222 km I am so fucked
Feb 10 00:15
@Willeke ah it's like "pro: supple tyre, con: supple tyre". I think there's a good reason I usually don't read bike reviews. I don't know any other product where press fails so badly.

@gschenk I would not book ahead in most cases or just for the next one or two nights, so you do not lose much money if you cannot reach your accommodation.
Feb 5 22:15
@Rеnаud it's just so painful, hours upon hours in a confined cramped position. The longest car trip I was on was just Munich to Vernona with stops at Trento and Sirmione for two hours each. 1200 km sounds like a nightmare.

@Erlkoenig pills are cheaper and cause less CO2 emissions :p

@ArtGertner boiled linseed oil is used to protect wood. The half-litre bottle I have is from a UK manufacturer, did cost about 30 EUR here. I don't know if it's the same stuff people claim to use a spoke prep, but would not be surprised, since it's been a staple in every household in the early days of bicycles.

I'm contemplating replacing a perfectly good 105 crankset with GRX. Damn Shimano for being too stubborn to make sensible gearing easily achievable.

@Criggie That would explain the lack of a chain, though aren't spokes normally steel? Otherwise it looks like only the steel remains of an aluminium bike.

Speaking of reddit, Criggie got a new MTB: i.redd.it/zgscvveewjce1.jpeg

IMO things intended to improve ergonomics/comfort are a better justification for spending money than marginal gains

@Willeke Why would using a tube increase the longevity of a tubeless tire? I replace them when the treads are worn, or if there's a cut that could not be repaired (there are patches for tubeless tires), that's independent from the tube.

and then a Criggie comes along and breaks your seattube within weeks

@Sam7919 a critical mass, when 16 or more.

leasing is for businesses to convert capital expenses to operational expenses
Dec 16, 2024 22:37
I just ride the bike. Scratches are a combination of Patina and memories.
Dec 13, 2024 20:00
@Criggie Soma just released their Bar ins, which look really neat! I bought a couple but haven't tested them out yet
Dec 13, 2024 12:31
but models designed for that, not regular barends that you install between the grips and the shifters. sq-lab.com/fr/des-produits/innerbarends/… These still allow an access to the brakes and shifters (but only to downshift)
Dec 13, 2024 11:04
I mean, I've seen people hold the bars in the middle near the stem... but this was hands on the fork crown so face was barely above the bars.
Dec 5, 2024 18:51
the thing with helmets is that they are very easy to use protection which doesn’t get in the way
Jul 31, 2024 19:37
Well to be fair they are 32 spoke wheels, and we all know how extremely fragile those are

As a Canadian you do not need a Visa for an internship in Germany. You have to apply for a permit once you arrived in Germany though. The big advantage use that you can start without waiting for all formalities and you do not need a sponsor that has to pay in case you screw up.

If you shoot the magnet from a high powered rifle, you'd get roughly the right dynamic. But your field would be still three or four orders of magnitude to low. Even proximity, ie hitting the next neuron, wouldn't suffice.

@Sam7919 rounded workout? No, it merely deprives you of control
Nov 28, 2024 08:52
@Sam7919 Well there isn't actually that much solidarity. There's a lot of animosity between the different "disciplines". People like identifying with a group. Even though you can ride different styles... There is a lot of talk from fixie riders about being "superior" as they don't need gears/freewheels/brakes. So if you then ask whether a fixie is (objectively) better for training/whatever you'll surely get some snarky remarks

@PaulH mmm aero dropper post, for your road/gwabbel hybrid bike ! sounds like a product idea
Nov 23, 2024 17:31
@Sam7919 Don't most trinkets have elastic straps that fit around any shape?
Nov 23, 2024 16:30
The pandemic taught me (whenreplacement parts weren’t available) that destroying my bikes in crap weather wasn’t actually all that fun and riding in “survival mode” (rain, wind, and poor traction) wasn’t all that beneficial to my fitness.
Nov 22, 2024 18:20
Today I was actually grateful for headwind - on a slippery descent 😅
Nov 20, 2024 06:11
@Criggie you are too humble 😊😊
Nov 19, 2024 21:15
@Sam7919 What I'm saying is that track racers now and any cyclist before vertical drop outs had to align their rear wheel by hand and eye and everything was ok. If the world's most powerful cyclists (track racers) can align a wheel and have it stay in place, then the rest of us are probably ok too.
Jun 24, 2024 13:52
This is why I often advice second hand expensive rather than cheaper new.

I think a simple contract is still a good idea; if the bike is stolen from you, you can prove that it's yours (and not the previous owners')

now, two years later, after all Putin said to the contrary and Russia's conduct, you still belive that? If Putin was concerned about a NATO threat, why would he bother with abducting children or ethnic cleansing? In Kursk one can observe how concerned he is about Russia's safety.

Please consider it from this perspective: So maybe Putin is concerned about NATO and the European Union as they both protect Nations from Russian dominance. Remember, in Nov 2019 NATO was so toothless French president Macron called the alliance "brain dead".
Nov 8, 2024 23:10
@Sam7919 we cannot because of binding international treaties prohibiting proliferation and nuclear tests. You can be certain those treaties will not be abolished.
Nov 8, 2024 23:04
@Sam7919 France and UK don't have a 'nuclear umbrella'. They miss the necessary tactical elements of the nuclear triad required for deterrence. If you only have doomsday weapons, an opponent can escalate with smaller weapons because they know you are not mad enough to suicide over a small nuke at a remote place. UK and France rely on the US for that capability.

Running and cycling in a muddy field is the point of cyclocross indeed, not gravel. Gravel is about having a bike that is comfortable enough to go where cars don't, and preferably on long distances.

@Erlkoenig nothing is more vexing than this: I'm going fast, yet overtaking someone (safely). Later I have to slow down for pedestrians or because it's not safe to overtake. Who's not breaking, passing at a hairs breadth from a pram, whizzing past an elderly person, or getting right into oncoming cyclist's path? The ass I just passed. I mean, they don't need to be immensely clever to understand: noone breaks if it's not for a good reason.

In my experience, the majority of arguments in cycling are a mix of yesteryears marketing blurbs, sadistic traditions, and half understood physics.

That's not how this works... At those frequencies and due to the shape of the "antenna" (flat coil) energy isn't really radiated, irrespective of the transmission power. It's mostly "just" a strong, alternating magnetic field, but hardly any EM radiation. It's like a classic transformer with a slightly different shape. That's why the range is so limited.
Oct 29, 2024 06:51
But conductivity is also bad. The entire point of wireless charging is to induce a current at the receiver. And it can absolutely induce a current in stainless steel or titanium, which will in turn create a magnetic field and also emit heat. So theoretically a pacemaker could melt or rip itself apart

conclusion for yesterday’s ride: I can do 224km, but I can’t recommend it :D

I always just spread with the tip of the glue bottle, it usually works fine
Aug 13, 2024 02:09
@PaulH Yeah - but new analogue riders tend to be slow. New ebike riders tend to have much more momentum and make bad things worse.

Micro cars are rather popular in Amsterdam, partly because they have (almost) no parking restrictions. Fit two adults, are allowed to go 45 kmh, only a moped licence is needed and minimum age of 16.

@DavidW I think that's the point of Dutch cycling infrastructure. It puts safe spaces in a car-centric world. I don't just want such a space. I want the world.

The Dutch may be proud of their cycling infrastructure, but man, you belong in that ghetto.
