12:13 AM
@EliahKagan: thanks for the reminder on that one, I really can't remember why I took that unusual disclaimer'd approach on it!

Ha, the embarrassment was jokingly, and the screen is really unusable for dual display, the crack is pretty damn bad, and these dead pixels are everywhere on the part you CAN see. I don't think there is anyway I would bring this in for Apple repair, if I really wanted to repair it, I would do it myself, yeah ~$90.00 for something like that with tools and screen included, but I've done screen repairs before and the macbook she has, I am 90% sure they don't have a service contract.

jrg
@Flabricorn You could do it.

I have to get paid first.
I have no budget for screen repairs right now.
Wait, maybe I misunderstood, what could I do?

jrg
@jokerdino where the captchas 2buntu or cloudflare?

Now that there are more people in here and not afk ...there are some questions needing close votes in Crusaders of the Lost Downboat.

jrg
12:18 AM
Let me finish this hard drive resize and I can join the fun

@jrg Cool thx. It's not a huge number of new questions (so far). Just a couple.

I will one day be skilled enough to understand and answer these questions.

izx
@EliahKagan On my way to the holy land...

jrg
Enlarging server hard drives is hairy work. @amithkk, I think we might have lost some data, I'm not sure yet though.

izx
@jrg What FS?

jrg
12:24 AM
@izx ext4

hmmm
do we consider the black screen question good enough yet?

jrg
can you give me another 15 minutes to finish this before I go and dupe them all? ;)

I don't think we're quite there yet

izx
@JorgeCastro IDK, been extended-AFK, let me check

but I would hope to be
I touched on it a bit today
iirc all we need is the AMD/Nvidia stuff

12:27 AM
Google Dashboard can be scary.
Man is there ever a lot of stuff there.

jrg

Note: Chrome will almost crash with 10k bookmarks.
I think it uses an SQLite database for bookmark storage so... there's still work to be done...

jrg
Ok, so i've got some time before it will freak out then.
It should use mongoDB.

Wait - 222 open tabs?

jrg
Yeah, that's the 17 and counting "different" computers I have "connected" to it.
AKA, all those Ubuntu+1 installs that I had to implode and start over on in the past 5 months.
right now I'm using Firefox though, so those numbers are off. ;P

12:32 AM
Same here :P
I have almost forgotten how to use Chrome.

jrg
Chrome dev channel segf'ing on 12.04 broke it for me, I had to use something else. Anything else. :P

WebGL stopped working for me in Chrome stable, so I switched to the dev. channel.
(Not that I use it at all...)

jrg
heh. :P

izx
@jrg How would ext4 be hairy unless you are trying with the online-resize kernel patch?

Q: Blank screen after installing nvidia restricted driver

LaMinifaldaI have a new machine with a MSI N560GTX Ti Twin Frozr II/OC graphic card and MSI PH67A-C43 (B3) main board. If i install the current nvidia restricted driver and reboot the machine on Natty (64-bit), then i only get a black screen after reboot and my system does not respond. I canĀ“t see the login...

can someone bounty that?
it's easily by far the most popular black screen nvidia question

12:39 AM
I ran into that problem again where the X11 display freezes and the cursor can't click anything.
This is starting to get annoying. Really annoying.

jrg
@JorgeCastro on it

izx
It needs severe editing before bountying: notice at the end:
"The original N560GTX had a hardware defect. Is is possible to close this question? THX!"

jrg
Whats it worth @JorgeCastro?

well if it's worthless, then let's just take it over and CW it?
@jrg 250ish?

izx
I wonder if we shouldn't just encompass it

jrg
12:41 AM
k

izx
into the blank screen canonical Q

well, it's worthless otherwise
might as well reuse it to be awesome if it's gotten so much traffic already

jrg
@JorgeCastro so you want me to bounty that nvidia one, let you guys do the editing, right?

izx
@jrg: that's fine

jrg
12:42 AM
ok, done.

feel free to blow away all the comments
@izx want me to edit?
@jrg hey in the description

jrg
It's now CW, and the comments should be gone.
@JorgeCastro yes?

say something like "the original question was a hardware problem, so we're reusing this question to be awesome for nvidia users..."
or something
so it's obvious why we're totally reediting the entire thing.

I think I need to dig up that pinned message about needing someone with a Mac to help compile NitroShare...

jrg
Derp, I'll need to refund the bounty and do it again. I can't do custom notices. :P

12:45 AM
I am looking for a Mac user willing to compile a Qt application (NitroShare). I have a Windows and Linux build but no Mac build.
6
There.

jrg
Ugh, this poor poor poor posts history.

izx
@JorgeCastro Is there a way to look at referrer history and see if the majority are simply from "nvidia black screen" and not "black screen after installing nvidia drivers"? Because the latter is fairly rare...

I dunno
I think having "nvidia" "black" and "screen" should be enough for google no?

jrg
@izx i'll see if that's possible, and if so I'll ask if I can share that.
@izx @JorgeCastro well, the short answer is i can't find that out. long answer is that we will probably be fine.

izx
@jrg Sharing isn't necessary, only whether we make this a generic "I have an Nvidia card and I get a black screen" question, or a more specific "...after I installed the restricted drivers" one.

jrg
12:53 AM
@izx i think we can be safe with a generic

agreed
edit to what you think it should be

izx
Good. Do keywords in titles have more SEO value in than the body/tags?

I'm going to start duping the other black screen ones to the one other questions
the first tag is always shown as the first result in google
unless it's in the title

jrg
we'll be fine, or at least we should be.

"drivers - Blank screen after installing nvidia restricted driver"

izx
12:55 AM
ok, will get to it in just a bit.

97 unanswered black screen questions
/me cracks his knuckles

hi

Hello

@jrg should I flag them or vote to close?

jrg
@JorgeCastro if you flag i'll be sure to see them, if you just VTC then I might miss a few.

1:03 AM
ok

jrg
Or you can toss them in regulators, that works too.

there's all of them basically

one quesstion

a bunch are pretty old too, abandonment probably

how can I see what is the video adapter that my ubuntu use right now?
I edited my rc.local
added echo off and I want to see if ubuntu use now my intel graphic

izx
1:05 AM
@Dave What does one have to do with the other? Need more context, ask a question with full details first?

and you answered there :D

izx
Ah it's YOU @Dave :P

aham :D
I added this line "echo OFF > /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch"
to my rc.local and I can feel a difference
before this I installed psensor that is showing me temp1 temp2
temp1 is ok
but temp2 gone crazy after I added that line and restarted ubuntu
it showing me now -128 and it's stay there
:))

added an ati tag
oh crap.
@jrg hah, we have ati AND amd video tags
we should probably merge those

jrg
@JorgeCastro AHHHHGGGG. MERGE THE PLAGUE.

1:10 AM
u can make only one
AMD
its the best choice

I need to get this working in Linux:

just symlink amd to ATI

Any suggestions?

no one calls it or googles for "amd video"

yes, non

1:11 AM
@jrg want to do it now or want me to meta it

but is a AMD Graphics
none*
anyway
what is the command in terminal to see my video adapter that ubuntu use?

jrg
@JorgeCastro I can do it now, i don't think AMD makes any other graphics cards, so it's kind of a no-brainer.

jrg
also merged amd-graphics into ati

EEEK! Why is everything using the KDE theme all of a sudden???

jrg
1:18 AM
what?

I know... weird.

jrg
@amithKK I can confirm that we lost no data. /home is now on a dedicated 12GB partition, and i think we're all happy.

1:45 AM
Hmm?

@jokerdino weird, blame amith for putting up stronger security

@izx that's because I've deleted it

i tried so hard to formulate a question, phrasing and rephrasing it and someone will just down vote it :((

I don't really have a problem with this question...except that it's really not on-topic for our site. Any good answer about how to accomplish this wouldn't really be Ubuntu-specific, and our community would probably not be able to maintain a reasonable answer-to-counterproductive-commentary ratio. I recommend closing as off-topic.

Q: How can I make a Hackintosh bootable USB using Ubuntu?

user70512I an using ubuntu 12.04 desktop. i want to install mac os x lion in my pc. can any one suggest me how to create bootable usb flash drive for mac os x lion in ubuntu 12.04.

izx
@EliahKagan ^^^ yes. I also note that this blatantly violates our meta-policy on not facilitating violations of copyright, licenses, etc. when the OP's intent is pretty clear.

@izx I don't want to get into a big discussion of copyright and hackintosh in main chat (as an Ubuntu community, we really don't need to form a consensus on that), but that is a lot more controversial than clear cut (you can search meta.apple.SE to see why). I think off-topic by not really being about Ubuntu is a lot better way to approach hackintosh questions here.

@EliahKagan either way i voted

Anyways, I have close voted too, so 3 more votes needed.

fair point...i didn't necessarily mean blob...just unpackaged proprietary product

izx
TBH, if that were the bar we should be throwing out all the Matlab questions first ;)

@izx actually, after I told him about this problem, he seems confuse because he just understand about windows, not in linux, so better I must manage it by myself.

Must use ancient distro -- HALP :/
Correct me if I'm wrong, but you can force static linking of even glibc right?

izx
8:59 AM
@aking1012 Sometimes, but usually it will fail. libc is sorta tied to the kernel -- there's a config parameter saying "here's the min kernel you must support, forget the older broken ones". You could compile libc from scratch and set that parameter to IDK, 2.4.0, and that might work, but I think you may run into ld-linux issues then...

@jokerdino just to say ... I tend not to delete "dupes" - because they are often useful for people using search engines that type that phrase. non constructive/non real etc are often good candidates especially if they are old. We need to be careful though to look at the number of views - if its high then maybe we need to carefully consider which other question can benefit from being merged with instead of deleting.
