12:00 AM
now it'd be a cruel twist if they don't have enough board members for quorum

jrg
That would be cruel. ::

Oli
@MarcoCeppi How'd it go? Has it gone yet?

@Oli it's only just started
patience...

jrg
He's last too. :P

Oli
What's the IRC room? Can we listen in?

12:04 AM
it's #ubuntu-classroom @oli
sorry

jrg
@Oli #ubuntu-meeting on freenode.

brain fail

Oli
lol

it's #ubuntu-meeting
yeah

jrg
haha no worries stefano. :D

12:05 AM
I was reading through the old classroom stuff today (:

Oli
Are peons (non-members, people not involved in the proceedings, ie me) allowed in?

jrg
@Oli Yeah, it's expected to be that way.

@Oli it's expected that there are people there to support them
and it's a public channel
just don't interrupt :P

jrg
@ajmitch See? I've already made a few typos, and I'm not even up yet! takes a deep breath

@jrg you can edit them here, you can't on IRC :)

Oli
12:06 AM
<paultag> WOOO!!!!!!!!
<paultag> I'm here to cheer for tenach!
Rofl

jrg
@ajmitch Yeah, I need to relax. :D

Oli
Cheering seems to be part of the process :)

I don't know why you're worried :)
I'm not even directly an ubuntu member anymore, I have indirect membership through core-dev

jrg
@ajmitch I'm not. <_>

Oli
@jrg Are you up today?

12:08 AM
@Oli he's up next

jrg
Yeah, I am.

Oli
Is that too late for an on-wiki testimonial?

jrg
Nope, I'll re-link to it.
(as part of the introduction process)

@Oli easiest just to scream wildly your support in the irc channel

jrg
Yeah, that'd probably work best.

12:09 AM
the board may have gone over the wiki pages prior to the meetings, or they may look now

jrg
True.

they seem to be moving slowly today

Do you know any ways to remove shift from terminals shortcuts ?

jrg
@rabidmachine9 not without breaking a lot of stuff.

it gets annoying sometimes

12:13 AM
One down

jrg
8 to go for you.

@jrg you're up!

jrg
Yup.

I can already see what will go wrong

time to heckle

12:14 AM
what's going on?
can I play?
:P

IRC meeting

in which channel?

Oli
#ubuntu-meeting

jrg
Ok, that was a lame "few words". :D

Oli
I thought you'd George VI'd it for a minute :)

12:16 AM
I wrote a paragraph
Maybe I should tone that down.

for a second I thought he'd decided to go off to get a sandwich & a beer :)

Oli
rofl

jrg
@ajmitch haha

hah :D

Oli
Woot.

12:18 AM
@jrg see, that wasn't hard

jrg
@ajmitch :)

awesome James, nice work

jrg
Thanks Stefano. :)

whew, two down in only 20 mins :P

Oli
:)

jrg
12:19 AM
:)

what kind of meeting is that?

@MarcoCeppi at this rate you may be deferred, sorry
@rabidmachine9 ubuntu membership board

what are they voting about?
ok

Oli
So about payment for my testimonials... I accept Visa and Mastercard and anything that Paypal takes.
2
@rabidmachine9 Ubuntu membership

12:21 AM
Should have applied earlier, always next month :D

I expect rep & badges for my help :)

it's ok :)

How long are these? only 60 mins?

Oli
I'll be honest, I was expecting more of an interview-style process. A few questions, "My computer won't turn on, how do I fix it?!1", etc.
Oh there you go

@MarcoCeppi generally yes

12:26 AM
They should make these longer, just sayin' :P

@MarcoCeppi that'd burn out board members faster
this one has a high number of applicants
@Oli they rely on testimonials from people, given the very broad range of ways that people can contribute to ubuntu & get membership

Oli
Fair enough. But anybody could write a testimonial "Oli shoots laser beams from his, ..." etc.

they also love locos by the looks of it

Oli
OT: wouldn't that be a fun party trick?

Fun party trick? I think the military might be interested in hiring you :)

jrg
12:30 AM
Yeah, that was something paultag mentioned (the loco stuff)

picking up steam, lets go Membership board team \o/

@Oli people have to sign testimonials on the wiki

Where are we in the process? I just joined the channel.

as in link to their LP profile, I think
@GeorgeEdison slowly getting through them

Marco up yet... I didn't miss it?

Oli
12:31 AM
@ajmitch That's what I've been doing but what stops you signing it with somebody else's?

Y U NO TYPE OUT YOUR INTRO BEFORE HAND?!

jrg
@GeorgeEdison You didn't miss him.

@Oli you need to log in as them :) they can just check out the changelog

jrg
@MarcoCeppi Sorry. :P

@GeorgeEdison marco's dead last

12:31 AM
haha, you kind of got the shaft being first

@jrg you're an ubuntu member now - you have to be nice & hug people ;)

jrg
@ajmitch NEVER. Well, I can be nice.
Just no hugs. :D

you're no dholbach

Oli
We could speed things up with a few "This user hacked into my project and replaced every instance of the with kitten, setting us back by about five years!" just to bomb the people ahead of Marco :)
2

jrg
@Oli lol.

Crap, this train is arriving at 8:45

Oli
Get the next one. Or derail it. The first is probably easier.

jrg
@ajmitch Nice.

@MarcoCeppi you're going to get disconnected in a few minutes?

I'm on phone 3G
and I have IRC Cloud, so it'll keep me connected even if I'm not

12:35 AM
nothing to worry about then :)

just need to park in a bench at the station without too much delay

If your get disconnected, we can do the talking ;-)
you just have to do a reverse captcha at some point :P

Though, I don't think I'm going to get a chance to speak. It's been very exciting process though

exciting?

Yes!

Oli
12:38 AM
Could you not just ask them to bump you up? I'm sure they'd be fairly understanding

they'd be more likely to defer rather than making others wait until next month

No, that's not fair since not everyone may get a chance

Oli
Oh right, it's a time limited event?

Yeah, unfortunately (for me) :P

@Oli board members are volunteers as well :)

Oli
12:39 AM
@ajmitch Sure

Many years ago in the distant past I was on an ubuntu board

Oli
Does anybody vote negatively in these things?

@Oli yes I've seen that a few times

jrg
@Oli I haven't seen anyone

yes, though it's more common for people to vote +0 & suggest that they come back in a few months

jrg
12:41 AM
I've seen a few abstains, but no downvotes.

Oli
@StefanoPalazzo What sort of thing have they voted against? (what reasons, I mean)

sometimes people apply though they've only been active for a few weeks or a couple of months

Oli
@ajmitch Yeah that makes sense.

Looks like two are missing
I might be able to make it in!
Oops, miscounted

@Oli In the instances I've seen, people haven't been active for long enough, or their contribution hasn't been sustained.

Oli
12:43 AM
I think I'll get started on my wiki page.

I've also seen some weird ones where I couldn't tell what the reason was

@Oli Lol... me too :P

Oli
Although I can all but guarantee that damned Geoff Daglas will come along and edit the kittens out

walking with mny netbook open

I should probably update my wiki page, I haven't touched it for about 5 years

jrg
12:44 AM
@MarcoCeppi Dangerous.

Oli
@ajmitch Yeah I'd hurry up before Jorge comes along and deletes it.

I lie, nearly 4 years since I last touched it :)

De-trained

@Oli as long as he doesn't remove me from the developers group on LP as well :)

3 ppl 15 mins, going to be close </live-chatting-of-event>

Oli
12:47 AM
Is there a template for membership jibjabs?

Can the rest of us say good things about Marco when (if) his turn comes up?

I just copy-pasted from another member

Is that acceptable?

@GeorgeEdison Yes

jrg
12:48 AM
I actually stole paultag's formatting. :P

@GeorgeEdison I'm sure that you can

Good :P

jrg
@GeorgeEdison I intend to even if it wasn't "acceptable". It's encouraged.

I just like to be different

Oli
It's all under CC-SA-3.0

jrg
12:54 AM
Little brother heard me say something about my wiki page. His comment? "WHOA. You're on Wikipedia?!" rofl.

now I have to go & create a fan page for @jrg on wikipedia...

jrg
@ajmitch Oh please no.
that'll make him insufferable. :)

make him insufferable, or make you? :)

@jrg Maybe some day in the future :)

@MarcoCeppi it may be hard for the meeting to continue with some board members missing :(

1:00 AM
Looks like they're going to keep on going

I thought that 4 wouldn't be enough, I guess I may be wrong

Oli
How many people until you, Marco?

I'm next
Except, come on dude introduce yourself

Oli
Right, I'll be back after a cig

he's probably typing still

1:02 AM
frail
an hour to prepare
:P
heh, no intro needed

jrg
@MarcoCeppi You'll get it.

Okay, up next

jrg
hit the wrong button
They wanted to get through everyone.
wow, dead silence.

they're stunned

They're speechless.

jrg
1:07 AM
:D
@MarcoCeppi welcome aboard.

Oli
w00t

Congrats, @MarcoCeppi!
3

Hey you made that look too easy :D
nicely done

jrg
Congrats @MarcoCeppi!!!!

Thanks guys! Congrats to you too @jrg

Oli
1:11 AM
But seriously. Visa. Mastercard. Paypal. Or Ben&Jerry's at a push.

@MarcoCeppi now where's my payment?

What... I missed @jrg???
Nooooooooo!

@GeorgeEdison He was first :)

jrg
@GeorgeEdison Yeah, you really missed me. :D

Aw man :(

jrg
1:12 AM
@MarcoCeppi Thanks!

@jrg: Well, congrats!

jrg
@Oli I'll see what I can do. ;)

Okay, time to go home

now that you've got membership you can get back to the mod queue - there's more spam :(

see you marco o/

1:12 AM
drafts email to marcoceppi@ubuntu.com...

jrg
@GeorgeEdison wait ~48 hours, you'll get a bounce.

Is it based on IRC nick, or do you get to chose?

jrg
BTW, I'm framing that email saying nhandler added me to the ubuntumembers group. :)

@MarcoCeppi based on LP username

jrg
ninja'd

1:13 AM
marco-ceppi then, that'll be odd :D

@jrg I know :P Hence the draft.

jrg
@GeorgeEdison :P

@ajmitch Where is this spam?
I can't find it anywhere.

Cool, I can change my nick to update the alias

Oli
1:14 AM
I've nuked it. The less time it spends on the site - the better the chance that whoever is posting it will give up.

:(
And the fewer spam flags I can use...

@Oli thanks

Oli
Sorry :(

the amount of spam is annoying

I seem to have deleted them too, for good measure

1:16 AM
it's usually the same sort of patterns

I'm just kidding.

there's another one to kill

I'll ask the SE team to filter them. they're all very similar, it should be possible

often on the same questions, too

Oli
I really wish we could ban IPs.

jrg
You have to get the SE team to ban IPs.

Bounty offered: Skype not launching from menu but works from command line http://askubuntu.com/questions/65792/skype-not-launching-from-menu-but-works-from-command-line #skype

Oli
@jrg Indeed. They're slow though so we should have the power to do that.

jrg
@Oli They think you'll abuse it.

uhm
don't I remember that new users can't post links?
or was that just images?

Oli
1:18 AM
@jrg I've never abused a moderator power in my time here!

@StefanoPalazzo they have a limit on how many links, iirc

Yeah, the link quantity is limited.

you'd think the system would autoban an IP if they get over X amount of spam flags

or allow moderation based on keywords
put such posts into a mod queue until someone checks them
I just flagged another fake rolex watch post

1:26 AM
I sent a cry for help to team@se. let's see what happens

this only really started happening the last week or so
I wonder if we're becoming famous!

probably

Was it this user?
@JorgeCastro That's definitely true - we didn't see a lot of that up until this point.

@GeorgeEdison they use a different (unregistered) account for each post

@GeorgeEdison deleted now, but probably

1:28 AM
I always destroy the accounts too when I delete the posts

there are commonalities in the usernames, susan is one that's been used a few times
they're always a single lowercase word with 1 rep, easy to spot on the frontpage

yeah, by humans :(

right
all we can do for now

You are doing a fantastic job anyway. The amount of time spam survives on the site is pretty awesome even by our own standards

Hah! Got one:
scores another flag!!!

1:33 AM
well done

Ooops. I think in the hurry I flagged it as a non-answer instead of spam.

at least it gives us things to edit

Oh well - it's gone now.

@JorgeCastro I should be editing all these spam posts to get badges, right? ;)

I don't even bother, I just flag em
iirc flagging as spam notifies all mods on all SEs

1:35 AM
I've just been flagging as spam

@JorgeCastro that's just for the chat

oh, :-/

For those who want a real thrill: api.askubuntu.com/1.1/answers
Just refresh that - it's the latest up-to-the-minute / bleeding-edge of answers posted.

I need to write a spam flagger app then :)

Heh... with... drumroll...

1:38 AM
↑ ?body=true should work I think

Q: Stack.PHP - Completely Rewritten from the Ground Up [0.4 beta 2 Released!]

George Edison Don't know where to start? Stack.PHP is a PHP library for accessing and retrieving information from the Stack Exchange API. Head over here for a quick tutorial on setting up and using Stack.PHP. About Why you should use Stack.PHP: Stack.PHP has been completely rewritten from...

no please no make the bad man go away
I deal with PHP enough at work, I don't want to touch it for other projects as well :P

But this actually makes PHP fun again:
API::Site('askubuntu')->Answers()->Exec();
There you go - all the answers on the site. Just like that.

still doesn't make PHP fun

they always spam that desktop mockup question

1:42 AM
protect the question?

I doubt it'd help at all

good idea!

@Oli: -----^

since they'd just go on & spam a different question

1:43 AM
done

I want to get a question to 10k views :)

@ajmitch yeah but when they spam at least it bumps a question and I can edit it
if they stay on the same one there's no side benefit

Oli
@GeorgeEdison What are you pointing me at?
I see

We need a question protected.

1:47 AM
I still doubt it'll help much

I protected it
I think its a 15k or 20k level thing

Q: Is there an Ubuntu One files iPad client

xjstever81I saw the post about there being Ubuntu One Files for the iPhone in the works, is there one for the iPad as well? This would be very helpful for my work. Thanks

Note to self: threading is hard.

2:12 AM
It'd be really nice if it were beer o'clock right now
heh
15:15 * ajmitch tends to be allergic to cpanel
15:15 < cortesi> as a penetration tester, i like cpanel very much indeed.

Oli
Well I've just written a rather horrible data.stackexchange.com script. Feed it your user ID on the site and it'll tell you how many answers you've had, how many unique users owned those questions, how many of those answers were accepted, and of those, again how many unique users.
Essentially: How many people have you helped on Ask Ubuntu.

whoa, that is awesome!

slightly outdated info?
it says I've had 46 answers

Oli
They're answers that weren't on your own questions.

the last data dump was 3 october
woo, 169 for me!

Oli
2:27 AM
Or are they? Can't remember
Yeah, it blocks out self-answers.

I've only self-answered one
& I have 59 total answers now

Oli
Hmm
If Jorge is right about the date of the dump, that excludes 11 of your latest answers

I'm sure I haven't answered that many this month :)

Oli
If you've only answered one of your own, there's still 2 missing answers

doesn't really matter I guess
probably better to care about deleting more spam :)

Oli
2:34 AM
@ajmitch I hear you. All deleted.

thanks :)

@JorgeCastro Er, what?
I thought the last data dump was September?

october 4th
I was off by a day

Ooooooh - on the Data.SE site.
They use monthly dumps and give the rest of us quarterly dumps :P

3:27 AM
hmmm
@GeorgeEdison is the AU lens flaky for you?
every once in a while it just stops working

@JorgeCastro The lens itself? I don't know.
I actually don't have it installed ATM.

Oh dear

The data server is running though.

After all that work that was put in... :)

Don't panic. I've still been diligently working on the server.
Within a few short days, users will be running a local copy on their machines.
It's just taking a tad longer than I expected due to some "threading" issues :P
(Threads can be evil if used improperly.)

3:30 AM
2 separate spam answers on the same question

Thanks! [Increases flag weight further...]
(Yes, flag weight is one of my obsessions until I reach 750.)

you're as bad as the rest of us, trolling after badges
it's going to take a long time to reach 750

Oli
3:59 AM
Well I've started: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Oli
Whoever gives the best testimonial doesn't get banned >:)

4:10 AM
@Oli such incentives...

Bounty offered: Pulse doesn't recognize laptop microphone http://askubuntu.com/questions/67451/pulse-doesnt-recognize-laptop-microphone #pulseaudio

4:30 AM
I hear they are selling flag weight like crazy this days.
I like the wiki from Oli. It true shows the work that many slav... people do in Ubuntu.

slaving away, the only thanks we get is a promise of not being banned... :)

My testimonial - "Oli has slapped me silly many times over in my time here at Askubuntu. I am truly hurt and need of medical assistance."

"The mental scars that I have from my time on Ask Ubuntu, will be with me for years thanks to Oli"

"Ask not what you can do for Askbuntu. Ask what you can do for Oli"
2
"I came to Oli for help on solving problems in Ubuntu. I am happily back in Windows."

Oli
@ajmitch And even then, that promise is conditional on writing the best testimonial.

4:37 AM
@Oli I'll be sure to turn up to the meeting & bring these transcripts :)

"I have always voted in favor of Oli. It is better to be banned than to be banged!"

hah

goes and flags all of Oli's posts as "not constructive"...

Oli
* polishes the banhammer

Time to upload a special update to ubuntu, just for @Oli

4:40 AM
is it "oily" ^^

Noone will notice if I slip in a libc6 update, will they?
2

"The PC Spy"... AHA!!! I knew it all along - a Mac fanboy at heart...
Gasp!
@brunopereira81: If you think this is funny, read this: chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/201/conversation/…
