4:00 PM
yeah
qb64 is just a lot easier than C

hm..

do you remember the days of DOS?
back then there was something called "qbasic"
this uses the same commands

no, I never really used DOS, started from Win 98

Before qbasic there was basic. I used the computers before you could buy them. You had to build you own.

Are you kidding me, Ask Ubuntu???

4:02 PM
wow sounds cool

The first floppies I used were 8 inches and held about 360K.

One day I bought 10 and thought I would never need more space.

hehehe .. you need 10 not 21K
:P
@ByteCommander

Pilot6 got shouty on there already!

4:04 PM
Seems like my session had expired, I had to log in again (and solve two goddamn Captchas!)

Oh.. captchas.. I remember this : did any one successfully solve the captcha for Ubuntu-One account from Software Center ?

took me a lont time to even get 10

Never needed that, I don't buy software.

To turn on recommendations , you need to login. and if you try to create an account from there.... its near to impossible to solve those Captchas..

That button seems to be dead. It has no effect here...

4:09 PM
@SeverusTux what's up ? :)

Hii :D

@Arronical careful

question mark

@Serg this one :
18 mins ago, by Severus Tux
My friend has this cool laptop which can be turned into a tablet by rotating the screen 360 degree. It works great on windows, but he is a linux lover :P . So we are writing a script to rotate display, show onscreen keyboard, disable keyboard etc.. But We have no idea how to detect rotation. !!! ie, trigger for script. I thought I could get some help here :) any ideas ?? thanks

> Replace "Fixierungsverhalten" with "Fixierungsverhalten".
any Germans who can explain the difference between the two words?

4:10 PM
ah, unity tweak comment

I dont know the command to rotate screen

@ByteCommander ^

I dont use tent mode on my 2 in one

@SeverusTux I could look into +

@jokerdino Sorry, not trying to incite anything, just noticed the all caps comment.

4:11 PM
@Serg are you subscribed to it?

it
sorry, dog pressed enter
5
@jokerdino yes on git

@Arronical OK should be on all caps. :O
@Serg whysir

@Serg lol
aNd A mOuSe Is JuMpInG oN mY sHiFt KeY

@jokerdino because why not ? also, i like to see what people are fixing, maybe i can learn from it

@Serg ?

4:12 PM
@JamesTobin
xrandr -o inverted

@ByteCommander look at the german word jokerdino posted
2 mins ago, by jokerdino
any Germans who can explain the difference between the two words?

@Serg I see. There is a reason I am subbed to it because I am supposed to maintain it. Was just a little puzzled why someone else do that.

Uhm, those are the same words...

4:13 PM
then make a qb64 app to shell that, save it as an executable, put it in a location, and make a .desktop file pointing to it. Then set an icon for the .desktop in file properties. Last: drag to panel

And I am not aware of any double meaning...

So I have no idea what that is supposed to mean out of context...
@jokerdino Aaaaha.

@JamesTobin The script is easy to make. What is not is triggering the script on rotation. Not by clicking on it

you want to have a .desktop so you can lock it to your launcher
*the launcher

4:16 PM
@SeverusTux rotation information should be in xrandr output, so you'd have to parse that. I am thinking to use another tool, but might take time, which i don't have today

@JamesTobin no, what i want is, When the screen is rotated >180 degree, (tablet mode) it should automatically lock the physical keyboard, invert the display, show virtual keyboard. and back to normal when made normal.
@Serg no problem. If you get any information, please ping me :) thanks

easy

could you tell me the name of the tool so that I will do some searches ?

make one
put all the commadns together

@SeverusTux it's Gdk library for python

4:19 PM
in one qb64 application

hm... I am still learning basic syntax of python.

nvm python
it cant do much

Python all the things!
It's amazing and powerful.

you have been bitten by the powerful python
you must be flown to the USA for instant medical care. I'll meet you there.
lol

Somebody forked my launcher-list-indicator and is adding viewport option to it , hmm, which is good. They're using wnck though :/

4:21 PM
@ByteCommander Python is for playing. C++ is for working

nah...
both are good

also if you want to play, I reccomend qb64

Quick Basic?

yes
it's a clone of qbasic

That was the lang I started coding with...
Good old QuickBASIC 4.5

4:22 PM
it's for brindows quack and linux
@ByteCommander visit qb64.net. Modern derivative

uff.... I thought my DDG dosen't know anything about qb64, "Quick basic" ? now it should show..

Actually I'm quite happy that those days are past...

@JamesTobin C++ is good, but it has issues. Nonetheless , Unity is in C++. But many apps are in Python. Also, it has toolkits for whatever - networking, big data, biomedical stuff - you name it

and maybe help me with my frustrating qb64 project. trying to make text based werewolf game but I'm having wierd errors
@serg hard to do much with python, too limited and buggy
python 3 is for crash testers

It is not.

4:24 PM
and python 2 is for the fiddler on the roof musicians
LOL

I love Python.

above all, Python interpreter.... OPEN Source :D :D :D

@JamesTobin Explain how it is limited and/or buggy ?

python 3 always crashes for me
python 2 maybe a bit more stable but still Ive had too many problems with it's applications

You can do everything in Python and you can do it easily. It might be not as fast as a C++ app, but it works.

4:25 PM
from .py files

hahaha.. nice

Then you messed it up.

@ByteCommander no I didnt

prove it.

@JamesTobin funny, but I've written several apps in python, and none of them crashed on me

4:26 PM
It never crashed for me without a reason.

https://github.com/SergKolo?tab=repositories

@serg than you are better than thousands of dignified developers eh?

seems so :)

last python app that crashed on me was Ubuntu Tweak py file running python 2

4:26 PM
My modesty prevents me saying so

@serg python may work for basic apps but for good advanced ones like c++ make it either gliches on or just cant do

@JamesTobin Where are these thousands of dignified developers saying Python crashes ?

not saying them

I mean.. any articles ?

making these programs that crash

4:27 PM
I get a feeling this discussion will lead to nothing but dispute...

same

lol

@JamesTobin basic apps ? hahahaha, oooh, sorry, this is just too funny

I dont mean basic language
I mean rather basic types of apps

@JamesTobin google was using webcrawlers in python in the past ( and probably still does ). IF it's good for Google, it's good for me

4:28 PM
@JamesTobin You know that Ubuntu is powered by mostly Python right?

go away with goggle.com

Python can be used for everything. From games over web stuff over hardware interaction over maths and science etc etc.

use bing!

XD
oh, god, this is live comedy

whaaat?? bing ?

4:29 PM
@Zacharee1 unity is yes

And it's far easier and quicker to write than C++

and that's why I hate unity

@JamesTobin you'd better be kidding

gotten so bad I'm about to go to chalet os
man I keep getting these crash report windows

@JamesTobin No, Unity is C. The base of Ubuntu is Python

4:29 PM
OK, gtg, bye guys

see you

what base dude? the unity dash is python

The day Microsoft produces something that doesn't suck is when they will start making vacuum cleaners.
7

bye @Serg

And Bing is not a vacuum cleaner.

4:30 PM
@ByteCommander LOLOL
bing's good though
goggle is frustrating

okay okay..

(I must disclose I stole this quote from the Python room... chat.stackoverflow.com/transcript/message/32288160#32288160)

lol

@JamesTobin I want to see if Unity 8 crashes for you

4:31 PM
you might be able to write lenses in python, but unity is definitely C.

user136984
You know, it feels a bit odd that it's suddenly no longer the summer, but instead it is officially autumn, though not many, if any, of the trees I have seen are actually losing their leaves;

<-- spent waaaaay too much time digging around the unity source

Because Unity 2.0-7.4 does include Python, but it's mostly C and C++

my dash always crashes

Unity is a graphical shell for the GNOME desktop environment developed by Canonical Ltd. for its Ubuntu operating system. Unity debuted in the netbook edition of Ubuntu 10.10. It was initially designed to make more efficient use of space given the limited screen size of netbooks, including, for example, a vertical application switcher called the launcher, and a space-saving horizontal multipurpose top menu bar. Unlike GNOME, KDE Software Compilation, Xfce, or LXDE, Unity is not a collection of applications but is designed to use existing programs. Unity is part of the Ayatana project, an initiative...

4:32 PM
@ParanoidPanda The seasons are all a bit late these days, at least in the UK

user136984
Oh dear, I've been doing too much Java! I've even started putting ; instead of . at the ends of sentences (as you can see above)! :D

@ParanoidPanda nice

every time my dash doesnt crash i sit in wonder and amazement
I'm always getting "sorry, Ubuntu has experienced an internal error" popups all the time

@ParanoidPanda when I was doing my Arduino projects, I'd always forget the semi-colon, and my whole program would break and I could never figure out why

I mean like every 10 minutes and I am ont exxagerating
*not

user136984
4:33 PM
Oh dear! :D

@ParanoidPanda Hi :) heard you are trying Arch. nice :)

funny thing is chalet os is based on ubuntu but I dont always see those things

sometimes I wonder James, if you only complain about stuff that works fine for others, why are you here?

@JamesTobin Have you ever opened one of those? I've never seen one from Unity

user136984
@Zacharee1: Did the compiler or IDE not tell you about the problem?

4:34 PM
@Seth I happen to be patiently using Unity, but I'm not entirely satisfied.

@ParanoidPanda Arduino likes to skip the missing semicolon and then complain about the error in syntax it causes 50 lines down

user136984
@SeverusTux: I haven't yet installed it as I've been rather busy, but I am looking into lots of its documentation and should get it installed soon. :)

user136984
@Zacharee1: Oh dear, well that's not very good of it.

@JamesTobin then switch. Don't just complain

good luck!

4:35 PM
@JamesTobin Chalet is based on Xubuntu isn't it? I suppose technically Ubuntu, but XFCE not Unity.

with gnome ?

@ParanoidPanda Well it sure got me to remember them after a while.

not a lot of people like unity. But I can safely say that here because this place supports ubuntu unity, xubuntu, ubuntu mate, and lubuntu
@Arronical youre right
it's a modified xubuntu

@JamesTobin I don't like Unity, but I think a lot of the people here prefer it

see I moderate the forums thats another reason I feel like switching. However unity has better touch integration... meh

4:37 PM
It might be wise to use the system that you're a forum mod for.

I wonder how much I can twerk up my chalet for better touch integration. Might be worth a try. Unfortunately cant try that in vm cuz touch never works right in vms unfortunately :(

user136984
@ByteCommander Oh dear... That is such a bad joke! :D

@Arronical I know :(

@Arronical that's just silly :p

@JamesTobin /me likes Unity.

4:38 PM
@ByteCommander unity would be more tolerable without that horrible dash

@Zacharee1 I do come up with some 'zany schemes'!

lol

I cant wait for MetroLux to make a 64 bit
I love the windows 8.1 start menu

@JamesTobin Launcher or Dash? Two different things, both can be replaced

@ByteCommander rolfmao

4:39 PM
@JamesTobin IMO Gnome has good touch integration, on Gnome, tapping inside a text box automatically brings virtual key board. On unity it doesn't . and there are many more. Unity is good for its own reasons.

dash
launcher's kinda nice

@JamesTobin Just because it's different does not mean it's bad. You need to get used to it to like it, as with every different thing.

but I dont like having a top bar like mac

@ByteCommander zune?
Zune was actually good.
I miss my zune :(

@ByteCommander the dash is simply bad

Q: Stuck installing Ubuntu

GewooI have a problem when I try to install Ubuntu 16.04.1 64 bit for a dual boot. I will tell you what I did and what is happening. Download Ubuntu iso and burned it to an usb. Booted from usb. Selected "Try Ubuntu without installing". I get the Ubuntu logo with the dots and then it gets stuck. T...

it's unstable and laid out poorly

What is zune?

Zune was a brand of digital media products and services marketed by Microsoft. Zune included a line of portable media players, digital media player software for Windows PCs, a music subscription service known as a "Zune Music Pass", music and video streaming services for the Xbox 360 game console via the Zune Software, music, TV and movie sales, and desktop sync software for Windows Phone. Zune also provided music streaming for United Airlines inflight after a partnership in 2010. The Zune hardware players were discontinued in October 2011. In June 2012, Microsoft announced plans to discontinue...

@JamesTobin so stop complaining about it and switch to something else, or replace what you don't like. It's Linux; it's possible

My Dash has always been stable.

4:40 PM
the launcher is good though

@ByteCommander StableDashâ„¢

@Zacharee1 I'm waiting on MetroLux to get their 64 bit past alpha
they dont even have x64 yet

so I ordered a phone from eBay, said it was good condition, it arrived, screen looked like it had been cleaned with sandpaper

thatt sux :(

@JamesTobin if they have a 64 bit alpha version, they have it for x64 :p

4:41 PM
they dont
I'm talking about a future thing
sorry for being unclear

@Zacharee1 contact the seller
then file a claim with ebay

@Seth already did

what phone btw?

see? I complain and do something about it

;p

4:43 PM
Note 4
remember that switch to TMO?
need new phones

if I'd act like you guys i'd say stop complaining and get another phone
haha

bought two
@JamesTobin I did...

ah.

just saying lol

why not note 5? too $$$ or don't like it?

4:44 PM
@Seth No SD slot, no removable battery, defective screen on a lot of them, PenGate on older models

sony xpheria is nice, although nexus is great if you want to put ubuntu/plasma mobile on

and I'm just keeping mine until the G Flex 3 or V20

o_O
no wonder people don't like the note 5...

November
@Seth yep

Uh oh... Everything gets soooo slow once the battery goes down to 5%...

4:45 PM
note 5 is not as high end and stable but hey it's not too bad either for general use

@Seth it's got a nice camera though... :p

Need to go for a cable...

welcome back kaz werewolf

is android "completely" opensource ?

lol

4:45 PM
no

Hi!

yo!

question mark

Auvoir!

@SeverusTux I think they do code releases after initial development is finished.

4:46 PM
auror!
chabet bonte lol

So I had a good idea. Tags for 1k+ only
/s

but they give us chance to root it.

@Seth oh, and I can only contact eBay about it if the seller doesn't respond by Sept 8

I have to go guys.. talk to you later

Android is "technically" open source.
Vanilla android is from the AOSP, iirc, but OEMs spin it off.
@JourneymanGeek I'M ALREADY ON IT, GOD.

user136984
4:48 PM
I have to find some new trousers which aren't made for 'cool' people who actually want them to fall down...

@Zacharee1 go to paypal if it starts taking too long.

are we doing an ebay?
if you're a buyer, you've automatically won the case lol

@KazWolfe yiss

i've had someone end up in such a way that they ended up getting a forced refund from me and they got to keep the product

@Seth I will. It's weird because the other phone is fine. A few scratches, but it looks like the previous owner was nice to it. The disaster one must have dropped onto asphalt or something, and it came with a Note 3 S-Pen as far as I can tell
@KazWolfe oooh, I could have 2 Note 4s from T-Mobile? Fun :p
I'd rather keep the VZ one though...

4:51 PM
@Zacharee1 hands down, t-mo is an awesome carrier

should'a bought from swappa.

except for their 26GB "unlimited" cap

not two of you -.-
;p

@Seth Swappa was more expensive, but I'm selling mine on there :p
@KazWolfe Well you aren't actually slowed to 2G then. You're just deprioritized. In a semi-rural area, you wouldn't notice :p
@Seth you know it's true

@Zacharee1 yeah, well, i do notice because tethering
iPhones on T-Mo are so OP when it comes to that, because the data doesn't count as tethered lol

4:53 PM
@KazWolfe do they reduce tether to 2G?

they kill tether altogether, iirc
i've never hit my tether cap so i can't tell you

@KazWolfe or, ya know, use the BL unlock they allow, and XPOSED IT UP
@KazWolfe well shut up about it then :p

user136984
Does anyone know anything about file locking and how to manage it in Java?

but no really. Nexus phones are amazing. The pinnacle imo
@ParanoidPanda I might. What are you tryin to do?

Step 1: Don't use Java.
Step 2: Profit.

4:54 PM
@Seth C peasant.
Java is amazingly elegant and powerful

@Seth I haz qweshun
can I post
> THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH UBUNTU AND CAPS ON THE INTERNET MEAN YOU ARE SHOUTING WHICH IS VERY UNHELPFUL WHEN YOURE ASKING FOR HELP FROM PEOLE WHO HAVE NO OBLIGATION TO DO SO.
pleeeaasee

yyou can
but it may be deleted

user136984
@KazWolfe: I don't need to do it just yet, but I will have soon have two programs, one managing a config file as a GUI for the user, the other reading from it and making necessary changes. So I think I'll probably need to lock the file to prevent corruption and other problems from occurring. But I don't really know how to lock or unlock a file nor how to check if a file is locked or not.

@KazWolfe you own one?

user136984
So I was wondering if anyone knew how to do it? Are there some special methods and classes for this sort of thing or something?

How to achieve this? ps: the enviroment that my java program will run will be a Windows 2000 server

user136984
@KazWolfe: Ah! Thanks! I will take a look at those now! :)

I think Seth muted me :p
or rightfully is ignoring me

no
oh man, L.D. James is still fighting.

no
@jokerdino lol
