it isn't a task like plowing a field, where more hours spent doing it translates into some concrete amount of accomplishment, either. a lot of people (even famous ones) will say that you need to make allowance for "downtime" and that you might even get more productive thoughts during or as a result of downtime, than during or as a result of being "on the clock"

this is funny: I went to my probability professor's office to ask some questions and he was doing a weekly meeting with his student. One of his advice to his student was "don't take my class. it's a waste of time. Just google it if you forgot some concepts".

@Shaun topology is very interesting, fun, and when you combine it with other fields, you get new theorems rather quickly.
Aug 20, 2024 23:12
@jasmine because if you define $(a+\mathfrak{m})\cdot (b+\mathfrak{m}^3) := ab+\mathfrak{m}^3$ then this might not be well-defined since if $a'\in\mathfrak{m}, b'\in \mathfrak{m}^3$ then by the same definition $(a+a'+\mathfrak{m})(b+b'+\mathfrak{m}^3) = ab+a'b+\mathfrak{m}^3$ where the term $a'b$ isn't necessarily in $\mathfrak{m}^3$

@Shaun I know PhD students who had “nothing” until their final year. I imagine your situation is not uncommon. But best wishes.

so, of the infinite bag of positive integers for which x_n is in [0,M], you choose one, n_1. then you look at the sets of positive integers n larger than n_1 for which x_n is in [0, M/2] or for which x_n is in [M/2, M], respectively. one of those two bags will also be infinite. your selections from those infinite bags are indices n_1, n_2, .. that you use to form the subsequence, not the values x_{n_1}, x_{n_2}, etc. of the sequence itself
Oct 21, 2024 20:21
sku there's something a little weird about the way that argument is phrased. "one of them will have infinite points" - here "infinite" refers to the set of positive integers n for which x_n is in the given half of the interval, not to the set of real numbers x_n that lie in that interval (which might always be only finite, as it is in your example)
