1. Confused, and 2. LOL

5 hours ago, by George Edison
No seriously (and don't tell @jrg I said it like that).
1: explained

jrg
They didn't even talk about Hackety Hack or KidsRuby?!

:( sry @jrg

jrg
I will fix this by making those two projects EPIC. ;P

@jrg git a minute or busy?

jrg
11:07 AM
@aking1012 I'm here, whats up?

thoughts on simply
simply
->filesystem - for packaging weirdness
   ->whatever
->ui
   ->glade file goes here...just one not a dozen
->handler
   ->just one file
->meat(or something)
   ->holds real worker code

good idea?  recommendations?

jrg
Or, as the Sheriff said in The Apple Dumpling gang, do you need me as Developer, Sysadmin or moderator?
Ah, ok.
i like it.
that's the basic setup that most "proper" gems have, so I'm biased (and like it)

heheh
i know in python i can use init.py to recursively import a folder structure...does ruby have something generic like that? or it has to be templated? design decision looming

How should this question be handled? Should it be moved to meta, or closed again?

Q: why is my question closed?

mathiasI wrote a question before like this "Hi i just installed Ubuntu and it seems like a nice operating system. I just have some questions about the security. How safe is ubuntu? is there no risc developers make source codes like trojans in the operating system , is it safe to download applications an...

jrg
@aking1012 Hm. I'm not sure. Let me look
@Mitch that should be migrated to meta, but lets let it sit for a little bit, we may have solved his problem if he reads the link there.

11:16 AM
k
@fossfreedom I broke my hand, I have your answer. Give me a couple of days, and I'll post it in the room. Thanks, and sorry for the delay.

@Mitch edited to address a couple of things

@aking1012 Thanks

np

@Mitch ouch ... typing on one hand ... thats when you want good voice control!

That would be nice...lol Since I'm typing left handed, and its my right that broke..

11:20 AM
i'm more working so skeksi tts on my box
also added a comment that links to several relevant questions

jrg
Sweet, I think I'll upgrade the thinkpad to Q today, and then rock Wayland from the PPA. :O

I just convinced my dad to go with a thinkpad...
Linux is still a longshot though since he needs webex
oh and this one will be closed too. – Rinzwind 9 secs ago lollerskates

I'm sexy and I know it...

@jrg @fossfreedom wrong dup

@msPeachy just because it made me laugh

Q: Is Ubuntu safe?

mathias Possible Duplicate: Why is Ubuntu more secure than Windows or Mac OS X? Hi, I just installed Ubuntu and it seems like a nice operating system. I just have some questions about the security. How safe is Ubuntu? Are there any risks. Do developers make source codes like Trojans in the Ope...

@jokerdino ty added that to comments on aforementioned question

@jokerdino you are absolutely correct ... actually the two Qs cover the same ground. Both have great answers.

jrg
I'd do it if Chrome didn't keep segf'ng every 10 seconds.
@fossfreedom also correct.

chromium ftw

@fossfreedom multi dupe it then?

11:34 AM
this made you laugh??? :P
I was just singing along with rhythmbox...

jrg
I smell a merge candidate.

I think so - agree @jrg - which one to be the master?

don't merge it. don't

jrg
@jokerdino why not?

just because the answer is same doesn't mean it is the same question
or maybe it is? o.O

11:35 AM
i think there's a distinction. one is "why did it happen" the other is "the actual question"
just saying

jrg
When I go to merge something, it says this:

leave be then - perhaps just add a link in the Q's to each other?

jrg
> Questions should be merged when they are 99% identical and it would be beneficial to have all the answers from multiple duplicate questions in one place.

@fossfreedom yeah

already did that...if we're talking about the same thing and comments count

jrg
11:36 AM
They seem close enough to me. :P
if it looks like a dupe, and smells like a dupe, and weighs about as much as a dupe, IT MUST BE A DUPE! ;)

i agree...i just see a substantial difference in one being a real question and the other being a why did this happen question

@jrg i might call you out next time then.. meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/139349/…
OMG MODERATOR ABUSE!!!111

for practical intents and purposes the other question could read "why did my question about snuffleupugous get declared off-topic" which is equally meta-y and needs a response on meta...not a merge to something on AU

jrg
@jokerdino Oh my that is good for a laugh.
@jokerdino This answer = my feelings on the matter. meta.stackoverflow.com/a/139354/156713

@jrg we know you can...we just hope that you don't when there's some dissension in the ranks

11:42 AM
@jrg well i was just poking fun. i won't call you out on meta though. that is just wrong on my part

jrg
As was said in 2010: A Space Odyssey: "A Captain is always certain. Wrong, maybe. But always certain".
@jokerdino Oh, sorry. I jumped to conclusions given our past differences on stuff.

cannot believe we're citing 2010 a space odyssey as a reference... ;P
3

o.O
@jrg what does that mean? we eventually came to a conclusion. (usually me understanding things but yeah ;p)

jrg
@aking1012 Well, that's where I heard it first. I've since found out that it was in some journal Shackelton had.

I love Shackleton.

11:44 AM
i know...my snark overcame my reason momentarily. feel free to star that too. i'm not emarassed about it

And Scott.
And Amundsen.

jrg
@jokerdino Forget I mentioned anything.

@jrg okay

how do i get out low-graphics mode?

you buy a new computer that is not broke.

11:47 AM
really?

really

@jokerdino ouch

i'm using the computer now

your question should be, what the hell is this failsafe x doing in here?

runs smoothly with windows, i play games, with aero and everything

11:48 AM
video card...what video card

i just don't get why my graphics and screen could not be detected by ubuntu
@jokerdino I don't even know what failsafe means :P

if it's intel...my answer is it'll be fixed in a year or two. otherwise it's "use blob and get a current mainline(not new or old) card"

Gonna reinstall again but this is the last time, if I see this hd0 out of disk again I'll give up Pangolin, and downgrade to Oneiric

just downgrade to oneiric.
ofcourse you will have the same problem in the morning.

11:52 AM
lol

bad sectors in da house. you refuse to admit that.

hope not. I've used Oneiric before for a very long time

@aking1012 WHAT??/

I know there are bad sectors but that doesn't mean I can't run Ubuntu. Windows runs smoothly, even Mint

11:54 AM
you are complaining now. @aking1012 insert your statement here

"I know there are bad sectors" <-- end of discussion

@aking1012 Chris Tucker?
@aking1012 ok

anyone know of a irc log syntax plugin for gedit?

YEEES!!!! finally logged in! :D
couldn't login on this chat room.. strange issue... :P

i can has psychocats answers posts on AU??

11:57 AM
@aking1012 you knocked her out?

speculating
@jokerdino no she left

@aking1012 some people (ME) have used answers that come from physcocats..

yesterday, by aking1012
we need a canonical answer on-site that cites psychocats
all i'm saying on the issue

@aking1012 I linked my source.. :P

not originally. and one question instead of a thousand is prefereable

jrg
12:02 PM
^^ this (mostly the latter)

why can't we not support Ubuntu+1? shrugs and strolls to the ugly UF.

@jokerdino if bugs are off-topic so is +1
i think the target demographic for AU is not you or me...just saying

i didn't say i don't understand. it is just a reflective thought.

it's a fair point, but consider the number of black-screen questions we got
not all users are even reasonably responsible

btw, session on Ubuntu development later today

@jokerdino time and irc channel?

#ubuntu-classroom in UTC +15
in about 3 hours

@jokerdino may or may not be there, but thanks

i hope i'll be there. i wanted to know some basics

if it's going to be bi-directional that would be a plus (sometimes IRC is more imparting what you want to say than a bidirectional conversation...and i may raise some hard questions...like why isn't there a massive example like we had in pygtk2)

12:16 PM
yeah, it's a class room. you can ask questions.

you know what i meant

well, it is not a conversation type. but you can pose questions though.

see three comments of mine ago. it's one of those things where it's not worth it to invest time into sitting there when there's a really obvious question and solution that are being overlooked until someone else does it

did i offend you or something?

no, not offended
i've just been party to sessions where people wanted to speak, but overlook and not even admit problems. like a conversation about the CHFI where someone said the...

12:24 PM
i don't know. i don't fully understand your comment.

helix distro more valid on windows b/c it had live memory tools there...
not related to you or ubuntu...just an observation

hmm alright. skipping because i can't fully comprehend

kk

Anyone called?
Hello all

12:45 PM
My Windows installation just died as I have replaced all copies of java*.exe on my much hated Windows system with a small utility that loads a driver to call keBugCheck() and a reason code corresponding to "Crappy operating System: BIOS denied execution"

...

jrg
@jokerdino should I risk the wayland PPA yet?
it hasn't been announced, but I think it might work.

@jrg i won't :p
it just looks too crazy to me :/

jrg
@jokerdino look at it this way: It will be a test to see just how good apt-btrfs-snapshot is. ;)

@ObsessiveFOSS well your first problem, you're using java

12:47 PM
@jrg i heard that was broken beyond fixing?
there are a couple of bugs on apt-btrfs

@aking1012 Yes, I am a Netbeans user.

i use eclipse. it was snark

jrg
@jokerdino I don't see any - bugs.launchpad.net/apt-btrfs-snapshot

jrg
@jokerdino well crap.

12:49 PM
lol

@jokerdino I am using Windows because it's the only thing I can crash without cat-ing /dev/zero to /dev/mem`.

jrg
Well, I guess I can always do manual snapshots.

@ObsessiveFOSS So, your username is misleading then.
@jrg good luck. hope you don't go insane any time soon.

@jokerdino I obsessively crash it 16 times a day.

jrg
I can always ask a question here on AU. ;)

12:51 PM
well ehm
@jrg heh, you are going for tumbleweed?

jrg
@jokerdino thats what bounties are for.

dammit
you know, i am going to camp in #ubuntuforums and tease them with bounties.

Q: How to make a btrfs snapshot?

MountainXMy /home partition consists of an entire physical disk. It is formatted as btrfs. I want to snapshot it. I'm confused regarding subvolume naming, in particular. I am aware that there are similar questions, but each similar question seems to be asking something different from what I'm asking (and...

or that.

commercial linux uses btrfs quite well.
and i think Marco, Stefano or popey have some experience on this too.

Love btrfs

jrg
12:54 PM
@jokerdino you know, i will laugh when they kickban you and charge you with rabble rousing.

dude :P

twobottu will too

@ObsessiveFOSS off topic. you may try SU chat.

 Root Access

For all you Super Users out there. You have backups, right?
just make sure not to make Willy show sad face or make SteveG and Balmer dance.

This user has 3 gold, 6 silver and 15 bronze medal

jrg
Another case of "the right place at the right time"

12:57 PM
??

@AnwarShah he just happened to be lucky

jrg
the three gold are all for the app indicator question.

Over at SU, they have somebody trying to become a moderator with no reasoning at all.

why is it that people like me who were brought up with the packaging evilness that is doing it all by hand believe that quickly breaks new debian packages
