12:00 AM
@izx To some extent, yes.

Well to be fair...for 12.04 stable it has been intel users beware, judging from the qa..

jrg
Well, fun.

izx
@jokerdino i915 is the generic kernel module name -- I doubt you have an i915 chipset in reality...

it's everything related to new kernel modules...to be expected

12:03 AM
@izx @aking1012 oops.

izx
@aking1012 orly? Has been rock-solid except for one OGL bug for me

jrg
Yup. I'll fix them easily enough. Hopefully...

I was referring to his particular error messages

izx
@jokerdino - you have an Inspiron 15R, right?

14R

izx
12:05 AM
14R -- I'm researching something, can you pastebin sudo lspci -vv and sudo lshw if you don't mind?

http://paste.ubuntu.com/1083669/

izx
Many thanks!

jrg
although it might just end up destroying my computer, we'll see. :)

Trying to get 200 rep in a day is harder then I thought. Especially on your first day >.>

jrg
@jokerdino one of these days the SU mods are going to get really mad about you trying to steal their best users, and then I'll hear alllll about it.
@CoreyWhitaker i've hit it once.

12:12 AM
@jrg Dude, I already snagged Sathya into AU :P

I think I've done it about three times, but never b/c I was trying

@CoreyWhitaker I can't agree more.

jrg
@jokerdino Somehow Bill the Lizard started showing up more as well.

@jrg - That's awesome. I've been answering all the questions I can but most of the people had 1 rep and didn't upvote it or choose it as the answer.

Goes through Corey's answers

jrg
12:12 AM
And BoltClock. Granted, I did kind of twist his arm about that. ;P

@jrg I don't remember annoying them on Twitter o.O

jrg
Why, is that what normally gets them hooked?

No, just wondering.
I harass every other SE user everywhere possible :D

jrg
Well, that spelled disaster for my ATI card (@jokerdino)
the intel machine seems to be fine, no problems.

:@
I don't have any graphics card.
reboot time.

jrg
12:22 AM
well then I think you'll be fine.

izx
@CoreyWhitaker You have to be a generalist and answer lots of questions.

not even an integreated ones?
@CoreyWhitaker When i've done it, its days when i've answered 4-5 questions, had at least one accept, and I average about 5 votes per question.

@izx - I'm trying to only answer questions that I have a decent knowledge about. I hate to barely answer a question and only waste someone's time.

jrg
well, since VirtualBox is broken, I need to go back to the old kernel. Don't have time to play around with VBox and DKMS.

Or i'm totally high and sarcastic as hell.
@jrg: dkms installation tended to be dead simple.

izx
12:24 AM
@CoreyWhitaker Well, that was implied -- generalist meaning you have to have decent knowledge about lots of things -- to be able to hit 200 consistently :)

(oh, not here. I swear half my rep here is from spelling cleanups. MOST of my rep is off SU ;p)
I really need to get back to having a dedicated *buntu box ><

@izx - I see, I'm still new to Ubuntu but I have very generic knowledge about linux itself. Just mostly geared towards Red Hat based systems.

@CoreyWhitaker: a lot of skills transfer.

izx
That's good, we have lots of CLI questions

@CoreyWhitaker Sounds like me except for the RH part.
Btw, you are already on your second day.

jrg
12:26 AM
@CoreyWhitaker once you learn where things are stored, and how to fix dpkg you'll be set then. :)

hm, how are we on subjective software suggestions?

@JourneymanGeek we don't care unless it becomes really messy. :P

ahh, right

@JourneymanGeek Yea, I'm kind of noticing that. It's just some of the most basic things have changed between the two in my opinion.

(One thing i have an issue with here - not quite gotten used to the community standards. Its easier when i can VTC instead of flag)
Unless you guys want me to flag em ;p

12:28 AM
@jokerdino - Yea, I just noticed that. I've joined within the last 24 hours so I'm assuming it's going by day of the week and not hours on the site.

The former.

@jrg - I had to fix dpkg once and it was a pain. By the way, because of that I hate dropbox on linux.

@jrg --^ what do you think?

Hmm

input from others is welcome too...

12:37 AM
No idea what that is.

jrg
@aking1012 That'd be a good start.

@jokerdino simply...it's like quickly, but it works that's the goal anyway

@aking1012 heh cheeky

jrg
See, i'd be more of a "simply new $projectname" type thing, where it then asks a series of questions like what language, and then what kind of templating system (or whatever), and then what test framework you want.

@jrg under configuration, i'm trying to put in "command that does action X" that way you could add empty templates and populate them (read as easily extensible). a cli interface would be simple enough the way i'm trying to put it together. it would basically be simply project action param
this way, if i make python, git, and ppa...someone that like bizarre things could add bzr quite easily, and someone that wants ruby could do that quite easily too.

jrg
@jokerdino working on it right now.

jrg
Oops, wrong window.

heheh

jrg
trying to keep all my local clones up-to-date. :P

12:48 AM
now that QQ kernel works fine in Precise, time to upgrade to QQ

good morning

good morning.

jrg
@jokerdino i'm not brave enough to upgrade to QQ.
or rather, I don't have time to upgrade. :P

:P I am in U+1 team and it is time I do something :P

jrg
@jokerdino all done with that.

12:55 AM
What? Oh the kernels

jrg
you and I have the same graphics card kernel modules.

I just cleaned up two questions from error tag.

jrg
WHY CANT IT DIE?!!!

@jrg heh I just noticed. Nice to know =)

all the effort from earlier....it was nukified

12:59 AM
Fixing Mythbuntu Desktop!

Good luck

@Flabricorn - Good luck!

Corey helped meeeee!
Reboot time.

I'm really curious about what Mythbuntu is now >.>

Media Ubuntu

1:01 AM
Oh, that's cool! So, basically like an ubuntu distro tailored to media streaming? Or more so editing?

@jrg Yes, as to the hanging out question. Forgot to logoff from Saturday.

@CoreyWhitaker It;s just mythtv on Ubuntu

Q: Bulletproof way to select a field in bash

soandosMy goal is deceptively simple (at least to me). I wish to take the output of ls -l or ls -lh and select just one field. I am looking for this to be as bulletproof as possible, by which I mean, assume that filenames can have a variable number of spaces, not everything in the field has the same le...

we need awk

I just got that...
I mean, I seriously just answered that question.

awk is almost a programming language ;/

1:05 AM
I don't know much about it to be honest

@aking1012 yep i totally agree

So this is weird, I also decided to remove Lubuntu and xubuntu in trade of gnome... but they're still there... and it also says when I try to remove them that they're not installed. I still get errors...

According to the man page it is a programming language... go figure lol

lol
it is!
Technically so is bash
and don't forget you can get a shell that works in C

i hate these

1:07 AM
@Flabricorn - sudo apt-get autoremove to clean out old unused packages that get orphaned.

heh. i consider it a scripting language bordering on programming...but i'm sure some people disagree. anything that interfaces with native code directly is a programming language. otherwise it's a scripting language
python has ctypes. awk does not.
ruby has swig...so it counts

snackadoodlepop@snackadoodlepop-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get autoremove
[sudo] password for snackadoodlepop:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 13 not upgraded.

bah. i don't have much info on this

@Flabricorn - Hrrrmmm... you may have exhausted my knowledge on the subject :(

@Flabricorn that usually indicates either package conflicts or dist-upgrades that need doing

1:10 AM
Wait, no the Uodate Manager is working, only crash report error on the update manager.
It worked, cool, thanks again!

@Flabricorn If you just removed the metapackages (xubuntu-desktop and lubuntu-desktop), that will not generally remove Xfce and LXDE and accompanying apps, even with sudo apt-get autoremove (though that occasionally works). See Getting Back to a Pure Unity Gnome on Ubuntu.

Thank you Elijah.

we need a canonical answer on-site that cites psychocats
3

@EliahKagan - Thank you for all the edits you've been making to my posts.

@Flabricorn You can run sudo apt-get upgrade to see what packages are the ones that have newer versions (or apt-get -s dist-upgrade).
@CoreyWhitaker No problem. I edit a lot, these days. :-)
@aking1012 I think we do have an answer that cites that, but I'm not sure.

1:13 AM
@EliahKagan - So I've noticed, I really do appreciate it though. I'm still learning my way around this site.

@aking1012 Maybe not...searching AU for pureubuntu only gives a couple hits and they're not great canonical questions/answers.

Oh and to those that were paying attention earlier (or care) I'm up to 100 points for the day

@EliahKagan I'm pretty sure we have one, but it's broken up into a thousand questions (by a user i won't call out by name, but it's one guy). we should have a single answer that is "I borked my DE. I want ubuntu-desktop back"

jrg
@aking1012 oh, i know who you're talking about.

@aking1012 It could be even more general, and refer to all the psychocats "pure *buntu" pages.

1:15 AM
yeah...think i made my point. i just think we need something of that flavor
if we had one, i could go on a vtc as dupe rampage
\o/ for a spike in linkedin views

jrg
keeps checking mylinuxrig.com for something special
I can hardly wait for this article to get up! :D

??
can you CW a question?

jrg
Yeah sure, link?

Noob question... What does "CW a question" mean?

jrg
Community Wiki.

1:23 AM
Community WIki
OH.
Beat me too it.

no i meant if i were to write up a question and want to make it the canonical one...eliah is awesome at the editing, and i think something that general should be CW

to*

@aking1012 we already have the question on the site

@jokerdino orly?

jrg
@Flabricorn you pick up fast.

1:24 AM

Q: How to completely remove desktop?

BЈовићI wanted to switch to xfce (I had kde and gnome installed), and I did this : sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop sudo apt-get remove kubuntu-desktop sudo apt-get remove ubuntu-desktop sudo apt-get autoremove but to my surprise, I could still pick gnome, kde plasma, etc during the log in. S...

@Flabricorn up arrow or the little drop-down at the left lets you edit something in stack chat

@jokerdino is too targeted. wasn't the user i was talking about, but the tags are right for the proposed question

Unrelated: This question should be closed, as it's both off-topic (not really related to Ubuntu) and not-constructive (better suited for a forum rather than a QA site):

@EliahKagan Thanks once again

Q: Has anyone taken the LPI essentials certification exam?

SeanOIf so, was it difficult? Any tips for a newer linux user? Thanks Sean

izx
^^^ OT-close-goated
@CoreyWhitaker, you're doing a great job so far! Keep it up...

It's sort of OT, but I think it's a good-natured question

jrg
I think it's a dupe.

@aking1012 What?

@aking1012 Oops sorry had to run to get something and that was quicker. I'll edit next time.

1:28 AM
It was just a heads-up in case you didn't know, not a criticism

@izx - Thanks! I'm getting off work soon and my fiancee probably won't let me hang out in here so I'll see you guys tomorrow when I come in

see ya

heh. have a better one @CoreyWhitaker

@CoreyWhitaker All errors no longer pop up, everything works fine, gonna stick with Gnome, no issues yet.

@aking1012 Thanks

1:29 AM
Goodbye! :)

@Flabricorn That's great. I like GNOME... just not overly fond of Unity but that's personal >.>

@CoreyWhitaker Yeah, Unity was never my thing, if I'm using linux, I don't want my desktop to look like a smartphone.

^-- that

jrg
and once again:
5 hours ago, by jrg
@CoreyWhitaker unity is all well and good, as long as you agree with it. It is very opinionated.

ragequit

jrg
1:31 AM
;)

@jrg I thought he was talking about the Game Engine.

everybody is just trying to get ahead of this surface/touch thing
when did @blueXrider sneak in
o/ btw

jrg
@blueXrider Howdy!

heya @blueXrider

Half an hour til I get off, think I can get 70 rep in that time?

1:34 AM
@aking1012 Windows 8 - A tables OS without flash, ability to run applications not licensed by microsoft, all in all a terrible OS. Google has the Android, Apple has the iPad, and Canoical has Unity. Did I spell that right?
@CoreyWhitaker No doubt in my mind.

jrg
@Flabricorn Canonical doesn't have unity shipped on a actual "mobile" device yet.

@jrg - Doesn't Dell offer laptops with Ubuntu preloaded?

i think unity is an attempt to hugify menus/buttons so when upstream does the hard part of getting touch working, it just works
note to my cynicism

I know, what aking said.

jrg
@CoreyWhitaker sorta.

1:36 AM
I know not many people would choose it but it's still there... if they're still doing it. I know they stopped at some point.

It's essentially the attempt to give Ubuntu the OSX feel combined with smartphone looking buttons allowing the interface to look eye-catching, and simple compared with Gnome or one of the more professional looking distributions.

@CoreyWhitaker Yeah, there was some debate about them being on the "sponsored vendor" page on ubuntu.com a while back

People who hate Unity, time to stop it.
says KDE user

I don't hate it, and I don't openly often complain about it.

I don't hate unity. I just think it was too much too fast and forced as default

1:38 AM
I just prefer something that I know my way around.

@jokerdino KDE looks too much like Windows imo

I began with 10.04.

OMG, what's wrong with you people?

KDE looks alright, It's got a familiar feel to the Windows user.

Stop having problems with everything.

1:39 AM
@Flabricorn I began with fedora 6 or so

jrg
@jokerdino OMG UNITY LOVER! WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?!
4

heh :p

I don't have a problem with KDE... I'm just saying it looks like Windows to me.

I wish I could star that more than once

Oh, and I started with FC 12 or something I don't remember. My boss made it a requirement for my job

jrg
1:40 AM
I just don't care what I use, as long as it has keyboard shortcuts that A. make sense and B. are discoverable. I don't want to have to wander around inside the source code to find them.

@jokerdino You're right, we should all be more polite, calm, and keep our complaints to ourselves, bottled up with our custom desktop environments.

And nothing should ever override alt...ever

@Flabricorn bah I was just showing how everyone has their own complaints.

There's some kind of button in Unity that shows all of them. I only find it by accident. Kind of like the room of requirement in Hogwarts

Just hold the super key and wait

jrg
1:41 AM
@CoreyWhitaker press and hold the "Super"/"Windows" key.

There ya go

@CoreyWhitaker My entire Mac experience.

jrg
I started with Fedora 4.

@jrg Thank you

A couple of users don't like unity. Another one thinks Windows and KDE is similar. :/
I think I am in the wrong room in the wrong time.

1:42 AM
At least nobody recommended cinammon from ppa

jrg
SUBJECTIVE. ARGUMENATIVE. CLOSE IT AS OFF-TOPIC AND NOT A REAL QUESTI- oh wait, I can't close chat rooms without raising a ruckus on meta. sigh

My edits have to be peer-reviewed?

jrg
@CoreyWhitaker until you reach 2K, yes.

@jrg i think that's the move on signal

jrg
It's a automated "trust" system to prevent people from abusing it.
@aking1012 You read me loud and clear. Well, I don't care that much, it's just a debate that will go in circles.

1:43 AM
@jrg - Makes sense. Anyone wanna approve my edit?

jrg
Just like hedgehacking about 15 months ago.
(although none of you were around for the hedgehacking days. sigh them were the good 'ol days. :))

NOOOO
Here is actually where I started with linux.
Actually, I started with Red Hat, way back when, moved to Win 95 because it was all I knew. Started with 10.04, found it difficult to use on my tablet PC, back to Win 7, got a free netbook, Win XP, broke XP, back to Win 7, tried 11.10... "What the fuck happened to ubuntu? Why is it mac?"
Didn't like the functionality, back to Win 7, got a PoweMac G5 for $40, OSX for about two months, got a free PC, back to Win 7, tried Wubi w/ 12.04, loved it, slow old PC sucks, back to Mac, Install 12.04 over OSX and here I am today.

where are all these free PCs coming from...i need to know where you're lottery tickets/dumpsters are located

jrg
@aking1012 cleveland.
well, I think.

Well, I had a grandfather pass away, left no will, mother said "Here, if you can fix the LCD, you can have." Other PC was a Celron from '05. First android equal in processing power.

1:50 AM
oh...in about a month i'll be in IN if anyone wants to say o/

Sure!

230 rep today, no badge... I officially have a sad.

it takes 24 hours to update...well not exactly, but you got the point. as long as you don't have a serial upgoat reversal it'll happen

Herm.

1:51 AM
Holy shit!

What'd you break?

@aking1012: I think we have one or two PCs dumped a year. I've only bothered to recover one
I MAY have dibs on the office PCs once dad's decided what to do with them tho

Oh yeah, I was thinking of the reddit upvote system, keep forgetting that these give you like ten per upvote.

izx
The best desktop environment is NO desktop environment.

1:52 AM
I was like: 230? Whao!
But still 23 upboats.

@izx i go back to my blender comment

I seriously joined less then 12 hours ago and I have 311 rep

izx
Nice! Like I said, not hard to achieve as long as you know bits of lots of things and have the time ;)

Heh. "Removed"
I joined 5 days ago. 42 Rep. Not the best with Ubuntu or helping people though.

jrg
Time is the big thing.

saying you should only use command-line editors is a bit like saying don't use blender, real 3d modelers only plot 3d models using cartesian coordinates

NO TIME IS A SMALL THING. LIKE GLOBAL WARMING, OR THE DEATH OF A PET.

same with DE

Can you answer this? What fanless ATI Radeon cards work with the open-source drivers? http://askubuntu.com/questions/63314/what-fanless-ati-radeon-cards-work-with-the-open-source-drivers?atw=1 #drivers

@Flabricorn I'ld take the death of a relative better than the death of a pet.

@aking1012 Well I wasn't serious, I take global warming to be a big thing, and I have the same opinion about the pet. It's a tighter bond for me.

1:57 AM
oh, global warming is kind of funny. since thawing of ice is grossly endothermic i think that's how the next ice-age happens
try pouring cold water into a bucket of ice...then pouring hot water into a bucket of ice. give it about 5-25 seconds depending on the size of the bucket and see which one is colder

jrg
"I'm Al Gore, and I invented the internet and global warming."

I know I'm TOTALLY doing my part by running four computers simultaneously and a full AC to cool them down.

jrg
@Flabricorn totally doing your part.

I've got a massive video card that requires a separate power supply for my sys to boot. I'm still ahead of the Gore mansion though

@jrg Totally.
:)

izx
1:59 AM
@aking1012 OK, I'll narrow the scope to servers :P
