4:00 PM
Meh, half the people I talk to that start using Ubuntu want it to look, feel, and bark like Windows
No no, I'm not against Ubuntu
Just that mentality

jrg
Agreed, I don't like that.

GUI everything and I don't want to ever touch terminal

@BrandonWeaver Want to work like Windows, and working like Windows are different.

is lost

4:01 PM
I just feel like asking why the heck they're on Linux if they want it to be more like Windows

jrg
@BrandonWeaver Joe Schmoe off the street doesn't want to learn a terminal.
2

@AmithKK lame old

jrg
They want to use a GUI.

Granted

@RolandTaylor This is ubuntu, you dont ask help help asks you

jrg
4:01 PM
Because Users want something shiny.

Wish as they may, we're more likely to replace Unity with a taskbar as likely as turning closed-source.
2

@jrg True

Then again to be fair I come from OpenBSD background

my friends never touch the magic black window

I didn't have anything but terminal for a few months (by choice so I'd have to learn things)

jrg
4:02 PM
@BrandonWeaver Lots of people are using Ubuntu because it's a way to get rid of Windows.

technically KSH, but that's splitting hairs
granted

Linux Desktops are not about the terminal.
Leave that for the dungeon dweller generation, which is quickly passing away.

@BrandonWeaver You should use Slackware

Linux Servers are

jrg
Linux!=Ubuntu

4:03 PM
@RolandTaylor That's subjective

jrg
@BrandonWeaver The success of iOS, Android and other GUI's would argue otherwise.

Linux Desktop!=Terminal

jrg
But, I agree. It is subjective.

Of course it's not the point, but the amount of power there

MoreBoldPlease

4:04 PM
@MarcoCeppi Centos Q: can i get apt on centos?

jrg
@AmithKK no.

@AmithKK No, CentOS is RHEL, which uses Yum.
You can install Aptitude, it's not recommended.

11.1 has this play swarming though
place *

When I first started using Linux (on the Desktop) I was surprised to learn that it was not about learning how to use a terminal. I learned how to do that probably a year after.

me no like yum

jrg
4:05 PM
@MarcoCeppi MoreBoldCamelCaseIsAwesome

yum is yummy! Not.
2

About the same, but to be fair I'm trying to be a sysadmin

What's wrong with yum? I love yum whatprovides <name>

@AmithKK Why not? Don't like tasty software?

YOU NEEDZ BOLD?

4:06 PM
pkg_add?

@RolandTaylor nah

@BrandonWeaver As a system administrator I've migrated the majority of our server base from CentOS to Ubuntu servers.

@BrandonWeaver that's cool, but you should know that part of being a sysadmin is being flexible enough to realize that the GUI is okay :)

Ubuntu is faster with a Terminal :)

Oh I know, just in my case I love to tweak with things

4:06 PM
Which is more stable: Ubuntu or CentOS

Okay, really. Please no more bold.

jrg
@AmithKK Subjective argumentative question.

If we're talking about 11.10......

@AmithKK Both, they're Linux.

jrg
@MarcoCeppi Ok, I'm done. :P

4:07 PM
no yes

@BrandonWeaver Most users are not sysadmins or trying to be sysadmins,the percentage is small, most ppl are just regular users who want to access the web, watch videos, write a document, etc., and GUI makes life easier for them to accomplish those tasks..

jrg
@AmithKK let us go to the sandbox.

Granted as well, but then again encouraging the mentality that everything needs to be abstracted as much as possible incites some pretty nasty issues

Think of it this way @BrandonWeaver You're going to be spending 90% of your time fixing and monitoring servers. Do you really want to spend more of your time fooling with your desktop, fixing, tweaking, modifying?

@BrandonWeaver I didn't feel like that , i feel like "relieved" , to bring something back from the dead
I wasted my time on windows many years
2

4:09 PM
It's why I moved from Debian to Ubuntu for desktop OS

Ha, to be fair I'm also a Vim guy

jrg
YAY VIM.

@BrandonWeaver Look, we maybe adding GUI stuff, but we're not removing the command line utility.
2

Forced myself to go pure command line for a month, coding speed went up exponentially

When someone needs it, they can access it.

4:10 PM
I'm not debating that, just stating that learning some of the cli would do wonders for most people

It's just giving the desktop users more options.

Lord help the poor newbie who tries to run a CLI only OpenBSD box

sigh... This is why I'm passionately against the "IRC Only/dungeon dwelling/let's keep the regular folks out" mentality.

Yes, it's up to the people, if they're satisfied with the GUI, we're in no position to tell them to use CLI because it's faster.

@MarcoCeppi bold is the new thing!

4:11 PM
Just saying there should be a healthy balance

@Alvar Its getting annoying Alvar

@BrandonWeaver Where isn't there a healthy balance?

no

@RolandTaylor what's your opinion? it says 2 days and 17 hours remaining , cancel?

@BrandonWeaver What's unbalancing it?

4:12 PM
Ctrl+Alt+T and I'm in the termainal

In most cases people install and go

@Explorer Download or installation?

never touch terminal, it's like some type of evil plague

no

@BrandonWeaver Same goes for GUI utilities too.

4:12 PM
@Oxwivi getting new packages , 3d step

dont swear

that's the mentality I see around a lot

OK!

yawn - not a lot to flag today

@htorque sad

4:13 PM
@Explorer Think it's safe to cancel.
As long as it has not started installing anything.

@Explorer I would say to leave it a bit and see if it goes back to a normal download speed. That happens from time to time.

And installation wouldn't take that much time anyway.

Considering half the questions are answered by upgrade your graphics card

@BrandonWeaver Just because some people are more comfortable with GUI doesn't mean they think terminal is evil, they just think I'd rather point-and-click, rather than sit and learn how to type the commands on the terminal correctly.

I'm only really referring to that "some people" group
Who only use Linux because they hate Windows

4:15 PM
@BrandonWeaver why should (for example) my father have to learn the terminal when he's been comfortable just doing what he needs/wants to do without it for so many years?
I don't really see the point.

Just because something's comfortable mean that it's right
doesn't mean *

@BrandonWeaver Its freedom, they choose to use the GUI and not learn the terminal. Ultimately, nobody is being forced to learn anything. and no one learns anything when forced

Jeez, typos like crazy today

So... using the GUI is wrong?
Since when? 1972?
I mean come on, let's not make computing a religion now.

1971

4:18 PM
@BrandonWeaver So you sitting in a chair now? A bit comfortable maybe? that's not right!!!!
4

@RolandTaylor Terminal computing, you mean.

holy crap tons of users o.O

@TheEvilOne Welcome back

@TheEvilOne XD

@nitstorm ROFL

4:19 PM
@TheEvilOne thanks to Marco Ceppi

I just find that the quote from Theo rings true: Linux people do what they do because they hate Microsoft. We do what we do because we love Unix.

jumping jellyfish! @TheEvilOne!

@Explorer :P

Regardless, for some tasks such as going through an SQL database, I don't want to wait for a GUI client to load
when CLI can access it far faster and get things done

you know what i found interesting on freenode today... someone with the nick "jcastro" is giving an ubuntu classroom session. the only "J. Castro" I'm aware of is @JorgeCastro here. Are they one and the same?

4:20 PM
...

(you can tell i have been spending too much time on freenode :P)

I'd rather use a GUI client for SQL because it makes my life easier...

There are instances where CLI is far faster and more efficient.

@BrandonWeaver You don't want to, but there others who doesn't want to type. There are choices, users choose.
3

bbl

4:20 PM
Never said it was any more than my Opinion

@Oxwivi +1
although just an FYI... for MySQL stuff, most of the GUIs still require SOME typing
:P

@BrandonWeaver Dude, cli works for you, good for you. It doesn't fly with other people. Live with it. This is linux, land of freedom. Nobody said you can't use linux without learning the terminal!

true :)

@TheEvilOne long time

I'm yet to find one that doesn't :P

4:22 PM
@Alvar I know, righit?

@BrandonWeaver So what if it's more fast and efficient? Ferraris are faster than regular cars, doesn't mean everyone would want to use those.

@TheEvilOne yeah:P

being dragged into the abyss of Windows clustered servers is evil o.o

And for the record, I use GUI+Terminal daily.

@nitstorm wow, you should come here more often

4:22 PM
that's where I was

@TheEvilOne haha windows

+1 @Oxwivi

I have to use windows for avr studio 4 :/

@Explorer lol :P will :)

@nitstorm btw have you met Explorer before?

4:23 PM
@Alvar at least you didnt have to manage server clusters shivers

Actually I've been standing for the past 15 minutes, but I digress.

@TheEvilOne true

I also enjoy sleeping on a wooden slab. More efficient

Bounty offered: Considerations when restoring backup from 1 machine to another http://askubuntu.com/questions/64931/considerations-when-restoring-backup-from-1-machine-to-another #installation

@RolandTaylor Ah, nope ... Hello @Explorer : Nice to meet ya :)

4:23 PM
haha I made a html file that makes ie crash! :D

...you mean standards compliant html?

@nitstorm hi :)

@BrandonWeaver Great for you, I prefer mattresses. :)

Then again now I'm just being facetious.

lol I reached my vote allowance and can't star that one...

4:25 PM
bbl

@BrandonWeaver I'm guessing you also avoid inefficient clothing, food, and friends, correct?

@RolandTaylor which one? @Oxwivi's ? let me star is for you

@RolandTaylor I didn't know there were vote allowances on the chat

@Explorer Hahi?

Of course
Human interaction in real life is inefficient

4:26 PM
Remote dloading ubuntu 20hrs remaining :O

food tubes are way better

@AmithKK I feel your pain brother!

@AmithKK how many times are you going to say "bbl" and then resurface

bbl!=brb?

be back left vs. be right back .. just some directions

4:28 PM
@MarcoCeppi aw crap, so when I see blatant "Not an Answer"s I have to actually COMMENT the thing to explain why its not an answer during flagging?

@BrandonWeaver So what are you doing here? Although it's a virtual meeting, it's real people no offense btw, just part of the debate

@Explorer ... Be back later, you mean...

(i know what bbl is)

@TheEvilOne Not why, just that it's not an answer.

@Oxwivi rightright

4:29 PM
Use the Pro Tempore comments thing

required human interaction 30-45 minutes a day

Makes life a lot easier

speaking of which, my allocated time has been spend

@MarcoCeppi considering i've been stuck in the world of Windows for an extended period of time, it seems i have to catch up with the flagging tools :/

@Explorer yes

4:30 PM
Cheers.

>_<?
the hell?

jrg
Cya @BrandonWeaver.

I am seriously wondering if @BrandonWeaver is Sheldon :P //Sheldon from "The Big Bang Theory" for those wondering which Sheldon :P
@BrandonWeaver cya later

I'm wondering if he is human.

LOL :P

jrg
4:34 PM
TANGENT.
Isn't there an option to scale an image in gimp/pinta?

Yes, there is

jrg
off the top of your head, do you remember what it's called?

@MarcoCeppi back to the nagstorm :P I flagged something on this one: askubuntu.com/questions/70281/…

jrg
@TheEvilOne Same. Thus making all our flag weights go up.

4:36 PM
@jrg resize image

one thing though
they've got a strange issue

jrg
@RolandTaylor in pinta?

you know i think their title is misleading...

jrg
Agreed.

@jrg afair

4:38 PM
i think it should be renamed to "NTFS Resizing Problem" or similar
but i'm waiting on a response to my comment.

jrg
Thanks, that was correct.
btw, is gajim still having problems?

gajim - a little, but not really

jrg
Thanks for the spelling correction.

The nightly builds are beginning to stabilize (I think a new release is imminent).

jrg
Coolness.

4:42 PM
BTW the option for resizing images in pinta is in image>resize image.
I need to write that down (for the documentation I'm supposed to be doing :P)

jrg
Yeah, found it. Your comment put me on the right track though.

cool
@GeorgeEdison hi!

Hello.

jrg
@GeorgeEdison I'm about to test that stack exchange iPhone app.
We'll see if he really has read/write or not.

Just got my second yearling badge on Stack Overflow.
It's hard to believe that I found the site two whole years ago.

5:02 PM
@GeorgeEdison hi
you can help me?
I have written a very simple program with a few while loops and conditions in Python, and tested it into IDLE.
It sems to run correctly, and the values printed for test at each
important lines of the program are Ok

@GeorgeEdison Congratulations! XD

do we have a general "how to install and use dconf" question?

when I run the program in blender text window, no errors are detected and when, launching the animation with Alt-A, nothing happens
when I give a look at the console window, the program seems not to be executed correctly, and a variable value which is set to 0 in the head of my code has been changed a few lines after the program began to run, into 50, without noticeable reason ! its value should have been gently incremented by a=a+1 ! no other operation uses this variable !
(don't interrupt me please !)

@JorgeCastro not AFAIK
@GeorgeEdison busy?

@JorgeCastro Don't think so

jrg
5:14 PM
@JorgeCastro Nope.
This has got to be a duplicate...
-1
Q: What system hardware are you certain works perfectly with Ubuntu desktop?

ghbarrattHave you found great success with a particular set of hardware? If so, what were the specs? I have been using flavors of Linux for many years. I have installed it on countless computers with countless hardware configurations. I love using Ubuntu desktop, which I do, on average, for about 5 hours...

@jrg Rather than duplicate it's subjective and argumentative, methinks.

@jrg Oh man, I just flagged it as off-topic accidentally instead of exact-duplicate of askubuntu.com/questions/131/…
Okay guys, I flagged a question with the wrong flag, should I re-flag it or just add a comment? which is better?

Sorry, I'm back.
(At least for the moment.)
@Explorer: What's this Python problem?

@GeorgeEdison ^ there , please

Q: Which computers are guaranteed to work?

David SiegelBefore I buy my next laptop, I'd like to make sure that it will work perfectly with Ubuntu. Is there a list of completely supported computers anywhere?

5:24 PM
Geroge you help Explore, I love you long time :D
(sorry I just felt like using that line for no reason)

@MarcoCeppi: I flagged it as off-topic accidentally, instead of exact dupe. I mean the other question. What should I do? Re-flag or comment?

@nitstorm nbd
@nitstorm It's not so much that it was flagged wrong, but that it was flagged.
We can figure out pretty quickly that it's a duplicate

@MarcoCeppi Ah... so i'll just add a dupe link in the comments?

Yeah, it's preferred that you put the dup link in the comments anyways
We're a lot more lieniant here, but just because it's a dupe doesn't mean you have to flag it
There are enough members in the community with the ability to close that moderators don't have to step in as often
So by leaving a public comment other users can start to vote, and the author knows sooner rather than later

@MarcoCeppi Roger that :)

5:28 PM
There are only 3 of us moderators, but there are over 70 users with the ability to vote to close :D
So for now a hybrid of comment + flag with link to duplicate will help cover all the bases. Eventually you won't really need to flag that much at all :D

@Explorer: Can I see the code?

Cool, thanks @MarcoCeppi

@GeorgeEdison If you'd agree to the NDA, sure. :P

Plus we'll have to blindfold you

Lol :P
@MarcoCeppi: Take it back...!

jrg
5:35 PM
PSA: I'm about to post something that could be categorized as spam - I'm testing a SE API hack for a buddy, so don't delete until I've given the all clear. :P

@GeorgeEdison Amazing!
@jrg narrows eyes
Try just posting to meta instead, if you can.

jrg
@MarcoCeppi Ok, I'll do that instead.
hehe, imgur uploading broke for his app too. XD
@GeorgeEdison Sent from that mobile app. - meta.askubuntu.com/questions/1918/testing-api-hack-thingy
Wow, didn't expect it to work that easily.
@GeorgeEdison all it is is a glorified UIWebView.

It... worked?!?!

jrg
Yeah.
Deleted the post (since it wasn't needed anymore).
@MarcoCeppi OK, all clear. I'll go bother Stack Apps or Ask Different with my API shenanigans.
:P
However, that app does one thing - it asks questions. It's not a full-fledged SE client.
Still impressive though.

I'll say.
Next week we're due for the beta of v2.0 of the API.

jrg
5:51 PM
Weren't we due for that like 3 months ago...? :P

Hello everybody :)

@Takkat Hi.

ok so someone keeps just flagging questions as "low quality"
instead of just downvoting
if you're out there, I will choose invalid every time. :)

jrg
Who left a comment on my nuked meta.au post? :)
@JorgeCastro Make that a PSA on the header of the site. ;D

@jrg Me.

jrg
5:56 PM
@GeorgeEdison ah, ok.
I can't see it anymore, it says I deleted it. (which is correct)

It was nothing.

jrg
Ok, I flipped a coin and george gets the bounty, bruno gets the accepted answer for my deja dup question. :P
