Tim
9:00 PM
Will that get image malware stuff?

sudo apt-get install clamtk clamd

user136984
That how I always think about really good news, it could be really good, or really bad because the program says all is fine but really it's being controlled by an evil virus and things couldn't be worse... :P

@Tim yup

user136984
Well, only if they have a signature for it.

user136984
And it won't undo any damage already done, and the damage can be done real quick.

9:00 PM
@ParanoidPanda Nope: I've cleaned tons of viruses on other people's machine

as long oure on linux youre mostly safe because windows is still the bigger attack verctor for the most H4xx0rs

user136984
@Fabby: I think in some ways though your protection is better than mine though...

and one pr0n server that took over the corporate FTP server over a week-end
@ParanoidPanda No scripts, no cookies, adblock+
(and a custom hosts file that gets updated daily)

user136984
@Fabby: Same here, except I also have uMatrix and some other security add-ons installed.

uMatrix is superfluous: just empty the cache when you quit the browser.

user136984
9:02 PM
uMatrix is really good actually, it allows you very well to select exactly what elements you want to allow and which you want to block, you should have a look at it.

What other stuff have you got?

user136984
uBlock Origin.

user136984
HTTPS Everywhere.

user136984
BitDefender Trafficlight.

Anonymous
Do you use user.js for firefox?

9:03 PM
HTTPS one is good

user136984
And I think that's it... Obviously I also have NoScript and ABP installed, but you mentioned those already.

dunno last one

user136984
And I block third-party cookies.

ah

user136984
@Fabby: AdBlock Plus.

9:04 PM
I block ALL cookies, except the ones I allow

Anonymous
I have heard that NoScript can be difficult to use, since there are a lot of settings

user136984
Doesn't that get a bit much with some sites?

im using tor browser with ABP an noscript and flashblock and thats it

@ParanoidPanda I was talking about "BitDefender Trafficlight."

user136984
@onebree: It's actually really easy to use... You don't have to do much extra configuration.

9:05 PM
only for trusted sites i use FF

@Videonauth I uninstalled flash

Anonymous
I block all 3rd party cookies (and some others), Ghostery v5, uBlock Origin.

@ParanoidPanda Which interesting sites?

@Tim and how does the check on my procedure go?

user136984
Well, this site for instance, or Gmail really any other sites... Doesn't blocking all cookies by default and having the manually allow them get a bit much?

9:06 PM
Aanyway: get up at 06:05 tomorrow, so shutdown -h now.

user136984
But you can't get malware through cookies, can you?

Good night all!

user136984
@Fabby: Oh right, goodnight then! :)

@Fabby good night and good luck for the week

Anonymous
night fabby

user136984
9:06 PM
@onebree: I should probably get Ghostery again...

user136984
I just don't think I have an extreme need for it.

user136984
It only does cookie protection right?

Ha, I didn't even note it was your question @ParanoidPanda
hi chat, by the way o/

Anonymous
@ParanoidPanda on Chrome, it only does tracker protection. But for Firefox, it does that and cookies.

Anonymous
I suggest downloading the latest v5.X of Ghostery -- they changed a lot in v6, that I do not like

Anonymous
9:10 PM
hi serg!

@Serg Chat welcomes you :D

^_^
Gonna go solve a few dual-screen questions, if I can fish up a few good ones

Hello Everyone of stackexchange.

Hi, Henry o/

@HenryWhiteHatHacker o/

henry o/

The micro USB cable on this Pi is stuck pretty tight in the slot.

I know what o/ means. ;)

Anonymous
What's a good way to teach a 16-year-old about the Pi and programming? I think they have a pi 2.

Anonymous
I know of scratch and python, but I have not touched or used it in a long time

9:14 PM
Python is your best bet.

Anonymous
This is someone new to programming, in general.

I tried Scratch but I found that it had nearly an equal learning curve as Python.

Tim
@onebree code academy
Scratch is really good too

...and Python is actually useful :P

@ tim ah you missed the step with the build-dep

Tim
9:15 PM
Scratch teaches some really good things...

Anonymous
I mean... If I was asked to teach this person... Would Ijust walk through codecademy with them>

or you missed the part of changing the sources.list

user136984
@Serg: I got confused with your answer and thought it worked... Now it doesn't seem to, though the other answer appears to work, please check your answer again, maybe you missed something out...

ah no you did remove

user136984
Didn't check the Python script yet though...

9:17 PM
mhmmm how can i make this better

@ParanoidPanda ah, i see. You need -type f there, to only indicate files. Directories also have exec permissions.
without executable permissions on a directory, they are unreadable

user136984
@Serg: Funny timing! I just realised that to and was just about to tell you when you pinged me! :D

user136984
Right, well, when you've edited your answer please let me know and I will re-accept it. :)

@ParanoidPanda
DIR:/testdir|15:19|skolodya@ubuntu:
$ ls -l
total 0
-rw-rwxrwx 1 xieerqi xieerqi 0 May  1 14:43 file*
-rwxrwxr-x 1 xieerqi xieerqi 0 May  1 15:19 file2*

DIR:/testdir|15:19|skolodya@ubuntu:
$ find . -type f -executable -printf "FILE:%p OWNER: "   -exec stat -c "%U" {} \;
FILE:./file2 OWNER: xieerqi
There, the command only finds file that is executable
Python script on the other hand, works only with files

user136984
@Serg: I'm now thinking that it would be useful if I had a script which would automatically now go through my home area and make executable files owned by me not executable any more, would you be willing to add that to your answer? And if so, do you think I should just edit and extend the question or ask a new one? :)

user136984
9:24 PM
@Serg: Right, well those were too slightly strangely put together questions, a) would you be willing to add it to your answer if I just extended my question, and b) do you think I should just extend my question or ask a new one? :)

@ParanoidPanda I don't think that's a good idea, simply because it lists all the files. That may include something important, like config files or git files, or even something simple as .bashrc Just get the list first and verify if nothing is going to brick your system

user136984
Good point, I should probably do this manually.

user136984
Though there are certain areas where it would be safe to do in my system...

user136984
Such as my Documents folder, that shouldn't really have anything executable in it, but it currently does...

user136984
Never mind, I sorted it all out! :)

user136984
Because that's the piece of software I'm talking about...

In my question that is...

this is not on my vm
i deleted the vm again after i tested my procedure for downgrading gedit

user136984

Ooops, doesn't make a difference anyway.

user136984
But you posted an answer to say it wasn't installed by default any more on Xenial, but you have it installed...

Whoa...
Writing to this microSD card is making it too hot to touch.
Is that normal?

@HenryWhiteHatHacker looking . . .

@Serg The loop is evil

@NathanOsman yep is normal, aver tried to touch an ssd after intensive use ? you could cook a dinner on it

9:52 PM
@Videonauth I'll take your word for it.

@HenryWhiteHatHacker with proper python indentation it works alright . . .well, could make it a bit better, hold on

No the infinite loop

@ParanoidPanda i must have misunderstood your question tho i deleted my answer i thougth you where referring on the two software centers

16.04 image has been written to the microSD card. Time to boot 'er up.

good luck

9:56 PM
Nothing is... happening...
Hrm.

user136984
@onebree @Fabby: Right, just installed and set up Ghostery! :)

@NathanOsman What are you trying to boot?

user136984
Anyway, goodnight folks! ;)

night, ppanda

@chaskes Ubuntu 16.04 on my Raspberry Pi 2.
It finally came up.

Oh, I just bought a pi 2. Do you just burn it to the sd and boot or are there special instructions? Special arm build/

@chaskes yeah, you basically dd the iso image to it

@chaskes You can either use dd or the disk image writer app.
Then you'll want to expand the second partition to fill the remaining free space.
It's a 4 GB image that they distribute.
(About 250 MB to download.)

@Serg where is password_list defined?

thx. which iso do you use?

10:04 PM
ubuntu-16.04-preinstalled-server-armhf+raspi2.img.xz
^--- that's the one you want

@Zacharee1 it's just an "array" inside the program itself, it doesn't check against actual password list

thx, I was on the general releases page and getting confused

Thank you @serg! ;)

thx

10:06 PM
@Serg I don't get it

@chaskes It's the server image but you can always add desktop packages.

cool. I just got the pi touchscreen too

@Zacharee1 because you're using Windows , that's why you don't get it. Stop playing with Windows, and let Linux open your doors :p

sigh
Python is cross-platform silly
:p

I know . . . but i still need to tease you somehow :p

10:08 PM
@chaskes You'll have lots of fun with that.
I highly recommend getting the camera module too.

Hey, I do have Ubuntu, but it's no fun when it can't produce nice-sounding audio and when it kills my battery in 30 minutes

It can record at 90 fps.

@NathanOsman thx. will take a look at it. I'm lucky to have a microcenter nearby (although sometimes cheaper online)

@Zacharee1 ---^
Yup, that's right. 22 hours remain with 19% battery charge :P

@NathanOsman how big is your battery/how inaccurate is that estimate?

10:10 PM
Lol.
A tad inaccurate I suppose.

Are you sure?
Because you could have a 1000000Wh battery

Yes, there is no laptop in existence that can run that long.
Not even a Mac :D

user139252
@SQuirel Did you need me to install something?

hi

user139252
I checked and you can't just do apt-get install javac

10:11 PM
@TheBrownOne Plz could u install javac & csh

How to install lsb for Epso XP-950 printer drivers

@JacobVlijm was there a question for checking number of connected displays at some point ?
I am certain there was, but cannot find it on my list of saved questions

@TheBrownOne doesn't the openjdk-8-jdk-headless package provide javac?

user139252
I thought so

10:13 PM
openjdk-8-jdk is the latest available java for 14.04, and probably 16.04

user139252
Let me try reinstalling that.

ok

never mind
it wokrs

@TheBrownOne here's every package that provides javac: packages.ubuntu.com/…

user139252
Thanks, I got it in the openjdk-8

10:15 PM
yup me
too

@tempforFindMeInTheWoods Thanks :)

so about that printer driver...
@SQ
@SQuirel dont mention
I just installed printer-driver-escpr and im checking now, my question is will there be full functionality?

user139252
@SQuirel Do you want me to change your default shell to csh?

@TheBrownOne No thank you

user139252
Alright.

10:18 PM
@TheBrownOne The server's incredibly fast!

@NathanOsman looking back in the chat here... You can jerryrig a laptop battery to do that 22 hrs on 19% but you would have like 5 day charge time and a huge bump under your computer

How fast is it?

am i alive
is time a thing
is life a thing?

yes yes & yes

or a figment of imagination
@SQuirel sssssh.... i am a ghost

10:20 PM
@tempforFindMeInTheWoods And... a fire?
Do you know what happens when you overcharge lithium-based cells?

@NathanOsman yes explosions

Indeed.

cant you use Ni batteries?
anyway just get a regulator

@Serg not sure what you mean, just the number of screens? That would be simple.

Then you're not charging them beyond their limit anymore :P

10:21 PM
would you like to do that?

No, I think not.

blow up your house so your laptop has +2 mins
sounds like a good idea
lets do it :P

Okay, your house then.
:D

so back to the printer issue can someone halp?

10:24 PM
I'm having printer issues of my own.
The duplexer doesn't work anymore...

user139252
@SQuirel It's just a Pi2 :P

Ok

user139252
@onebree I went ahead and got that humble bundle, as well.

Soon the pi's are going to be more powerful than my computer...

user139252
When I saw there was a Python book, I couldn't resist :P

user139252
10:26 PM
gotta go take care of laundry!

ok

@SQuirel Not mine :D Let's see a Pi with the equivalent graphics muscle as my Radeon R9 270X.
My graphics card has more RAM than the Pi has system memory.

I feel your pain.
We have a netbook with similar specs.

really wanted to get one of those at some point for my mom, but settled on Toshiba

10:29 PM
Terrific battery life but horrible performance.

10.1 atoms are cool, but if it's all you have, it can get frustrating

It's where lxde really shines ;)

One nice thing - I managed to get the Windows license upgraded to Win8 Pro.
So it then becomes possible to change the desktop background and use multiple monitors.

btw, all atoms can go to 2GB despite what they say. If you can get to the slot you might want to upgrade the memory

If I can still find RAM for it...
Honestly, replacing it would probably be cheaper than the RAM :D
(Not really, but still...)
Why is SFTP so slow to my Pi...

10:35 PM
Found a couple of questions to answer, though not quite happy with them :/

Is is just me or do you guys accidentally type "ls" instead of "dir" on windows machines?

happened to me couple of times

I miss [tab] on Windows :(

yeah, same here. I usually carry around a usb with cygwin installed there, but the PATH variable is different in every one of the machines, so . . . it only works on a limited amount of machines

What good is cygwin?

10:40 PM
Any mods here? There's a troll answer on askubuntu.com/questions/764207/windows-10-and-ubuntu-dual-boot

does it do anything besides ssh?

It has awk, and grep, and bash . . . and vim . . . .and nano
basically all the tools that i miss on windows

you use vim?

yeah

I use nano...

10:42 PM
@NickWeinberg @NathanOsman have a look here

vim is really powerful when you need to quickly navigate between lines and words, and insert or delete multiple items. For instance, I can comment out multiple lines in a shell script with just one command

#GoTeamNano

We have a lot of vi/vim users here. I'm not aware of anyone using emacs.
So I guess the battle comes down to vim vs. nano.
After that we can fight over tabs vs. spaces :)

#GoTeamNano

10:44 PM
I tried emacs once, but it didn't stick to me

@NathanOsman Both...in the same program

@Serg Yeah, I prefer Linux.

#GoTeamVIM

What desktop environment do you use?

10:45 PM
Unity.

@NathanOsman tabs are 8 spaces by default, so it's the same thing, except condensed into one key , so . . .

@Videonauth o_O

Noooooooooooooooooooooo.... it's not the same thing at all!

Unity right now, but every now and then i use others for a week or two

8 spaces == 8 bytes.
1 tab = 1 byte

10:46 PM
@Serg Tabs are four spaces though?

@Zacharee1 Tabs aren't spaces.

At least on my computer

@Zacharee1 ?

@NathanOsman the equivalent, ok? :p

I guess that depends on an app

10:46 PM
Take up the same space as
@Videonauth Wow

@Zacharee1 They don't have an equivalent.
Tabs are "rendered" as spaces.

erf;iouhebpirgbrgv

You can use however many you like.

Somebody star my #GoTeamVIM we need to start another argument in the chat
3

Stop being so technical

10:47 PM
Zacharee1 what youre referring to ?

@Serg Notepad!

#GoTeamNano

Fight! Fight! Fight! :D

@Zacharee1 O_O Notepad ? Blasphemy !

@Videonauth the link you posted here
@Videonauth direct replies
@Serg xD
Well, I like Brackets
It's a web IDE, but it highlights functions and such
and does auto-bracketing

10:48 PM
Nobody has love for edit ? it used to be an editor back in the day before windows 7

Atom! Sublime! Visual Studio Code! cat! Gotta use 'em all!

@Serg what?
OK I really need to work

#GoTeamNano

@NathanOsman not an invitation for a suspension btw :p

10:49 PM
ew

This is what happens when I drink too much iced tea...

@Zacharee1 rather have along read askubuntu.com/questions/766055/…

much better

This is actually interesting: askubuntu.com/questions/766119/…

I've used that on a msdos virtual machine :)

10:50 PM
@Serg That's DOS?!

It ain't OS X...

@NathanOsman sigh

@Zacharee1 unplug the sata cable to the HD

@NathanOsman but it could be Windows :p
@SQuirel I think they just don't want the Install option in GRUB or the program in the Live environment

@Zacharee1 Way back when dinosaurs roamed the earth and there was no GUI , they had something called Disk Operating Systems . . .

10:52 PM
WordPerfect. There. Now I'm old.

@Serg Did they have electricity back then ? :)

@Serg I've used DOS
and that looks like a GUI to me

How about the DOS version of WordPerfect

@SQuirel Nope. Before electricity, computers used water cascading down a waterwheel to effect mechanical movements within the computing device.
2

@NathanOsman Still exists

10:54 PM
:D
@Zacharee1 That is sad.

@Zacharee1 <.< GUI ? Windows 3.0 that's GUI, MS DOS is still command line. We had to use ms dos and norton commander in middle school

@Serg fine

How about dos on my first job?

@chaskes what about it ?
@NathanOsman WordPErfect looks quite similar to sfte

I mean while you were in middle school I was using dos after college...

10:57 PM
We had Macs with System 7 at school when I grew up.

Oh . . . Well , we didn't have that advanced of a PC in middle school in Ukraine. Then I came to the US and worked on XP workstations . . . .and Windows 7 in college.. . . . then for some reason i installed ubuntu on my laptop, and so began the legend
What I really would love to play with is Unix System V

Here's what it looked like:
Yes, that's a Mac.

@NathanOsman I WANNA !!!! @_@

@Serg FreeBSD, OpenBSD
