure Chinese doesn't have a politeness thing like Japanese does.

I would not be completely surprised if Koreans had something of that, but like you, I don’t know for sure. I have been to Korea long ago, but that was on the back end of a trip to Japan, so things may be muddled in my mind.
I do remember them “correcting” me for doing things “one just does not do here” in Korea, silly things like taking stairs two at a time.

heh
That'd be annoying, getting corrected for things like that.
Look. I'm white. I'm in Korea. I'm taking stairs two at a time. DEAL.

I confess I thought they were teasing me, making a joke.
So I laughed.
This was not the right reaction.

Then there was the time we were walking to a restaurant that had a huge parking lot full of empty parking spaces not full of cars, because we were going there mid-afternoon. When I tried to cut the diagonal through the empty lot, this too drew their correction.

A family I knew moved to Korea for a few years when I was young. They came back telling stories about how people on the subway would come up to them and touch them, like to see if they felt different. Things like pulling their arm-hair to see what it felt like, etc.

It just “was not done”. So I had to come back and join them and walk the long way around. Very silly.

@tchrist wait, walking?

Yes.

3:52 AM
They MUST have been having a joke at your expense.

I don’t think so. But there were lots of things like that.

oy. I'd go in. sane.

Once I wore a shirt that had some dark purple in it.
They told me that this was a girl’s color, like flaming pink, and that I would be misunderstood for having worn it.
Dark purple != flaming pink
Apparently boys aren’t allowed to wear purple there. I should have been an old woman, I guess.
It was NOT fricking lavender. Close to navy, a little bit purplish.
I got really tired of being told what I wasn’t supposed to do.

Yes, I encountered at least half of those.
I did feel they (20something salarymen, of an age with me) were being way more affectionate that I was comfortable with among an allegedly straight crowd. I had plenty of arms wrapped over my shoulder on drinking nights.
And then there were the hostess bars. Gorsh.
And the idea that prostitution was ok because you were away from your wife and so naturally needed servicing of a man’s needs and that she would understand really creeped me out.
I was definitely a stranger in a strange land there.
I also had a friend who was studying Chinese and Chinese culture. We compared notes, and he really made a point of showing the quiet Japanese closed-form politeness base on overpopulation in a tiny island coupled with an old caste system as being opposite to the way Chinese people were, having a big country etc etc etc.
I’m unable to tell how valid any of that was.

4:10 AM
Well, China's had lots of different upheavals that change things like how various people are supposed to interact. So whatever they have now is really a mishmash of what the Communist Party made plus the palimpsest of the older democracy and the even older Imperial period

The Cultural Revolution sure did make a mess of things.
Loyal to the Group of Seventeen

4:33 AM
Well, I gotta run. ttyl

4:45 AM
gbyze
(gone be your zombie eyes)
Does pronuncificationalistically have ten syllables or eleven?
And why do I keep wanting to stress the last syllable? :)
Answer: because it’s in ¹²⁄₁₆ time.
Or 12/16, if that’s too hard to read.

5:06 AM
hello. I've read this comic, but I don't really get what the joke is. What is it? can I ask it here?
http://explosm.net/comics/3332/

5:55 AM
@tchrist I believe Japan is 60+ percent forest...
Only places like central Tokyo are notoriously overcrowded.
But not the archipelago as such.
@Malky.Kid I'm sorry, I don't get it either! Except if the D stands for "dick" and the O depicts a vagina...but even then I don't quite get the joke.
> ...large swaths of the population subscribing to classical anti-Semitic notions such as Jews having too much power in business, being more loyal to Israel than their own country, or "talking too much" about what happened during the Holocaust.
Not sure I would call those opinions anti-Semitic.
It is a big word.
It is true that they are negative about Jews, but those opinions not the same thing as saying "Jews are bad news in general".
If you feel that men should have less power in society than they have at the moment, does that make you anti-masculine? What if it is based on misinformation?

1 hour later…
7:37 AM
@Malky.Kid It's basically a joke based on the turn about of expectation. It's not based on some facet of English, so it's not appropriate to ask the question on the main site.
@Malky.Kid Dude says to Jimmy that Jimmy's mother wants Dude's dick (D being short for dick) Then (shock!) Jimmy reveals the his mother is dead. Then (shock!) Dude reveals that he knows this too. The final panel shows a text from Jimmy's dead mother, which is a winky face with a halo. That's the whole joke.
so the humour relies on knowing about two humour/banter tropes: 1. "your mom" type jokes where one person makes some lewd or insulting suggestion about another person's mother (e.g. that Jimmy's mother wants to have sex with Dude). 2. The subversion of said joke where it is revealed that the mother in question is dead, followed by the instigator implying that having sex with a dead person is what they wanted all along. (e.g. Dude saying "I know")
This second trope is further subverted by saying that the dead mother in question actually consents and is in contact with the instigator.

8:12 AM
There is a big forest fire going on in Sweden, it is close as I can smell the smoke now.

!! should you be running, not chatting?
unless you can do both

Not much forest here so pretty safe
Strange that the EU does not share a defense for this
Would make a lot of sense if every country contributed with x planes and staff

Yeah, but getting sense out of politicians, and getting civil service deptartments to coöperate...

Yeah, simple becomes tricky :)

8:31 AM
No wind today so it will not spread as fast.

A: sentence starting with for

JudithYour explanation is the same as the questionable sentence. In both cases it would appear that a new sentence has been innaugurated due to the length of the preceeding sentence which might have included the sentence in question, but for its length. For when sentences become unwieldy, it is common...

WUT?
Seriously, that's like a new record in not having anything to do with the question...

It seems to be saying much the same thing as the good Prof. For is a conjunction. (Condensed into four words)

> Your explanation is the same
What explanation?
> In both cases
What cases? There is but one.
> The word 'for' or 'because', though not proper
Not proper???
It's a train wreck.
And who is Inna Ugurated?

The president of the USA?

9:33 AM
Nah, he's a moslem, moslems don't call their children Inna.

Yeah no, Ultra HD required. While most potato-chip bags these days are filmed with a potato.

my VM is too weak to install pandoc
this makes me so sad
wait, let me modify that
i can install the binary pandoc package
but i can't compile it from source
not enough memory

sounds like you need more memory

not really possible
unless i can rent it for a day or so somehow

it's an AWS machine

Amazon Wizard School VMs get expensive if you need more memory?

10:59 AM
i should see if i can increase its allotment to 1GB for a day or so
they aren't expensive at all. mine is free most of the time.
last month i paid $10
