and subsequently, why do newer packagers who USE quickly complain when they have to make packages by hand
:/

@ObsessiveFOSS admit it, she is cute.

@jokerdino I'm sorry, I do not understand that word.

@ObsessiveFOSS $fail

@ObsessiveFOSS what LOT said

@jokerdino now I wonder if someone makes that comment about you when you run... ;)
4

1:02 PM
I doubt I'd get far past her on AU.
3

@fossfreedom I look cute? o.O
@ObsessiveFOSS you might

just being politically correct

@fossfreedom pfft

@jokerdino True, there's a .02% chance I'd survive nominations, but then I'd never make it all the way to moderation.

jrg
@ObsessiveFOSS you'd be surprised, i got elected. sarcasm

1:03 PM
I have to attend to my studies 24/7 in the winter.

@ObsessiveFOSS lol. you always have a chance

@jokerdino I can barely moderate a two-person forum on a friend's dynamic IP address. There's nothing to moderate.

jrg

@ObsessiveFOSS welcome aboard, get with the program.

@ObsessiveFOSS alright then

@jrg I'd prefer a lightsaber.

1:06 PM
if i were a mod, there would be considerably less crap on AU

@jrg <redacted>

jrg
@LordofTime define "crap". Compared to SO, AU is perfect.

@jrg offtopics, NotAnAnswers, etc.

that was weirdly funny though.
and LOT is dumping flags now.

My account had a strong start(+45 then +75 rep), but now I am stagnant.

1:07 PM
just somehow gravitates towards the NotAnAnswers, and initiates $failpost.pwn()

/me just reflags on his hardwork.

jrg
@LordofTime Moderators are human exception handlers, not gods.

@jrg indeed. how often though do you see human exceptions which require attention :P

@ObsessiveFOSS rep is not everything. ok i kid.

Jon Skeet is God, the moderator is your common jedi.

1:08 PM
prefers to flag anyways
i've got enough stuff to deal with xD

@jokerdino Just noting progress...

Q: Remove Mint and restore windows's bootloader

Shrikant SharatI know removing ubuntu on a dual-boot machine and restoring the windows's bootloader is a simple task of popping in the windows disk and hitting on repair. I've done this before on my old laptop, quite a few times. But that was quite a long time ago. Now, the laptop is not in a very... pristine ...

^ offtopic for AU?
(they say Ubuntu initially, but later on say Linux Mint in the specs of what they've installed)

The actual problem is Mint. It's off topic. Ubuntu is just a note at the top.

@ObsessiveFOSS refresh, edits been pushed :P
and i agree its offtopic here
but might be suited for U&L

1:14 PM
I have seen.
It won't let me flag it as off-topic. There isn't an option for that.
Ah. I just haven't refreshed.

it is closed already

jrg
Handled. It's not migration worthy.

It is closed

It is closeworthy.

I am imagining clicking on the link to closevote.

1:16 PM
Get to 3k then?
If I can get 10k, you CAN get 3k. :P

wants 5k fast
I MUST GET MOAR REP!

@LordofTime @jorge is donating 250 rep to you.

@jokerdino I doubt it, and please do not upvote my posts based on "feeling sorry" or any other reason.

i know :P
@jokerdino i mentioned that yesterday :P

@LordofTime okay then

1:17 PM
/me still needs more rep
at least 100 more

@ObsessiveFOSS nope. i won't do that even if i feel sorry.

:P
goes around to pust better things

@jokerdino Thank you for abiding by the rules.

@ObsessiveFOSS but i might downvote your posts if they are crap.

@jokerdino Isn't that the reason downvotes exist? You obviously should.
No sarcasm was used during the last 15 minutes, including this post.

1:19 PM
and i would downvote anything as long as it looks even REMOTELY like crap. Even if it isnt.

@ObsessiveFOSS yeah i am a little obsessed with downvotes.

Q: What is the named daemon and why is it running?

HackToHellI want to know why the named daemon is running, do I need it running for my VPS to work properly ? Can I stop or remove it ?

i have a nice downvote number

@HackToHell apparently it does some DNS thing, i'd not remove it just yet.

@LordofTime I shut it down, everything still works, Is uses too much mem

1:20 PM
define "uses too much memory"
i've got 3 VPSes and named never takes up much memory
(you're probably also mixing shared vs. individualUsage memory)
(i.e. master process vs. child processes that share the memory)
(htop allows you to color those differently)
GO TO HELL CENTOS!!! SELINUX IS BREAKING IRCD!!!!!!!!!!!
</rage>

(post cool comments in parenthesis)

49 mb is quite large :/

(post random comments in brackets)

@HackToHell lets compare shall we?

no it doesn't

1:22 PM
nginx takes > 89.86MB on my system

@LordofTime ok,

PHP takes > 158.89MB

o.O

ZNC with 250 users on it takes over 250MB RAM

I do not have a 20$ per month VPS !!!

1:22 PM
ghost in the house. RUN!!!

and you say named takes 49MB.
@HackToHell i have a $12 a month VPS

I have just 256 mb of mem dude

yeah?
i dont have much more than that :P

@LordofTime And I have a 15$/year VPS

fortunately my VPS has swap, so...
most processes run in swap xD

jrg
1:23 PM
Sounds like disk IO problems then.

What the heck is going on in here
6
@jokerdino <3

I am testing my hardware

@HackToHell i'm just saying, in comparison, 49MB even on a low-ram VPS is not a true concern. I'd stop the service if it causes problems... but dont uninstall
i tried that once, it broke a few things including networking
hasnt tried since
@MarcoCeppi blame @Sathya for anything that happens here.

ok, I want a detailed info and why it runs, Google is not helping :/

1:25 PM
@LordofTime YA PANGED?

lol
So why do guys play blame game with @Sathya ?

because he is to blame?

@Sathya Does your VPS run the named daemon ??

@HackToHell i think that named is part of the DNS cacher

@HackToHell NOPE

1:26 PM
that exists even on ubuntu Desktop now, since 12.04

CAPS LOCK FTW

SO MUCH EASIER TO TYPE, YA'LL

jrg
@LordofTime no, i think its dnsmasq, not named.

don't make me flag you for mod attention, @Sathya

1:27 PM
@jokerdino I KNOW DUDE, TYPING ON BASIS OF THAT

If only I could ban you. <3
3

@LordofTime k

@jrg you certain? i've got named on this desktop here...
and not dnsmasq

I TOO LIKE CAPS :)

jrg
@LordofTime I'm certain, I don't have named.

My caps lock is not broken BTW.

(i'm guessing named is part of bind)

@MarcoCeppi MOD ABUSE, I SAY!

@Sathya AND YOU HAVE NO DNS PROBLEMS .... SO DIE NAMED !

(ok before you put in the banhammer, I'm kidding :P )
4

1:27 PM
blames @LordofTime for pinging @Sathya

@HackToHell Word of caution

blames @Marco for making @LordOfTime have to ping @Sathya

My Caps Lock is a mechanical toggle, all in hardware, that holds my Shift key while it is enabled.

@MarcoCeppi ok ok ok

@MarcoCeppi you forgot caps lock?

1:28 PM
@jokerdino :) my man

Named is all DNS stuff, if you're hosting a nameserver on your server it'll stop working. Some companies require you to run your own nameserver for your domains on a VPS

O_O

floats away

drags @MarcoCeppi back in.

@MarcoCeppi orly? i just use third party DNS xD

1:29 PM
you must not work today.

Right, some people use other DNS services

why do you have bind running anyway?

@Sathya bind is evil

I experimented with running my own DNS server, decided not to & got rid of bind

@MarcoCeppi I do not host a nameserver ....

1:30 PM
only mod votes are binding. so no!
<insert more random gibberish here>

@Sathya Without any problems ??

@HackToHell yes.

@HackToHell then you can likely remove it. Though you'll want to make sure dnsmasq is installed or if that's using it. That does DNS lookup caching for your machine

floats away now

1:31 PM
And I got rid of bind without any problems, get lost evil memory sucking binding virus

@MarcoCeppi this

@MarcoCeppi k

@Sathya GOOD! bind needs to burn since it is EVIL to configure.

I like bind :( I run my own nameservers with it

I found it was quite easy to config :s
my needs were basic anyway...

1:33 PM
@Sathya Why does php always run for ya ? i.stack.imgur.com/MSgnC.png

@Marco i'll pay you $20 to set up bind on my dedi, after i get it up and running on business-class internet (Comcast is evil slow at this). i've not yet been able to configure it correctly myself, so....

dnsmasq locally ->> google/opendns. DONE.
2

@JorgeCastro this

@HackToHell php? you've highlighted bind there

i don't even know what this stuff is but I agree with Jorge.

1:34 PM
@Sathya It's from my question, I was talking about your screeny, it had php running, php rarely shows up in mine

@HackToHell it's Nginx using php-fpm
php-fpm spawns up php workers that wait to accept requests

what @MarcoCeppi mentioned.

@MarcoCeppi So it needs to run always ? I really do not know about this so I am talking shit

@MarcoCeppi that is the most epic way of making PHP work with nginx... i hate these people that try to create spawnfcgi work with PHP... its EVIL
@MarcoCeppi not to mention the nginx team recommends using php-fpm if you have it anyways
should know, he works with that team with bug triaging

@MarcoCeppi Is that more efficient that lighttpd and php-cgi ?

1:36 PM
@HackToHell it's pretty much the most efficient way to run php with nginx. Put microcaching with Nginx and you've got a rather efficient low memory footprint

[REDACTED]

php-fpm uses php-cgi (more or less) it's a matter of taste, preference, and tuning at this point

Then I am okay with lighttpd running with 5 mb of ram

@HackToHell i think that @Sathya just likes the attention... and its one of those AU-centric random things we do xD

What he said.

1:38 PM
@LordofTime k

ohey, its @Alvar
long time no see

hehe :D
@LordofTime exactly what I said an hour ago :P
hi btw :D

back to floating

@LordofTime jb sathya xD
Is there anything else like mc (Midnight Commander)?
And something awesome from my fb feed

@LordofTime been learning php and some security! :)
like the risks with csrf :)

1:43 PM
(((1==2)==true)==true)==true

@ObsessiveFOSS typo 10==2

@Alvar Edited.

@ObsessiveFOSS (false) == true? false. false == true? false. false == true? false. false == true? false.
so i fail to see the point

me too...

I think this is a dupe:

Q: What is the advantage of using symbolic link?

Ant'sI'm a new user to Ubuntu. And I do install some software. I see many tutorials uses symbolic link to a directory. Like this : ln -s Are there any advantages of using this way? Or it is the way it should be done?

1:46 PM
@nitstorm dupe of..?

google it

Q: What is different symbolic link with hard link after unlik?

KayKay1. #include <stdio.h> #include <unistd.h> void main(){ link("foo", "bar"); unlink("foo"); if(open("bar", 1) < 0) printf("open error\n"); else printf("open succeeded\n"); } 2. #include <stdio.h> #include <unistd.h> void main(){ s...

@nitstorm i don't necessarily agree, but...

@LordofTime It refers to the crappy math joke publicized on artofproblemsolving.com (Actually an interesting math website) in the username of 1=2

@nitstorm I don't think it's a duplicate of that question. That (proposed dupe target) asking a very specific question, which got very specific answers. And it's a question about C programming.

1:47 PM
eeek.

@EliahKagan this

jrg
good thing I wasn't sure about it. :P

@EliahKagan There was the same question asked earlier, and it got linked as a duplicate of this , case in question
7
Q: Symbolic links vs Hard links

JM at Work Possible Duplicate: what is different symbolic link with hard link after unlik? I just read the manpage for symlinks, but I still dont get it ... so hardlinks are pointers to the file/dir. Then symlink is a pointer to a pointer? Whats the use of a symlink then? Why/when should I use on...

@EliahKagan but that's asking the same question

jrg
1:48 PM
I've reopened this because it deserves a good generic answer on this issue (unlike the previous question that was an obscure C example). — Oli May 18 '11 at 14:50

what the post you think is a dupe is not asking the comparison

hmmmm.....

jrg
(relax, it's confusing me too)

woho! no pressure! :D

lol :P so is this a dupe of this ?

1:50 PM
@nitstorm i guess

@EliahKagan searching for the question you're asking about in that comment yields tons of "my CD won't boot questions" so I'll make a canonical one.

@jokerdino Thanks fixing the "dupe of" comment

jrg
@nitstorm Yes.

@JorgeCastro Cool thx.

@Jorge link to the canonical one as I will upvote it
when you're done

1:51 PM
@nitstorm Sounds good to me. Will close-vote.

Q: How do I install Ubuntu from an USB drive?

Sorin SbarneaI tried to use the usb-creator.exe from Ubuntu 10.10 desktop i386 ISO image and it does create an USB stick that doesn't boot. When I try to boot from it I get: "Operating System not found". I try to do this from Windows 7 x64. I'm not looking to create a live Ubuntu media, only an installation ...

perhaps we can rescue this one in the process

I've never understood what a canonical answer is.

@nitstorm i posted a new comment.
@Alvar generalized answer

aha....

@jokerdino Yup, saw it :) Deleted my prev comment :)

1:52 PM
@Jorge would you consider this, which you bountied as a canonical question/answer about bug categorization and life cycle?

guys, stop talking in a million chat rooms. i can't catch up

(EVIL KEYBOARD IS EVIL)

jrg
@jokerdino That sounds like a you problem.

consider it for what?

@jrg @jokerdino this

1:53 PM
@EliahKagan hmm, this exists already: help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation

@Jorge as a canonical question about bug categorization :P
(as my edit says?)

sure

eek, helpdoc 404 o.O
doesnt like IE as it throws these random errors

@jrg @LordofTime :P

@LordofTime IE?!?!?!? IE?????

1:54 PM
@Alvar internet explorer. for ages

@Alvar restrictive enterprise-grade windows-centric office workspace.

@jokerdino I know. that was my point...

@Alvar i'm not allowed to use firefox basically

@LordofTime gosh...

now you know my pain

1:55 PM
@LordofTime firefox? use chrome ;)

actually you dont

@JorgeCastro This is the kind of information I was thinking we needed, when I posted this comment. But the image is really old (in particular, that menu item doesn't say "CD" anymore.

@LordofTime I do we got only IE in school

@Alvar can't install software, and cant get ffox or chrome past security screening

well some computers has firefox actually :D
@LordofTime I know...
same rules at my University..

1:56 PM
@Alvar If only there were an ActiveX plugin version of Firefox, it could be run in Internet Explorer. ;-)

@EliahKagan oooo sneaky! :D

@EliahKagan feel free to edit it in!

@JorgeCastro Do you think I should add a link to it, to the question...or include the information inline in that answer?

Hi all.

well if you had two computers near you you could boot form a USB stick and then use Ubuntu from there. they wouldn't know if you did it if you only ran it from a live CD. :)

1:58 PM
I am quickly becoming pro linking in this question

@RolandTaylor Hi.

if we inline every possible combination we'll be doomed

@RolandTaylor hi :)

@EliahKagan hey :D
@Alvar mew

@LordofTime hmm....

1:58 PM
@JorgeCastro OK. Will do. In any case, for inlining it may be better to have a new image (like the one we do have lower in the answer).

@RolandTaylor ? :O

Can you answer this? How to add access controls to Accessibility Options? http://askubuntu.com/questions/70312/how-to-add-access-controls-to-accessibility-options?atw=1 #preferences

The interrupter strikes again.

@Alvar lol

@RolandTaylor I still don't get it....

2:00 PM
@Alvar it's the call a cat makes - and it's used in online conversations as a friendly response :P
(You don't chat around much do you?)

ok all we really need is AMD/Nvidia resources on this and we can start deduping

@RolandTaylor not with cats! ;)

your post is well said about email

All we need with Thunderbird is for some of its addons to become built in as options, like the conversations addon.
@Alvar lol...

o.O

2:03 PM
@RolandTaylor that made me actually laugh! :)
isn't Takkat around?
I was in germany just a few days ago :P

<announcement from me>

drum roll.....

We have BarCamp Bangalore 12 coming soon on August 25, 2012 at SAP Labs, Whitefield, Bangalore. If you're in/around Bangalore, I would like you all to come :)

2:06 PM
oo india... a bit far to bike.... :)

@Sathya no thanks, i'm good. I'll air-drop a package to there though, it'll be a box of packing peanuts, just so I can say "But I sent you something!"

:P

:D

@LordofTime that'll be much appreciated ;)

2:08 PM
geez...
more NaA flags :/
should start staying away from /review

2:32 PM
3 more close-votes needed here. (As @LordofTime pointed out, the OP says the suggested dupe target fixed the problem.)

jrg
done

geez i think i'll need to make a coffee run
is tired
anyways... I think i'll go get some epiccoffeeanddonuts today...

tis an easy badge :P

jrg
Only around here.
Other places you can be in chat for months and never get it.

2:42 PM
indeed.
but Ask Ubuntu is more fun that way :p

@Sathya got it too....
the AU chat is a mix of lol cats, random stuff, internet humor and a little bit about the actual AU site.

@Alvar and the random bouts of the End of Time.

@EliahKagan Eliah, the outspoken chat you invited me too, is it for close votes only?

@Alvar close votes, down votes, etc.

@Alvar Mainly. But it would also make sense to suggest posts that need reopening, or improvement.

2:55 PM
i think of it as the new "Ask Flaggers A Question" channel
@EliahKagan or asking about whether something actually is worthy of closing or flagging or the likes :P
its still a place to go for burning Evil things, so...
:p

@EliahKagan cool, so it's a serious room with and unserious topic! AWESOME! :)

3:26 PM
@Sathya I now envy you for a few bytes on some database, somewhere in the cloud, created a long, long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away.

Was sni-qt ever backported to Natty?

@GeorgeEdison it wasn't
$ rmadison sni-qt
    sni-qt | 0.2.5-0ubuntu1 |       oneiric | source, amd64, armel, i386, powerpc
    sni-qt | 0.2.5-0ubuntu3 | oneiric-updates | source, amd64, armel, i386, powerpc
    sni-qt | 0.2.5-0ubuntu3 |       precise | source, amd64, armel, armhf, i386, powerpc
    sni-qt | 0.2.5-0ubuntu3 |       quantal | source, amd64, armel, armhf, i386, powerpc

Will it run on Natty?

@GeorgeEdison Nice work on NitroShare! I really like the idea. I haven't much use or it right now, but a few years ago that would have saved me a lot of time. thank you! I've started on translating it to Swedish, somebody might need that one day. Good luck with the development! :)

@GeorgeEdison it isn't the repo. but you might try compiling?

3:38 PM
@Alvar Thanks.
@jokerdino I don't have a Natty VM at the moment, unfortunately.

aww

Do you remember if tray icons still showed up in the panel in Natty?

there were gnome-panel applets
so i am guessing yes

Okay, in that case sni-qt really wasn't needed.
(At least not for Natty.)

Good luck.

3:43 PM
oh no I made a typo in a starred post! nooooo the shame! :/

TAKKAT!!!!

jrg
I'm fine, thanks though.

4:49 PM
@jrg so I'm trying to piece together simply in a very specific order so it can be "simply was built using simply" kind of like code::blocks

@Elia
bah
@EliahKagan Can you move the relevant parts of your answer to the accepted answer on the older question? The one about the EULA

BBT
Good Night

@aking1012 Code blocks, or like rails generators?
