Q: Forge Server and Client can't connect

Ashley Marie RobertsI have installed the Forge Server and Client for version 10.13.2.1291. The server and the client both boot up fine, but when I try to connect to the server is gives me the following error: java.net.ConnectException: Connection timed out: no further information: I am running the server on Ubuntu...

@Ben SUPER late reply: I build Gundam models.
I should build one of my kits this weekend.

Hello friends

hi @GnomeSlider

Q: Let’s improve our site navigation

SklivvzA.k.a. the 2015 Questions to Answer Refactoring Konversion (QuARK) A.k.a. the great cheese move of 2015. TL:DR; we are looking to change the navigation of the question lists on the site. We are not looking to remove any functionality or break any existing link. This is not final. We’re taking...

Work is done

Gonna need to make a translator for @GnomeSpeak
Exactly
17:13
horn==job
slider==spider
burger==??
shake==sake
I'm not quite sure how job becomes horn
we really should add gnomeslice's autocorrect woes to the meta meme thread
Just deal eight it
Deal eight? We playing cards?
17:16
Google should add an "Autocorrect" translation along with Klingon and Pirate
No
Yes that works he idea
That would be ideal

Microbe rag
@Unionhawk you should expect that, we're the fridge
@fredley Doesn't mention the Firefox bugs at all
#noneedtowait2minuteswhenusingfunkyphone
@Unionhawk That's not really as bad as it sounds. The long name makes it obvious that enabling it is a bad idea
17:20
What is that #alwayswait2minutes thing about anyway
@GnomeSlice after 2 minutes, only mod abuse can edit a post
@Chippies Well he had it coming. The cat was making it very clear that the dude's feet were smelly.
I've seen it in other places I thought
@OrigamiRobot cats love smelly feet though
so perhaps they weren't smelly enough?
Only certain smelly feet.
17:21
@GnomeSlice idk in that case
@Unionhawk wat
most likely the cat just didn't want to walk around, but still wanted to pass
Point is, the cat was communicating as best it could.
@fredley YEP
Or he was just locked
17:22
Be considerate of the cat in this situation: you were in its way
AKA: poorly

Honestly, the dude was probably making some sound that the cat hated.

@OrigamiRobot That's totally the cat playing.
Bela does the exact same thing.
you're just going to start doing this on purpose at some point
Why does my phone correct to wang
I love @GnomeSlice's funky phone
17:24
@GnomeSlice phone autocorrect usually learns and corrects to commonly used words by the user
user15026
@GnomeSlice Perhaps type slower, and check before pressing enter?
@GnomePhone for Lifehack mod
@fredley Though, as they said, if they're already modifying configs like that with reasonable precision, it's probably over whether or not there exists a disable security preference.
It doesn't help that I'm on the busty

user15026
I tried.
What happened?
17:27
@AshleyNunn and that's all that matters!
You. You happened.
@rapitor that explains why it keeps wanting to autocorrect to shit that doesn't even make send
Sense
Protip: read the messages you're about to send before sending them
I don't understand why people even use autocorrect in the first place
No wait, don't, this stuff is hilarious
user15026
17:28
@fredley I already tried that suggestion
I have never heard anyone compliment autocorrect
@Chippies I use swiftkey, that sutff is great
user15026
@fredley I love Swiftkey
@Chippies Why would they? The only time you're going to comment on it is when it's wrong
@fredley I use Swype.
17:29
I used to not use it but my phone typing I'd do bad everything just comes out bullseye
@AshleyNunn SwiftKey is the best
SwiftKey makes some interesting corrections sometimes though too
So many keystrokes saved
Like, I type a word, and it decides I want a different word
BULLSEYE
17:29
@Yuuki Swiftkey is a superset of swype
user15026
@Unionhawk sometimes, but for me it is very rare
Bull shut
I tried Swype forever ago, I hated it
@fredley Something something something is a superset!
I use the default Google swiping keyboard
17:29
1 min ago, by fredley
Protip: read the messages you're about to send before sending them
Bull shitttttttt
user15026
@GnomeSlice teach your phone to understand curse words. I had to. :P
@murgatroid99 I hate the way it looks for whatever reason.
@AshleyNunn then it can start autocorrecting benign words into curse words instead!
Haha I usually only text my dad and I don't curse in those revs
17:30
@cloudymusic want->wang
@OrigamiRobot I hate the way you look
user15026
@Chippies I hate swipe type keyboards but since Swiftkey works either way, it's great
Swype is the best. I can absolutely butcher the word I'm trying for and it still gets it.
Swiftkey > Swype
Swiftkey > Swype
17:31
@AshleyNunn sooo, what's the benefit of SwiftKey if you use it as a regular keyboard?
Fixed it for you
Swiftkey predicts the word I'm going to type next, and I can't cope without this functionality any more
The only problem is there seems to be another autocorrect function fighting for control
Swype errors are catastrophic though
28 secs ago, by fredley
Swiftkey predicts the word I'm going to type next, and I can't cope without this functionality any more
17:32
@Unionhawk but then you can just backspace the whole word and try again
user15026
@Chippies really good correction and prediction - you can let it "learn" from your email/social networks, if you want, and it pays attention to corrections/predictions you pick (or not)
I find that keyboard with prediction just makes me focus on what words it's offering me, rather than actually typing them
Most of the time, I don't have to type at all with SwiftKey
Like, at least swiftkey can maybe guess kind of what I want if I fail, but swype will just throw unrelated words and a lot of times I won't notice until it's too late
17:32
At most I have to type the first three letters of a word
user15026
and you can tell it RIGHT away not to predict a thing for a chosen set of characters
I don't know what SwiftKey is, but I know it didn't come pre-installed on my phone whereas Swype did. That's pretty much all the convincing I need.
by the time I pick out that the word I was offered is the one I want, I could have finished typing the word already
@OrigamiRobot IE came pre-installed on windows machines...
I miss physical keyboards on my phone. Like the early gen androids.
user15026
17:33
@Chippies I don't use it for prediction as much as correction
@Batophobia Confirmed: IE > all other browsers
@Batophobia Yea, and I actively had a problem with it. I don't with Swype.
user15026
And it is really good at understanding the butchery I make of words
@AshleyNunn that makes sense, I don't trust auto correction thingies though
@Chippies trust but verify
17:34
@AshleyNunn This. Even on 'precise' mode it knows what I'm trying to do
user15026
@Chippies I usually hate them, but since this one attempts to learn your style and words/phrases you use often, its greaty
But green of words is like what autocorrect is debug to do appetizer
5
I HIV up
5
it also doesn't help that last time I actually used texting was in Latvia, where I would be typing in different languages and auto correct is the worst with that
user15026
@Chippies oh yeah, that gets tricky
@cloudymusic but I can tell if I make a mistake if I'm paying attention to what I'm typing, if I allow auto correction, I have to re-read everything
user15026
17:35
I use the Russian language pack on Swiftkey and it handles my terrible russian pretty well. I don't use it much (because I am still a very much beginner at Russian) but it works nicely
also, red squigglies are easier to notice than properly spelt words that aren't what you want them to be
@Chippies SwiftKey has pretty good language support
@AshleyNunn TIL you speak Russian
@fredley 1) probably requires switching languages 2) doubt it supports slang
@Chippies Slang support for British is good, and it learns from your typing anyway (past and future)
Whenever I try to say "don't" on my phone, I always get dint with a red underline and a white drop down menu for corrected words.
@fredley in Latvia it's common to mix latvian, russian and english words into your vocab
That is not Swype's normal behavior.
i.e., you let it access your texts, it learns how you word
I have no idea what's doing that.
@Chippies It can learn this
17:37
@Unionhawk This is the biggest problem with the ISPs.
@fredley so can default google keyboard, afaik
They're willing to reap the benefits, but they don't want the restrictions that go with it.
just add everything you use to dictionary
@Chippies So manual
No it isn't
17:37
@Frank that's pretty much all business entities
Swiftkey -> tell it to read my texts and work it out. Google Keyboard, I'm assuming you have to add each word as you type it.
Hmm, it's not doing it now. Maybe they fixed whatever it was in some update.
@cloudymusic Well, yes, but it's rather hypocritical of companies to do so.
user15026
@fredley I read it better than I speak it - I took it a few semesters in uni, and am slowly using Rosetta stone to learn more
Having to type words out fully also helps you not forget how to properly spell them
17:38
@AshleyNunn Neat. Does Duolingo have it yet?
@Frank Absolutely 100%, I just mean that it's not limited to ISPs
@Chippies Not neccesssarilly
user15026
@fredley I don't think so, last I checked.
@cloudymusic Fair enough.
@fredley text speech is part of why people nowadays can't spell
or rather don't care to spell right
"it's internet, not an english class!"
user15026
17:40
@fredley just checked, doesn't have it yet. Has Dutch though, so I might also poke at that (because it would make my family, my grandma especially, happy. (My mom and her family came here from the Netherlands when my mom was 3))
@AshleyNunn you're like, the most diverse person I know!
user15026
@Chippies I'm a redneck rural white kid, so this is cracking me up
(I don't know that many people)
@Chippies Welcome to Not America
@Chippies Is it time to go over that conversation from yesterday?
17:41
Hmm, Cities:Skylines is a bit more demanding on the GPU than I expected. Looks like I really need to buy a new one soon.
@murgatroid99 was I involved in the conversation? Which one are we talking about here?
Damn kids these days have their brains augmented by the google and are getting progressively dumber! shakes fist sarcastically
That's kind of the middle of the conversation
@murgatroid99 There's 2 sides of the coin with that though
17:42
(hint: the conclusion of the conversation was "no, kids these days are no dumber than kids back in your day")
@Chippies What's the other side?
@murgatroid99 sure, you can not spell words fully because you're in a hurry, but eventually you'll have to spell properly and you won't remember how, because you have spelt words wrong your whole life
and for me personally, I find typing words out fully to be faster than to come up with short versions of words
@Chippies I think you missed the point I was trying to make
I'm pretty sure shorthand and abbreviations have existed for a long time.
@murgatroid99 Most likely so
17:44
@Chippies Text speech is part of why people nowadays can't spell language is evolving.
@OrigamiRobot Nope, this generation invented them. Obviously.
Damn generations
@Chippies You made a comment about the decreasing writing capabilities of "people nowadays". My point was that people have been saying that for 150+ years, and somehow, we're not all complete morons
I can guarantee anyone who knew Old English would be appalled at your spelling. And also not able to understand you at all.
these kids nowadays with their music and their lack of respect for their elders
17:45
Or even Middle English.
Stupid word of the day: Ecclectronic
TIL I'm an old cranky man
Somehow, every generation writes worse than the previous for over a hundred years, but we can still write just fine. It doesn't add up
@GnomeSlice I can't tell if that's a word or your phone tried to interpret "electronic".
No I'm home now.
17:45
@GnomeSlice is that some weird music subgenre?
@GnomeSlice Oh, okay.
It's some made up subgenre some artist put on his facebook page.
sounds about right

> Our youth now love luxury. They have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for their elders and love chatter in place of exercise; they no longer rise when elders enter the room; they contradict their parents, chatter before company; gobble up their food and tyrannize their teachers.
@GnomeSlice An artist's job is making stuff up
17:46
- Socrates
@murgatroid99 I'm pretty sure I've seen that before, it's so great
24 hours ago, by GnomeSlice
Wow, I used to post a lot of dumb shit
This is so perfect with the stars list.
People have literally been complaining about disrespectful youth since the beginning of written history
Further, I propose that technology shouldn't be considered a crutch just because back in your day you learned to spell by writing shit down and checking against a paper dictionary.
@Unionhawk exactly. If technology was a crutch, as a civilization, we wouldn't be getting better at doing things
17:49
@Unionhawk TBH I'm much more likely to double-check my spelling if I can just google it rather than pull out a paper dictionary
Exactly. Technology is a tool goddammit. It is not making us dumber or anything like that, it is enhancing our ability to spell things correctly (provided we care enough to listen to the squiggly lines and whatnot) (and also working solely on this example for some reason)
@GnomeSlice If you want to bait stars, say something like "Wow, I still post a lot of dumb shit"
@fredley rekt
theweebl is following me on twitter now apparently
user15026
@fredley I did learn just now that they are working on a Russian course for Duolingo, which is AWESOME and makes me happy
17:51
@Unionhawk Also, if you want to go full descriptivist, text shorthand isn't "incorrect spelling" as long as everyone in the conversation understands it.
user15026
Also Esperanto, which is making me giggle
user15026
@murgatroid99 This!
user15026
(I hate prescriptivism)
Consider the argument shot down (and then shot again when it hit the ground, for good measure)
17:53
@AshleyNunn "this language isn't the same as it was 300 years ago so we're clearly degenerating as a society"
@AshleyNunn Yeah. They can't push out languages fast enough
@AshleyNunn I think it has its place, if only for the fact that having a centrally curated repository of words and definitions is probably the best way to ensure mutual understanding
@AshleyNunn Right on, sister
user15026
@cloudymusic Everyone should speak proper Old English, am I right?
@AshleyNunn Verily.
17:54
I can't wait for schools to teach text speech, so I can rant about it online as I sit in a rocking chair and shout at kids on my lawn.
user15026
@Frank Pretty sure that's Middle.
@AshleyNunn Ryte on thee marke, Sistere
@AshleyNunn I have no idea, honestly. It sounded Shakespearean.
@AshleyNunn I thought it was early Modern
user15026
@murgatroid99 Yes, but the tenets and concepts that prescriptivists cling to have very little place in a transformative society
user15026
17:55
@murgatroid99 I waffled, but I am pretty sure you're right, my mistake
user15026
@Frank Which is nowhere near Old English.
I'm not sure if people are even using real words in the chat now...
@AshleyNunn Aww. And here I thought I was fulfilling the joke.
user15026
(rants about ye and thorns and things)
@Chippies how can words be real if our chat isn't real
17:55
I remember learning in an English class that Middle English would be basically incomprehensible to a modern English speaker
@cloudymusic how can our chat be real if I'm not real
@Chippies We're never using real words. Any semblance to real words is purely a figment of your imagination
user15026
@Frank I am just picky, because people think "medieval speak" is Old English, when really.....you'd never be able to understand it
@cloudymusic wrong capitalization for jayden quote
@AshleyNunn Probably not, no.
17:56
@Chippies I have been known to say brb outloud. but i take it one step dumber and just say "berb"
@MattGiltaji oh right, sorry
@Rapitor I just say bee arr bee
@MattGiltaji How Can Jayden Be Real If Capitals Aren't Real?
@Chippies Arby's?
user15026
@Frank I can pretty much guarantee it
17:57
@fredley don't think I've ever been in a country that has that
user15026
@murgatroid99 Middle you might be able to muddle through
@cloudymusic Surely it should be: "How can chat be real if words aren't real?"
user15026
@Chippies We have them?

Q: Blockdata Problems Please Help

user105994I've been working on something that uses lots of blockdata commands. It was all going well until I needed to put a enchanted book that works with anvils into the command so that I could get it out of the chest above and be able to use it to enchant something with efficiency v but I don't know how...

17:57
Beowulf is Old English, and it looks like this:

@Chippies I've seen a few here
to be fair, we don't have anything, in Newfoundland
@Chippies Newfoundland is also purely fictional
@fredley -1 forgot jaden case

@murgatroid99 I -knew- Beowulf was going to come into this. :P

It only works in the formal of a jaden smith style tweet thing though
