@Greg It's a file that something uses to store what process ID it's running under (so utility scripts can locate it to kill it, usually)

All of those commands will require admin-rights. Easiest is to do sudo su to get a root console. Archives like your core .tar.gz are combined in one file (packed) and reduced in size (compressed). gzip -d ubuntu-core-11.10-core-i386.tar.gz will uncompress the core to ubuntu-core-11.10-core-i3...

To create a new user: adduser <username> admin To modify a existing user: sudo usermod -aG admin <username> -a stands for append whereas -G stands for groups

By default Ubuntu has 7 tty's. 1-6 are command line only, 7 runs your X session (your normal desktop). To access them, use this keyboard shortcut: Ctrl + Alt + F1 (changing F1 to F1-F6 to access the terminal that you need) To get back to your X session (the normal desktop), Ctrl + Alt + F7

You can do this easily by a tool called Aptoncd . You can select the packages you want and best of all you can put it in a portable apt repo,requiring no internet
