@Doorknob How do you read the Babble program "ARRHELLOWORLDZEPUT" out loud?

@El'endiaStarman :D

Afternoon

@Xanderhall afetrnoon

How goes it?

5:30 PM
@Rainbolt Except mine (6 stars)

Ugh, working with the Perl API sucks. All the examples work perfectly but anything I write is segmentation fault this and segmentation fault that

Wow, all the Perl rooms on SO are frozen. Lame
I was hoping to ask a question there

Is @quartata a chicken?

Wuh?
No.

5:40 PM
Your avatar.

@feersum Sleepy spiky eared Pichu.
>.< I like it.

I mean, maybe at small sizes it looks like a chicken...

Pokéchicken
Pikachicken?
There's a joke there somewhere

Oh no, quartata changes their avatar again. grabs pitchfork

Chikapu?

5:47 PM
@TimmyD Torchic?
No wait, that's a chick.

@mınxomaτ I changed it 3 days ago

One of its evolutions should have a chicken category...

I know practically nothing about Pokémon, so I can't help you.

Nooo wai no chicken category ;_;

We got a shout-out -- workplace.stackexchange.com/q/65692

5:55 PM
umm, blaziken?
@quartata Dunno, I immediately saw a pichu, but I'm not what you'd generally call "normal".

Note to self: fighting moves won't be super effective against Geobits.

Even in the small ones next to chat images?

@Geobits Uhh...
> The Blaze Pokemon
Nope, wrong category.
And no chicken category exists.

@feersum Yea. My eyes are pokemon-trained. I dunno how else to explain it ;)
@zyabin101 Oh, that's what you mean by "category". I thought you were just looking for the naming part to be chicken-based.

@Geobits It was previously known as species.

6:01 PM
Is it not still? I don't ever remember hearing it called category, tbh.
I certainly used speciesId as the variable when coding my pokedex :P

@Geobits It was previously known as species.
@Geobits Where is your Pokedex available?

@zyabin101 You might be able to find it on the webs somewhere. It's called Pokedextra (it's for android). Note that I haven't done anything with it since Nintendo cease-and-desisted me, so no kalos stuff.
I don't distribute it myself any more, pursuant to some stringently worded emails >_>

Boo, Nintendo

I wouldn't feel so bad about it if they'd bother taking down the other 20 of them on the play store >_<
(although that's a point of pride in a twisted way)

Yours is obviously so good that they felt threatened?

6:08 PM
I choose to see it that way, whether it's true or not ;)

@Geobits A spirit visits a farmer and offers to grant him a single wish. The farmer contemplates: "Hmmm, what could I possibly want? Oh, I know! My neighbour has a really nice cow, but I could never afford one. I want his cow to drop dead."

Sucks, too, cause the next update I was adding text-to-speech for the descriptions. My local copy has it :)

@Geobits in news unrelated to me googling your app, I found your google plus profile :P

My google plus profile is a damned mess.

You have a Google+ profile? ... Are you a Google employee?

6:11 PM
@Geobits Does yours have all 7 obligatory forms of pikachu?

@TimmyD Google+ is a social network.

@Geobits and minibit's real name

@zyabin101 Right. The joke is only Google employees use it.

@TimmyD Well, I "have one" in the "I signed up to try it out and haven't posted in years" sense.
@Maltysen Oh that's no secret. I've said it in here several times.

6:12 PM
Did I FGITW it? >_>

@Geobits oh. well here's another picture of him, while I'm already being creepy:

*time to doxx @Geobits*... oh, you've played Super Stickman Golf, that was pretty fun :)

You can probably find plenty if you creep over to the photos area.

@TimmyD It's missing: Stack Exchange - I'm a pedantic nerd who eats pastries that have toroidal geometry.

@HelkaHomba Haha, no... just male/female and shinies for both ;)

6:14 PM
@QPaysTaxes now?

I knew someone would try to correct some part of it ;)

Your school network is terrible.

^ @QPaysTaxes this?

No, it blocks imgur too. Terrible.

6:15 PM
@FryAmTheEggman I figured it would be a post debating "doughnut" versus "donut"

@HelkaHomba eww pokemon tcg :D

@QPaysTaxes maybe minibits is just inherently nsfw :P

I don't think there's anything of him recent on there anyway.

s/too cool for school/nsfc/

@Geobits all your japan pics are pretty interesting
also there's one of him rising a komodo dragon statue

I took a bunch of pictures there, yea. I had a habit of just hopping on the train and getting lost for a while in some town or another.

Donuts or Donuts Inc. is a start-up company that was created to apply and run new generic top-level domains (gTLDs) as made possible by ICANN's gTLD expansion program; it was co-founded by Paul Stahura, Jonathon Nevett, Richard Tindal, and Daniel Schindler. In April 2011, the company was in stealth mode and raising capital; based on the company's filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Donuts raised US$1 million equity financing. Since then it has submitted 307 gTLD applications and secured an initial investment of $100 million in financing, and a subsequent round of an undisclosed...

Turkey and mac and cheese are delicious.
Oh, I figured it was obvious.
Wait, you can see that picture but not the one posted earlier from the same place? Weird.

@QPaysTaxes maybe minibits is just inherently nsfw :P
but what about my imgur link?
oh

Dhje never sees imgur links. It's a good way to troll dhjem.

sys.setrecursionlimit(1 << 30) Lol Dennis didn't mess around when I suggested increasing jelly's recursion limit...

6:28 PM
Well then.
That should suffice.

I think Pyth has a similarly silly line, but I think isaacg just mashed 0 rather than typing other characters.

@FryAmTheEggman Yeah pyth has something like sys.setrecursionlimit(99999999999999)

I believe it preprocesses them, I think elendia ran some question about it on SO a while ago...
@quartata I distinctly remember it being of the form 1000...000 :P
Ah, yep, there it is: sys.setrecursionlimit(100000)

It was definitely all 9s

@FryAmTheEggman I believe that line is actually for the parser and not for actual execution

6:36 PM
Oh, lol I guess I'd been looking at the wrong one >_<

Is the parser recursive?

@quartata very

Hrmm, no I think it was added for the Ackermann function originally: github.com/isaacg1/pyth/commit/…

Recursive (adj) -- what happens when you're writing programming loops and can't get things to work right, you curse and re-curse again and again.

Something like take next char stick it in a node then for 1..arity recurse and add result as child?

6:38 PM
"Todd became really recursive after writing 200 lines of code that didn't work."

@quartata more like parse_rest_of_code(rest_code, current_compiled_code)
and then that calls different parse functions depending on the first character of rest_code
which call parse_rest_code again

Try it!
I wonder if the bell character is supported on TIO...

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ how will he know if it beeped?

@QPaysTaxes Nope. Because servers don't have sound.

@Maltysen If his C9 account is blocked for excessive beeping.
:P

6:46 PM
@QPaysTaxes I don't think servers have sound.

Then how do they hear the requests users make to them?
They must have souls.

@QPaysTaxes iter with two args, if I'm understanding your question correctly

does anyone in here know about trains of verbs in J?

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ chug-a chug-a, choooo chooooo

gee thanks
Specifically, what does (u v) a mean?
Everyone's a comic. sighs

6:54 PM
SFGITW'd /o\
@QPaysTaxes Second fastest gun in the West.
@QPaysTaxes It's a worried face.

@zyabin101 is that a synonym for "ninja'd"?

Ah, so (u v) a = a u (v a)
I'm having to teach myself this, but I guess it's better because it sticks.

@Maltysen It's for something else.
Third gun will be TFGITW, fourth and so on will be <N>FGITW where <N> is the place.
So fourth is 4FGITW, fifth is 5FGITW...

So, just to confirm...
(u v) a => a u (v a)
(u v w) a => (u a) v (w a)
(u v w q) a => (u (v w q)) a => a u ((v w q) a) => a u ((v a) w (q a))
(u v w q r) a => (u v (w q r)) a => (u a) v ((w q r) a) => (u a) v ((w a) q (r a))
Right? (to anyone who knows this stuff)
I'll refrain from pinging each of you because that's just obnoxious >_<

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ (Erm, nope. To no one... No.)

Man my coworker can be frustrating sometimes. I implemented something in a less efficient way because it reduced the number of decisions from eight to two, making the code far easier to read. I tested my solution on a maximum workload and proved that it executed in what SQL Server claims to be zero seconds. He still won't approve my code review.

@Rainbolt Sounds like your coworker is a fan of premature optimisation, maybe introduce them to velociknuths :P

Is that spelled correctly? velociknuths ?
I'm trying to find it on Google lol

Yes.
(I just made it up)

7:30 PM
Premature optimization. I like that phrase

raptor : velociraptors :: Knuth : velociknuths

Yeah it's a quote from Donald Knuth, and then I just kind of mixed it with xkcd's velociraptor goto thing :P

One of my goals this year is to try to accept ideas that are good enough instead of always trying to force the best idea through. Being on the receiving end of this reminds me of that.

"Programmers waste enormous amounts of time thinking about, or worrying about, the speed of noncritical parts of their programs, and these attempts at efficiency actually have a strong negative impact when debugging and maintenance are considered. We should forget about small efficiencies, say about 97% of the time: premature optimization is the root of all evil. Yet we should not pass up our opportunities in that critical 3%."

Thanks for that

7:34 PM
Premature optimization ... I'll have to remember that.

I'm not going to go throw it at my coworkers but I'll remember it like I remember the negative programmer hero

Negative programmer hero? I haven't heard of that one.

> The real hero of programming is the one who writes negative code. ~ Malcolm Douglas McIlroy

Ooh, that's a good one.

Which in my world basically translates to "Oh look. A function with zero references. Kill!"
I wish Visual Studio would show that events like Page_Load and Page_Init do have references. Somebody somewhere is calling them.
It is Friday

7:41 PM
Friday Friday gotta get down on Friday // Looking forward to the weekend, weekend

@Rainbolt I hear that this time, Friday extends all the way until tomorrow.

I heard that this one will be just as long as the last one.

Isn't each day slightly longer than the previous one (in general) because of the moon's tidal forces?

I took her out, it was a Friday night

Any C++ers here?

7:47 PM
@FryAmTheEggman yes.

Is following ok? delete f; f = some_new_f;?

@flawr haven't used C++ in a while, but I'm pretty sure it is.

Do you need to re-declare the variable? (I'm not super familiar with C++)

16
A: Assigning to pointer immediately after deleting

Charles SalviaYes it is safe. It's useless to set the deleted pointer to NULL if you're about to reassign it anyway. The reason people set deleted pointers to NULL is so they can "mark" it as deleted, so later they can check if it has already been deleted.

@TimmyD no
delete is to new what free is malloc/calloc. as long as they're correctly paired, all is well.

Ah, right, pointers.
Good gravy, am I rusty in that style of programming.

7:50 PM
@TimmyD What do you mean while(a*++=b*++); isn't a totally readable version of strcpy ;)

Dang. MySql allows deleting from two tables, but SQL Server doesn't.

@FryAmTheEggman oh that's pretty nice

Now I have to collect the rows I want to delete, then delete them. That's more work :(

DELETE FROM table1
DELETE FROM table2

s/nice/horrible/ ;)

7:52 PM
@FryAmTheEggman Quite golfy=)

Boom.

@MorganThrapp DROP *
@MartinBüttner Thank you!

@MorganThrapp I want to delete from both tables where the primary key is the same in both tables and a bit is set to false.

@flawr Well, that kills the schema too.

So I can't delete one at a time

7:53 PM
Just save the results in a CTE. :P

Which is exactly the same as what I just said earlier: collect the rows I want to delete, then delete them

Yeah, but with a CTE.

... good point

@Maltysen It says it at the very bottom

8:02 PM
Hrm it has a winning criterion, isn't it a validity criterion that it's missing?
Forget how we close stuff like that... I was going to mention in the sandbox but I forgot :x

I would avoid downvoting just because it's a pop con. The challenge clearly has had some work put into it. Close vote maybe, but save your downvotes unless you really find the challenge boring or poorly written
I only say that because it's a pretty lengthy challenge and I don't want the guy to feel bad

Anonymous
I'm not sure about the closevote... It seems to be a perfectly valid challenge.

Anonymous
The only thing it's really missing is "submissions should aim for these qualities"

I think people are starting to close vote popularity contests just because they're popularity contests

Anonymous
I've been CVing some old popcons that aren't on-topic anymore (no validity criterion, too broad, etc.)

8:08 PM
@FryAmTheEggman The validity criterion on this one is that the output is correct for all possible inputs.

@Mego Yeah, those are fine.

@Mego I think it is totally unsuitable as a pop-con.

Is that a reason to close vote though?

Yes

Yeah I've been reading over it, I'm not sure. I still haven't decided on anything
