2:01 PM
why do i even need to know about news like this?
was there someone i know? am i able to do something about it? is there some significant way i can help?
if not, then i'm not going to waste mental space on it

Yeah.
I actually avoid news for just that reason.

me, too

Or reddit.
I'm too old for shit I can't do anything about.

55 is not too old.

i don't mean to make light of what happened... but there's no reason for me to care about this
the damn NPR news break is the only reason that i heard about it

2:03 PM
I know exactly what you mean.
And yet so many people will think they should care.
An army of politicians will demand stricter laws.
Ignoring the fact that what he did already was perfectly illegal.

laws against what?
@RegDwightАΑA i was about to say that
how much stricter do the laws against murder need to be?

Oh, and the 2nd Amendment. Can't have that discussion from scratch all over again. Either do something already or do nothing and shut up.
Instead it will be just talk talk talk.
So yeah. I guess I'll go download some sheet music instead.
Sure enough I checked Reddit. Sure enough the top item is a guy showing off his bloody wound.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I'm choosing to believe that this is a dramatic inflation of actual facts.
In another words, she shopped there sometime in the week before the shooting. Maybe.

@KitFox Not according to the newspaper

2:09 PM
Or maybe she was the target all along.

let's look at adorable animals and animated gifs. much more productive.

Holy crap.

> “Had I not gone outside, I would’ve been in the midst of gunfire,” Ghawi wrote on her blog just after the Eaton Centre shooting. “I wish I could shake this odd feeling. The feeling that may have potentially saved my life.”

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 looks skeptical about news sources

@JSBձոգչ I like how the second kangaroo was sneaking up on the old man.

OK, fine. Then she was a target.

I'm going to go with "she was incredibly unlucky".

The tide is high.

Boobs help.

2:14 PM
Déjà vu.

Oh yeah these boobs are fresh.
These are not.

i missed boobs?
oh well
i saw the turkey one

holding still

2:16 PM
that is nice

judges

@KitFox WTF

no, i already saw that one
this is why we wear bras in public

Speaking of skinless wieners, did you know that a court in Germany has ruled religious circumcision illegal?

@JSBձոգչ I don't

2:18 PM
Apparently they make nippled bras these days.

so the germans have made Judaism illegal? that's a shocker

@RegDwightАΑA more accurately, "infant" cicrumcision

@JSBձոգչ Judaism and Islam.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Oh, so you can choose it later?

@RegDwightАΑA inclusivity!

2:19 PM
@KitFox yes

@JSBձոգչ tell that to the moslems.

Well, infants are really good about making their own decisions.

but the ruling was, in essence, removing a portion of your child's body for non-medically-necessary reasons is abuse, until they are old enough to consent to it.

Really we should just trust the parents.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 yes, assault and battery.

2:20 PM
Next we'll outlaw children at McDonald's.

If you're 18 you can cut your wiener off wholesale.

@RegDwightАΑA you can cut it off OVER 9000

Depends on the wiener, really.

Well, anyway. I thought it was a humorous ad.

2:22 PM
Speaking of "humorous," my FiL sent me a birthday card which he described as "humerous."

@RegDwightАΑA What do you want to tell me?

@Gigili inclusivity.

It would be funnier if they didn't give away the punchline in the title.

@RegDwightАΑA Yes, I'm not blind. And? What about trying to make sense?

There, fixed it.

2:25 PM
@Gigili well that was all I wanted to tell you. There's nothing more.

Good for you.
When someone's status is "busy", I have a feeling that I should talk to them.
And I'm not going to see a doctor.

Well, OK then.

TCP/IP.
Sorry, not for you guys.

It's OK, I've got one already.

What? TCP/IP isn't for us? But how will we breathe!?!?!?

2:37 PM
Don't panic, @MrShiny.
hands @MrShiny a paper bag
Send your transmissions through there for a bit until your kbps goes down.
Otherwise you're going to start dropping packets all over the place.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Androidlost.
By the way, how do you guys feel about attachable power packs + solar chargers for smartphones?

@Cerberus Never tried one. I guess in theory they could be useful. Be careful about the power output, some phones require more power

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Well, they charge your battery, so they don't need to match your power usage.

Meh. Inconsistent power generation can mess up your battery.

I am looking at one that holds 1900 mAh, the same as my phone's battery.

2:42 PM
@Cerberus No, they need to output enough power to activate the charging

€ 20.

My husband uses his car charger all the time, and I am pretty certain his battery is crap because of it.

You think so?

I have a USB-power converter but it doesn't charge my phone because it only puts out .5A and the phone needs .7A

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Okay, so how much is that?

2:42 PM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 That.

Hmm.

@Cerberus Depends. When in doubt, try to match the specs your phone has

I believe I saw a review where this one was charging a Galaxy SII. And there's also an Iphone model.

Yeah. It's probably OK in an emergency.
And that AndriodLost app gives me the creeps.

You probably have an A/C->USB adapter, right? check its amps. probably at least 700mA

2:44 PM
I think the charger that came with my phone is 1A.

My project lead is all hot and bothered to install that kind of software on our laptops.

@Cerberus really?!

So we can wipe the hard drive if they get stolen.

I installed AndroidLost on all the work android phones

2:44 PM
@KitFox Yeah exactly, I wouldn't normally charge from it.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Is that weird?

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 So you can peep on your employees?

@Cerberus seems like a lot

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Oh, so you know it! Well, then don't upgrade to Jelly Bean yet.

@KitFox No, so that we can locate the phones, because we all work remotely, and if someone needs to know where the Galaxy S is, they can go to that site and check the gps

> Output: 5.0V 1.0A

2:45 PM
@Cerberus I didn't install it on my main phone

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Still makes me feel creeped out.

You don't need to install it before your phone is lost. Just trigger the install through the web market after your phone is lost and then send yourself an SMS to trigger it.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Okay why not?

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 What if I'm in the tub?

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 If your SIM is still in it...
Or can AL also be activated by web access alone?

2:47 PM
@Cerberus If someone takes my sim out but doesn't also wipe the phone, then maybe I have a problem.

@KitFox I wouldn't want someone else to install AL on my phone/computer, creepy indeed!
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I actually wonder how well known these progams are among thieves.

@KitFox Well, these phones are not meant for you to be using as a personal phone. They are test phones. They don't have SIMs. And everyone knows that AndroidLost is installed.

I remember I tried a program like that on my Windows Mobile long ago.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 But what if I am in the tub with the test phone!

@Cerberus I'm sure they know that these programs exist, even if they don't know about a particular one.

2:49 PM
Yay!!
Naked pictures!

@KitFox That's your problem, I guess.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Yeah, so wouldn't they simply hard reset the phone immediately?
Unless it's cooked into the ROM or the kernel or something...

I agree that I wouldn't want my company to install AndroidLost on my main cellphone even if they paid for the phone and it was their property.

It's not theft prevention anyway. It's for finding it if you lost it.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Agreed.
@KitFox How do you mean?
They have testimonials on their website.

2:51 PM
@Cerberus yeah, that's the thing. if I stole an Android phone, I'd probably poke around to see what info is in the phone, and if there isn't anything useful in there I'd probably remove the SIM and reset the phone.

@Cerberus I mean, I wouldn't expect to recover my stolen phone using that app. But I might use it to find the one I'd lost.
@Cerberus Testimonials!? Well, then I must be completely wrong.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Exactly...so it might be a good idea to get a ROM or something that has it...

I mean if it's a blurb out there on their website promoting their product, then it must be true.

in fact, I had to reset one of the test phones, because it was locked at the store. Someone had put a pin into the phone and nobody knew the pin. This was the last phone they had so I used my own phone to look on the internet for the directions on how to wipe the Atrix so I could buy it.

@KitFox Yeah, police officers cooperate with you if you can show them the GPS location of your phone and such. And pictures of the thief.

2:52 PM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I meant that message post here by mistake.

@KitFox I mean it is intended for that, not just for when you've lost it yourself.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I bet that made you feel like King Hacker of the Universe. I think I would've felt pretty smug.

@NinjaTurtle There are no mistakes here. There is only standard usage and non-standard usage. Formal and informal, if you will.

I don't mean there's proof that someone succeeded, although I have read such proof about an Iphone application in a newspaper sometime, I think.

@KitFox haha. The woman at the store tired to get her "techs" to unlock it but they didn't know how. I googled "factory reset Atrix" and followed the directions, and she was like "wow! you REALLY wanted that phone!"

2:54 PM
@Cerberus Well, sure, they promote it that way, but that's just marketing. I doubt many thieves are that dumb.

@Cerberus I've also heard of cases where the victim brings GPS coords and photos of the perp and the police refuse to get involved. in the US, no less.

And we arrest everybody!

@johnlawler See this:
@J.R.: I'd still like to sick John Lawler on this one - I find he's excellent at explaining the underlying metaphoric associations that lead us to choose one "preposition" over another with these compound/phrasal verb combinations. — FumbleFingers 3 hours ago

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Nevermind.

@johnlawler On this question:
http://english.stackexchange.com/q/75153/10041

2:56 PM
@KitFox Perhaps not; that's why I was wondering about how thieves must know this. On the other hand, there are many casual thieves, people who just walk by and can't resist the phone lying on the café table...perhaps you would have a chance with those guys?

@Cerberus What's an opportunist going to do with a phone that doesn't belong to him?

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I guess that could happen too. The police are often "too busy" or whatever.
@KitFox Use it? Sell it on Ebay?

Without wiping it first? Without changing the number?
"Steve? No, this isn't Steve's number anymore."

No, change the SIM of course—but that is no problem for AL.
As to wiping, who knows?

So maybe. Possibly. I don't really see it as any great exciting thing, although I might send it to my husband since he is always losing his phone.
