@nitstorm 12.04 release party in Chennai!!

@jokerdino When did that happen?

like in 21/7/2012

lol :P
So when? where?

MIT chromepet.

Cool :)
You in Chennai during that time?

4:07 AM
no :/

oh... :(
got a link that I can look up?

it's in tamil

o..O
nvm

I really need to learn to read and write Tamil macha...

4:09 AM
yep totally~

GoogleTranslate to the rescue!
It says students only or something right?

no.

oh just organized along WITH the students

yeah that's right

cool cool :) Will be trying to make it there :)

4:12 AM
yeah let them know i sent you :p
if you are going that is
seems like lots of stuff are gonna happen.

Oh cool :)

askubuntu.com/q/162222/25798 close Linux Mint already?

gonna switch computers shortly

4:29 AM
@RolandTaylor She can try Mints or Mentos or Lifesavers, but they won't help this hard drive.

@jokerdino okay let's all agree that it is a grub bug. blame it on grub :P

izx
@msPeachy If everything works at night after repeated reboots, but then you get grub2 errors and filesystem/fsck errors in the morning, it isn't a software problem...

but how come when i was using ubuntu 11.10 i didn't encounter these issues?

izx
Because your hard disk hadn't started to rot yet...

@izx what other boot manager should i use? if not grub?

4:32 AM
@msPeachy Grub est die beste!

izx
A boot manager that fixes failing hard drives in the background ;)

@nitstorm i'd like to think so too

But then you have a bunch of other choices, depends on your personal preferences

izx
@msPeachy In all seriousness, the problem is not Grub, or Ubuntu, but the fact that your hard drive is dying. You can blame the doctors and say the medicines don't work, but ultimately, hard drive death is a fact of digital life.

@izx you mean a failing hard drive chooses an OS too? It works with Windows as I remember

4:35 AM
when was the last time you used Windows?

izx
@msPeachy It does? Please run `chkdsk /r /f C:` and if it comes back without errors then you're good to go.

Two weeks ago...I will install it again later if I still can't boot into Ubuntu

izx
OK, do that but please remember to run chkdsk /r /f from the Command Prompt and then reboot -- watch the test carefully.

@izx okay will do that, but frankly I can't stand Windows
I'd like to try FreeBSD

O_O

izx
4:38 AM
I suggest you try Mac OS X. That's guaranteed to solve ALL your problems.
And it's based on FreeBSD! ^^^^^
Dupededupe:

Yep that's the way to go.

Q: how to install a virtual machine player on ubuntu 10.10

PaulI've got ubuntu 10.10 installed and now like to install a virtual machine player so that i can run other OS. Couldn't figure out a way to install a virtual machine player such as vmware player....

After reloading 12.04, I was able to change permissions for grub.cfg, but gedit will not let me save it. I am a little irritated that Ubuntu...

@jrg me at bsides? can only afford one trip, so negative. won't be making it to cleveland

4:49 AM
@aking1012 Can you post that GoogleDocs link again please?

@msPeachy it's interesting, but not the same to set up/manage at all. start with something simpler like PCBSD...then when you understand the package management stuff, ports tree, etc and have a weekend to keep going back to "the manual" for configuring - try FreeBSD
@izx sure

Q: Grub failure after cat removed USB drive

user76270I had a perfectly working Ubuntu Server system with U12.4 and Server installed and was setting up the mail system. When I was absent from my computer room my cat (furry type) apparently got to play with a USB dongle on an extension cable and removed it. The system went berserk and now will not ...

@aking1012: can you give me comment access on it?

yeah, but i would need gmail connect for that... just send me a mail and i will

as soon as it shows up in inbox i'll add comment access

Q: How to remove Wubi, without causing boot issues?

SpenserI have Windows 7 as my main host OS, and then i installed Wubi Ubuntu 11.04. Later to this i installed a partition Ubuntu 11.10 ( beta 2). So altogether i have Windows 7, 11.04 (Wubi) 11.10 beta 2 Now basically what I want to do is move some files from the wubi installation via a USB and move ...

Q: Synching contacts between 12.04 and LG Optimus One P500

Praveen SripatiI have an LG Optimus One P500 and am using Ubuntu 12.04. Has anyone tried syncing the contacts between P500 and 12.04? I did search on the internet, but couldn't find much.

5:18 AM
@nitstorm I don't know. Maybe it could be generalised to how to sync ubuntu and android contacts. That would be not nearly as localised...

@aking1012 hmmm, so the question could use editing....

It could be closed as too localised or edited to be more general....either way (just my opinion)

cool :)

A: Ubuntu 12.04 won't boot at all for the first time

Akshit BaunthiyalYou must never use wubi (the windows installer). It has a lot of issues like no hibernation, slower data I/O rate, etc. Download the Ubuntu iso. Create a partition in Windows allocating at least 20 GB HDD space for Linux. Boot into live and click on Install icon on the desktop. Then select the in...

The answer is pretty negative and advises users against using Wubi

@nitstorm I friendly-ed it up a bit (I prefer as opposed to you must never)...because I sort of agree, but I don't upgoat if I have to edit to friendly something.

@aking1012 Cool :)

I am black.
Put stuff in a sack.

So I be takin' it back.
For this game I gotta a nack.

o/ @Roland

ha ha ha :P
Rappin' Roland :P

Like the boss I am :)
And yes I do that irl.
Not with those words, ofc :D

@RolandTaylor Did you get my message?
(The one about Flack Overstow having an API?)

@GeorgeEdison Yesh :D
/flack me this, /flack me that, who's afraid of the big brown stack :D? (Batman 3 reference)

5:31 AM
@RolandTaylor on the like a boss note:

So... the API is basically just waiting for someone to write an app that displays random flack every half hour :)

@GeorgeEdison muhahahaha
@aking1012 win win win :D
@GeorgeEdison Are you planning to add simple example code to the documentation?

Yeah, the documentation needs some work.
...and some sort of "example browser" thing.
But it's pretty basic at this point: http://quickmediasolutions.com/api/ {some method} ?key= {your key}
It supports JSONP, so you can use JavaScript to access it from another domain.

cool
I don't know squat about JSON off hand but that sounds easy

JSON is basically the better alternative to XML:
{
  'something': 'the value for something'
}

5:37 AM
there's a really handy python wrapper. i'ld never done anything with it until i started considering something for app-showdown and it was really simple

JSONP basically is the same thing only prefixed by a function call and returned with the application/javascript MIME type:
callback({
  'something': 'value for something'
});
The need for JSONP arises from the cross-domain restrictions placed on client-side JavaScript to prevent cross-domain attacks.
Because the browser will happily load scripts from any domain, the JSONP request injects the <script> on to the page, and because it's basically a function call, that function is invoked with the results of the request.
It's quite ingenious actually.
Or you could just use Python :P
2

Either one is good - I hardly use either one - but once I get started I tend to get through :)
I'm weird like that :P

I know exactly what you're talking about. A year and a half ago, I sat down to write my first line of C# code. Three days later I had written a multithreaded bot that used a JSON API to fetch data and tweet it to Twitter, using OAuth for authentication.
It's amazing what you can do when you force yourself to do it.

@RolandTaylor There are only three kinds of people. Those who will always use ruby. Those who haven't realised how awesome python is. And those with quasi-religious devotion to python.

5:44 AM
I used to write every project the night before (when I was "learning" C++) in college :P

Oh that reminds me...

And come on top of the class most times
@aking1012 hahaha

PC World ran an article in their latest magazine to help users get their feet wet with programming.
Guess which language they recommended?

@GeorgeEdison Same as MIT and Stanford?(python)

Nope, try again :)

5:45 AM
oh nooooos - i give up

-> Administration -> Software Sources -> Updates (tab) -> Check for updates:

Ruby.
No seriously (and don't tell @jrg I said it like that).

ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
man I need to go scrub (again)

Python. Every beginner should learn Python. And after that C++. Then they will be set for life.

:/ - I liked ruby until I had to do anything with binary data (too much dynamic casting you can't control and it's heavier on memory space)

5:46 AM
Gmail Notifier is probably the best option for what you are trying to accomplish.
Does not support OAuth, it won't work.

did you know that ruby parses:
this = "something" +
       "something"
to take more memory than python parses the same?

^--- for when Roland Taylor has nothing better to say :)

> "If you later decide you want the notifications back, you install the proprietary drivers."

@GeorgeEdison LOL
(That made me lol irl)

So long Noveau...

5:56 AM
found a bug that needs a fix...and it's a simple packaging bug: bugs.launchpad.net/gladex/+bug/422977
"don't include pycs in your debs please...kthx"

You know what bug needs to be fixed? The fact that quickly does nothing to update python files when you edit the gui of your applications in glade :)

that's why i'm working on simply

lol really?

the configuration tab has all the command-lines that get run to do things with an add-new button. this way jrg could add a ruby template if he wanted... take it all back to tying together scripts/commands and it magically works

6:02 AM
Nice!
You will need to boot into recovery mode, then issue apt-get remove --purge flashplugin-installer sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get remove --purge nvidia-current on the root option) Then run the original NVIDIA drivers, and select the command line at the bottom: blacklist nouveau.

6:26 AM
Last msg for the night:

as long as it's not from flackbot ;)

@GeorgeEdison : "So long as you upgrade via the older software in order to introduce new features, seal off some bugs, and support newer APIs, etc."

(Flackoverstow gem)
@aking1012 Lol...

At last!!!!

@user75798 at last what?

Hello asking1012!
I am finally able to chat in this room!
I was without a voice!
It was terribly frustrating

6:32 AM
sed -i 's/ask/ak/g'
and fair point

what cool things can i do in this chat room?

talk to people about things you're working on/problems you're having...sometimes it digresses quite a bit. it's more active than a lot of places though

what are the benefits of this chat over IRC?

generally activity - there are formatting bonuses too

you mean there are more people actively responding on here, @asking1012?

6:37 AM
yes. not at this moment (it's more active eastern and central US time)

@asking 1012 Do I have to put @asking1012 at the beginning of my chat line to alert you?

no. see sed -i 's/ask/ak/g'

Is it easy to past a picture into this chat?

pictures and videos get oneboxed, but i'm sure there are IRC clients that do that from URLs

Good night everyone.

6:39 AM
@RolandTaylor have a better one @Roland

Don't do anything I wouldn't do without the bribery of cookies.
@aking1012 thanks ^_^ you too!

if only i had known all it took was cookies

Could you show me an exmaple of one boxing a video and a picture? I would be very grateful

you can a) post a link with nothing else in the message or b) use the upload button for images ...

6:41 AM
I can't see an upload button

Oh, wow! I just did it! Great!

upset cat is upset

@aking1012 @asking1012 Thanks for that cool image, but you have an upload button, while I do not...
I only have a send button

that's odd. someone the other day said they didn't have a fixed font button. it might be rep-related

6:45 AM
Let me check it out, asking1012 - I might get some rep for it!
haah! that cat doesn't look happy!

I have send, upload and clipboard

@JourneymanGeek i don't have clipboard, so i suspect it is rep related

@asking1012 - how did you manage to upload a picture of that task bar so well? What cool software/technique did you use?

must be
XD
also, biggest thing SE has over IRC? Awesome logging, and (within 5 minutes) being able to edit your post

@user75798 that --^
although i think my edit threshold is 1 minute

6:48 AM
or something. I hardly edit.

@user75798 if you don't have an upload button you could always just upload to imgur and dump a link directly to the image. it's all that really happens anyway

@user75798 thanks for that suggestion

@JourneymanGeek think there's some confusion on the reply feature

you can click on the little arrow thats hidden between the the message and the user to reply @user75798

6:55 AM
or @username to reply to the last message from the user...you have to spell it properly for the reply to work though

@journeyman - that was very helpful, journeyman - thank you!

not really, just need the first three letters i think
and tabcomplete works

@JourneymanGeek yes, but @ask wouldn't reply to @aki

@JourneymanGeek @journeyman - what tool did you use to get that screenshot?
So you can actually edit your comments here in this chat, unlike in IRC... that is good to know
Can you use xchat to participate in this chat?

6:59 AM
not yet, no

and no, there is no IRC to stackchat bridge

@JourneymanGeek are people working on getting xchat going with this chat?

Q: IRC access for the chat?

jszWill there be any way of accessing the chat over IRC? As beautiful ajax interfaces are ... IRC is still #1 for chats.

I found a very cool tool yesterday for doing screenshot stuff - shutter - it is in the repositories - it has lots of features, but I haven't used it properly yet - do you know it?

@user75798 lots of people like shutter

7:01 AM
@aking1012 Nice - thank you! :)

there's a similar question about an xmpp bridge on meta as well

This chat doesn't do smileys - is that another yet, too?

that one sounds like a userscript fix/enhancement. i don't think they really want nonsensical smileys in chat
it could break fixed font formatting if you implemented it though. best to just leave smileys alone i think

If you want to upload a block of code from the output of a command, how would you do that here?
I am used to using pastebin

you can dump pastebin links...fixed font would do it too
def something(fixed):
    log('like this: ' + str(fixed))
some countries block pastebin...so it's hit or miss

7:10 AM
@aking1012 Thank you for that - I am unable to see a Fixed Font button.
@aking1012 That is very interesting! Why do they block pastebin? Which countries?

again, might be rep related. it only shows up on multiline entries too. could be either
@user75798 @Mahesh indicated it was blocked where he was
I haven't experienced it first hand...

Wow! That is so cool! I can click on the notification to see a highlighted line where I was mentioned

yep. if you grab the page source, it's all done with message id s

Q: Why is the upload button in chat missing?

user75798I cannot see an upload button in chat. Why is this? Maybe you require a certain amount of reputation to get this feature. How much do you need? The fixed font button is missing, too. Perhaps it should be listed as a privilege in this page.

This chat webpage doesn't validate:

that's a question for meta
@user75798 maybe not. it's all js dynamic updating of the dom which isn't always friendly to validators i suppose

7:16 AM
@aking1012 Well spotted! I just posted it :) Hopefully I will get some reputation for it!
I want to unlock priveliges - I want to be able to create tags and tag synonyms
How did you feel when you all started off here? Were you frustrated by not having enough reputation?

nope. i just answered questions mostly. i've asked more questions possibly that i knew the answer to recently to try and build the useful knowledge-base of the site

Oh, that is a good thing to do.
This site is amazing software - it is superb!
Does it bother you that it is proprietary?

sort of...CC is fine, but i have a moral dilemma when people start mixing CC/OSS/FOSS with proprietary
like network equipment that uses openssh but never donates. that makes me relatively angry
i suppose stackexchange giving the raw data back could be considered their contribution, so it doesn't upset me

can i close my own question?

if it doesn't have answers yes
what question?

7:26 AM
how do i close it then? or remove it?
if you guys will down vote it, i might as well remove it. :P

the delete button

oh okay, thank you

i think that's a duplicate question, which is why it probably got downed. it wasn't me though

@aking1012 I've searched for similar questions but mine is a combination of hd0 out of disk error and low graphics mode. thanks anyway.

@msPeachy ah...fair point

7:34 AM
there, it's deleted

@aking1012 What do you mean by CC and OSS?

Good day All

@Mitch o/

I won't be participating much for the next 3 weeks because of a broken right hand

@user75798 well, the content all becomes creative commons (free-ish with attribution). but parts of the engine that serves it up are not. so it's awkward. it's just a complex moral ground
@Mitch :( how did that happen?

7:36 AM
I fell, and hit the TV cabinet

Somewhat less dramatic than I was hoping for... "I fended off a mugger and broke my hand on his face" would have been much more interesting

The Ubuntu Forums use proprietary software too, but it also is great forum software, though sadly not free

lol

@aking1012 Do you spend more time here or at Ubuntu Forums ? Why?

@aking1012 Can you look at this question, specially the answer that needs the edit approved
4
A: Higher screen resolution for VirtualBox?

wfudgeThis worked for me and I am running VirtualBox 4.1.8 and Ubuntu 11.10. sudo apt-get install virtualbox-ose-guest-utils virtualbox-ose-guest-x11 virtualbox-ose-guest-dkms Found it on this site under a slightly different question Higher screen resolution in VirtualBox?

7:38 AM
@user75798 i'll answer that momentarily
@Mitch on it

Should it be rejected as invalid edit?

yes. it's a comment not an answer component

I just did

'it is a comment and adds very little to the answer' <-- my reason for rejecting the edit
@user75798 I like the QA format because it provides atomized knowledge. UF is interesting in that it allows freedom of discussion. I have more than once cited UF in an answer on AU though
if that doesn't make sense, lmk what is unclear

@aking1012 Atomised knowledge - nice!
Could you use this stack exchange software for free discussion too? On another site, for example?

7:44 AM
I'm not sure what you mean

Bounty offered: How do I ensure an NFS share stays mounted? http://askubuntu.com/questions/155087/how-do-i-ensure-an-nfs-share-stays-mounted?atw=1 #nfs

heh...it's still renamed to interrupter

A: How do I get a Netgear N900 WNDA4100 wireless USB adapter working?

aking1012A fellow on ubuntuforums thinks it's the 2010_0709_RT2870_Linux_STA_v2.4.0.1.tar.bz2 that will work for that stick. I can't test it, but it compiles fine for me. I started with this driver from Sourceforge Japan. Working along with this guide I changed these lines: HAS_WPA_SUPPLICANT=...

that's an example where i cite UF

@aking1012 For example, there are free software clones of the Stack Exchange software. Do you think that this software could well handle discussions, instead of just Q & A?

I don't think that's what a voting based platform is built for. If there were a chat module for them...then maybe. Discussion in chat, then a modular/atomic answer.

7:50 AM
Wow! How pretty! I just saw a new user added to the chat room by an icon drifting down into the user list on the right!

Yeah. I might build it differently. I'm spartan-ish on UI

Where can I see the log for this chat? Is it continually updated?

full transcript button at the top

The chat thing is practically a seperate 'site' on its own
but shared between most of SE

Q: I'm cloning the StackExchange chat UI - yay or boo?

Stefano PalazzoI'm working on a clone of the Stack Exchange chat. Many of the UI aspects of the SE chat are cloned entirely. The back-end, I'm guessing, is very different. While I don't, of course, use a single line of code from Stack Exchange, and I know there are no legal problems in what I'm doing, I want t...

OH
he got it running

I just had a look at the log highlights - but I am still not clear what it does - is it just my messages and things I starred as interesting?

Awesome...although "Prepare to be sued" makes me less than happy

naw, its just SE humour
SE is VERY open to clones, and even dosen't mind properly attributed data scrapes
2

<-- has a flashback to about 12 hours ago

7:57 AM
@JourneymanGeek That is great to know, journeyman! Do you know an example site that scraped the SE code and got their own sit eu
own site up and running?

naw, not SE code, SE content
but there's some very close clones to it

By the way, do you see it if I flad a line of chat as interesting? Do you get rep for it?

I've played with OSQA for a bit, its ncie
naw, you can get a badge tho

I have been looking at OSQA
The developers are a company that produce a closed source version of SE - it is entirely different code from OSQA
I wonder why they help update OSQA - it isn't the same code as in their sold product.
Have you seen their sold product in action?
There is Shappado too

Q: Stack Overflow clones

AndrijaListed here are clones of the Stack Exchange sites model.

@user75798 here's a list
this question is ripe for EPIC rep: askubuntu.com/questions/162287/…

8:06 AM
@aking1012 Thank you!

@user75798 np

@aking1012 Haha! That is just what I need - thank you for alerting us! I wonder if I can answer it!!
How much rep can you get off a good question/answer? Do you end up getting more rep for Q or A?

I've gotten upwards of 200 for an answer without a bounty and upwards of 300 for a bountied one
example

aking10121 Question at a time per the FAQ What is kernel panic? When the kernel can't load properly or "freaks out" and fails to boot properly or crashes(see edit credit at the bottom). @user75798 if you want rep don't link-drop. do the leg-work and try it out, post the commands

@aking1012 Thank you! I had better look at that quickly!

you were first to post...so you'll probably get the rep if you keep revising

@JourneymanGeek yes, yes they do
anyone interested on pitching in to a massive Gtk gi.repo tut?

not me, on account of not knowing what a gi.repo is ;p

erm, the Gtk3 with introspection version of the Gtk libs for python or other languages. It doesn't have the "all-widgets" thing like pygtk did yet

While i don't have much rep on AU, another thing is to try to answer a question a day. If you can't, you need to work on your skills (as i do). if you do, you get a solid average amount of rep.
still lost @aking1012 ;p

fair point. i go for one big question instead of lots of little ones recently i got harangued for providing minimal answers at one point

8:24 AM
lol
Hence the one question a day thing
I find a lot of users seem to... try to buckshot answers, when you, and the site are better off with slugs
Oh, and bounties, even if i give away all the rep i get from them ;p

lollerskates
buckshotting answers is a good way to get the unsung hero badge though
