@RegDwightѬſ道 Not by that name, no. They used to have tallér, which is from the same root as dollar.

I used to be taller too

@MrShinyandNew安宇 It takes just one of those 100-ruble notes to make an impressive roll.

@RegDwightѬſ道 — You misspelled "rubble" ...

@Robusto Aye, there's the misspelling.

3:04 PM
Speaking of which, why isn't this guy on the 100 Rubble note?

Copyright

That never stopped a Russian before.

How would you know?
You're blowing your cover.

11 mins ago, by Robusto
@Marthaª — Sssshhhhh! I don't want the Chinese to know about it.

@Robusto Why does he have only 3 toes?
4 toes I could understand...

3:10 PM
@MrShinyandNew安宇 because you see it all the time?

Hold Robusto responsible! We're waiting for an answer!

@MrShinyandNew安宇 — Why do the Simpsons only have three fingers?

@Robusto That is your question about the Simpsons???

Why do the Na'vi in Avatar have three fingers, except for Jake when he is in Na'vi form? Philosophers have pondered questions like these for millennia.
The truth is, no one knows.

Huhuh, he said pondered, huhuh.

3:15 PM
They have tridactylia

That's only a label, not an explanation.

It's a sceince wurd so u no its true.

Y u rite upostrofee?

Cuz its the furst wurd in the wurds.

@RegDwightѬſ道 — Y knot?

3:18 PM
@Robusto That teks alot uv currydge.

You misspelled alot've.

@Robusto The simpsons have 3 fingers and a thumb, just like barney does. But usually that means 4 toes, not 3.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 — That sounds racist to me.

Maybe he lost them in a freak waterboarding incident.

3:19 PM
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Wow, that... took quite some time. Obviously you did lots of research.
@KitΘδς Why would you waterboard a freak?

Who do you waterboard?

@RegDwightѬſ道 Actually I was trying to do some work. like.. the kind I'm paid for :) I should get my boss to pay me to chat on this site.

OK, here's the truth: sometimes toes and fingers get lost when cartoon characters go through the analog-to-digital converter.

@RegDwightѬſ道 to find out what it knows

@KitΘδς I waterboard the accusative case.

3:20 PM
@Robusto What race is barney? I thought he was a neanderthal. Not even the same species as me! Despite what some women may have claimed!

@RegDwightѬſ道 Whom do you waterboard?

Is it racist if you dislike people from another species? or speciesist?

That Ariel, she's a waterbroad

@MrShinyandNew安宇 It's called "stupid."
@MattEllenД thwack

@KitΘδς Well, it may BE stupid, but it isn't CALLED that, surely.

3:22 PM
@Robusto Sounds plausible.

in War Metal Tyrant, Aug 6 at 3:10, by RegDwight Ѭſ道
I just hate everything everywhere at all times ever. Makes life much easier.

@Robusto Ah, the answer! I guess they should up their sampling frequency

@MrShinyandNew安宇 — Sampling size is important, too.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Also, they should change the name so it doesn't abbreviate to ATDC.

@MattEllenД — She's so watery they changed her to a font and spelled her name Arial. Prospero was like soooo pissed when he found out.

3:24 PM
@RegDwightѬſ道 I'll bite. what's wrong with ATDC

@MrShinyandNew安宇 The second letter, duh.
Angus Young does not approve.

@RegDwightѬſ道 I thought that might be it. I was hoping it'd be something... more.
more funny. or more incomprehensible.

I just realized English anagrams to Shingle. Maybe that's our problem.

@Robusto deadly!

And you can't spell "usage" without USA!

3:27 PM
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Oh, there is more. The correct second letter would be an A, and it should be in the third position.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Well, in electronics ADCs are called ADCs, not ATDCs.

But you can spell it without Russia. Totally.

@RegDwightѬſ道 Now you're being silly. The second letter by definition can't be in the third position.

Hell, you can't even spell Russia without USA.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Whose definition is that?
@Robusto I can't even spell Robusto without a bus.

3:28 PM
@MattEllenД — Hey, pardon me for trying to dumb it down so that non-EE types would understand it.
@RegDwightѬſ道 — A "bus to" where?

@RegDwightѬſ道 The dictionary's definition

@Robusto If you spell it ATDC it sounds too much like AC/DC. And, well, that's just too much rock and roll for EE

@Robusto You know where. That river.
The Ob River (), also Obi, is a major river in western Siberia, Russia and is the world's seventh longest river. It is the westernmost of the three great Siberian rivers that flow into the Arctic Ocean (the other two being the Lena River and the Yenisei River). The Gulf of Ob is the world's longest estuary. Names The Ob is known to the Khanty people as the As, Yag, Kolta and Yema; to the Nenets people as the Kolta or Kuay; and to the Siberian Tatars as the Umar or Omass. @MattEllenД — You misspelled IE. Other browsers hand'e rock 'n' roll just fine.

@MattEllenД But not for Civil engineering. At University of Toronto they have a "rock group".

3:30 PM
It's telling how two thirds of Rob's name are a Russian river.

@RegDwightѬſ道 — You misspelled "rushin'" ...

Ur Boost.

@Robusto You are not fooling anyone with your fake chicagski accent, comrade.

@RegDwightѬſ道 — It's pronounced Chicaga ...

@Robusto "it" is not.

3:32 PM
@Robusto My grandfather used to say "chicargo"

The noun has a schwa, and the adjective is as mentioned.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 — He misspelled Clutch Cargo.

@Robusto hm. I won't rule it out.

Ahh, the good old days of one-frame-per-minute animation.

@KitΘδς I share your esteem for our colleagues in this room. ((hugs))

3:36 PM
@MattEllenД — I figured you for an esteempunk fan.

@Robusto thwack

@Robusto esteempunk: "How does this thing fly?" "It's powered by ego!"

No. "Esteempunk" is just how Spanish native speakers pronounce "steampunk" ...

speaking about russians, i wait for appearance of trg, he is so funny-even unintentionally

Turkish native speakers would pronounce "steampunk" as "sateampunk".
@BogdanLataianu He's not a Russian, though.

3:39 PM
@RegDwightѬſ道 — What a bunch of turkeys.

I remember an episode of Astroboy where there was a robot leader who was literally powered by popular opinion. If the population got angry at him he ran out of juice.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 — That's not fiction, that's real. It's called polling.

@RegDwightѬſ道 he's bielorussian... not much difference

@BogdanLataianu Yeah, much like American and Puertorican.

@BogdanLataianu — Speaking of which, I'll have a White Russian too.

3:45 PM
gods this day is going by slowly

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Stop rewinding, then.

@BogdanLataianu just as there is no difference between romania and moldavia, right?

@JSBᾶngs I liked ameRICAN and puertoRICAN more.
Besides, everyone knows that Romania and Moldavia are only two different countries thanks to Stalin.

@RegDwightѬſ道 One of those things could come in handy sometimes. But sadly I have none.

Wikipedia doesn't even recognize Moldavian as a language.

3:49 PM
@MrShinyandNew安宇 You need War Metal Tyrant.

@RegDwightѬſ道 — It's not even a consonant.

@KitΘδς What's that?

@RegDwightѬſ道 it's not, really. they don't have a big enough army+navy, unlike ELU

Hello again

3:50 PM
@rumtscho Hello.

@RegDwightѬſ道 and we have so many things to thank Stalin for, that people sometimes forget this one

Hi @Grace!

g'morning newcomers

I have another 2 hours of battery life out of another 7 hours journey, so where could I spend it but here :)

3:51 PM
@Grace it seems like you change your avatar every other day

Hi... uh... KitTH... and I can't do the rest of that.
@JSBᾶngs This is the same Gravatar I've had for two weeks now.

@GraceNote i saw you with a different one on meta.english just today

@GraceNote Try Kit Thuds. It works for some.

@RegDwight I'm glad you liked the article. I got it from longform.org. I don't like everything they choose, but some of their stuff is remarkable.

Kitthuds. Got it

3:52 PM
Do I possess your heart yet?

@JSBᾶngs I like to think there are no differences between moldavia and romania...but anyway trg even if he hates russians he is soviet union nostalgic and talks frequently about russian culture

@JSBᾶngs I'm just saying that the difference between Romania and Moldavia is that between BRD and DDR, or South Korea and North Korea, not that between Spain and Italy.

@KitΘδς I kinda need it to live, so I hope you don't.

Not that one.

3:53 PM
@rumtscho, wait, didn't you change your name to something completely unpingable?

@RegDwightѬſ道 all true. but i was under the impression that byelorussian was largely the same as russian. is that not the case?
as a linguist i should know these things

@KitΘδς Oh. Then no, you don't possess it.

@JSBᾶngs It's not mutually intelligible, no.

@JSBᾶngs Wait, you're a linguist?
@GraceNote I will re-double my efforts.

Countdown till someone mentions "cunning"... 3... 2... 1...

3:54 PM
@JSBᾶngs Yeah, what's a linguist doing on this site? I mean, ew.
@RegDwightѬſ道 I don't think they dare while I'm here.

Totally.

If you were to look at Meta English now, @JSB, you'd see that I still have that image.

@RegDwightѬſ道 I was going to say it... but didn't want to get thwacked

@Marthaª well, i mean, i have a BS in Linguistics. But the actual work i do has nothing to do with linguistics. i'm a software developer by profession

@Marthaª Orly?
Jul 28 at 15:47, by Kit
@Fx I have been accused of being a very cunning linguist.

3:55 PM
@JSBᾶngs BS is right.
Ha ha ha.

@RegDwightѬſ道 I wasn't present when that was committed.

@RegDwightѬſ道 it's poor form to count down to yourself repeating the cunning linguist joke

Hey, I have BS in everything.
@JSBᾶngs I didn't count down to myself. I counted down from myself.
Besides, I really was worried.

@RegDwightѬſ道 See?
1 min ago, by Mr. Shiny and New 安宇
@RegDwightѬſ道 I was going to say it... but didn't want to get thwacked

But as you see, everyone's afraid of Martha.
Jinx.

3:57 PM
besides, who other than a linguist uses filthy language like "laminal denti-alveolar obstruent" ?

@Marthaª I changed the name for my EL&U account to румчо. Then logged out of chat and logged in back with my Cooking account, which I never touched.

@JSBᾶngs Stop BSing me!

Here, have a... dammit, I've got no sodas around here. Will a niece do?

@JSBᾶngs And with that, it's time for lunch.

Nonononononono no niece.

3:57 PM

Awww....

@RegDwightѬſ道 Too late. :þ

@KitΘδς Finally! who's buying

@MrShinyandNew安宇 I'm cooking.

3:58 PM
@Marthaª No, saying "No" before is not too late.

TTFN.

@RegDwightѬſ道 It wasn't before. The image was already uploading.

Strange stuff getting flagged.

i marked that invalid

Wait, why did I just get notified that somebody flagged something? I'm no mod.

4:00 PM
@Marthaª Whatever. You have killed the room now. Good job.

because srsly, wtf?

Ooh, it's got a second flag now

It's lunch time in my timezone. later folks...

I'm out, too.

There's another flag.

4:01 PM
"bloody"? did that get flagged for the word "bloody"?
stop with the flags, pplz

"look at the bloody calendar". How is that offensive?

I think I know what it could be

@Martha as i learned some time ago, once you have over 10K system-wide you're considered a lay mod, and will get chat flags

There was a user who visited us once in Cooking, and said that he is usually hanging out in EE.
Barely speaking english, quite incoherent. The online equivalent of the crazy old man who sits beside you on the metro train, muttering to himself.
He gave two flags to completely innocent messages by our mod, which caused a reaction by practically every mod online. That's when I met @RegDwight for the first time, he came over to Cooking.

4:17 PM
Hm, when was this incident, out of curiosity?

in The Frying Pan, Jun 20 at 21:31, by hobodave
@JohnLopez you haven't formulated a complete sentence since you've joined the chat. Do you need help with something?
@GraceNote It looks like it happened on 20.6. (It's nice how chat keeps track of it for me).

@rumtscho Ahha. Time format I took too long to parse.

@GraceNote OK, sorry. I use dates the European way. But the message itself has it too.

@rumtscho Haha, you don't need to apologize for something like that. Thanks, though. ♪

NP. And if you want to know what a real facetypist sounds like, it is that one:
in The Frying Pan, Jun 20 at 21:18, by John Lopez
HI Runtsch hi

4:28 PM
@rumtscho There is no "European way" for dates. You seem to be using dates in the bass-ackwards British way. :)

@Marthaª I couldn't read a single English word when I started using dates this way. But I think they are common in most parts of Europe.

the european way is more logical, as the elements are in an increasing order of size day > month > year

Hungary and a few other sensible countries use year-month-day order.

At least it is somewhat sortable. Not as nicely as Japanese, but not this terrible mix of Big and Small endian Americans use.

@Marthaª That's how I prefer it.

4:31 PM
@Marthaª this is also sensible. what is not sensible is month.day.year that americans use

Spanish dates are Day Month Year.

hmmm, i think it's lunchtime
l8r

@JSBᾶngs Oh, I agree. I mean, I use it, because I grew up here, but whenever I have a choice (in filenames at work, for example), I use y-m-d.
@JSBᾶngs Jó étvágyat!

@Marthaª I prefer this one on computers, actually. That's what I call Japanese. Still nicely compatible with day.month.year, because nobody mixes them up (at least with yyyy).

@rumtscho Precisely. Plus, it sorts nicely.

4:33 PM
I regularly get duped by m/d/y dates, although I theoretically know what to expect, especially when I see a slash. m.d.y. (with dots instead of slashes) is the most insidious one.

If you need to state a date without a year, it's best to use the name of the month rather than a number. 20.6 just doesn't look like a date to me.

@rumtscho Dots are hard to parse.

@Marthaª You're probably right, I'll make a habit out of it if I remember until the next time I have to write a date.
@KitΘδς Why?

Windows won't recognize the file extension properly if you include more than one dot.

@KitΘδς Citation needed?

4:37 PM
No? As in 2011.08.09.doc?

that file will have a DOC extension in Windows 7.

What I meant is that dots are traditional in Europe (or at least the parts which write texts I can read) and slashes in America. So I always read 5.6. as the fifth of June, and, if I remember to, 5/6 as the sixth of May.

@rumtscho American date format is retarded. Why do they always have to be different (and wrong)?

@rumtscho Citation needed. We use slashes in Italy.

@badp The last batch file I wrote to import data.

4:37 PM
Germans use dots

@badp Not so in XP? I thought it always took the part between the last dot and the end as the extension?

@KitΘδς .tar.gz files perhaps? :)

Spanish dates use slashes as well

@Cerberus then it would be still .doc

At least, to my recollection, they did. Maybe they don't.

4:38 PM
@badp It's like you are reading my mind.

@badp That's why I used a qualifier. I don't read much texts created in Italy. But thank you for the warning, I may need it.

@rumtscho Yeah we don't use dots in Holland. Either dashes or slashes.

@badp Except that they also included the date and some other tokens.

@KitΘδς Well, it's a tar inside a gz :P (afaik)

Guys, I'm really worried about Spongebob. :(

4:39 PM
@badp Ah OK, so no problem.

@z7sgѪ This is a curious concern.

I think he might be in trouble.

@z7sgѪ What, did he participate in the riots?

People, I slowly feel obligated to start a community wiki about date separators. The way you keep feeding this information to me and all.

...wait... what?

4:39 PM
Or are those rioters carrying him off?

@Cerberus Looks like he's been taken hostage or kidnapped or something!

4:40 PM
@z7sgѪ Then we must liberate him!
Unless he is their leader.

@KitΘδς I heard about that incident

@GraceNote Police shot somebody. They said he fired at them. His friends said he didn't. Oh, and he happened to be black.

Yeah not everyone likes a heated discussion, our bad.

That was fun last night for a while but it was quite a stormy discussion.

@rumtscho Oh. Wonderful. Where was this?

4:41 PM
Hence the riots.

@KitΘδς Wanna relive it?????

@rumtscho I heard that it turned out he hadn't fired at the police?

Suddenly lots of blue meanies appeared and broke it up.

@badp I thought I was going to have to slap you.

aww, I would've put it to 1 second. :/

@Cerberus The amount of information in the media I read was rather insufficient. I can't claim to know it was one way or the other.

4:43 PM
@Cerberus Tbh I was about to go to bed anyway and I was tired of the argument by that point.

@rumtscho Gotcha

@rumtscho I read it on some news page today, I think; but I only glanced at it, so perhaps I missed some essential details.
@z7sgѪ Understandable.

I like to discuss liberalism and religion and so on but with cool heads.
Though you know we should have simply created a new room early on. Cos I think the people being offended were bystanders.
I certainly didn't flag anything!

@z7sgѪ Sounds like I missed a good show.

@z7sgѪ Absolutely right.
And I wasn't really emotional, nor I think was Jez; we were just fiercely defending our respective positions.

4:50 PM
i dont think we should offended by religion discussions

I agree.
But the taboo subjects of our time are quick to offend people.

@BogdanLataianu The problem is, it's people who don't think at all who get offended by abstract discussions.

Well, it wasn't entirely abstract, and certain harsh things were said. But in a pleasant atmosphere for the participants.

@Cerberus Abstract in the sense of not concerning a practical matter like "You just ran over my foot"
