@AndyP but but but surely I need a lifted Ford F-350 with a dual rear axle to get groceries in downtown NYC!

Meanwhile - there are lots of artisanal traditions all around the world for making all kinds of craft with centuries of history which have been used as status symbols since forever. Showing off your wealth with a hand-painted japanese vase is much more ecological and doesn't take up space...

Woohoo!
Legs are starting to return.
3.8W/kg for 1hr today. Not a bad place to start the season from at all :)

I like how even though people are nostalgic towards rim brakes and friction shifters, nobody wants the bloody bottle dynamos and incandescent light bulbs back

@gschenk Don't know, I guess ディレイラー is the smoothest.
Apr 17, 2024 13:22
I understand when people have trouble with derailleur. But "braking" is not that hard.

Was up late (gaming) and heard a thief coming with their truck. I went outside and asked him to be so kind to refrain from taking bikes. I received a polite reply and we wished each other a good night.

I see, sure but jumps cause impacts on the BB. I've ridden through a lot of mud, dirt, snow, puddles on the gravelbike but the BB bearings appear almost as new after ~9000km. Would've expected a XT BB to last at least as long

I wish I had someone in the family who is willing to ride more than 40km

Conflate them and you get "spherical physicists at a railway platform"
Apr 7, 2024 19:04
Hard answer - "it depends"
So there are the cheaper clone folding bikes which are made of steel and are heavy. They are the lowest new price bracket.
Then you get makers like Dahon who are similar-but-better
And at the top is the Brompton, which is "sell a kidney" price but generally well reputed.

(and my dislike for clamped accessories also applies to SKS Speedrockers)

Remember that Jeep which could literally be remote-controlled via the internet, like an RC-car, because of terrible security? I'm looking forward to bikes doing the same

I guess gas is still too cheap

@Erlkoenig If dealing with vehicles with 750W motors with throttle, I'm sure the extra weight would be gladly chosen if it leads to less maintenance and more safety (the additional weight seems to be around 300g per caliper, if considering calipers for 50cc).

@MaplePanda No, not for that, but for asking product recommendations, yes :)

indeed. Garmin didn't manage to get a reputation for TERRIBLE software by accident, they worked hard at it

There's a million memes about how winter is better. I bet these all come from couch potatoes who never actually go outside.

afaik EN17406 is even required by road laws. There has been a recent EU ruling that standards used in laws have to be freely accessible. Hopefully this gets implemented soon.

Might be a good temporary fix, but brakes are certainly on the components I would rather be over cautious about

Colloquial and regional language are so interesting. My great-grandma used a word for a dish that I never heard anywhere else, except one single time in a restaurant... My family used an odd word where we weren't certain it actually existed - turns out it's mispronounced French 🤣

@Michael Memento: "What am I doing? Oh, I'm chasing this guy." (gunshot) "NOPE. He's chasing me!"

@Michael Maybe there is. I HATE the concept of needing a phone to configure gears though. I just quickly set it up once and then never touched the phone app again

One tip I got was, never report damages to an insurance yourself. Always go through an independent broker. Those people know how far to escalate to get out max. Since insurances know that as well, they have an incentive not to be obtuse.
Feb 20, 2024 16:30
The old adage applies: Insuring against anything that can't ruin you (i.e. small insurances for everyday objects, but not something like health insurance) isn't worth it - you always lose, because the insurance company always wins, because that's their business model
Feb 20, 2024 16:24
Incident, customer actually rode the bike and wore out parts...
Feb 20, 2024 15:35
How can a bicycle insurance be more expensive than a car insurance. Wtf.
Feb 19, 2024 12:25
@gschenk I have literally never had this or any other problem with Schrader valves. In fact, I find the valve core of Prestas sticking way out the top makes them more fragile and I think the reason I’m having such a problem with them is that they’re bent from taking a lever-action head on and off them.
Feb 19, 2024 10:52
@Michael that should be outlawed
Feb 19, 2024 00:20
And regarding that electric pump, if you're willing to perform some modifications, you could theoretically cut off the existing Schrader head and install a presta one instead. It's quite easy to attach them to the hose.
Feb 16, 2024 19:52
What kinds of dogs do you have? I only know the kind that specifically jumps in front of the bike

I think some measures should become habitual. Mask when sick, staying at home when sick, mask's at the doctor's during flue season, coughing etiquette.
