@TheBrownOne Thanks for fixing nano :)

@TheBrownOne have you read Brighton Beach Memoirs?

I actually loled at this title
"The dead horse liveth: resume after suspend/hibernate with an Nvidia card"

@JacobVlijm @Seth @Oli I've been thinking here : there's couple of questions that ask for changing launcher position, but some of them ask left, some of them ask right. Can't we just make one generic question and answer ?

pretty sure one exists.
220
Q: Can I move the Unity launcher?

BenjaminI can’t get used to the new Unity system. I’d like to move the left Unity panel to the bottom of screen (like Windows 7 – more similar is better). But I can't find a way. Is it possible?

Q: How does one move the Unity Launcher to the bottom in Ubuntu 16.04

BraskHow do you move the Unity Launcher to the bottom of the screen in Ubuntu 16.04.

12:19 AM
Hey, I need to remote desktop to my dad's windows computer, is remmina still the way to go?

Did bash make its way into the regular store yet?

@SEth the top one still asks about moving panel to the bottom, and the second one is specific to moving launcher to the bottom in 16.04. I'm talking about just generic "How do I move launcher? " regardless of where
@AaronHall Not a remina user, but ssh is always good :D

@Serg That's the top one. "how do I move the launcher?". Of course the question is going to want a specific spot! But it is general.

can I set up an ssh server on windows? probably 7 and not pro

OK, but users will be complaining when they see the body of that question "Hey, my question is not a dupe of that ! "

12:22 AM
@AaronHall yes

if you're got a recommended way of doing that, let me know. :)

@AaronHall I used this when my MC server was running off my dad's laptop bitvise.com/ssh-server
Works nicely

didn't want to type that but Zach made it funny so ill keep it

12:24 AM
ok, cool.

I'm a little hyper today. Not sure if anyone noticed ;p

@AaronHall ssh on windows ? Sure ! with cygwin

@Serg server?

Install cygwin, choose ssd as one of the packages and configure it

oh yeah? hmm...

12:24 AM
I've that on my mom's laptop and dad's

@AaronHall Bitvise is simple and it works well

Also if you remote from like another network, you will need port forwarding on the router

I have about an hour to figure out what I want to do. He has some kinda spyware or malware - don't know what's he's done to get it off, but I'm going to try to help.

Who's "he"?

oh, my dad.

12:28 AM
@AaronHall Try to convince him to switch to Mac or Linux . Windows spyware is just so annoying. Older generation has no clue about spyware , they just want it gotten off the computer , and to us techies - it's a pain in ze butt doing it over and over

ah
@Serg But if you do it for a business...

I've done the full-press "Let's install Ubuntu" talk, but he didn't go for it when I was available to do it years ago, and this is the first time he's asked for help.

@Zacharee1 <.< so you're going to charge your dad/mom for removing spyware ?

@Serg of course! :D
But my mom has a Mac and my dad knows enough about technology to avoid viruses

See , that's completely different thing. If it's a business , fine. But if your family member gets a malware and you ask for money to remove it,carma will bite you in the butt when you need their help.

12:33 AM
Have him pay bestbuy $100 not worth the time fixing up infected wincomputers

@Serg I wouldn't do that
@Mateo or take it to an independent repair shop, where they will actually charge a fair price

Or just switch to Mac or Linux

LOA ?

link only answer

12:44 AM
@Seth I've written a sort of generic answer for launcher placement in dual-monitor setup here : askubuntu.com/q/42353/295286 But the question asks for placing launcher on the left. Can I edit the question to make it more generic ? like "How do I configure launcher placement with multiple monitors ?"

#GoTeamNano

@SQuirel VIM will prevail
#VIM_FOR_THE_WIN

#GoTeamGedit :D

@Zacharee1 You can't do that

srsly tho
that's what I use :p
@SQuirel watch me

12:46 AM
What if you don't have graphics?

@Zacharee1

O_O <-- like this
@Serg

i have issues with typing today

º_ø
ooh I like that one

Let's say you accidentally did something like sudo apt-get purge nvidia*

12:47 AM
غ or the planet with the moon

gedit wouldnt work

@SQuirel then I use nano, because that's the one I learned how to use
vim always confuses me

They you're team nano!

It took me long enough to figure out nano

i don't like gedit . . . it's like notepad

12:48 AM
@Serg soooo much nicer
It supports proper line wrapping
and has a font not designed by Lucifer himself

When I'm showing people how easy linux is I show them nano

O_o

besides I usually have two things terminal and firefox. Why would i want a third window open for editing text files, when i can do that in vim in terminal ?

but when I'm showing them what a 1337 haxor I am I use nano :)

@Serg I just like being able to click where I want sometimes
@SQuirel leet haxorz use Kali

12:49 AM
But you an navigate lines and words using keyboard more efficiently than clicking
in vim that is

@Serg Well can you even click in vim?
Scrolling is also something I like about graphics

Scrolling through lines of text is tricky with the arrow keys
and slow

HJKL !!!

NOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Up Down Left Right

12:50 AM
Navigation in vim is so much nicer once you learn it

@SQuirel I use that, but what if the line is 200 chars long?
@Serg But I can just click in my GUI :D
click click click

Can you comment out 20 lines of code with one command ?
I can do that in VIM

No newbie gui is off limits in the txt-editor battle

hago clic dónde necesito el cursor
@Serg I don't know
But I could open it in Arduino and use ctrl / :p

@Zacharee1 oh, please, should I bring up Chinese ? :p
Open what in arduino ?

12:51 AM
@Serg qué?
The text file :p

@Serg just change the title, that should do it.

@Seth Are you team nano or team vim?

I don't need to comment lines all that much

@Serg How do you comment out 20 lines of code? There's a lot about vim I still don't know.

@SQuirel team vim.

12:52 AM
@Seth :(

@chaskes :1,20s/^/#/

I'll probably get to vim eventually, but for now I don't have the need

thx

Command from line 1 to line 2, substitute beginning of line with #

@Zacharee1 Don't turn to the dark-side

12:53 AM
@Zacharee1 pfff , opening file in Arduino has nothing to do with text editors. Arduino is completely different topic

ssh

The need for VIM becomes apparent when you work accross different systems.
snappy only has vim
other systems may or may not have nano

How do I format for ascii art?

vim , however , is everywhere
Ctrl + K
@SQuirel ^

It didn't work :(

12:55 AM
Select it and then press it @SQuirel

It's not working

Paste the text, select the text and press Ctrl K?

My project for Interface Techniques class is basically Raspberry with Snappy writes to serial connection with PIC18 microcontroller. The writing is done via python script. And what did i use to write the script ? VIM of course !

  ____  ___      _____ _____    _    __  __       _   _    _    _   _  ___

VIM may have a steep learning curve, but once you get the hang of it, it's easy

In other words, it's hard until it isn't

And for no reason at all: Drink all the booze, vim all the text

1:00 AM

All I can say is...

Why would one want to quit vim>

?

@NathanOsman are you team nano or team vim?

@TheXed you don't know how do you? :p

he's team sublime

1:01 AM
nano for me.
@Serg That too.
But I thought we were limited to console editors.

Zachare brought up gedit and notepad, so no

So did I....
@Serg yeah, but you said they were invalid because they were GUI

Yeah, because command line is always there , GUI - not always

Sidenote: Docker has really messed up the network interfaces on this machine.

1:03 AM
Lol

Man. Security isn't easy
CSRF is a PAIN

@SQuirel go ahead and ssh to snappy ubuntu - you won't find nano there, and no way to install it , lol
vim has been around since the beginning of Unix

@NathanOsman Phew, the michael jackson graphic finally scrolled off my screen. long national nightmare over, etc.

Vim is amazing :D

I will leave y'all with this:

1:16 AM
vim is like a car with manual transmission, nano is like first generation of automatic

One reason nano is called nano is it's really frickin small.

Small & Awesome

install it and vim on a container and see how long each takes.

@Mateo Is that your phone?

Depends on a container ,id say

1:18 AM
I was at a workshop where they were using vim to demo containers, and I used nano instead because that way I could easily catch up

Once you know vim you can be ahead of any nano user

@Mateo you're British?
Sorry, swipe fail

@Zacharee1 no, it just produced funnier results there ;p
@NathanOsman Ubuntu tablet ;)

weird

@Mateo Cool!
How do you like it?

1:26 AM
did you see the desktop mode picture earlier?

Nope.

no, we we're installing them, not using them.

@NathanOsman Too much to send it to me....

vim installs in minutes, nano in seconds

They're pretty cheap.

1:27 AM
it is real nice, lots of potential, lots still to do, but an awesome thing

coreos versus ubuntu, shoot

@AaronHall I worked for a company that used CoreOS back in the BTRFS days.

@Seth edit done, askubuntu.com/q/42353/295286 , can we VTC askubuntu.com/q/68663/295286 as dupe of the one i edited ?

Back in the btrfs days?

1:30 AM
@Serg I thought the issue was moving the position, not the screen

@AaronHall The images (at least the AMI ones) used BTRFS.
It was... less than reliable.

@Zacharee1 The issue is placing launcher on a specific screen

I remember constantly running out of disk space.

ah

My answer on the one i edited, answers both

1:36 AM
Unity 8 is really getting good

Can't wait to try out Unity 8.
Just like I can't wait for a proper port of the AMD GPU Pro drivers... :D

@SQuirel tables imported

1:53 AM
@TheBrownOne Thanks

2:13 AM
How can my dad tell me what his domain is? He's got Windows 10

@AaronHall you need him to have port forwarding in the first place, in order to remote to his workstation
port forwarding on the router

ugh, port forwarding on the router...
remote settings?

@Mateo nice

@Seth I hear there will be an installer for x apps coming, or at least in development

sweet

2:25 AM
besides the do it yourself route...

at least good thing is that it's patched

Twas fun, but my sister will never play monopoly with me again

@Mateo Lol. That bad?
We've had some pretty heated Catan games here.
The really contested games end with heated accusations and a little bit of yelling... :D
All in good fun, of course ;)

That is a fun game, need to find people to play it here

Catan?

2:37 AM
Batery lasted a while

@NathanOsman never heard of it

@Mateo I think it needs plugging in...

@Mateo wow!
I've never wanted a tablet so bad :P

been doind that last part all out full brightness wifi, gps, bluetooth

2:40 AM
so it will do a good solid day looks like

I always keep my laptop plugged in

@SQuirel that was the case with my old laptop, but since i switched to newer toshiba c55, it's gotten better - like 4 hours without a charge

ok

I think I'm going to skip setting up the full server over the internet, looks like chrome has an RDP server...

@NathanOsman one of my aunts is known for flipping the table during a catan game xD
They're generally okay, but sometimes my relatives can get really heated during a game lol.

2:49 AM
LOL.
We have not flipped anything around here.

I played a really interesting game called Fluxx a few weeks ago. Really cool.

i like how my script keeps going

@Seth I've played that one too.
That's the one with the changing rules, right?

3:07 AM
@NathanOsman yeah. It was really cool.

@Videonauth I found the Ubuntu instructions for using debootstrap: help.ubuntu.com/16.04/installation-guide/amd64/apds04.html

user139252

good morning

Hi

hi guys
I want to make a mouse work in ubuntu 12.04
It works on ubuntu 15.04
I: Bus=0003 Vendor=4623 Product=011a Version=0111
N: Name="Hite Board-XXXXXXXX"
P: Phys=usb-0000:00:14.0-1/input0

B: PROP=2
B: EV=b
B: KEY=400 0 0 0 0 0
B: ABS=260800000000003
the output of /proc/bus/input which contains the device information

7:22 AM
More information on issue: paste.ubuntu.com/16186177

The good news is that a fix for this annoying issue is, mercifully, on the way. A patched version of the gnome-software app should arrive through the usual Ubuntu update channels in the next few days.

It fixes side loading of local .debs and several other known issues:

    Support apt://urls
    Increase number of reviews shown from 10 to 30
    Show version and size information for non-installed apps
    Enable the Snappy backend

any suggestions folks?

@AbhishekBhatia did you post an actual question ?
I personally don't know much about mice , so won't be of much help

7:38 AM
@AbhishekBhatia me sying silent means aswell im not able to help you due to lack of experience on that matter
good morning Serg

@Serg hey, not yet. Just debugging it a bit before posting.
I don't know hotplug is related to configuration of some package.

8:05 AM
Hi, guys! Im having some problems here. I cant boot my computer at all.
Right now, the only way of running Ubuntu on my computer is through a bootable USB stick.

here's what I did following instructions from earlier I install hotplug using tldp.org/HOWTO/Handspring-Visor/hotplug.html But there is mouse.conf in etc/hotplug
is there any silly mistake I am making?

When I boot my computer, it stops on a black screen with the words "grub rescue" on it,
Any directions on how to solve it?

Alright, bedtime. Night all.

8:24 AM
@NathanOsman sleep well

i mean then hopefully you spend the past 12 week with iintensive preperation already

We have trimesters
Is that 12?
uh

12:33 PM
yeah its not a typo

Well the term is 12 weeks, but I'm only 8 weeks in

but maybe im simply seeing learning and exams in a different light at my age

I think this is for you @Videonauth: askubuntu.com/questions/766332/…

mhmm lets see

@Videonauth It's also a somewhat different country :p

Na i dont think it is country related, its rather being meanwhile more street wise

The US's education system is very messed up
Everything focuses on how you do with a test

wel but that should not stop you from learning as much as possible and preparing as much as possible
