not if they develop it by clean room procedures

What about when I have a question about something I've never done before? I can't use the code verbatim, but between three posts, I compile a workable solution. Then, I clean it up a bit. Do I have to cite those three posts?
What if they only contained a description from the documentation without any code?
(You know that SO comes up higher than the docs in the search results.)

If this goes into place, that could make for some very polluted code after a while

Not really, because the current CC-BY-SA requires the same attribution (as best I can tell, someone correct me if I'm wrong).

What happens when the item is obviously common knowledge among a group, like my integer input in Python post?

#ItDepends

I was reading the Python 2 questions, but I was working on Python 3. Turns out it was a very simple fix that has several posts linked as dupes.
Do I have to cite my own Q and the accepted A every time I input an integer in Python?

Zak
Personally, Unless I'm literally copy-pasting from SO (which basically never happens) I don't see the need for attribution in the first place. And even then, very little on SO is advanced/complete enough to be considered *not* common knowledge.

Well, @200_success has capped on the big meta for today.

I didn't even have to write anything. I would have capped just on the attention drawn to my previous answer.

I think the non-"quote" is good too.

I had to write something dramatic to emphasize the fact that it's such a huge culture shift.

If this goes through, I'm going to start a competing site as soon as I can.

9:16 PM
I'm honestly not that upset by the license change.
It looks like they're trying to make it more compatible with other licenses.

My site's license will be that the users are signing all rights away by posting, but I will encourage users to cite things anyway.
(With that license, I can't see it succeeding.)

Is there a rep-cap for negative, as well as positive?

My U is having caching problems.

I wouldn't be so upset if it didn't also have the potential to decimate Code Review.

What about it would decimate Code Review?

9:19 PM
The MIT License is more of a "give code away freely" license.
I don't think it's appropriate to expect people to give code away just to discuss it.

And how is that bad for CR? You think fewer people will post if it means their code is much closer to public domain?
(I post all my code with the idea that it's public domain anyway.)

People who write FizzBuzz and linked lists won't care. People working on corporate projects could care very much.

Ah, there is that.

I don't think people working on GPL-licensed code could post it here.
A lot of RD is GPL licensed because of the ANTLR parser.
Posting under MIT would be re-licensing, and GPL code can only be licensed under GPL, if I understand correctly.

I only have one repo on my GitHub which isn't MIT licensed, and that's because of a third-party module.

9:23 PM
We licensed what we can of RD as MIT, but at least one project is GPL because of the parser.

Not just the license. The fact that code is singled out as different from the surrounding content is a dangerous idea.

I can understand where that would be frustrating.

That too. I want my code and text all licensed under one license.

@200_success I wonder how that would affect posts that contain both a "pseudo algorithm" written as text, and a code part, written as code.

Since you have a working answer already, and you haven't identified any shortcomings in your solution that make it unsuitable for you, this is a better fit for CodeReview. — Rex Kerr 37 secs ago

Q: Sorting a list in python so that x != x+1

maikelnaitBasically I need to order a list, so that an element is not the same as the element that comes after or before it. For example [1,2,2,3,1,3,3] should come out as [3,1,2,3,1,2,3], [3,2,3,1,2,3,1] or [2,1,3,1,3,2,3] and so on. I searched for a solution but couldn't find one so I wrote this functi...

@Insane It works based off the HTML rendition of the post, that is, if text is changed within <pre> or <code> tags it notifies us

Right. Keep in mind that text that is marked-up with back ticks or 4 preceding spaces at the beginning of a line in a post gets converted to HTML, in case you didn't know

@Phrancis All content gets converted to HTML.

@Mat'sMug do you know of a way to set up Excel so that when you copy a cell it doesn't also copy a line break with it?

night @zak

Zak
@Phrancis Move the line break? Just a thought

Huh?

Zak
Oh, sorry, line break
I read it as page break
What do you mean, exactly?
A line break within a cell? Such as what you get using Alt+Enter?

I often find myself using Excel to hold data that I afterwards copy/paste into another program (usually SSMS or Notepad++)

It's just annoying to constantly have to remove the new line it created

Zak
The way I'd do it is to find and replace all line break characters chr(10) with regular spaces chr(32)
Otherwise, you can always investigate the looong list of Paste Special options
There's probably one in there that'd do the trick.

Ah yeah, those
"Paste Special -> Transpose" is possibly one of the best features of Excel

@Zak Apparently they actually use the term "Downstar" on the 19th byte

Zak
I'd probably just use a function like so:
=SUBSTITUTE(CellRef, chr(10), chr(32))
Resize so it covers all your existing data
then paste the values back over the original
Chr() for VBA, CHAR() for worksheet functions

10:13 PM
Wouldn't that be a circular reference?
Or would you use this function in a separate set of cells?

Zak
separate set of cells
So if your data's in A1:F10

Ah, didn't work though... oh well

Zak
I'd put the functions in H1:M10

Looks like Excel actually puts those in when you copy it to the clipboard, rather than them being a character in the cell

Zak
Try Find and Replace All
Find: Ctrl+J
Replace: whatever you want
And with that, I actually *am* off to bed this time.

Okay, have a good night :)

A: The MIT License – Clarity on Using Code on Stack Overflow and Stack Exchange

200_successIn essence, this proposal is to move from a copyleft license (CC-BY-SA 3.0) to a permissive license for code.
